1. അര്ത്ഥഹ് ശഷ്ടാരാജാവിന്റെ ഇരുപതാം ആണ്ടില് നീസാന് മാസത്തില് ഞാന് ഒരിക്കല് രാജാവിന്റെ മുമ്പാകെ ഇരുന്ന വീഞ്ഞു എടുത്തു അവന്നു കൊടുത്തു; ഞാന് ഇതിന്നു മുമ്പെ ഒരിക്കലും അവന്റെ സന്നിധിയില് കുണ്ഠിതനായിരുന്നിട്ടില്ല.

1. In the month Nisan of the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when the wine was in my charge, I took some and offered it to the king. As I had never before been sad in his presence,

2. രാജാവു എന്നോടുനിന്റെ മുഖം വാടിയിരിക്കുന്നതു എന്തു? നിനക്കു ദീനം ഒന്നും ഇല്ലല്ലോ; ഇതു മനോ ദുഃഖമല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നുമല്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

2. the king asked me, 'Why do you look sad? If you are not sick, you must be sad at heart.' Though I was seized with great fear,

3. അപ്പോള് ഞാന് ഏറ്റവും ഭയപ്പെട്ടു രാജാവിനോടുരാജാവു ദീര്ഘായുസ്സായിരിക്കട്ടെ; എന്റെ പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ കല്ലറകള് ഉള്ള പട്ടണം ശൂന്യമായും അതിന്റെ വാതിലുകള് തീകൊണ്ടു വെന്തും കിടക്കെ എന്റെ മുഖം വാടാതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നതു എങ്ങനെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. I answered the king: 'May the king live forever! How could I not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been eaten out by fire?'

4. രാജാവു എന്നോടുനിന്റെ അപേക്ഷ എന്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു; ഉടനെ ഞാന് സ്വര്ഗ്ഗത്തിലെ ദൈവത്തോടു പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചിട്ടു,

4. The king asked me, 'What is it, then, that you wish?' I prayed to the God of heaven

5. രാജാവിനോടുരാജാവിന്നു തിരുവുള്ളമുണ്ടായി അടിയന്നു തിരുമുമ്പില് ദയ ലഭിച്ചു എങ്കില് അടിയനെ യെഹൂദയില് എന്റെ പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ കല്ലറകളുള്ള പട്ടണത്തിലേക്കു അതു പണിയേണ്ടതിന്നു ഒന്നു അയക്കേണമേ എന്നുണര്ത്തിച്ചു.

5. and then answered the king: 'If it please the king, and if your servant is deserving of your favor, send me to Judah, to the city of my ancestors' graves, to rebuild it.'

6. അതിന്നു രാജാവു--രാജ്ഞിയും അരികെ ഇരുന്നിരുന്നു--നിന്റെ യാത്രെക്കു എത്രനാള് വേണം? നീ എപ്പോള് മടങ്ങിവരും എന്നു എന്നോടു ചോദിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ എന്നെ അയപ്പാന് രാജാവിന്നു സമ്മതമായി; ഞാന് ഒരു അവധിയും പറഞ്ഞു.

6. Then the king, and the queen seated beside him, asked me how long my journey would take and when I would return. I set a date that was acceptable to him, and the king agreed that I might go.

7. രാജാവിന്നു തിരുവുള്ളമുണ്ടായി ഞാന് യെഹൂദയില് എത്തുംവരെ നദിക്കു അക്കരെയുള്ള ദേശാധിപതിമാര് എന്നെ കടത്തിവിടേണ്ടതിന്നു

7. I asked the king further: 'If it please the king, let letters be given to me for the governors of West-of-Euphrates, that they may afford me safe-conduct till I arrive in Judah;

8. അവര്ക്കും എഴുത്തുകളും ആലയത്തോടു ചേര്ന്ന കോട്ടവാതിലുകള്ക്കും പട്ടണത്തിന്റെ മതിലിന്നും ഞാന് ചെന്നു പാര്പ്പാനിരിക്കുന്ന വീട്ടിന്നും വേണ്ടി ഉത്തരം മുതലായവ ഉണ്ടാക്കുവാന് രാജാവിന്റെ വനവിചാരകനായ ആസാഫ് എനിക്കു മരം തരേണ്ടതിന്നു അവന്നു ഒരു എഴുത്തും നല്കേണമേ എന്നും ഞാന് രാജാവിനോടു അപേക്ഷിച്ചു. എന്റെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ദയയുള്ള കൈ എനിക്കു അനുകൂലമായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു രാജാവു അതു എനിക്കു തന്നു.

8. also a letter for Asaph, the keeper of the royal park, that he may give me wood for timbering the gates of the temple-citadel and for the city wall and the house that I shall occupy.' The king granted my requests, for the favoring hand of my God was upon me.

9. അങ്ങനെ ഞാന് നദിക്കു അക്കരെയുള്ള ദേശാധിപതിമാരുടെ അടുക്കല് വന്നു രാജാവിന്റെ എഴുത്തു അവര്ക്കും കൊടുത്തു. രാജാവു പടനായകന്മാരെയും കുതിരച്ചേവകരെയും എന്നോടുകൂടെ അയച്ചിരുന്നു.

9. Thus I proceeded to the governors of West-of-Euphrates and presented the king's letters to them. The king also sent with me army officers and cavalry.

10. ഹോരോന്യനായ സന് ബല്ലത്തും അമ്മോന്യനായ ദാസന് തോബീയാവും ഇതു കേട്ടപ്പോള് യിസ്രായേല്മക്കള്ക്കു ഗുണം ചെയ്വാന് ഒരു ആള് വന്നതു അവര്ക്കും ഏറ്റവും അനിഷ്ടമായി.

10. When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite slave had heard of this, they were very much displeased that someone had come to seek the welfare of the Israelites.

