1. അനന്തരം അമ്മോന്യനായ നാഹാശ് പുറപ്പെട്ടുവന്നു ഗിലെയാദിലെ യാബേശിന്നു നേരെ പാളയം ഇറങ്ങി; യാബേശ് നിവാസികള് ഒക്കെയും നാഹാശിനോടുഞങ്ങളോടു ഒരു ഉടമ്പടി ചെയ്യേണം; എന്നാല് ഞങ്ങള് നിന്നെ സേവിക്കാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

1. Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh�gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

2. അമ്മോന്യനായ നാഹാശ് അവരോടുനിങ്ങളുടെ വലങ്കണ്ണൊക്കെയും ചുഴന്നെടുക്കയും എല്ലായിസ്രായേലിന്മേലും ഈ നിന്ദ വരുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യും എന്നുള്ള സമ്മതത്തിന്മേല് ഞാന് നിങ്ങളോടു ഉടമ്പടി ചെയ്യാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

2. And Nahash the Ammonite said unto them, On this condition will I make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

3. യാബേശിലെ മൂപ്പന്മാര് അവനോടുഞങ്ങള് യിസ്രായേല്ദേശത്തെല്ലാടവും ദൂതന്മാരെ അയപ്പാന് തക്കവണ്ണം ഞങ്ങള്ക്കു ഏഴു ദിവസത്തെ ഇട തരേണം; ഞങ്ങളെ രക്ഷിപ്പാന് ആരുമില്ലെങ്കില് ഞങ്ങള് നിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ഇറങ്ങിവരാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the borders of Israel: and then, if there be none to save us, we will come out to thee.

4. ദൂതന്മാര് ശൌലിന്റെ ഗിബെയയില് ചെന്നു ആ വര്ത്തമാനം ജനത്തെ പറഞ്ഞു കേള്പ്പിച്ചു; ജനമെല്ലാം ഉറക്കെ കരഞ്ഞു.

4. Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and spake these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

5. അപ്പോള് ഇതാ, ശൌല് കന്നുകാലികളെയും കൊണ്ടു വയലില്നിന്നു വരുന്നു. ജനം കരയുന്ന സംഗതി എന്തു എന്നു ശൌല് ചോദിച്ചു. അവര് യാബേശ്യരുടെ വര്ത്തമാനം അവനെ അറിയിച്ചു.

5. And, behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the words of the men of Jabesh.

6. ശൌല് വര്ത്തമാനം കേട്ടപ്പോള് ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ആത്മാവു അവന്റെമേല് ശക്തിയോടെ വന്നു; അവന്റെ കോപം ഏറ്റവും ജ്വലിച്ചു.

6. And the spirit of God came mightily upon Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.

7. അവന് ഒരേര് കാളയെ പിടിച്ചു കഷണംകഷണമായി ഖണ്ഡിച്ചു ദൂതന്മാരുടെ കയ്യില് യിസ്രായേല്ദേശത്തെല്ലാടവും കൊടുത്തയച്ചുആരെങ്കിലും ശൌലിന്റെയും ശമൂവേലിന്റെയും പിന്നാലെ പുറപ്പെട്ടുവരാതിരുന്നാല് അവന്റെ കാളകളെ ഇങ്ങനെ ചെയ്യും എന്നു പറയിച്ചു. അപ്പോള് യഹോവയുടെ ഭീതി ജനത്തിന്മേല് വീണു, അവര് ഏകമനസ്സോടെ പുറപ്പെട്ടു.

7. And he took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the dread of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

8. അവന് ബേസെക്കില്വെച്ചു അവരെ എണ്ണി; യിസ്രായേല്യര് മൂന്നു ലക്ഷവും യെഹൂദ്യര് മുപ്പതിനായിരവും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

8. And he numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

9. വന്ന ദൂതന്മാരോടു അവര്നിങ്ങള് ഗിലെയാദിലെ യാബേശ്യരോടുനാളെ വെയില് മൂക്കുമ്പോഴേക്കു നിങ്ങള്ക്കു രക്ഷ ഉണ്ടാകും എന്നു പറവിന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ദൂതന്മാര് ചെന്നു യാബേശ്യരോടു അറിയിച്ചപ്പോള് അവര് സന്തോഷിച്ചു.

9. And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh�gilead, Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, ye shall have deliverance. And the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

10. പിന്നെ യാബേശ്യര്നാളെ ഞങ്ങള് നിങ്ങളുടെ അടുക്കല് ഇറങ്ങിവരും; നിങ്ങള്ക്കു ബോധിച്ചതൊക്കെയും ഞങ്ങളോടു ചെയ്തുകൊള്വിന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു.

10. Therefore the men of Jabesh said, Tomorrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

11. പിറ്റെന്നാള് ശൌല് ജനത്തെ മൂന്നു കൂട്ടമായി വിഭാഗിച്ചു; അവര് പ്രഭാതയാമത്തില് പാളയത്തിന്റെ നടുവിലേക്കു ചെന്നു വെയില് മൂക്കുംവരെ അമ്മോന്യരെ സംഹരിച്ചു; ശേഷിച്ചവരോ രണ്ടു പേര് ഒന്നിച്ചിരിക്കാതവണ്ണം ചിതറിപ്പോയി.

11. And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and smote the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

12. അനന്തരം ജനം ശമൂവേലിനോടുശൌല് ഞങ്ങള്ക്കു രാജാവായിരിക്കുമോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞതു ആര്? അവരെ ഏല്പിച്ചുതരേണം; ഞങ്ങള് അവരെ കൊന്നുകളയും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

12. And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

13. അതിന്നു ശൌല്ഇന്നു ഒരു മനുഷ്യനെയും കൊല്ലരുതു; ഇന്നു യഹോവ യസ്രായേലിന്നു രക്ഷ വരുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

13. And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for today the LORD hath wrought deliverance in Israel.

14. പിന്നെ ശമൂവേല് ജനത്തോടുവരുവിന് ; നാം ഗില്ഗാലില് ചെന്നു, അവിടെവെച്ചു രാജത്വം പുതുക്കുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

14. Then said Samuel to the people, Come and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

15. അങ്ങനെ ജനമെല്ലാം ഗില്ഗാലില് ചെന്നു; അവര് ശൌലിനെ ഗില്ഗാലില് യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില്വെച്ചു രാജാവാക്കി. അവര് അവിടെ യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില് സമാധാനയാഗങ്ങള് കഴിച്ചു; ശൌലും യിസ്രായേല്യരൊക്കെയും ഏറ്റവും സന്തോഷിച്ചു.

15. And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
