1. അതിന്റെ ശേഷം അമ്മോന്യരുടെ രാജാവായ നാഹാശ് മരിച്ചു; അവന്റെ മകന് അവന്നു പകരം രാജാവായി.

1. Now it came to pass that Naas the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned is his stead.

2. അപ്പോള് ദാവീദ്നാഹാശ് എനിക്കു ദയ കാണിച്ചതു കൊണ്ടു അവന്റെ മകനായ ഹാനൂന്നു ഞാനും ദയ കാണിക്കും എന്നു പറ്ഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ അവന്റെ അപ്പനെക്കുറിച്ചു അവനോടു ആശ്വാസവാക്കു പറവാന് ദാവീദ് ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചു. ദാവീദിന്റെ ദൂതന്മാര് അമ്മോന്യരുടെ ദേശത്തു ഹാനൂന്റെ അടുക്കല് അവനെ ആശ്വസിപ്പിപ്പാന് വന്നപ്പോള്

2. And David said: I will shew kindness to Hanon the son of Naas: for his father did a favour to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him upon the death of his father. But when they were come into the land of the children of Ammon, to comfort Hanon,

3. അമ്മോന്യ പ്രഭുക്കന്മാര് ഹാനൂനോടുദാവീദ് നിന്റെ അപ്പനെ ബഹുമാനിച്ചിട്ടാകുന്നു നിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ആശ്വസിപ്പിക്കുന്നവരെ അയച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതു എന്നു നിനക്കു തോന്നുന്നുവോ? ദേശത്തെ പരിശോധിപ്പാനും മുടിപ്പാനും ഒറ്റുനോക്കുവാനും അല്ലയോ അവന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാര് നിന്റെ അടുക്കല് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നതു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. The princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanon: Thou thinkest perhaps that David to do honour to thy father hath sent comforters to thee: and thou dost not take notice, that his servants are come to thee to consider, and search, and spy out thy land.

4. അപ്പോള് ഹാനൂന് ദാവീദിന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാരെ പിടിച്ചു ക്ഷൌരം ചെയ്യിച്ചു അവരുടെ അങ്കികളെ നടുവില് ആസനംവരെ മുറിച്ചുകളഞ്ഞു വിട്ടയച്ചു.

4. Wherefore Hanon shaved the heads and beards of the servants of David, and cut away their garments from the buttocks to the feet, and sent them away.

5. ചിലര് ചെന്നു ആ പുരുഷന്മാരുടെ വസ്തുത ദാവീദിനെ അറിയിച്ചു; അവര് ഏറ്റവും ലജ്ജിച്ചിരിക്കയാല് അവന് അവരെ എതിരേല്പാന് ആളയച്ചു; നിങ്ങളുടെ താടി വളരുന്നതുവരെ യെരീഹോവില് പാര്ത്തിട്ടു മടങ്ങിവരുവിന് എന്നു രാജാവു പറയിച്ചു.

5. And when they were gone, they sent word to David, who sent to meet them (for they had suffered a great affront) and ordered them to stay at Jericho till their beards grew and then to return.

6. തങ്ങള് ദാവീദിന്നു വെറുപ്പായി എന്നു അമ്മോന്യര് കണ്ടപ്പോള് ഹാനൂനും അമ്മോന്യരും മെസൊപൊതാമ്യയില്നിന്നും മയഖയോടു ചേര്ന്ന അരാമില്നിന്നും സോബയില്നിന്നും രഥങ്ങളെയും കുതിരപ്പടയാളികളെയും ആയിരം താലന്ത് വെള്ളി കൊടുത്തു കൂലിക്കു വാങ്ങി.

6. And when the children of Ammon saw that they had done an injury to David, Hanon and the rest of the people sent a thousand talents of silver, to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria Maacha, and out of Soba.

7. അവര് മുപ്പത്തീരായിരം രഥങ്ങളെയും മയഖാരാജാവിനെയും അവന്റെ പടജ്ജനത്തെയും കൂലിക്കു വാങ്ങി; അവര് വന്നു മെദേബെക്കു മുമ്പില് പാളയമിറങ്ങി; അമ്മോന്യരും അവരുടെ പട്ടണങ്ങളില്നിന്നു വന്നുകൂടി പടെക്കു പുറപ്പെട്ടു.

7. And they hired two and thirty thousand chariots, and the king of Maacha, with his people. And they came and camped over against Medaba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together out of their cities, and came to battle.

8. ദാവീദ് അതു കേട്ടപ്പോള് യോവാബിനെയും വീരന്മാരുടെ സകലസൈന്യത്തെയും അയച്ചു.

8. And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of valiant men:

9. അമ്മോന്യര് പുറപ്പെട്ടു പട്ടണത്തിന്റെ പടിവാതില്ക്കല് പടെക്കു അണിനിരന്നു; വന്ന രാജാക്കന്മാരോ തനിച്ചു വെളിന് പ്രദേശത്തായിരുന്നു.

