1. ശൌല് രാജാവായപ്പോള് (മുപ്പതു) വയസ്സുള്ളവനായിരുന്നു; അവന് യിസ്രായേലില് രണ്ടു സംവത്സരം വാണു.

1. Saul was... years old when he began to reign; and he reigned... and two years over Israel.

2. ശൌല് യിസ്രായേലില് മൂവായിരം പേരെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു; രണ്ടായിരംപേര് ശൌലിനോടുകൂടെ മിക്മാസിലും ബേഥേല്മലയിലും ആയിരം പേര് യോനാഥാനോടുകൂടെ ബെന്യാമീനിലെ ഗിബെയയിലും ആയിരുന്നു; ശേഷം ജനത്തെ അവന് അവനവന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു.

2. Saul chose three thousand out of Israel; two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; the rest of the people he sent home to their tents.

3. പിന്നെ യോനാഥാന് ഗേബയില് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഫെലിസ്ത്യപ്പട്ടാളത്തെ തോല്പിച്ചു; ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് അതു കേട്ടു. എബ്രായര് കേള്ക്കട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു ശൌല് ദേശത്തെല്ലാടവും കാഹളം ഊതിച്ചു.

3. Jonathan defeated the garrison of the Philistines that was at Geba; and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear!

4. ശൌല് ഫെലിസ്ത്യപ്പട്ടാളത്തെ തോല്പിച്ചു എന്നും യിസ്രായേല് ഫെലിസ്ത്യര്ക്കും നാറ്റമായി എന്നും യിസ്രായേലൊക്കെയും കേട്ടിട്ടു ജനം ശൌലിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ഗില്ഗാലില് വന്നു കൂടി.

4. When all Israel heard that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become odious to the Philistines, the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.

5. എന്നാല് ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് യിസ്രായേലിനോടു യുദ്ധം ചെയ്വാന് മുപ്പതിനായിരം രഥവും ആറായിരം കുതിരച്ചേവകരും കടല്പുറത്തെ മണല്പോലെ അസംഖ്യം ജനവുമായി ഒരുമിച്ചുകൂടി; അവര് വന്നു ബേത്ത്-ആവെന്നു കിഴക്കു മിക്മാസില് പാളയം ഇറങ്ങി.

5. The Philistines mustered to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and troops like the sand on the seashore in multitude; they came up and encamped at Michmash, to the east of Beth-aven.

6. എന്നാല് ജനം ഉപദ്രവിക്കപ്പെട്ടതുകൊണ്ടു തങ്ങള് വിഷമത്തിലായി എന്നു യിസ്രായേല്യര് കണ്ടപ്പോള് ജനം ഗുഹകളിലും പള്ളക്കാടുകളിലും പാറകളിലും ഗഹ്വരങ്ങളിലും കുഴികളിലും ചെന്നു ഒളിച്ചു.

6. When the Israelites saw that they were in distress (for the troops were hard pressed), the people hid themselves in caves and in holes and in rocks and in tombs and in cisterns.

7. എബ്രായര് യോര്ദ്ദാന് കടന്നു ഗാദ് ദേശത്തും ഗിലെയാദിലും പോയി; ശൌലോ ഗില്ഗാലില് താമസിച്ചിരുന്നു; ജനമെല്ലാം പേടിച്ചുംകൊണ്ടു അവന്റെ പിന്നാലെ ചെന്നു.

7. Some Hebrews crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

8. ശമൂവേല് നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരുന്ന അവധിഅനുസരിച്ചു അവന് ഏഴു ദിവസം കാത്തിരുന്നു എങ്കിലും ശമൂവേല് ഗില്ഗാലില് എത്തിയില്ല; ജനവും അവനെ വിട്ടു ചിതറിപ്പോയി.

8. He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people began to slip away from Saul.

9. അപ്പോള് ശൌല്ഹോമയാഗവും സമാധാനയാഗവും ഇവിടെ എന്റെ അടുക്കല് കൊണ്ടുവരുവിന് എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു; അവന് തന്നേ ഹോമയാഗം കഴിച്ചു.

9. So Saul said, Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the offerings of well-being. And he offered the burnt offering.

10. ഹോമയാഗം കഴിച്ചു തീര്ന്ന ഉടനെ ഇതാ, ശമൂവേല് വരുന്നു; ശൌല് അവനെ വന്ദനം ചെയ്വാന് എതിരേറ്റുചെന്നു.

10. As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, Samuel arrived; and Saul went out to meet him and salute him.

11. നീ ചെയ്തതു എന്തു എന്നു ശമൂവേല് ചോദിച്ചു. അതിന്നു ശൌല്ജനം എന്നെ വിട്ടു ചിതറുന്നു എന്നും നിശ്ചയിച്ച അവധിക്കു നീ എത്തിയില്ല എന്നും ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് മിക്മാസില് കൂടിയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നും ഞാന് കണ്ടിട്ടു

11. Samuel said, What have you done? Saul replied, When I saw that the people were slipping away from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines were mustering at Michmash,

12. ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് ഇപ്പോള് ഇങ്ങു ഗില്ഗാലില് വന്നു എന്നെ ആക്രമിക്കും; ഞാന് യഹോവയോടു കൃപെക്കായി അപേക്ഷിച്ചതുമില്ലല്ലോ എന്നുവെച്ചു ഞാന് ധൈര്യപ്പെട്ടു ഹോമയാഗം കഴിച്ചുപോയി എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

12. I said, 'Now the Philistines will come down upon me at Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favor of the LORD'; so I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering.

