1. ഗിലെയാദ്യനായ യിഫ്താഹ് പരാക്രമശാലി എങ്കിലും വേശ്യാപുത്രന് ആയിരുന്നു; യിഫ്താഹിന്റെ ജനകനോ ഗിലെയാദ് ആയിരുന്നു.

1. Jephthah the Gileadite was one tough warrior. He was the son of a whore, but Gilead was his father.

2. ഗിലെയാദിന്റെ ഭാര്യയും അവന്നു പുത്രന്മാരെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ പുത്രന്മാര് വളര്ന്നശേഷം അവര് യിഫ്താഹിനോടുനീ ഞങ്ങളുടെ പിതൃഭവനത്തില് അവകാശം പ്രാപിക്കയില്ല; നീ പരസ്ത്രീയുടെ മകനല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവനെ നീക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞു.

2. Meanwhile Gilead's legal wife had given him other sons, and when they grew up, his wife's sons threw Jephthah out. They told him: 'You're not getting any of our family inheritance--you're the son of another woman.'

3. അങ്ങനെ യിഫ്താഹ് തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരെ വിട്ടു തോബ് ദേശത്തു ചെന്നു പാര്ത്തു; നിസ്സാരന്മാരായ ചിലര് യിഫ്താഹിനോടു ചേര്ന്നു അവനുമായി സഞ്ചരിച്ചു.

3. So Jephthah fled from his brothers and went to live in the land of Tob. Some riff-raff joined him and went around with him.

4. കുറെക്കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടു അമ്മോന്യര് യിസ്രായേലിനോടു യുദ്ധംചെയ്തു.

4. Some time passed. And then the Ammonites started fighting Israel.

5. അമ്മോന്യര് യിസ്രായേലിനോടു യുദ്ധം തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള് ഗിലെയാദിലെ മൂപ്പന്മാര് യിഫ്താഹിനെ തോബ് ദേശത്തുനിന്നു കൊണ്ടുവരുവാന് ചെന്നു.

5. With the Ammonites at war with them, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.

6. അവര് യിഫ്താഹിനോടുഅമ്മോന്യരോടു യുദ്ധം ചെയ്യേണ്ടതിന്നു നീ വന്നു ഞങ്ങളുടെ സേനാപതിയായിരിക്ക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

6. They said to Jephthah: 'Come. Be our general and we'll fight the Ammonites.'

7. യിഫ്താഹ് ഗിലെയാദ്യരോടുനിങ്ങള് എന്നെ പകെച്ചു പിതൃഭവനത്തില് നിന്നു നീക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞില്ലയോ? ഇപ്പോള് നിങ്ങള് കഷ്ടത്തില് ആയ സമയം എന്റെ അടുക്കല് എന്തിന്നു വരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

7. But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead: 'But you hate me. You kicked me out of my family home. So why are you coming to me now? Because you are in trouble. Right?'

8. ഗിലെയാദിലെ മൂപ്പന്മാര് യിഫ്താഹിനോടുനീ ഞങ്ങളോടുകൂടെ വന്നു അമ്മോന്യരോടു യുദ്ധംചെയ്കയും ഗിലെയാദിലെ സകല നിവാസികള്ക്കും തലവനായിരിക്കയും ചെയ്യേണ്ടതിന്നു ഞങ്ങള് ഇപ്പോള് നിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ഇങ്ങോട്ടു വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. The elders of Gilead replied, 'That's it exactly. We've come to you to get you to go with us and fight the Ammonites. You'll be the head of all of us, all the Gileadites.'

9. യിഫ്താഹ് ഗിലെയാദിലെ മൂപ്പന്മാരോടുഅമ്മോന്യരോടു യുദ്ധംചെയ്വാന് നിങ്ങള് എന്നെ കൊണ്ടുപോയിട്ടു യഹോവ അവരെ എന്റെ കയ്യില് ഏല്പിച്ചാല് നിങ്ങള് എന്നെ തലവനാക്കുമോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

9. Jephthah addressed the elders of Gilead, 'So if you bring me back home to fight the Ammonites and GOD gives them to me, I'll be your head--is that right?'

10. ഗിലെയാദിലെ മൂപ്പന്മാര് യിഫ്താഹിനോടുയഹോവ നമ്മുടെ മദ്ധ്യേ സാക്ഷി; നീ പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ ഞങ്ങള് ചെയ്യും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

10. They said, 'GOD is witness between us; whatever you say, we'll do.'

11. അങ്ങനെ യിഫ്താഹ് ഗിലെയാദിലെ മൂപ്പന്മാരോടുകൂടെ പോയി; ജനം അവനെ തലവനും സേനാപതിയുമാക്കി; യിഫ്താഹ് മിസ്പയില്വെച്ചു യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില് തന്റെ കാര്യമെല്ലാം പ്രസ്താവിച്ചു.

