1. യോനെക്കു ഇതു അത്യന്തം അനിഷ്ടമായി, അവന്നു കോപം വന്നു.

1. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

2. അവന് യഹോവയോടു പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചുഅയ്യോ, യഹോവേ, ഞാന് എന്റെ ദേശത്തു ആയിരുന്നപ്പോള് ഞാന് പറഞ്ഞ വാക്കു ഇതു തന്നേ അല്ലയോ? അതുകൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു ഞാന് തര്ശീശിലേക്കു ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു ഔടിപ്പോയതു; നീ കൃപയും കരുണയും ദീര്ഘക്ഷമയും മഹാദയയുമുള്ള ദൈവമായി അനര്ത്ഥത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു അനുതപിക്കുന്നവന് എന്നു ഞാന് അറിഞ്ഞു.

2. And he prayed unto the LORD and said, I pray thee, O LORD, [was] this not what I said when I was yet in my country? Therefore I hastened to flee unto Tarshish, for I knew that thou [art] a gracious God and full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy, and dost repent when thou art come to take punishment.

3. ആകയാല് യഹോവേ, എന്റെ പ്രാണനെ എടുത്തുകൊള്ളേണമേ; ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാള് മരിക്കുന്നതു എനിക്കു നന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me, for I would rather die than live.

4. നീ കോപിക്കുന്നതു വിഹിതമോ എന്നു യഹോവ ചോദിച്ചു.

4. Then the LORD said, Art thou so angry?

5. അനന്തരം യോനാ നഗരം വിട്ടുചെന്നു നഗരത്തിന്റെ കിഴക്കേവശത്തു ഇരുന്നു; അവിടെ ഒരു കുടിലുണ്ടാക്കി നഗരത്തിന്നു എന്തു ഭവിക്കും എന്നു കാണുവോളം അതിന് കീഴെ തണലില് പാര്ത്തു.

5. And Jonah went out of the city and sat towards the east side of the city, and there made him a booth and sat under it in the shade until he might see what would become of the city.

6. യോനയെ അവന്റെ സങ്കടത്തില്നിന്നു വിടുവിപ്പാന് തക്കവണ്ണം അവന്റെ തലെക്കു തണല് ആയിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു യഹോവയായ ദൈവം ഒരു ആവണകൂ കല്പിച്ചുണ്ടാക്കി, അതു അവന്നു മീതെ വളര്ന്നു പൊങ്ങി; യോനാ ആവണകൂനിമിത്തം അത്യന്തം സന്തോഷിച്ചു.

6. And the LORD God prepared a gourd and made [it] to come up over Jonah that it might be a shadow over his head to deliver him from his evil. So Jonah was exceeding glad for the gourd.

7. പിറ്റെന്നാള് പുലര്ന്നപ്പോള് ദൈവം ഒരു പുഴുവിനെ കല്പിച്ചാക്കി; അതു ആവണകൂ കുത്തിക്കളഞ്ഞു, അതു വാടിപ്പോയി.

7. But God [also] prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd [so] that it withered.

8. സൂര്യന് ഉദിച്ചപ്പോള് ദൈവം അത്യഷ്ണമുള്ളോരു കിഴക്കന് കാറ്റു കല്പിച്ചുവരുത്തി; വെയില് യോനയുടെ തലയില് കൊള്ളുകയാല് അവന് ക്ഷീണിച്ചു മരിച്ചാല് കൊള്ളാം എന്നു ഇച്ഛിച്ചുജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാല് മരിക്കുന്നതു എനിക്കു നന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah that he fainted and wished in his soul to die and said, [It] is better for me to die than to live.

9. ദൈവം യോനയോടുനീ ആവണകൂനിമിത്തം കോപിക്കുന്നതു വിഹിതമോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നു അവന് ഞാന് മരണപര്യന്തം കോപിക്കുന്നതു വിഹിതം തന്നേ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

9. And God said to Jonah, Art thou so angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, [even] unto death.

10. അതിന്നു യഹേഅവ നീ അദ്ധ്വനിക്കയോ വളര്ത്തുകയൊ ചെയ്യാതെ ഒരു രാത്രിയില് ഉണ്ടായ്വരികയും ഒരു രാത്രിയില് നശിച്ചുപോകയും ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്ന ആവണക്കിനെക്കുറിച്ചു നിനക്കു അയ്യോഭാവം തോന്നുന്നുവല്ലോ.

10. Then the LORD said, Thou hast had pity on the gourd for which thou hast not laboured, neither didst [thou] make it grow; which came up in a night and perished in a night:

11. എന്നാല് വലങ്കയ്യും ഇടങ്കയ്യും തമ്മില് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞുകൂടാത്ത ഒരു ല്കഷത്തിരുപതിനായിരത്തില് ചില്വാനം മനുഷ്യരും അനേകം മൃഗങ്ങളുമുള്ള മഹാനഗരമായ നീനെവേയോടു എനിക്കു അയ്യോഭാവം തോന്നരുതോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

11. And shall I not spare Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons, that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand, and many animals?:
