1. അര്ത്ഥഹ് ശഷ്ടാരാജാവിന്റെ ഇരുപതാം ആണ്ടില് നീസാന് മാസത്തില് ഞാന് ഒരിക്കല് രാജാവിന്റെ മുമ്പാകെ ഇരുന്ന വീഞ്ഞു എടുത്തു അവന്നു കൊടുത്തു; ഞാന് ഇതിന്നു മുമ്പെ ഒരിക്കലും അവന്റെ സന്നിധിയില് കുണ്ഠിതനായിരുന്നിട്ടില്ല.

1. And it came to pass in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, [when] wine [was] before him, that I took the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had never been sad in his presence before.

2. രാജാവു എന്നോടുനിന്റെ മുഖം വാടിയിരിക്കുന്നതു എന്തു? നിനക്കു ദീനം ഒന്നും ഇല്ലല്ലോ; ഇതു മനോ ദുഃഖമല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നുമല്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

2. Therefore the king said to me, 'Why [is] your face sad, since you [are] not sick? This [is] nothing but sorrow of heart.' So I became dreadfully afraid,

3. അപ്പോള് ഞാന് ഏറ്റവും ഭയപ്പെട്ടു രാജാവിനോടുരാജാവു ദീര്ഘായുസ്സായിരിക്കട്ടെ; എന്റെ പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ കല്ലറകള് ഉള്ള പട്ടണം ശൂന്യമായും അതിന്റെ വാതിലുകള് തീകൊണ്ടു വെന്തും കിടക്കെ എന്റെ മുഖം വാടാതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നതു എങ്ങനെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. and said to the king, 'May the king live forever! Why should my face not be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' tombs, [lies] waste, and its gates are burned with fire?'

4. രാജാവു എന്നോടുനിന്റെ അപേക്ഷ എന്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു; ഉടനെ ഞാന് സ്വര്ഗ്ഗത്തിലെ ദൈവത്തോടു പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചിട്ടു,

4. Then the king said to me, 'What do you request?' So I prayed to the God of heaven.

5. രാജാവിനോടുരാജാവിന്നു തിരുവുള്ളമുണ്ടായി അടിയന്നു തിരുമുമ്പില് ദയ ലഭിച്ചു എങ്കില് അടിയനെ യെഹൂദയില് എന്റെ പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ കല്ലറകളുള്ള പട്ടണത്തിലേക്കു അതു പണിയേണ്ടതിന്നു ഒന്നു അയക്കേണമേ എന്നുണര്ത്തിച്ചു.

5. And I said to the king, 'If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' tombs, that I may rebuild it.'

6. അതിന്നു രാജാവു--രാജ്ഞിയും അരികെ ഇരുന്നിരുന്നു--നിന്റെ യാത്രെക്കു എത്രനാള് വേണം? നീ എപ്പോള് മടങ്ങിവരും എന്നു എന്നോടു ചോദിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ എന്നെ അയപ്പാന് രാജാവിന്നു സമ്മതമായി; ഞാന് ഒരു അവധിയും പറഞ്ഞു.

6. Then the king said to me (the queen also sitting beside him), 'How long will your journey be? And when will you return?' So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

7. രാജാവിന്നു തിരുവുള്ളമുണ്ടായി ഞാന് യെഹൂദയില് എത്തുംവരെ നദിക്കു അക്കരെയുള്ള ദേശാധിപതിമാര് എന്നെ കടത്തിവിടേണ്ടതിന്നു

7. Furthermore I said to the king, 'If it pleases the king, let letters be given to me for the governors [of the region] beyond the River, that they must permit me to pass through till I come to Judah,

8. അവര്ക്കും എഴുത്തുകളും ആലയത്തോടു ചേര്ന്ന കോട്ടവാതിലുകള്ക്കും പട്ടണത്തിന്റെ മതിലിന്നും ഞാന് ചെന്നു പാര്പ്പാനിരിക്കുന്ന വീട്ടിന്നും വേണ്ടി ഉത്തരം മുതലായവ ഉണ്ടാക്കുവാന് രാജാവിന്റെ വനവിചാരകനായ ആസാഫ് എനിക്കു മരം തരേണ്ടതിന്നു അവന്നു ഒരു എഴുത്തും നല്കേണമേ എന്നും ഞാന് രാജാവിനോടു അപേക്ഷിച്ചു. എന്റെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ദയയുള്ള കൈ എനിക്കു അനുകൂലമായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു രാജാവു അതു എനിക്കു തന്നു.

8. 'and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he must give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel which [pertains] to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house that I will occupy.' And the king granted [them] to me according to the good hand of my God upon me.

9. അങ്ങനെ ഞാന് നദിക്കു അക്കരെയുള്ള ദേശാധിപതിമാരുടെ അടുക്കല് വന്നു രാജാവിന്റെ എഴുത്തു അവര്ക്കും കൊടുത്തു. രാജാവു പടനായകന്മാരെയും കുതിരച്ചേവകരെയും എന്നോടുകൂടെ അയച്ചിരുന്നു.

9. Then I went to the governors [in the region] beyond the River, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.

10. ഹോരോന്യനായ സന് ബല്ലത്തും അമ്മോന്യനായ ദാസന് തോബീയാവും ഇതു കേട്ടപ്പോള് യിസ്രായേല്മക്കള്ക്കു ഗുണം ചെയ്വാന് ഒരു ആള് വന്നതു അവര്ക്കും ഏറ്റവും അനിഷ്ടമായി.

