1. അനന്തരം സാത്താന് യിസ്രായേലിന്നു വിരോധമായി എഴുന്നേറ്റു യിസ്രായേലിനെ എണ്ണുവാന് ദാവീദിന്നു തോന്നിച്ചു.

1. Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.

2. ദാവീദ് യോവാബീനോടും ജനത്തിന്റെ പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരോടുംനിങ്ങള് ചെന്നു ബേര്-ശേബമുതല് ദാന് വരെ യിസ്രായേലിനെ എണ്ണി അവരുടെ സംഖ്യ ഞാന് അറിയേണ്ടതിന്നു കൊണ്ടുവരുവിന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

2. So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, 'Go and count the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are.'

3. അതിന്നു യോവാബ്യഹോവ തന്റെ ജനത്തെ ഉള്ളതില് നൂറിരട്ടിയായി വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കട്ടെ; എങ്കിലും എന്റെ യജമാനനായ രാജാവേ, അവര് ഒക്കെയും യജമാനന്റെ ദാസന്മാരല്ലയോ? യജമാനന് ഈ കാര്യം അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നതു എന്തു? യിസ്രായേലിന്നു കുറ്റത്തിന്റെ കാരണമായി തീരുന്നതു എന്തിന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. But Joab replied, 'May the LORD multiply his troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all my lord's subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?'

4. എന്നാല് യോവാബ് രാജാവിന്റെ കല്പന അനുസരിക്കേണ്ടിവന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ടു യോവാബ് പുറപ്പെട്ടു എല്ലായിസ്രായേലിലുംകൂടി സഞ്ചരിച്ചു യെരൂശലേമിലേക്കു മടങ്ങിവന്നു.

4. The king's word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem.

5. യോവാബ് ജനത്തെ എണ്ണിയ സംഖ്യ ദാവീദിന്നു കൊടുത്തുയിസ്രായേലില് ആയുധപാണികള് എല്ലാംകൂടി പതിനൊന്നുലക്ഷംപേര്. യെഹൂദയില് ആയുധപാണികള് നാലുലക്ഷത്തെഴുപതിനായിരം പേര്.

5. Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.

6. എന്നാല് രാജാവിന്റെ കല്പന യോവാബിന്നു വെറുപ്പായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവന് ലേവിയെയും ബെന്യാമീനെയും അവരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തില് എണ്ണിയില്ല.

6. But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king's command was repulsive to him.

7. ദൈവത്തിന്നു ഈ കാര്യം അനിഷ്ടമായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവന് യിസ്രായേലിനെ ബാധിച്ചു.

7. This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.

8. അപ്പോള് ദാവീദ് ദൈവത്തോടുഈ കാര്യം ചെയ്തതിനാല് ഞാന് മഹാപാപം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നുഎന്നാല് അടിയന്റെ അകൃത്യം ക്ഷമിക്കേണമേഞാന് വലിയ ഭോഷത്വം ചെയ്തുപോയി എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. Then David said to God, 'I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.'

9. യഹോവ ദാവീദിന്റെ ദര്ശകനായ ഗാദിനോടു അരുളിച്ചെയ്തതെന്തെന്നാല്

9. The LORD said to Gad, David's seer,

10. നീ ചെന്നു ദാവീദിനോടുഞാന് മൂന്നു കാര്യം നിന്റെ മുമ്പില് വെക്കുന്നു; അവയില് ഒന്നു തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തുകൊള്ക; അതു ഞാന് നിന്നോടു ചെയ്യും എന്നു യഹോവ അരുളിച്ചെയ്യുന്നു എന്നു പറക.

10. 'Go and tell David,`This is what the LORD says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.''

