1. മകനേ, എന്റെ വചനങ്ങളെ പ്രമാണിച്ചു എന്റെ കല്പനകളെ നിന്റെ ഉള്ളില് സംഗ്രഹിച്ചുകൊള്ക.

1. My son, keep my words, and treasure my commands.

2. നീ ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു എന്റെ കല്പനകളെയും ഉപദേശത്തെയും നിന്റെ കണ്ണിന്റെ കൃഷ്ണമണിയെപ്പോലെ കാത്തുകൊള്ക.

2. Keep my commands and live, my teaching as the apple of your eye;

3. നിന്റെ വിരലിന്മേല് അവയെ കെട്ടുക; ഹൃദയത്തിന്റെ പലകയില് എഴുതുക.

3. Bind them on your fingers, write them on the tablet of your heart.

4. ജ്ഞാനത്തോടുനീ എന്റെ സഹോദരി എന്നു പറക; വിവേകത്തിന്നു സഖി എന്നു പേര് വിളിക്ക.

4. Say to Wisdom, 'You are my sister!' call Understanding, 'Friend!'

5. അവ നിന്നെ പരസ്ത്രീയുടെ കയ്യില്നിന്നും ചക്കരവാക്കു പറയുന്ന അന്യസ്ത്രീയുടെ വശത്തുനിന്നും കാക്കും.

5. That they may keep you from another's wife, from the adulteress with her smooth words.

6. ഞാന് എന്റെ വീട്ടിന്റെ കിളിവാതില്ക്കല് അഴിക്കിടയില്കൂടി നോക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോള്

6. For at the window of my house, through my lattice I looked out--

7. ഭോഷന്മാരുടെ ഇടയില് ഒരുത്തനെ കണ്ടു; യൌവനക്കാരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തില് ബുദ്ധിഹീനനായോരു യുവാവിനെ കണ്ടറിഞ്ഞു.

7. And I saw among the simple ones, I observed among the young men, a youth with no sense,

8. അവന് വൈകുന്നേരം, സന്ധ്യാസമയത്തു, ഇരുട്ടും അന്ധകാരവുമുള്ള ഒരു രാത്രിയില്,

8. Going along the street near the corner, then walking in the direction of her house--

9. അവളുടെ വീട്ടിന്റെ കോണിന്നരികെ വീഥിയില്കൂടി കടന്നു, അവളുടെ വീട്ടിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിയെ നടന്നു ചെല്ലുന്നു.

9. In the twilight, at dusk of day, at the time of the dark of night.

10. പെട്ടെന്നു ഇതാ, വേശ്യാവസ്ത്രം ധരിച്ചും ഹൃദയത്തില് ഉപായം പൂണ്ടും ഉള്ളോരു സ്ത്രീ അവനെ എതിരേറ്റുവരുന്നു.

10. And lo! the woman comes to meet him, robed like a harlot, with secret designs--

11. അവള് മോഹപരവശയും തന്നിഷ്ടക്കാരത്തിയും ആകുന്നു; അവളുടെ കാല് വീട്ടില് അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കയില്ല.

11. She is fickle and unruly, in her home her feet cannot rest;

12. ഇപ്പോള് അവളെ വീഥിയിലും പിന്നെ വിശാലസ്ഥലത്തും കാണാം; ഔരോ കോണിലും അവള് പതിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

12. Now she is in the streets, now in the open squares, and at every corner she lurks in ambush--

13. അവള് അവനെ പിടിച്ചു ചുംബിച്ചു, ലജ്ജകൂടാതെ അവനോടു പറയുന്നതു

13. When she seizes him, she kisses him, and with an impudent look says to him:

14. എനിക്കു സമാധാനയാഗങ്ങള് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു; ഇന്നു ഞാന് എന്റെ നേര്ച്ചകളെ കഴിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

14. 'I owed peace offerings, and today I have fulfilled my vows;

15. അതുകൊണ്ടു ഞാന് നിന്നെ കാണ്മാന് ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു. നിന്നെ എതിരേല്പാന് പുറപ്പെട്ടു നിന്നെ കണ്ടെത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

15. So I came out to meet you, to look for you, and I have found you!

16. ഞാന് എന്റെ കട്ടിലിന്മേല് പരവതാനികളും മിസ്രയീമ്യനൂല്കൊണ്ടുള്ള വരിയന് പടങ്ങളും വിരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

16. With coverlets I have spread my couch, with brocaded cloths of Egyptian linen;

17. മൂറും അകിലും ലവംഗവുംകൊണ്ടു ഞാന് എന്റെ മെത്ത സുഗന്ധമാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

17. I have sprinkled my bed with myrrh, with aloes, and with cinnamon.

18. വരിക; വെളുക്കുംവരെ നമുക്കു പ്രേമത്തില് രമിക്കാം; കാമവിലാസങ്ങളാല് നമുക്കു സുഖിക്കാം.

18. 'Come, let us drink our fill of love, until morning, let us feast on love!

19. പുരുഷന് വീട്ടില് ഇല്ല; ദൂരയാത്ര പോയിരിക്കുന്നു;

19. For my husband is not at home, he has gone on a long journey;

20. പണമടിശ്ശീല കൂടെ കൊണ്ടുപോയിട്ടുണ്ടു; പൌര്ണ്ണമാസിക്കേ വീട്ടില് വന്നെത്തുകയുള്ളു.

20. A bag of money he took with him, not till the full moon will he return home.'

21. ഇങ്ങനെ ഏറിയോരു ഇമ്പവാക്കുകളാല് അവള് അവനെ വശീകരിച്ചു അധരമാധുര്യംകൊണ്ടു അവനെ നിര്ബ്ബന്ധിക്കുന്നു.

21. She wins him over by her repeated urging, with her smooth lips she leads him astray;

22. അറുക്കുന്നേടത്തേക്കു കാളയും ചങ്ങലയിലേക്കു ഭോഷനും പോകുന്നതുപോലെയും,

22. He follows her stupidly, like an ox that is led to slaughter; Like a stag that minces toward the net,

23. പക്ഷി ജീവഹാനിക്കുള്ളതെന്നറിയാതെ കണിയിലേക്കു ബദ്ധപ്പെടുന്നതുപോലെയും കരളില് അസ്ത്രം തറെക്കുവോളം അവന് അവളുടെ പിന്നാലെ ചെല്ലുന്നു.

23. till an arrow pierces its liver; Like a bird that rushes into a snare, unaware that its life is at stake.

24. ആകയാല് മക്കളേ, എന്റെ വാക്കു കേള്പ്പിന് ; എന്റെ വായിലെ വചനങ്ങളെ ശ്രദ്ധിപ്പിന് .

24. So now, O children, listen to me, be attentive to the words of my mouth!

25. നിന്റെ മനസ്സു അവളുടെ വഴിയിലേക്കു ചായരുതു; അവളുടെ പാതകളിലേക്കു നീ തെറ്റിച്ചെല്ലുകയുമരുതു.

25. Let not your heart turn to her ways, go not astray in her paths;

26. അവള് വീഴിച്ച ഹതന്മാര് അനേകര്; അവള് കൊന്നുകളഞ്ഞവര് ആകെ വലിയോരു കൂട്ടം ആകുന്നു.

26. For many are those she has struck down dead, numerous, those she has slain.

27. അവളുടെ വീടു പാതാളത്തിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിയാകുന്നു; അതു മരണത്തിന്റെ അറകളിലേക്കു ചെല്ലുന്നു.

27. Her house is made up of ways to the nether world, leading down into the chambers of death.
