1. ഞാന് എന്നോടു തന്നേ പറഞ്ഞുവരിക; ഞാന് നിന്നെ സന്തോഷംകൊണ്ടു പരീക്ഷിക്കും; സുഖം അനുഭവിച്ചുകൊള്ക.

1. I said to myself, 'Come on, let's try pleasure. Let's look for the 'good things' in life.' But I found that this, too, was meaningless.

2. എന്നാല് അതും മായ തന്നേ. ഞാന് ചിരിയെക്കുറിച്ചു അതു ഭ്രാന്തു എന്നും സന്തോഷത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു അതുകൊണ്ടെന്തു ഫലം എന്നും പറഞ്ഞു.

2. So I said, 'Laughter is silly. What good does it do to seek pleasure?'

3. മനുഷ്യര്ക്കും ആകാശത്തിന് കീഴെ ജീവപര്യന്തം ചെയ്വാന് നല്ലതു ഏതെന്നു ഞാന് കാണുവോളം എന്റെ ഹൃദയം എന്നെ ജ്ഞാനത്തോടെ നടത്തിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കെ, ഞാന് എന്റെ ദേഹത്തെ വീഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടു സന്തോഷിപ്പിപ്പാനും ഭോഷത്വം പിടിച്ചു കൊള്വാനും എന്റെ മനസ്സില് നിരൂപിച്ചു.

3. After much thought, I decided to cheer myself with wine. And while still seeking wisdom, I clutched at foolishness. In this way, I tried to experience the only happiness most people find during their brief life in this world.

4. ഞാന് മഹാപ്രവൃത്തികളെ ചെയ്തു; എനിക്കു അരമനകളെ പണിതു; മുന്തിരിത്തോട്ടങ്ങളെ ഉണ്ടാക്കി.

4. I also tried to find meaning by building huge homes for myself and by planting beautiful vineyards.

5. ഞാന് തോട്ടങ്ങളെയും ഉദ്യാനങ്ങളെയും ഉണ്ടാക്കി; അവയില് സകലവിധ ഫലവൃക്ഷങ്ങളെയും നട്ടു.

5. I made gardens and parks, filling them with all kinds of fruit trees.

6. വൃക്ഷം വെച്ചുപിടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന തോപ്പു നനെപ്പാന് കുളങ്ങളും കുഴിപ്പിച്ചു.

6. I built reservoirs to collect the water to irrigate my many flourishing groves.

7. ഞാന് ദാസന്മാരെയും ദാസിമാരെയും വിലെക്കു വാങ്ങി; വീട്ടില് ജനിച്ച ദാസന്മാരും എനിക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നു; യെരൂശലേമില് എനിക്കുമുമ്പു ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഏവരിലും അധികം ആടുമാടുകളായ ബഹുസമ്പത്തു എനിക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

7. I bought slaves, both men and women, and others were born into my household. I also owned large herds and flocks, more than any of the kings who had lived in Jerusalem before me.

8. ഞാന് വെള്ളിയും പൊന്നും രാജാക്കന്മാര്ക്കും സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്ക്കും ഉള്ള ഭണ്ഡാരവും സ്വരൂപിച്ചു; സംഗീതക്കാരെയും സംഗീതക്കാരത്തികളെയും മനുഷ്യരുടെ പ്രമോദമായ അനവധി സ്ത്രീജനത്തെയും സമ്പാദിച്ചു.

8. I collected great sums of silver and gold, the treasure of many kings and provinces. I hired wonderful singers, both men and women, and had many beautiful concubines. I had everything a man could desire!

9. ഇങ്ങനെ ഞാന് , എനിക്കുമുമ്പു യെരൂശലേമില് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എല്ലാവരിലും മഹാനായിത്തീര്ന്നു അഭിവൃദ്ധി പ്രാപിച്ചു; ജ്ഞാനവും എന്നില് ഉറെച്ചുനിന്നു.

9. So I became greater than all who had lived in Jerusalem before me, and my wisdom never failed me.

10. എന്റെ കണ്ണു ആഗ്രഹിച്ചതൊന്നും ഞാന് അതിന്നു നിഷേധിച്ചില്ല; എന്റെ ഹൃദയത്തിന്നു ഒരു സന്തോഷവും വിലക്കിയില്ല; എന്റെ സകലപ്രയത്നവും നിമിത്തം എന്റെ ഹൃദയം സന്തോഷിച്ചു; എന്റെ സകലപ്രയത്നത്തിലും എനിക്കുണ്ടായ അനുഭവം ഇതു തന്നേ.

10. Anything I wanted, I would take. I denied myself no pleasure. I even found great pleasure in hard work, a reward for all my labors.

11. ഞാന് എന്റെ കൈകളുടെ സകലപ്രവൃത്തികളെയും ഞാന് ചെയ്വാന് ശ്രമിച്ച സകലപരിശ്രമങ്ങളെയും നോക്കി; എല്ലാം മായയും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നവും അത്രേ; സൂര്യന്റെ കീഴില് യാതൊരു ലാഭവും ഇല്ല എന്നു കണ്ടു.

11. But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless-- like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.

12. ഞാന് ജ്ഞാനവും ഭ്രാന്തും ഭോഷത്വവും നോക്കുവാന് തിരിഞ്ഞു; രാജാവിന്റെ ശേഷം വരുന്ന മനുഷ്യന് എന്തു ചെയ്യും? പണ്ടു ചെയ്തതു തന്നേ.

12. So I decided to compare wisdom with foolishness and madness (for who can do this better than I, the king?).

13. വെളിച്ചം ഇരുളിനെക്കാള് ശ്രേഷ്ഠമായിരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ ജ്ഞാനം ഭോഷത്വത്തെക്കാള് ശ്രേഷ്ഠമായിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു ഞാന് കണ്ടു.