10. When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard [of it,] they were deeply disturbed that a man had come to seek the well-being of the children of Israel.

11. ഞാന് യെരൂശലേമില് എത്തി അവിടെ മൂന്നു ദിവസം താമസിച്ചശേഷം

11. So I came to Jerusalem and was there three days.

12. ഞാനും എന്നോടുകൂടെ ചില പുരുഷന്മാരും രാത്രിയില് എഴുന്നേറ്റു; എന്നാല് യെരൂശലേമില് ചെയ്വാന് എന്റെ ദൈവം എന്റെ മനസ്സില് തോന്നിച്ചിരുന്നതു ഞാന് ആരോടും പറഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ലായിരുന്നു; ഞാന് കയറിയിരുന്ന മൃഗം അല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊരു മൃഗവും എന്നോടുകൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല.

12. Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me; I told no one what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem; nor was there any animal with me, except the one on which I rode.

13. ഞാന് രാത്രിയില് താഴ്വരവാതില് വഴിയായി പെരുമ്പാമ്പുറവിങ്കലും കുപ്പവാതില്ക്കലും ചെന്നു യെരൂശലേമിന്റെ മതില് ഇടിഞ്ഞുകിടക്കുന്നതും വാതിലുകള് തീവെച്ചു ചുട്ടിരിക്കുന്നതും കണ്ടു.

13. And I went out by night through the Valley Gate to the Serpent Well and the Refuse Gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down and its gates which were burned with fire.

14. പിന്നെ ഞാന് ഉറവു വാതില്ക്കലേക്കും രാജാവിന്റെ കുളത്തിങ്കലേക്കും ചെന്നു; എന്നാല് ഞാന് കയറിയിരുന്ന മൃഗത്തിന്നു കടന്നുപോകുവാന് സ്ഥലം പോരാതിരുന്നു.

14. Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King's Pool, but [there was] no room for the animal under me to pass.

15. രാത്രിയില് തന്നേ ഞാന് തോട്ടിന്റെ അരികത്തുകൂടി ചെന്നു മതില് നോക്കി കണ്ടു താഴ്വരവാതിലിന് വഴിയായി മടങ്ങിപ്പോന്നു.

15. So I went up in the night by the valley, and viewed the wall; then I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned.

16. ഞാന് എവിടെപ്പോയി എന്നും എന്തു ചെയ്തു എന്നും പ്രമാണികളാരും അറിഞ്ഞില്ല; അന്നുവരെ ഞാന് യെഹൂദന്മാരോടോ പുരോഹിതന്മാരോടോ പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരോടോ പ്രമാണികളോടോ വേലയെടുക്കുന്ന ശേഷം പേരോടോ യാതൊന്നും അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല.

16. And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I had done; I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, or the others who did the work.

17. അനന്തരം ഞാന് അവരോടുയെരൂശലേം ശൂന്യമായും അതിന്റെ വാതിലുകള് തീകൊണ്ടു വെന്തും കിടക്കുന്നതായി നാം അകപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ അനര്ത്ഥം നിങ്ങള് കാണുന്നുവല്ലോ; വരുവിന് ; നാം ഇനിയും നിന്ദാപാത്രമായിരിക്കാതവണ്ണം യെരൂശലേമിന്റെ മതില് പണിയുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

17. Then I said to them, 'You see the distress that we [are] in, how Jerusalem [lies] waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come and let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer be a reproach.'

18. എന്റെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കൈ എനിക്കു അനുകൂലമായിരുന്നതും രാജാവു എന്നോടു കല്പിച്ച വാക്കുകളും ഞാന് അറിയിച്ചപ്പോള് അവര്നാം എഴുന്നേറ്റു പണിയുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ അവര് ആ നല്ല പ്രവൃത്തിക്കായി അന്യോന്യം ധൈര്യപ്പെടുത്തി.

18. And I told them of the hand of my God which had been good upon me, and also of the king's words that he had spoken to me. So they said, 'Let us rise up and build.' Then they set their hands to [this] good [work.]

19. എന്നാല് ഹോരോന്യനായ സന് ബല്ലത്തും അമ്മോന്യനായ ദാസന് തോബീയാവും അരാബ്യനായ ഗേശെമും ഇതു കേട്ടിട്ടു ഞങ്ങളെ പരിഹസിച്ചു നിന്ദിച്ചു; നിങ്ങള് ചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ കാര്യം എന്തു? നിങ്ങള് രാജാവിനോടു മത്സരിപ്പാന് ഭാവിക്കുന്നുവോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

19. But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard [of it,] they laughed at us and despised us, and said, 'What [is] this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?'

20. അതിന്നു ഞാന് അവരോടുസ്വര്ഗ്ഗത്തിലെ ദൈവം ഞങ്ങള്ക്കു കാര്യം സാധിപ്പിക്കും; ആകയാല് അവന്റെ ദാസന്മാരായ ഞങ്ങള് എഴുന്നേറ്റു പണിയും; നിങ്ങള്ക്കോ യെരൂശലേമില് ഒരു ഔഹരിയും അവകാശവും ജ്ഞാപകവുമില്ല എന്നുത്തരം പറഞ്ഞു.

20. So I answered them, and said to them, 'The God of heaven Himself will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build, but you have no heritage or right or memorial in Jerusalem.'
