1. ദാവീദ് നോബില് പുരോഹിതനായ അഹീമേലെക്കിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു; അഹീമേലെക് ദാവീദിനെ സംഭ്രമത്തോടെ എതിരേറ്റു അവനോടുആരും കൂടെ ഇല്ലാതെ തനിച്ചുവരുന്നതു എന്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

1. And David came to Nobe to Achimelech the priest: and Achimelech was astonished at David's coming. And he said to him: Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?

2. ദാവീദ് പുരോഹിതനായ അഹീമേലെക്കിനോടുരാജാവു എന്നെ ഒരു കാര്യം ഏല്പിച്ചുഞാന് നിന്നെ അയക്കുന്നതും നിന്നോടു കല്പിക്കുന്നതുമായ കാര്യം ഒന്നും ആരും അറിയരുതു എന്നു കല്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. എന്റെ ബാല്യക്കാര് ഇന്ന സ്ഥലത്തു വരേണമെന്നു ഞാന് ചട്ടം കെട്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

2. And David said to Achimelech the priest: The king hath commanded me a business, and said: Let no man know the thing for which thou art sent by me, and what manner of commands I have given thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.

3. ആകയാല് നിന്റെ കൈവശം വല്ലതും ഉണ്ടോ? ഒരഞ്ചപ്പം അല്ലെങ്കില് തല്ക്കാലം കൈവശമുള്ളതെന്തെങ്കിലും എനിക്കു തരേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. Now therefore if thou have any thing at hand, though it were but five loaves, give me, or whatsoever thou canst find.

4. അതിന്നു പുരോഹിതന് ദാവീദിനോടുവിശുദ്ധമായ അപ്പം അല്ലാതെ സാമാന്യമായതു കൈവശം ഇല്ല; ബാല്യക്കാര് സ്ത്രീകളോടു അകന്നിരിക്കുന്നു എങ്കില് തരാമെന്നു ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞു.

4. And the priest answered David, saying: I have no common bread at hand, but only holy bread, if the young men be clean, especially from women?

5. ദാവീദ് പുരോഹിതനോടുഈ മൂന്നു ദിവസമായി സ്ത്രീകള് ഞങ്ങളോടു അകന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇതു ഒരു സാമാന്യയാത്ര എങ്കിലും ഞാന് പുറപ്പെടുമ്പേള് തന്നേ ബാല്യക്കാരുടെ യാത്രക്കോപ്പുകള് ശുദ്ധമായിരുന്നു; ഇന്നോ അവരുടെ കോപ്പുകള് എത്ര അധികം ശുദ്ധമായിരിക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

5. And David answered the priest, and said to him: Truly, as to what concerneth women, we have refrained ourselves from yesterday and the day before, when we came out, and the vessels of the young men were holy. Now this way is defiled, but it shall also be sanctified this day in the vessels.

6. അങ്ങനെ പുരോഹിതന് അവന്നു വിശുദ്ധമായ അപ്പം കൊടുത്തു; അപ്പം മാറ്റുന്ന ദിവസം ചൂടുള്ള അപ്പം വെക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില് നിന്നു നീക്കിയ കാഴ്ചയപ്പം അല്ലാതെ അവിടെ വേറെ അപ്പം ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു.

6. The priest therefore gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there, but only the loaves of proposition, which had been taken away from before the face of the Lord, that hot loaves might be set up.

7. എന്നാല് അന്നു ശൌലിന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാരില് ദോവേഗ് എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു എദോമ്യനെ അവിടെ യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില് അടെച്ചിട്ടിരുന്നു; അവന് ശൌലിന്റെ ഇടയന്മാര്ക്കും പ്രമാണി ആയിരുന്നു.

7. Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, within the tabernacle of the Lord: and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of Saul's herdsmen.

8. ദാവീദ് അഹീമേലെക്കിനോടുഇവിടെ നിന്റെ കൈവശം കുന്തമോ വാളോ ഉണ്ടോ? രാജാവിന്റെ കാര്യം തിടുക്കമായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു ഞാന് എന്റെ വാളും ആയുധങ്ങളും കൊണ്ടുപോന്നില്ല, എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. And David said to Achimelech: Hast thou here at hand a spear, or a sword? for I brought not my own sword, nor my own weapons with me, for the king's business required haste.

9. അപ്പോള് പുരോഹിതന് ഏലാ താഴ്വരയില്വെച്ചു നീ കൊന്ന ഫെലിസ്ത്യനായ ഗൊല്യാത്തിന്റെ വാള് ഏഫോദിന്റെ പുറകില് ഒരു ശീലയില് പൊതിഞ്ഞു വെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; അതു വേണമെങ്കില് എടുത്തുകൊള്ക; അതല്ലാതെ വേറെ ഒന്നുമില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അതിന്നു തുല്യം മറ്റൊന്നുമില്ല; അതു എനിക്കു തരേണം എന്നു ദാവീദ് പറഞ്ഞു.

9. And the priest said: Lo, here is the sword of Goliath the Philistine whom thou slewest in the valley of Terebinth, wrapped up in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take this, take it, for here is no other but this. And David said: There is none like that, give it me.

10. പിന്നെ ദാവീദ് പുറപ്പെട്ടു അന്നു തന്നേ ശൌലിന്റെ നിമിത്തം ഗത്ത്രാജാവായ ആഖീശിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ഔടിച്ചെന്നു.

10. And David arose and fled that day from the face of Saul: and came to Achis the king of Geth:

11. എന്നാല് ആഖീശിന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാര് അവനോടുഇവന് ദേശത്തിലെ രാജാവായ ദാവീദ് അല്ലയോ? ശൌല് ആയിരത്തെ കൊന്നു ദാവീദോ പതിനായിരത്തെ എന്നു അവര് നൃത്തങ്ങളില് ഗാനപ്രതിഗാനം ചെയ്തതു ഇവനെക്കുറിച്ചല്ലയോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

11. And the servants of Achis, when they saw David, said to him: Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to him in their dances, saying: Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

12. ദാവീദ് ഈ വാക്കുകളെ മനസ്സിലാക്കീട്ടു ഗത്ത് രാജാവായ ആഖീശിനെ ഏറ്റവും ഭയപ്പെട്ടു.

12. But David laid up these words in his heart, and was exceedingly afraid at the face of Achis the king of Geth.

13. അവരുടെ മുമ്പാകെ തന്റെ പ്രകൃതി മാറ്റി, അവരുടെ കൈകളില് ഇരിക്കെ ബുദ്ധിഭ്രമം നടിച്ചു വാതിലിന്റെ കതകുകളില് വരെച്ചു താടിമേല് തുപ്പല് ഒലിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

13. And he changed his countenance before them, and slipt down between their hands: and he stumbled against the doors of the gate, and his spittle ran down upon his beard.

14. ആഖീശ് തന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാരോടുഈ മനുഷ്യന് ഭ്രാന്തന് എന്നു നിങ്ങള് കാണുന്നില്ലയോ? അവനെ എന്റെ അടുക്കല് കൊണ്ടുവന്നതു എന്തിന്നു?

14. And Achis said to his servants: You saw the man was mad: why have you brought him to me?

15. എന്റെ മുമ്പാകെ ഭ്രാന്തു കളിപ്പാന് ഇവനെ കൊണ്ടുവരേണ്ടതിന്നു എനിക്കു ഇവിടെ ഭ്രാന്തന്മാര് കുറവുണ്ടോ? എന്റെ അരമനയിലോ ഇവന് വരേണ്ടതു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

15. Have we need of madmen, that you have brought in this fellow, to play the madman in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?
