1. മര്ത്യന്നു ഭൂമിയില് യുദ്ധസേവയില്ലയോ? അവന്റെ ജീവകാലം കൂലിക്കാരന്റെ ജീവകാലംപോലെ തന്നേ.

1. Is not man's life on earth a drudgery? Are not his days those of a hireling?

2. വേലക്കാരന് നിഴല് വാഞ്ഛിക്കുന്നതുപോലെയും കൂലിക്കാരന് കൂലിക്കു കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെയും

2. He is a slave who longs for the shade, a hireling who waits for his wages.

3. വ്യര്ത്ഥമാസങ്ങള് എനിക്കു അവകാശമായ്വന്നു, കഷ്ടരാത്രികള് എനിക്കു ഔഹരിയായ്തീര്ന്നു.

3. So I have been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been told off for me.

4. കിടക്കുന്നേരംഞാന് എപ്പോള് എഴുന്നേലക്കും എന്നു പറയുന്നു; രാത്രിയോ ദീര്ഘിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു; വെളുക്കുവോളം എനിക്കുരുളുക തന്നേ പണി.

4. If in bed I say, 'When shall I arise?' then the night drags on; I am filled with restlessness until the dawn.

5. എന്റെ ദേഹം പുഴുവും മണ്കട്ടയും ഉടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നു. എന്റെ ത്വക്കില് പുണ്വായ്കള് അടഞ്ഞു വീണ്ടും പഴുത്തുപൊട്ടുന്നു.

5. My flesh is clothed with worms and scabs; my skin cracks and festers;

6. എന്റെ നാളുകള് നെയ്ത്തോടത്തിലും വേഗതയുള്ളതു; പ്രത്യാശകൂടാതെ അവ കഴിഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നു.

6. My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle; they come to an end without hope.

7. എന്റെ ജീവന് ഒരു ശ്വാസം മാത്രം എന്നോര്ക്കേണമേ; എന്റെ കണ്ണു ഇനി നന്മയെ കാണുകയില്ല.

7. Remember that my life is like the wind; I shall not see happiness again.

8. എന്നെ കാണുന്നവന്റെ കണ്ണു ഇനി എന്നെ കാണുകയില്ല; നിന്റെ കണ്ണു എന്നെ നോക്കും; ഞാനോ, ഇല്ലാതിരിക്കും.

8. The eye that now sees me shall no more behold me; as you look at me, I shall be gone.

9. മേഘം ക്ഷയിച്ചു മാഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നതുപോലെ പാതാളത്തിലിറങ്ങുന്നവന് വീണ്ടും കയറിവരുന്നില്ല.

9. As a cloud dissolves and vanishes, so he who goes down to the nether world shall come up no more.

10. അവന് തന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു മടങ്ങിവരികയില്ല; അവന്റെ ഇടം ഇനി അവനെ അറികയുമില്ല.

10. He shall not again return to his house; his place shall know him no more.

11. ആകയാല് ഞാന് എന്റെ വായടെക്കയില്ല; എന്റെ മന:പീഡയില് ഞാന് സംസാരിക്കും; എന്റെ മനോവ്യസനത്തില് ഞാന് സങ്കടം പറയും.

11. My own utterance I will not restrain; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

12. നീ എനിക്കു കാവലാക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു ഞാന് കടലോ കടലാനയോ ആകുന്നുവോ?

12. Am I the sea, or a monster of the deep, that you place a watch over me? Why have you set me up as an object of attack; or why should I be a target for you?

13. എന്റെ കട്ടില് എന്നെ ആശ്വസിപ്പിക്കും; എന്റെ മെത്ത എന്റെ വ്യസനം ശമിപ്പിക്കും എന്നു ഞാന് പറഞ്ഞാല്

13. When I say, 'My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint,'

14. നീ സ്വപ്നംകൊണ്ടു എന്നെ അരട്ടുന്നു; ദര്ശനംകൊണ്ടും എന്നെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.

14. Then you affright me with dreams and with visions terrify me,

15. ആകയാല് ഞാന് ഞെക്കിക്കുലയും ഈ അസ്ഥിക്കൂടത്തെക്കാള് മരണവും തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നു.

15. So that I should prefer choking and death rather than my pains.

16. ഞാന് അഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു; എന്നേക്കും ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കയില്ല; എന്നെ വിടേണമേ; എന്റെ ജീവകാലം ഒരു ശ്വാസം മാത്രമല്ലോ.

16. I waste away: I cannot live forever; let me alone, for my days are but a breath.

17. മര്ത്യനെ നീ ഗണ്യമാക്കേണ്ടതിന്നും അവന്റെമേല് ദൃഷ്ടിവെക്കേണ്ടതിന്നും

17. What is man, that you make much of him, or pay him any heed?

18. അവനെ രാവിലെതോറും സന്ദര്ശിച്ചു മാത്രതോറും പരീക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നും അവന് എന്തുള്ളു?

18. You observe him with each new day and try him at every moment!

19. നീ എത്രത്തോളം നിന്റെ നോട്ടം എങ്കല് നിന്നു മാറ്റാതിരിക്കും? ഞാന് ഉമിനീര് ഇറക്കുവോളം എന്നെ വിടാതെയുമിരിക്കും?

19. How long will it be before you look away from me, and let me alone long enough to swallow my spittle?

20. ഞാന് പാപം ചെയ്തുവെങ്കില്, മനുഷ്യപാലകനേ, ഞാന് നിനക്കെന്തു ചെയ്യുന്നു? ഞാന് എനിക്കു തന്നേ ഭാരമായിരിക്കത്തക്കവണ്ണം നീ എന്നെ നിനക്കു ലക്ഷ്യമായി വെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതെന്തു?

20. Though I have sinned, what can I do to you, O watcher of men?

21. എന്റെ അതിക്രമം നീ ക്ഷമിക്കാതെയും അകൃത്യം മോചിക്കാതെയും ഇരിക്കുന്നതെന്തു? ഇപ്പോള് ഞാന് പൊടിയില് കിടക്കും; നീ എന്നെ അന്വേഷിച്ചാല് ഞാന് ഇല്ലാതിരിക്കും.

21. Why do you not pardon my offense, or take away my guilt? For soon I shall lie down in the dust; and should you seek me I shall then be gone.
