1. ദാവീദ് രാമയിലെ നയ്യോത്തില്നിന്നു ഔടി യോനാഥാന്റെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നുഞാന് എന്തു ചെയ്തു? എന്റെ കുറ്റം എന്തു? നിന്റെ അപ്പന് എന്നെ കൊല്ലുവാന് അന്വേഷിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവനോടു ഞാന് ചെയ്ത പാപം എന്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

1. But David fled from Najoth, which is in Ramatha, and came and said to Jonathan: What have I done? what is my iniquity, and what is my sin against thy father, that he seeketh my life?

2. അവന് അവനോടുഅങ്ങനെ ഭവിക്കരുതേ, നീ മരിക്കയില്ല; എന്റെ അപ്പന് എന്നെ അറിയിക്കാതെ വലുതോ ചെറുതോ യാതൊന്നും ചെയ്വാറില്ല; പിന്നെ ഈ കാര്യം എന്നെ മറെപ്പാന് സംഗതി എന്തു? അങ്ങനെ വരികയില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

2. And he said to him: God forbid, thou shalt not die: for my father will do nothing great or little, without first telling me: hath then my father hid this word only from me? no, this shall not be.

3. ദാവീദ് പിന്നെയും അവനോടുഎന്നോടു നിനക്കു പ്രിയമാകുന്നുവെന്നു നിന്റെ അപ്പന് നല്ലവണ്ണം അറികയാല് യോനാഥാന് ദുഃഖിക്കാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവന് ഇതു ഗ്രഹിക്കരുതു എന്നു അവന് വിചാരിക്കുന്നു; എന്നാല് യഹോവയാണ, നിന്നാണ, എനിക്കും മരണത്തിന്നും മദ്ധ്യേ ഒരടി അകലം മാത്രമേയുള്ളു എന്നു സത്യംചെയ്തു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. And he swore again to David. And David said: Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, and he will say: Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved. But truly as the Lord liveth, and thy soul liveth, there is but one step (as I may say) between me and death.

4. അപ്പോള് യോനാഥാന് ദാവീദിനോടുനിന്റെ ആഗ്രഹം എന്തു? ഞാന് അതു ചെയ്തുതരും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

4. And Jonathan said to David: Whatsoever thy soul shall say to me, I will do for thee.

5. ദാവീദ് യോനാഥാനോടു പറഞ്ഞതുനാളെ അമാവാസ്യയാകുന്നു; ഞാനും രാജാവിനോടുകൂടെ പന്തിഭോജനത്തിന്നു ഇരിക്കേണ്ടതല്ലോ; എങ്കിലും മറ്റെന്നാള് വൈകുന്നേരംവരെ വയലില് ഒളിച്ചിരിപ്പാന് എനിക്കു അനുവാദം തരേണം.

5. And David said to Jonathan: Behold tomorrow is the new moon, and I according to custom am wont to sit beside the king to eat: let me go then that I may be hid in the field till the evening of the third day.

6. നിന്റെ അപ്പന് എന്നെ കാണാഞ്ഞിട്ടു അന്വേഷിച്ചാല്ദാവീദ് സ്വന്തപട്ടണമായ ബേത്ത്ളേഹെമിലേക്കു ഒന്നു പോയിവരേണ്ടതിന്നു എന്നോടു താല്പര്യമായി അനുവാദം ചോദിച്ചു; അവന്റെ കുലത്തിന്നെല്ലാം അവിടെ വര്ഷാന്തരയാഗം ഉണ്ടു എന്നു ബോധിപ്പിക്കേണം.

6. If thy father look and inquire for me, thou shalt answer him: David asked me that he might run to Bethlehem his own city: because there are solemn sacrifices there for all his tribe.

7. കൊള്ളാമെന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞാല് അടിയന്നു ശുഭം; അല്ല, കോപിച്ചാല്അവന് ദോഷം നിര്ണ്ണയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു അറിഞ്ഞുകൊള്ളേണം.

7. If he shall say, It is well: thy servant shall have peace: but if he be angry, know that his malice is come to its height.

8. എന്നാല് അങ്ങുന്നു അടിയനോടു ദയ ചെയ്യേണം; അടിയനുമായി യഹോവയെ സാക്ഷിയാക്കി സഖ്യത ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടല്ലോ; വല്ല കുറ്റവും എന്നില് ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലോ അങ്ങുന്നു തന്നേ എന്നെ കൊല്ലുക; അപ്പന്റെ അടുക്കല് എന്നെ കൊണ്ടുപോകുവാന് എന്തൊരാവശ്യം?

8. Deal mercifully then with thy servant: for thou hast brought me thy servant into a covenant of the Lord with thee. But if there be any iniquity in me, do thou kill me, and bring me not in to thy father.