11. Jephthah went along with the elders of Gilead. The people made him their top man and general. And Jephthah repeated what he had said before GOD at Mizpah.

12. അനന്തരം യിഫ്താഹ് അമ്മോന്യരുടെ രാജാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചുനീ എന്നോടു യുദ്ധംചെയ്വാന് എന്റെ ദേശത്തു വരേണ്ടതിന്നു എന്നോടു നിനക്കെന്തു കാര്യം എന്നു പറയിച്ചു.

12. Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites with a message: 'What's going on here that you have come into my country picking a fight?'

13. അമ്മോന്യരുടെ രാജാവു യിഫ്താഹിന്റെ ദൂതന്മാരോടുയിസ്രായേല് മിസ്രയീമില്നിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടുവന്നപ്പോള് അവര് അര്ന്നോന് മുതല് യബ്ബോക്വരെയും യോര്ദ്ദാന് വരെയും ഉള്ള എന്റെ ദേശം അടക്കിയതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നേ; ഇപ്പോള് ആ ദേശങ്ങളെ സമാധാനത്തോടെ മടക്കിത്തരിക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

13. The king of the Ammonites told Jephthah's messengers: 'Because Israel took my land when they came up out of Egypt--from the Arnon all the way to the Jabbok and to the Jordan. Give it back peaceably and I'll go.'

14. യിഫ്താഹ് പിന്നെയും അമ്മോന്യരുടെ രാജാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചു,

14. Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites with the message:

15. അവനോടു പറയിച്ചതെന്തെന്നാല്യിഫ്താഹ് ഇപ്രകാരം പറയുന്നു;

15. 'Jephthah's word: Israel took no Moabite land and no Ammonite land.

16. യിസ്രായേല് മോവാബ് ദേശമോ അമ്മോന്യരുടെ ദേശമോ അടക്കീട്ടില്ല. യിസ്രായേല് മിസ്രയീമില്നിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടു മരുഭൂമിയില്കൂടി ചെങ്കടല്വരെ സഞ്ചരിച്ചു കാദേശില് എത്തി.

16. When they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the desert as far as the Red Sea, arriving at Kadesh.

17. യിസ്രായേല് എദോം രാജാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചുഞാന് നിന്റെ ദേശത്തുകൂടി കടന്നുപോകുവാന് അനുവാദം തരേണമെന്നു പറയിച്ചു എങ്കിലും എദോംരാജാവു കേട്ടില്ല; മോവാബ് രാജാവിന്റെ അടുക്കലും അവര് പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു, അവനും സമ്മതിച്ചില്ല; അങ്ങനെ യിസ്രായേല് കാദേശില് പാര്ത്തു.

17. There Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom saying, 'Let us pass through your land, please.' But the king of Edom wouldn't let them. Israel also requested permission from the king of Moab, but he wouldn't let them cross either. They were stopped in their tracks at Kadesh.

18. അവര് മരുഭൂമിയില്കൂടി സഞ്ചരിച്ചു എദോംദേശവും മോവാബ്ദേശവും ചുറ്റിച്ചെന്നു മോവാബ് ദേശത്തിന്റെ കിഴക്കു എത്തി അര്ന്നോന്നക്കരെ പാളയമിറങ്ങി; അര്ന്നോന് മോവാബിന്റെ അതിരായിരുന്നു. മോവാബിന്റെ അതിര്ക്കകത്തു അവര് കടന്നില്ല.

18. So they traveled across the desert and circled around the lands of Edom and Moab. They came out east of the land of Moab and set camp on the other side of the Arnon--they didn't set foot in Moabite territory, for Arnon was the Moabite border.

19. പിന്നെ യിസ്രായേല് ഹെശ്ബോനില് വാണിരുന്ന അമോര്യ്യരാജാവായ സീഹോന്റെ അടുക്കല് ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചുനിന്റെ ദേശത്തുകൂടി എന്റെ സ്ഥലത്തേക്കു കടന്നുപോകുവാന് അനുവാദം തരേണമെന്നു പറയിച്ചു.

19. Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites at Heshbon the capital. Israel asked, 'Let us pass, please, through your land on the way to our country.'

20. എങ്കിലും സീഹോന് യിസ്രായേല് തന്റെ ദേശത്തുകൂടി കടന്നുപോകുവാന് തക്കവണ്ണം അവരെ വിശ്വസിക്കാതെ തന്റെ ജനത്തെ ഒക്കെയും വിളിച്ചുകൂട്ടി, യഹസില് പാളയമിറങ്ങി യിസ്രായേലിനോടു പടയേറ്റു.

20. But Sihon didn't trust Israel to cut across his land; he got his entire army together, set up camp at Jahaz, and fought Israel.

21. യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ സീഹോനെയും അവന്റെ സകലജനത്തെയും യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ കയ്യില് ഏല്പിച്ചു; അവര് അവരെ തോല്പിച്ചു; ഇങ്ങനെ യിസ്രായേല് ആദേശനിവാസികളായ അമോര്യ്യരുടെ ദേശം ഒക്കെയും കൈവശമാക്കി.

21. But GOD, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his troops to Israel. Israel defeated them. Israel took all the Amorite land,

22. അര്ന്നോന് മുതല് യബ്ബോക്വരെയും മരുഭൂമിയില് യോര്ദ്ദാന് വരെയുമുള്ള അമോര്യ്യരുടെ ദേശം ഒക്കെയും അവര് പിടിച്ചടക്കി.

22. all Amorite land from Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.

23. യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ തന്റെ ജനമായ യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ മുമ്പില്നിന്നു അമോര്യ്യരെ നീക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞിരിക്കെ നീ അവരുടെ അവകാശം അടക്കുവാന് പോകുന്നുവോ?

23. It was GOD, the God of Israel, who pushed out the Amorites in favor of Israel; so who do you think you are to try to take it over?

24. നിന്റെ ദേവനായ കെമോശ് നിനക്കു അവകാശമായി തരുന്ന ദേശത്തെ നീ അടക്കി അനുഭവിക്കയില്ലയോ? അങ്ങനെ തന്നെ ഞങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ ഞങ്ങളുടെ മുമ്പില്നിന്നു നീക്കിക്കളയുന്നവരുടെ അവകാശം ഞങ്ങളും അടക്കി അനുഭവിക്കും.

24. Why don't you just be satisfied with what your god Chemosh gives you and we'll settle for what GOD, our God, gives us?

25. സിപ്പോരിന്റെ മകനായ ബാലാക് എന്ന മോവാബ് രാജാവിനെക്കാളും നീ യോഗ്യനോ? അവന് യിസ്രായേലിനോടു എപ്പോഴെങ്കിലും വാഗ്വാദം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടോ? എപ്പോഴെങ്കിലും അവരോടു യുദ്ധം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടോ?

25. Do you think you're going to come off better than Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab? Did he get anywhere in opposing Israel? Did he risk war?

26. യിസ്രായേല് ഹെശ്ബോനിലും അതിന്റെ പട്ടണങ്ങളിലും അരോവേരിലും അതിന്റെ പട്ടണങ്ങളിലും അര്ന്നോന് തീരത്തുള്ള എല്ലാപട്ടണങ്ങളിലും മുന്നൂറു സംവത്സരത്തോളം പാര്ത്തിരിക്കെ ആ കാലത്തിന്നിടയില് നിങ്ങള് അവയെ ഒഴിപ്പിക്കാതിരുന്നതു എന്തു?

26. All this time--it's been three hundred years now!--that Israel has lived in Heshbon and its villages, in Aroer and its villages, and in all the towns along the Arnon, why didn't you try to snatch them away then?

27. ആകയാല് ഞാന് നിന്നോടു അന്യായം ചെയ്തിട്ടില്ല; എന്നോടു യുദ്ധം ചെയ്യുന്നതിനാല് നീ എന്നോടാകുന്നു അന്യായം ചെയ്യുന്നതു; ന്യായാധിപനായ യഹോവ ഇന്നു യിസ്രായേല്മക്കളുടെയും അമ്മോന്യരുടെയും മദ്ധ്യേ ന്യായം വിധിക്കട്ടെ.

27. No, I haven't wronged you. But this is an evil thing that you are doing to me by starting a fight. Today GOD the Judge will decide between the People of Israel and the people of Ammon.'

28. എന്നാല് യിഫ്താഹ് പറഞ്ഞയച്ച വാക്കു അമ്മോന്യരുടെ രാജാവു കൂട്ടാക്കിയില്ല.

28. But the king of the Ammonites refused to listen to a word that Jephthah had sent him.

29. അപ്പോള് യഹോവയുടെ ആത്മാവു യിഫ്താഹിന് മേല് വന്നു; അവന് ഗിലെയാദിലും മനശ്ശെയിലും കൂടി കടന്നു ഗിലെയാദിലെ മിസ്പയില് എത്തി ഗിലെയാദിലെ മിസ്പയില്നിന്നു അമ്മോന്യരുടെ നേരെ ചെന്നു.

29. GOD's Spirit came upon Jephthah. He went across Gilead and Manasseh, went through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there approached the Ammonites.