13. I thought, 'Wisdom is better than foolishness, just as light is better than darkness.

14. ജ്ഞാനിക്കു തലയില് കണ്ണുണ്ടു; ഭോഷന് ഇരുട്ടില് നടക്കുന്നു; എന്നാല് അവര്ക്കും എല്ലാവര്ക്കും ഗതി ഒന്നു തന്നേ എന്നു ഞാന് ഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

14. For the wise can see where they are going, but fools walk in the dark.' Yet I saw that the wise and the foolish share the same fate.

15. ആകയാല് ഞാന് എന്നോടുഭോഷന്നും എനിക്കും ഗതി ഒന്നു തന്നേ; പിന്നെ ഞാന് എന്തിന്നു അധികം ജ്ഞാനം സമ്പാദിക്കുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ഇതും മായയത്രേ എന്നു ഞാന് മനസ്സില് പറഞ്ഞു.

15. Both will die. So I said to myself, 'Since I will end up the same as the fool, what's the value of all my wisdom? This is all so meaningless!'

16. ഭോഷനെക്കുറിച്ചാകട്ടെ ജ്ഞാനിയെക്കുറിച്ചാകട്ടെ ശാശ്വതമായ ഔര്മ്മയില്ല; വരുംകാലത്തും അവരെ ഒക്കെയും മറന്നുപോകും; അയ്യോ ഭോഷന് മരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ ജ്ഞാനിയും മരിക്കുന്നു;

16. For the wise and the foolish both die. The wise will not be remembered any longer than the fool. In the days to come, both will be forgotten.

17. അങ്ങനെ സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ നടക്കുന്ന കാര്യം എനിക്കു അനിഷ്ടമായതുകൊണ്ടു ഞാന് ജീവനെ വെറുത്തു; എല്ലാം മായയും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നവും അത്രേ.

17. So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless-- like chasing the wind.

18. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ ഞാന് പ്രയത്നിച്ച പ്രയത്നം ഒക്കെയും ഞാന് വെറുത്തു; എന്റെ ശേഷം വരുവാനിരിക്കുന്ന മനുഷ്യന്നു ഞാന് അതു വെച്ചേക്കേണ്ടിവരുമല്ലോ.

18. I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned.

19. അവന് ജ്ഞാനിയായിരിക്കുമോ ഭോഷനായിരിക്കുമോ? ആര്ക്കറിയാം? എന്തായാലും ഞാന് സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ പ്രയത്നിച്ചതും ജ്ഞാനം വിളങ്ങിച്ചതും ആയ സകലപ്രയത്നഫലത്തിന്മേലും അവന് അധികാരം പ്രാപിക്കും. അതും മായ അത്രേ.

19. And who can tell whether my successors will be wise or foolish? Yet they will control everything I have gained by my skill and hard work under the sun. How meaningless!

20. ആകയാല് സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ പ്രയത്നിച്ച സര്വ്വപ്രയത്നത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും ഞാന് എന്റെ ഹൃദയത്തെ നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തുവാന് തുടങ്ങി.

20. So I gave up in despair, questioning the value of all my hard work in this world.

21. ഒരുത്തന് ജ്ഞാനത്തോടും അറിവോടും സാമര്ത്ഥ്യത്തോടുംകൂടെ പ്രയത്നിക്കുന്നു; എങ്കിലും അതില് പ്രയത്നിക്കാത്ത ഒരുത്തന്നു അവന് അതിനെ അവകാശമായി വെച്ചേക്കേണ്ടിവരുന്നു; അതും മായയും വലിയ തിന്മയും അത്രേ.

21. Some people work wisely with knowledge and skill, then must leave the fruit of their efforts to someone who hasn't worked for it. This, too, is meaningless, a great tragedy.

22. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ പ്രയത്നിക്കുന്ന സകലപ്രയത്നംകൊണ്ടും ഹൃദയപരിശ്രമംകൊണ്ടും മനുഷ്യന്നു എന്തു ഫലം?

22. So what do people get in this life for all their hard work and anxiety?

23. അവന്റെ നാളുകള് ഒക്കെയും ദുഃഖകരവും അവന്റെ കഷ്ടപ്പാടു വ്യസനകരവും അല്ലോ; രാത്രിയിലും അവന്റെ ഹൃദയത്തിന്നു സ്വസ്ഥതയില്ല; അതും മായ അത്രേ.

23. Their days of labor are filled with pain and grief; even at night their minds cannot rest. It is all meaningless.

24. തിന്നു കുടിച്ചു തന്റെ പ്രയത്നത്താല് സുഖം അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതല്ലാതെ മനുഷ്യന്നു മറ്റൊരു നന്മയുമില്ല; അതും ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കയ്യില്നിന്നുള്ളതു എന്നു ഞാന് കണ്ടു.

24. So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God.

25. അവന് നല്കീട്ടല്ലാതെ ആര് ഭക്ഷിക്കും ആര് അനുഭവിക്കും?

25. For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him?

26. തനിക്കു പ്രസാദമുള്ള മനുഷ്യന്നു അവന് ജ്ഞാനവും അറിവും സന്തോഷവും കൊടുക്കുന്നു; പാപിക്കോ ദൈവം തനിക്കു പ്രസാദമുള്ളവന്നു അനുഭവമാകുവാന് തക്കവണ്ണം ധനം സമ്പാദിക്കയും സ്വരൂപിക്കയും ചെയ്വാനുള്ള കഷ്ടപ്പാടു കൊടുക്കുന്നു. അതും മായയും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നവും അത്രേ.

26. God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy to those who please him. But if a sinner becomes wealthy, God takes the wealth away and gives it to those who please him. This, too, is meaningless-- like chasing the wind.