11. അങ്ങനെ ഗാദ് ദാവീദിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു അവനോടുയഹോവ ഇപ്രകാരം അരുളിച്ചെയ്യുന്നു

11. So Gad went to David and said to him, 'This is what the LORD says:`Take your choice:

12. മൂന്നു സംവത്സരത്തെ ക്ഷാമമോ, നിന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളുടെ വാള് നിന്നെ തുടര്ന്നെത്തി നീ മൂന്നു മാസം നിന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളാല് നശിക്കയോ, ദേശത്തു മൂന്നു ദിവസം യഹോവയുടെ വാളായ മാഹാമാരി ഉണ്ടായി യിസ്രായേല്ദേശത്തൊക്കെയും യഹോവയുടെ ദൂതന് സംഹാരം ചെയ്കയോ ഇവയില് ഒന്നു തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തുകൊള്ക. എന്നെ അയച്ചവനോടു ഞാന് എന്തൊരു മറുപടി പറയേണ്ടു എന്നു ആലോചിച്ചുനോക്കുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

12. three years of famine, three months of being swept away before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the LORD--days of plague in the land, with the angel of the LORD ravaging every part of Israel.' Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me.'

13. ദാവീദ് ഗാദിനോടുഞാന് വലിയ വിഷമത്തിലായിരിക്കുന്നു; ഞാന് ഇപ്പോള് യഹോവയുടെ കയ്യില് തന്നേ വീഴട്ടെ; അവന്റെ കരുണ ഏറ്റവും വലിയതല്ലോ; മനുഷ്യന്റെ കയ്യില് ഞാന് വീഴരുതേ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

13. David said to Gad, 'I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is very great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.'

14. അങ്ങനെ യഹോവ ഇസ്രായേലില് മഹാമാരി അയച്ചു; യിസ്രായേലില് എഴുപതിനായിരംപേര് വീണുപോയി.

14. So the LORD sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.

15. ദൈവം യെരൂശലേമിനെ നശിപ്പിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു ഒരു ദൂതനെ അവിടെ അയച്ചു; അവന് നശിപ്പിപ്പാന് ഭാവിക്കുമ്പോള് യഹോവ കണ്ടു ആ അനര്ത്ഥത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു അനുതപിച്ചു നാശകദൂതനോടുമതി, നിന്റെ കൈ പിന് വലിക്ക എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു, യഹോവയുടെ ദൂതന് യെബൂസ്യനായ ഒര്ന്നാന്റെ കളത്തിന്നരികെ നില്ക്കയായിരുന്നു.

15. And God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem. But as the angel was doing so, the LORD saw it and was grieved because of the calamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, 'Enough! Withdraw your hand.' The angel of the LORD was then standing at the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

16. ദാവീദ് തല പൊക്കി, യഹോവയുടെ ദൂതന് വാള് ഊരി യെരൂശലേമിന്നു മീതെ നീട്ടിപ്പിടിച്ചുംകൊണ്ടും ഭൂമിക്കും ആകാശത്തിന്നും മദ്ധ്യേ നിലക്കുന്നതു കണ്ടു ദാവീദും മൂപ്പന്മാരും രട്ടുടുത്തു സാഷ്ടാംഗം വീണു.

16. David looked up and saw the angel of the LORD standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell face down.

17. ദാവീദ് ദൈവത്തോടുജനത്തെ എണ്ണുവാന് പറഞ്ഞവന് ഞാനല്ലയോ? ദോഷം ചെയ്ത പാപി ഞാന് ആകുന്നു; ഈ ആടുകള് എന്തു ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു? യഹോവേ, എന്റെ ദൈവമേ, നിന്റെ കൈ ബാധക്കായിട്ടു നിന്റെ ജനത്തിന്മേല് അല്ല, എന്റെമേലും എന്റെ പിതൃഭവനത്തിന്മേലും ഇരിക്കട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

17. David said to God, 'Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I am the one who has sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? O LORD my God, let your hand fall upon me and my family, but do not let this plague remain on your people.'

18. അപ്പോള് യഹോവയുടെ ദൂതന് ഗാദിനോടു ദാവീദ് ചെന്നു യെബൂസ്യനായ ഒര്ന്നാന്റെ കളത്തില് യഹോവേക്കു ഒരു യാഗപീഠം പണിയേണമെന്നു ദാവീദിനോടു പറവാന് കല്പിച്ചു.

18. Then the angel of the LORD ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

19. യഹോവയുടെ നാമത്തില് ഗാദ് പറഞ്ഞ വചനപ്രകാരം ദാവീദ് ചെന്നു.

19. So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the LORD.

20. ഒര്ന്നാന് തിരിഞ്ഞു ദൂതനെ കണ്ടു തന്റെ നാലു പുത്രന്മാരുമായി ഒളിച്ചു. ഒര്ന്നാന് കോതമ്പു മെതിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കയായിരുന്നു.

