1. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ ഞാന് കണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു തിന്മ ഉണ്ടു; അതു മനുഷ്യര്ക്കും ഭാരമുള്ളതാകുന്നു.

1. There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it [is] great on man:

2. ദൈവം ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്നു ധനവും ഐശ്വര്യവും മാനവും നലകുന്നു; അവന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നതിന്നു ഒന്നിന്നും അവന്നു കുറവില്ല; എങ്കിലും അതു അനുഭവിപ്പാന് ദൈവം അവന്നു അധികാരം കൊടുക്കുന്നില്ല; ഒരു അന്യനത്രേ അതു അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതു; അതു മായയും വല്ലാത്ത വ്യാധിയും തന്നേ.

2. A man to whom God giveth wealth, and riches, and honour, and there is no lack to his soul of all that he desireth, and God giveth him not power to eat of it, but a stranger eateth it; this [is] vanity, and it [is] an evil disease.

3. ഒരു മനുഷ്യന് നൂറുമക്കളെ ജനിപ്പിക്കയും ഏറിയ സംവത്സരം ജീവിച്ചു ദീര്ഘായുസ്സായിരിക്കയും ചെയ്തിട്ടും അവന് നന്മ അനുഭവിച്ചു തൃപ്തനാകാതെയും ഒരു ശവസംസ്ക്കാരം പ്രാപിക്കാതെയും പോയാല് ഗര്ഭം അലസിപ്പോയ പിണ്ഡം അവനെക്കാള് നന്നു എന്നു ഞാന് പറയുന്നു.

3. If a man doth beget a hundred, and live many years, and is great, because they are the days of his years, and his soul is not satisfied from the goodness, and also he hath not had a grave, I have said, 'Better than he [is] the untimely birth.'

4. അതു മായയില് വരുന്നു; അന്ധകാരത്തിലേക്കു പോകുന്നു; അതിന്റെ പേര് അന്ധകാരത്തില് മറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.

4. For in vanity he came in, and in darkness he goeth, and in darkness his name is covered,

5. സൂര്യനെ അതു കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല അറിഞ്ഞിട്ടുമില്ല; മറ്റേവനെക്കാള് അധികം വിശ്രാമം അതിന്നുണ്ടു.

5. Even the sun he hath not seen nor known, more rest hath this than that.

6. അവന് ഈരായിരത്താണ്ടു ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നിട്ടും നന്മ അനുഭവിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില് എല്ലാവരും ഒരു സ്ഥലത്തേക്കല്ലയോ പോകുന്നതു?

6. And though he had lived a thousand years twice over, yet good he hath not seen; to the same place doth not every one go?

7. മനുഷ്യന്റെ പ്രയത്നമൊക്കെയും അവന്റെ വായക്കുവേണ്ടിയാകുന്നു; എങ്കിലും അവന്റെ കൊതിക്കു മതിവരുന്നില്ല.

7. All the labour of man [is] for his mouth, and yet the soul is not filled.

8. മൂഢനെക്കാള് ജ്ഞാനിക്കു എന്തു വിശേഷതയുള്ളു? പരിജ്ഞാനമുള്ള സാധുവിന്നു ജീവനുള്ളവരുടെ മുമ്പില് നടക്കുന്നതില് എന്തു വിശേഷതയുള്ളു?

8. For what advantage [is] to the wise above the fool? What to the poor who knoweth to walk before the living?

9. അഭിലാഷത്തിന്റെ സഞ്ചാരത്തെക്കാള് കണ്ണിന്റെ നോട്ടം നല്ലതു; അതും മായയും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നവും അത്രേ.

9. Better [is] the sight of the eyes than the going of the soul. This also [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.

10. ഒരുത്തന് എന്തു തന്നേ ആയിരുന്നാലും അവന്നു പണ്ടേ തന്നേ പേര് വിളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; മനുഷ്യന് എന്താകും എന്നു വിധിച്ചുമിരിക്കുന്നു; തന്നിലും ബലമേറിയവനോടു വാദിപ്പാന് അവന്നു കഴിവില്ല.

10. What [is] that which hath been? already is its name called, and it is known that it [is] man, and he is not able to contend with him who is stronger than he.

11. മായയെ വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വാക്കു പെരുക്കിയാലും മനുഷ്യന്നു എന്തു ലാഭം?

11. For there are many things multiplying vanity; what advantage [is] to man?

12. മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവിതകാലത്തു, അവന് നിഴല് പോലെ കഴിച്ചുകൂട്ടുന്ന വ്യര്ത്ഥമായുള്ള ആയുഷ്കാലത്തൊക്കെയും അവന്നു എന്താകുന്നു നല്ലതു എന്നു ആര്ക്കറിയാം? അവന്റെ ശേഷം സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ എന്തു സംഭവിക്കും എന്നു മനുഷ്യനോടു ആര് അറിയിക്കും?

12. For who knoweth what [is] good for a man in life, the number of the days of the life of his vanity, and he maketh them as a shadow? for who declareth to man what is after him under the sun?
