1. യോനെക്കു ഇതു അത്യന്തം അനിഷ്ടമായി, അവന്നു കോപം വന്നു.

1. But this made Jonah very unhappy, and he became angry.

2. അവന് യഹോവയോടു പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചുഅയ്യോ, യഹോവേ, ഞാന് എന്റെ ദേശത്തു ആയിരുന്നപ്പോള് ഞാന് പറഞ്ഞ വാക്കു ഇതു തന്നേ അല്ലയോ? അതുകൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു ഞാന് തര്ശീശിലേക്കു ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു ഔടിപ്പോയതു; നീ കൃപയും കരുണയും ദീര്ഘക്ഷമയും മഹാദയയുമുള്ള ദൈവമായി അനര്ത്ഥത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു അനുതപിക്കുന്നവന് എന്നു ഞാന് അറിഞ്ഞു.

2. He prayed to the Lord, 'When I was still in my own country this is what I said would happen, and that is why I quickly ran away to Tarshish. I knew that you are a God who is kind and shows mercy. You don't become angry quickly, and you have great love. I knew you would choose not to cause harm.

3. ആകയാല് യഹോവേ, എന്റെ പ്രാണനെ എടുത്തുകൊള്ളേണമേ; ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാള് മരിക്കുന്നതു എനിക്കു നന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. So now I ask you, Lord, please kill me. It is better for me to die than to live.'

4. നീ കോപിക്കുന്നതു വിഹിതമോ എന്നു യഹോവ ചോദിച്ചു.

4. Then the Lord said, 'Do you think it is right for you to be angry?'

5. അനന്തരം യോനാ നഗരം വിട്ടുചെന്നു നഗരത്തിന്റെ കിഴക്കേവശത്തു ഇരുന്നു; അവിടെ ഒരു കുടിലുണ്ടാക്കി നഗരത്തിന്നു എന്തു ഭവിക്കും എന്നു കാണുവോളം അതിന് കീഴെ തണലില് പാര്ത്തു.

5. Jonah went out and sat down east of the city. There he made a shelter for himself and sat in the shade, waiting to see what would happen to the city.

6. യോനയെ അവന്റെ സങ്കടത്തില്നിന്നു വിടുവിപ്പാന് തക്കവണ്ണം അവന്റെ തലെക്കു തണല് ആയിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു യഹോവയായ ദൈവം ഒരു ആവണകൂ കല്പിച്ചുണ്ടാക്കി, അതു അവന്നു മീതെ വളര്ന്നു പൊങ്ങി; യോനാ ആവണകൂനിമിത്തം അത്യന്തം സന്തോഷിച്ചു.

6. The Lord made a plant grow quickly up over Jonah, which gave him shade and helped him to be more comfortable. Jonah was very pleased to have the plant.

7. പിറ്റെന്നാള് പുലര്ന്നപ്പോള് ദൈവം ഒരു പുഴുവിനെ കല്പിച്ചാക്കി; അതു ആവണകൂ കുത്തിക്കളഞ്ഞു, അതു വാടിപ്പോയി.

7. But the next day when the sun rose, God sent a worm to attack the plant so that it died.

8. സൂര്യന് ഉദിച്ചപ്പോള് ദൈവം അത്യഷ്ണമുള്ളോരു കിഴക്കന് കാറ്റു കല്പിച്ചുവരുത്തി; വെയില് യോനയുടെ തലയില് കൊള്ളുകയാല് അവന് ക്ഷീണിച്ചു മരിച്ചാല് കൊള്ളാം എന്നു ഇച്ഛിച്ചുജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാല് മരിക്കുന്നതു എനിക്കു നന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. As the sun rose higher in the sky, God sent a very hot east wind to blow, and the sun became so hot on Jonah's head that he became very weak and wished he were dead. He said, 'It is better for me to die than to live.'

9. ദൈവം യോനയോടുനീ ആവണകൂനിമിത്തം കോപിക്കുന്നതു വിഹിതമോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നു അവന് ഞാന് മരണപര്യന്തം കോപിക്കുന്നതു വിഹിതം തന്നേ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

9. But God said to Jonah, 'Do you think it is right for you to be angry about the plant?' Jonah answered, 'It is right for me to be angry! I am so angry I could die!'

10. അതിന്നു യഹേഅവ നീ അദ്ധ്വനിക്കയോ വളര്ത്തുകയൊ ചെയ്യാതെ ഒരു രാത്രിയില് ഉണ്ടായ്വരികയും ഒരു രാത്രിയില് നശിച്ചുപോകയും ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്ന ആവണക്കിനെക്കുറിച്ചു നിനക്കു അയ്യോഭാവം തോന്നുന്നുവല്ലോ.

10. And the Lord said, 'You are so concerned for that plant even though you did nothing to make it grow. It appeared one day, and the next day it died.

11. എന്നാല് വലങ്കയ്യും ഇടങ്കയ്യും തമ്മില് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞുകൂടാത്ത ഒരു ല്കഷത്തിരുപതിനായിരത്തില് ചില്വാനം മനുഷ്യരും അനേകം മൃഗങ്ങളുമുള്ള മഹാനഗരമായ നീനെവേയോടു എനിക്കു അയ്യോഭാവം തോന്നരുതോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

11. Then shouldn't I show concern for the great city Nineveh, which has more than one hundred twenty thousand people who do not know right from wrong, and many animals, too?'