20. While Araunah was threshing wheat, he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves.

21. ദാവീദ് ഒര്ന്നാന്റെ അടുക്കല് വന്നപ്പോള് ഒര്ന്നാന് നോക്കി ദാവീദിനെ കണ്ടു കളത്തില്നിന്നു പുറത്തുചെന്നു ദാവീദിന്റെ മുമ്പില് സാഷ്ടാംഗം വീണു നമസ്കരിച്ചു.

21. Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing-floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.

22. ദാവീദ് ഒര്ന്നാനോടുഈ കളത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥലത്തു ഞാന് യഹോവേക്കു ഒരു യാഗപീഠം പണിയേണ്ടതിന്നു അതു എനിക്കു തരേണം; ബാധ ജനത്തെ വിട്ടുമാറേണ്ടതിന്നു നീ അതു മുഴുവിലെക്കു എനിക്കു തരേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

22. David said to him, 'Let me have the site of your threshing-floor so that I can build an altar to the LORD, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.'

23. അതിന്നു ഒര്ന്നാന് ദാവീദിനോടുഅതു എടുത്തുകൊള്ക; യജമാനനായ രാജാവിന്റെ പ്രസാദംപോലെ ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടാലും; ഇതാ ഞാന് ഹോമയാഗത്തിന്നു കാളകളെയും വിറകിന്നു മെതിവണ്ടികളെയും ഭോജനയാഗത്തിന്നു കോതമ്പിനെയും തരുന്നു; എല്ലാം ഞാന് തരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

23. Araunah said to David, 'Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing-sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this.'

24. ദാവീദ് രാജാവു ഒര്ന്നാനോടുഅങ്ങനെ അല്ല; ഞാന് മുഴുവിലെക്കേ അതു വാങ്ങുകയുള്ളു; നിനക്കുള്ളതു ഞാന് യഹോവെക്കായിട്ടു എടുക്കയില്ല; ചെലവുകൂടാതെ ഹോമയാഗം കഴിക്കയും ഇല്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

24. But King David replied to Araunah, 'No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the LORD what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.'

25. അങ്ങനെ ദാവീദ് ആ സ്ഥലത്തിന്നു അറുനൂറു ശേക്കെല് പൊന്നു ഒര്ന്നാന്നു കൊടുത്തു.

25. So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels of gold for the site.

26. ദാവീദ് അവിടെ യഹോവേക്കു ഒരു യാഗപീഠംപണിതു ഹോമയാഗങ്ങളും സമാധാനയാഗങ്ങളും കഴിച്ചു യഹോവയോടു പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചു; അവന് ആകാശത്തില്നിന്നു ഹോമപീഠത്തിന്മേല് തീ ഇറക്കി അവന്നു ഉത്തരം അരുളി.

26. David built an altar to the LORD there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the LORD, and the LORD answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.

27. യഹോവ ദൂതനോടു കല്പിച്ചു; അവന് തന്റെ വാള് വീണ്ടും ഉറയില് ഇട്ടു.

27. Then the LORD spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.

28. ആ കാലത്തു യെബൂസ്യനായ ഒര്ന്നാന്റെ കളത്തില്വെച്ചു യഹോവ തന്റെ പ്രാര്ത്ഥനെക്കു ഉത്തരമരുളി എന്നു ദാവീദ് കണ്ടിട്ടു അവിടെ യാഗം കഴിച്ചു.

28. At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him on the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there.

29. മോശെ മരുഭൂമിയില് വെച്ചു ഉണ്ടാക്കിയിരുന്ന യഹോവയുടെ തിരുനിവാസവും ഹോമപീഠവും അന്നു ഗിബെയോനിലെ പൂജാഗിരിയില് ആയിരുന്നു.

29. The tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses had made in the desert, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.

30. യഹോവയുടെ ദൂതന്റെ വാളിനെ പേടിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു ദൈവത്തോടു അരുളപ്പാടു ചോദിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവിടെ ചെല്ലുവാന് ദാവീദിന്നു കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല.

30. But David could not go before it to enquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