30. യിഫ്താഹ് യഹോവേക്കു ഒരു നേര്ച്ച നേര്ന്നു പറഞ്ഞതുനീ അമ്മോന്യരെ എന്റെ കയ്യില് ഏല്പിക്കുമെങ്കില്

30. Jephthah made a vow before GOD: 'If you give me a clear victory over the Ammonites,

31. ഞാന് അമ്മോന്യരെ ജയിച്ചു സമാധാനത്തോടെ മടങ്ങിവരുമ്പോള് എന്റെ വീട്ടുവാതില്ക്കല്നിന്നു എന്നെ എതിരേറ്റുവരുന്നതു യഹോവേക്കുള്ളതാകും; അതു ഞാന് ഹോമയാഗമായി അര്പ്പിക്കും.

31. then I'll give to GOD whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in one piece from among the Ammonites--I'll offer it up in a sacrificial burnt offering.'

32. ഇങ്ങനെ യിഫ്താഹ് അമ്മോന്യരോടു യുദ്ധംചെയ്വാന് അവരുടെ നേരെ ചെന്നു; യഹോവ അവരെ അവന്റെ കയ്യില് ഏല്പിച്ചു.

32. Then Jephthah was off to fight the Ammonites. And GOD gave them to him.

33. അവന് അവര്ക്കും അരോവേര്മുതല് മിന്നീത്ത്വരെയും ആബേല്-കെരാമീംവരെയും ഒരു മഹാസംഹാരം വരുത്തി, ഇരുപതു പട്ടണം ജയിച്ചടക്കി.

33. He beat them soundly, all the way from Aroer to the area around Minnith as far as Abel Keramim--twenty cities! A massacre! Ammonites brought to their knees by the People of Israel.

34. എന്നാല് യിഫ്താഹ് മിസ്പയില് തന്റെ വീട്ടിലകൂ ചെല്ലുമ്പോള് ഇതാ, അവന്റെ മകള് തപ്പോടും നൃത്തത്തോടുംകൂടെ അവനെ എതിരേറ്റുവരുന്നു; അവള് അവന്നു ഏകപുത്രി ആയിരുന്നു; അവളല്ലാതെ അവന്നു മകനുമില്ല മകളുമില്ല.

34. Jephthah came home to Mizpah. His daughter ran from the house to welcome him home--dancing to tambourines! She was his only child. He had no son or daughter except her.

35. When he realized who it was, he ripped his clothes, saying, 'Ah, dearest daughter--I'm dirt. I'm despicable. My heart is torn to shreds. I made a vow to GOD and I can't take it back!'

36. അവള് അവനോടുഅപ്പാ, നീ യഹോവയോടു പറഞ്ഞുപോയിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കില് യഹോവ നിനക്കുവേണ്ടി നിന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളായ അമ്മോന്യരോടു പ്രതികാരം നടത്തിയിരിക്കയാല് നിന്റെ വായില്നിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടതുപോലെ എന്നോടു ചെയ്ക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

36. She said, 'Dear father, if you made a vow to GOD, do to me what you vowed; GOD did his part and saved you from your Ammonite enemies.'

37. എന്നാല് ഒരു കാര്യം എനിക്കു വേണ്ടിയിരുന്നു; ഞാന് പര്വ്വതങ്ങളില് ചെന്നു എന്റെ സഖിമാരുമായി എന്റെ കന്യാത്വത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു വിലാപം കഴിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു എനിക്കു രണ്ടു മാസത്തെ അവധി തരേണം എന്നു അവള് തന്റെ അപ്പനോടു പറഞ്ഞു.

37. And then she said to her father, 'But let this one thing be done for me. Give me two months to wander through the hills and lament my virginity since I will never marry, I and my dear friends.'

38. അതിന്നു അവന് പോക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവളെ രണ്ടു മാസത്തേക്കു അയച്ചു; അവള് തന്റെ സഖിമാരുമായി ചെന്നു തന്റെ കന്യാത്വത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു പര്വ്വതങ്ങളില് വിലാപംകഴിച്ചു.

38. 'Oh yes, go,' he said. He sent her off for two months. She and her dear girlfriends went among the hills, lamenting that she would never marry.

39. രണ്ടു മാസം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടു അവള് തന്റെ അപ്പന്റെ അടുക്കലേക്കു മടങ്ങിവന്നു; അവന് നേര്ന്നിരുന്ന നേര്ച്ചപോലെ അവളോടു ചെയ്തു; അവള് ഒരു പുരുഷനെ അറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നതുമില്ല.

39. At the end of the two months, she came back to her father. He fulfilled the vow with her that he had made. She had never slept with a man. It became a custom in Israel

40. പിന്നെ ആണ്ടുതോറും യിസ്രായേലിലെ കന്യകമാര് നാലു ദിവസം ഗിലെയാദ്യനായ യിഫ്താഹിന്റെ മകളെ കീര്ത്തിപ്പാന് പോകുന്നതു യിസ്രായേലില് ഒരു ആചാരമായ്തീര്ന്നു.

40. that for four days every year the young women of Israel went out to mourn for the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