11. ഞാന് യെരൂശലേമില് എത്തി അവിടെ മൂന്നു ദിവസം താമസിച്ചശേഷം

11. When I had arrived in Jerusalem, I first rested there for three days.

12. ഞാനും എന്നോടുകൂടെ ചില പുരുഷന്മാരും രാത്രിയില് എഴുന്നേറ്റു; എന്നാല് യെരൂശലേമില് ചെയ്വാന് എന്റെ ദൈവം എന്റെ മനസ്സില് തോന്നിച്ചിരുന്നതു ഞാന് ആരോടും പറഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ലായിരുന്നു; ഞാന് കയറിയിരുന്ന മൃഗം അല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊരു മൃഗവും എന്നോടുകൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല.

12. Then I set out by night with only a few other men (for I had not told anyone what my God had inspired me to do for Jerusalem) and with no other animals but my own mount.

13. ഞാന് രാത്രിയില് താഴ്വരവാതില് വഴിയായി പെരുമ്പാമ്പുറവിങ്കലും കുപ്പവാതില്ക്കലും ചെന്നു യെരൂശലേമിന്റെ മതില് ഇടിഞ്ഞുകിടക്കുന്നതും വാതിലുകള് തീവെച്ചു ചുട്ടിരിക്കുന്നതും കണ്ടു.

13. I rode out at night by the Valley Gate, passed by the Dragon Spring, and came to the Dung Gate, observing how the walls of Jerusalem lay in ruins and its gates had been eaten out by fire.

14. പിന്നെ ഞാന് ഉറവു വാതില്ക്കലേക്കും രാജാവിന്റെ കുളത്തിങ്കലേക്കും ചെന്നു; എന്നാല് ഞാന് കയറിയിരുന്ന മൃഗത്തിന്നു കടന്നുപോകുവാന് സ്ഥലം പോരാതിരുന്നു.

14. Then I passed over to the Spring Gate and to the King's Pool. Since there was no room here for my mount to pass with me astride,

15. രാത്രിയില് തന്നേ ഞാന് തോട്ടിന്റെ അരികത്തുകൂടി ചെന്നു മതില് നോക്കി കണ്ടു താഴ്വരവാതിലിന് വഴിയായി മടങ്ങിപ്പോന്നു.

15. I continued on foot up the wadi by night, inspecting the wall all the while till I once more reached the Valley Gate, by which I went back in.

16. ഞാന് എവിടെപ്പോയി എന്നും എന്തു ചെയ്തു എന്നും പ്രമാണികളാരും അറിഞ്ഞില്ല; അന്നുവരെ ഞാന് യെഹൂദന്മാരോടോ പുരോഹിതന്മാരോടോ പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരോടോ പ്രമാണികളോടോ വേലയെടുക്കുന്ന ശേഷം പേരോടോ യാതൊന്നും അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല.

16. The magistrates knew nothing of where I had gone or what I was doing, for as yet I had disclosed nothing to the Jews, neither to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the magistrates, nor to the others who would be concerned about the matter.

17. അനന്തരം ഞാന് അവരോടുയെരൂശലേം ശൂന്യമായും അതിന്റെ വാതിലുകള് തീകൊണ്ടു വെന്തും കിടക്കുന്നതായി നാം അകപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ അനര്ത്ഥം നിങ്ങള് കാണുന്നുവല്ലോ; വരുവിന് ; നാം ഇനിയും നിന്ദാപാത്രമായിരിക്കാതവണ്ണം യെരൂശലേമിന്റെ മതില് പണിയുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

17. Afterward I said to them: 'You see the evil plight in which we stand: how Jerusalem lies in ruins and its gates have been gutted by fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we may no longer be an object of derision!'

18. എന്റെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കൈ എനിക്കു അനുകൂലമായിരുന്നതും രാജാവു എന്നോടു കല്പിച്ച വാക്കുകളും ഞാന് അറിയിച്ചപ്പോള് അവര്നാം എഴുന്നേറ്റു പണിയുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ അവര് ആ നല്ല പ്രവൃത്തിക്കായി അന്യോന്യം ധൈര്യപ്പെടുത്തി.

18. Then I explained to them how the favoring hand of my God had rested upon me, and what the king had said to me. They replied, 'Let us be up and building!' And they undertook the good work with vigor.

19. എന്നാല് ഹോരോന്യനായ സന് ബല്ലത്തും അമ്മോന്യനായ ദാസന് തോബീയാവും അരാബ്യനായ ഗേശെമും ഇതു കേട്ടിട്ടു ഞങ്ങളെ പരിഹസിച്ചു നിന്ദിച്ചു; നിങ്ങള് ചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ കാര്യം എന്തു? നിങ്ങള് രാജാവിനോടു മത്സരിപ്പാന് ഭാവിക്കുന്നുവോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

19. On hearing of this, Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite slave, and Geshem the Arab mocked us and ridiculed us. 'What is this that you are about?' they asked. 'Are you rebelling against the king?'

20. അതിന്നു ഞാന് അവരോടുസ്വര്ഗ്ഗത്തിലെ ദൈവം ഞങ്ങള്ക്കു കാര്യം സാധിപ്പിക്കും; ആകയാല് അവന്റെ ദാസന്മാരായ ഞങ്ങള് എഴുന്നേറ്റു പണിയും; നിങ്ങള്ക്കോ യെരൂശലേമില് ഒരു ഔഹരിയും അവകാശവും ജ്ഞാപകവുമില്ല എന്നുത്തരം പറഞ്ഞു.

20. My answer to them was this: 'It is the God of heaven who will grant us success. We, his servants, shall set about the rebuilding; but for you there is to be neither share nor claim nor memorial in Jerusalem.'