9. And the children of Ammon came out and put their army in array before the gate of the city: and the kings, that were come to their aid, stood apart in the field.

10. തന്റെ മുമ്പിലും പിമ്പിലും പട നിരന്നിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു കണ്ടപ്പോള് യോവാബ് എല്ലായിസ്രായേല്വീരന്മാരില്നിന്നും ആളുകളെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു അരാമ്യര്ക്കെതിരെ അണിനിരത്തി.

10. Wherefore Joab understanding that the battle was set against him before and behind, chose out the bravest men of all Israel, and marched against the Syrians,

11. ശേഷം പടജ്ജനത്തെ അവന് തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ അബീശായിയെ ഏല്പിച്ചു; അവര് അമ്മോന്യര്ക്കെതിരെ അണിനിരന്നു.

11. And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abisai his brother, and they went against the children of Ammon.

12. പിന്നെ അവന് അരാമ്യര് എന്റെ നേരെ പ്രാബല്യം പ്രാപിച്ചാല് നീ എനിക്കു സഹായം ചെയ്യേണം; അമ്മോന്യര് നിന്റെ നേരെ പ്രാബല്യം പ്രാപിച്ചാല് ഞാന് നിനക്കു സഹായം ചെയ്യും.

12. And he said: If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, I will help thee.

13. ധൈര്യമായിരിക്ക; നാം നമ്മുടെ ജനത്തിന്നും നമ്മുടെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പട്ടണങ്ങള്ക്കും വേണ്ടി പുരുഷത്വം കാണിക്കുക; യഹോവയോ തനിക്കു ഇഷ്ടമായതു ചെയ്യുമാറാകട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

13. Be of good courage and let us behave ourselves manfully for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord will do that which is good in his sight.

14. പിന്നെ യോവാബും കൂടെയുള്ള ജനവും അരാമ്യരോടു പടെക്കു അടുത്തു; അവര് അവന്റെ മുമ്പില്നിന്നു ഔടി.

14. So Joab and the people that were with him, went against the Syrians to the battle: and he put them to flight.

15. അരാമ്യര് ഔടിപ്പോയി എന്നു കണ്ടപ്പോള് അമ്മോന്യരും അതുപോലെ അവന്റെ സഹോദരനായ അബീശായിയുടെ മുമ്പില്നിന്നു ഔടി, പട്ടണത്തില് കടന്നു; യോവാബ് യെരൂശലേമിലേക്കു പോന്നു.

15. And the children of Ammon seeing that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled from Abisai his brother, and went into the city: and Joab also returned to Jerusalem.

16. തങ്ങള് യിസ്രായേലിനോടു തോറ്റുപോയി എന്നു അരാമ്യര് കണ്ടപ്പോള് അവര് ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചു നദിക്കു അക്കരെയുള്ള അരാമ്യരെ വരുത്തി; ഹദദേസെരിന്റെ സേനാപതിയായ ശോഫക് അവരുടെ നായകനായിരുന്നു.

16. But the Syrians seeing that they had fallen before Israel, sent messengers, and brought to them the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Sophach, general of the army of Adarezer, was their leader.

17. അതു ദാവീദിന്നു അറിവു കിട്ടിയപ്പോള് അവന് എല്ലായിസ്രായേലിനെയും കൂട്ടി യോര്ദ്ദാന് കടന്നു അവര്ക്കെതിരെ ചെന്നു അവരുടെ നേരെ അണിനിരത്തി. ദാവീദ് അരാമ്യര്ക്കും നേരെ പടെക്കു അണിനിരത്തിയ ശേഷം അവര് അവനോടു പടയേറ്റു യുദ്ധം ചെയ്തു.

17. And it was told David, and he gathered together all Israel, and passed the Jordan, and came upon them, and put his army in array against them, and they fought with him.

18. എന്നാല് അരാമ്യര് യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ മുമ്പില്നിന്നു ഔടി; ദാവീദ് അരാമ്യരില് ഏഴായിരം തേരാളികളെയും നാല്പതിനായിരം കാലാളുകളെയും നിഗ്രഹിച്ചു; സേനാപതിയായ ശോഫക്കിനെയും കൊന്നുകളഞ്ഞു.

18. But the Syrian fled before Israel: and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and Sophach the general of the army.

19. ഹദദേസെരിന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാര് തങ്ങള് യിസ്രായേലിനോടു തോറ്റുപോയെന്നു കണ്ടിട്ടു ദാവീദിനോടു സന്ധിചെയ്തു അവന്നു കീഴടങ്ങി; അമ്മോന്യരെ സഹായിപ്പാന് അരാമ്യര് പിന്നെ തുനിഞ്ഞതുമില്ല.

19. And when the servants of Adarezer saw themselves overcome by Israel, they went over to David, and served him: and Syria would not help the children of Ammon any more.