13. ശമൂവേല് ശൌലിനോടു പറഞ്ഞതുനീ ചെയ്തതു ഭോഷത്വം; നിന്റെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ നിന്നോടു കല്പിച്ച കല്പന നീ പ്രമാണിച്ചില്ല; യഹോവ യിസ്രായേലിന്മേല് നിന്റെ രാജത്വം എന്നേക്കുമായി സ്ഥിരമാക്കുമായിരുന്നു.

13. Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you. The LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever,

14. ഇപ്പോഴോ നിന്റെ രാജത്വം നിലനില്ക്കയില്ല; യഹോവ നിന്നോടു കല്പിച്ചതിനെ നീ പ്രമാണിക്കായ്കകൊണ്ടു തനിക്കു ബോധിച്ച ഒരു പുരുഷനെ യഹോവ അന്വേഷിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടു; അവനെ യഹോവ തന്റെ ജനത്തിന്നു പ്രഭുവായി നിയമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

14. but now your kingdom will not continue; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart; and the LORD has appointed him to be ruler over his people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.

15. പിന്നെ ശമൂവേല് എഴുന്നേറ്റു ഗില്ഗാലില്നിന്നു ബെന്യാമീനിലെ ഗിബെയയിലേക്കു പോയി. ശൌല് തന്നോടുകൂടെയുള്ള പടജ്ജനത്തെ എണ്ണി ഏകദേശം അറുനൂറു പേര് എന്നു കണ്ടു.

15. And Samuel left and went on his way from Gilgal. The rest of the people followed Saul to join the army; they went up from Gilgal toward Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul counted the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.

16. ശൌലും അവന്റെ മകന് യോനാഥാനും കൂടെയുള്ള ജനവും ബെന്യാമീനിലെ ഗിബെയയില് പാര്ത്തു; ഫെലിസ്ത്യരോ മിക്മാസില് പാളയമിറങ്ങി.

16. Saul, his son Jonathan, and the people who were present with them stayed in Geba of Benjamin; but the Philistines encamped at Michmash.

17. ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ പാളയത്തില്നിന്നു കവര്ച്ചക്കാര് മൂന്നു കൂട്ടമായി പുറപ്പെട്ടു; ഒരു കൂട്ടം ഒഫ്രെക്കുള്ള വഴിയായി ശൂവാല്ദേശത്തേക്കു തിരിഞ്ഞു;

17. And raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies; one company turned toward Ophrah, to the land of Shual,

18. മറ്റൊരുകൂട്ടം ബേത്ത്-ഹോരോനിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിക്കു തിരിഞ്ഞു; മറ്റേ കൂട്ടം മരുഭൂമിക്കു നേരേ സെബോയീംതാഴ്വരെക്കെതിരെയുള്ള ദേശം വഴിയായും തിരിഞ്ഞു.

18. another company turned toward Beth-horon, and another company turned toward the mountain that looks down upon the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

19. എന്നാല് യിസ്രായേല്ദേശത്തെങ്ങും ഒരു കൊല്ലനെ കാണ്മാനില്ലായിരുന്നു; എബ്രായര് വാളോ കുന്തമോ തീര്പ്പിക്കരുതു എന്നു ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് പറഞ്ഞു.

19. Now there was no smith to be found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, The Hebrews must not make swords or spears for themselves;

20. യിസ്രായേല്യര് തങ്ങളുടെ കൊഴു, കലപ്പ, മഴു, മണ്വെട്ടി എന്നിവ കാച്ചിപ്പാന് ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെല്ലേണ്ടിവന്നു.

20. so all the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen their plowshare, mattocks, axes, or sickles;

21. എന്നാല് മണ്വെട്ടി, കലപ്പ, മുപ്പല്ലി, മഴു എന്നിവെക്കായും മുടിങ്കോല് കൂര്പ്പിപ്പാനും അവര്ക്കും അരം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

21. The charge was two-thirds of a shekel for the plowshares and for the mattocks, and one-third of a shekel for sharpening the axes and for setting the goads.

22. ആകയാല് യുദ്ധസമയത്തു ശൌലിനോടും യോനാഥാനോടും കൂടെയുള്ള ജനത്തില് ഒരുത്തന്നും വാളും കുന്തവും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല; ശൌലിന്നും അവന്റെ മകന് യോനാഥാന്നും മാത്രമേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു.

22. So on the day of the battle neither sword nor spear was to be found in the possession of any of the people with Saul and Jonathan; but Saul and his son Jonathan had them.

23. ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ പട്ടാളമോ മിക്മാസിലെ ചുരംവരെ പുറപ്പെട്ടുവന്നു.

23. Now a garrison of the Philistines had gone out to the pass of Michmash.