9. അതിന്നു യോനാഥാന് അങ്ങനെ നിനക്കു വരാതിരിക്കട്ടെ; എന്റെ അപ്പന് നിനക്കു ദോഷം വരുത്തുവാന് നിര്ണ്ണയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു ഞാന് അറിഞ്ഞാല് നിന്നെ അറിയിക്കാതിരിക്കുമോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

9. And Jonathan said: Far be this from thee: for if I should certainly know that evil is determined by my father against thee, I could do no otherwise than tell thee.

10. ദാവീദ് യോനാഥാനോടുനിന്റെ അപ്പന് നിന്നോടു കഠിനമായി ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞാലോ അതു ആര് എന്നെ അറിയിക്കും എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

10. And David answered Jonathan: Who shall bring me word, if thy father should answer thee harshly concerning me?

11. യോനാഥാന് ദാവീദിനോടുവരിക, നമുക്കു വയലിലേക്കു പോകാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അവര് ഇരുവരും വയലിലേക്കു പോയി.

11. And Jonathan said to David: Come and let us go out into the field. And when they were both of them gone out into the field,

12. പിന്നെ യോനാഥാന് ദാവീദിനോടു പറഞ്ഞതുയിസ്രായേലിന്റെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ സാക്ഷിനാളെ ഈ നേരത്തോ മറ്റെന്നാളോ എന്റെ അപ്പന്റെ അന്തര്ഗ്ഗതമറിഞ്ഞു നിനക്കു ഗുണമെന്നു കണ്ടാല് ഞാന് ആളയച്ചു നിന്നെ അറിയിക്കാതിരിക്കുമോ?

12. Jonathan said to David: O Lord God of Israel, if I shall discover my father's mind, tomorrow or the day after, and there be any thing good for David, and I send not immediately to thee, and make it known to thee,

13. എന്നാല് നിന്നോടു ദോഷം ചെയ്വാനാകുന്നു എന്റെ അപ്പന്റെ ഭാവമെങ്കില് ഞാന് അതു നിന്നെ അറിയിച്ചു നീ സമാധാനത്തോടെ പോകേണ്ടതിന്നു നിന്നെ പറഞ്ഞയക്കാതിരുന്നാല് യഹോവ യോനാഥാനോടു തക്കവണ്ണവും അധികവും ചെയ്യട്ടെ; യഹോവ എന്റെ അപ്പനോടുകൂടെ ഇരുന്നതുപോലെ നിന്നോടു കൂടെയും ഇരിക്കുമാറാകട്ടെ.

13. May the Lord do so and so to Jonathan and add still more. But if my father shall continue in malice against thee, I will discover it to thy ear, and will send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace, and the Lord be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

14. ഞാന് ഇനി ജീവനോടിരിക്കയാകുന്നു എങ്കില് ഞാന് മരിക്കാതവണ്ണം യഹോവയുടെ ദയ നീ കാണിക്കേണ്ടതു എന്നോടു മാത്രമല്ല;

14. And if I live, thou shalt shew me the kindness of the Lord: but if I die,

15. എന്റെ ഗൃഹത്തോടും നിന്റെ ദയ ഒരിക്കലും അറ്റുപോകരുതു; യഹോവ ദാവീദിന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളെ ഒട്ടൊഴിയാതെ ഭൂതലത്തില്നിന്നു ഛേദിച്ചുകളയുംകാലത്തും അറ്റുപോകരുതു.

15. Thou shalt not take away thy kindness from my house for ever, when the Lord shall have rooted out the enemies of David, every one of them from the earth, may he take away Jonathan from his house, and may the Lord require it at the hands of David's enemies.

16. ഇങ്ങനെ യോനാഥാന് ദാവീദിന്റെ ഗൃഹത്തോടെ സഖ്യതചെയ്തു. ദാവീദിന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളോടു യഹോവ ചോദിച്ചുകൊള്ളും.

16. Jonathan therefore made a covenant with the house of David: and the Lord required it at the hands of David's enemies.

17. യോനാഥാന് സ്വന്തപ്രാണനെപ്പോലെ ദാവീദിനെ സ്നേഹിക്കയാല് തന്നോടുള്ള സ്നേഹത്തെച്ചൊല്ലി അവനെക്കൊണ്ടു പിന്നെയും സത്യംചെയ്യിച്ചു.

17. And Jonathan swore again to David, because he loved him: for he loved him as his own soul.

18. പിന്നെ യോനാഥാന് ദാവീദിനോടു പറഞ്ഞതുനാളെ അമാവാസ്യയാകുന്നുവല്ലോ; നിന്റെ ഇരിപ്പിടം ഒഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുമ്പോള് നീ ഇല്ലെന്നു കാണും.

18. And Jonathan said to him: Tomorrow is the new moon, and thou wilt be missed:

19. മൂന്നു ദിവസം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടു കാര്യം നടന്ന അന്നു നീ ഒളിച്ചിരുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തേക്കു വേഗത്തില് ഇറങ്ങിവന്നു ഏസെല്കല്ലിന്റെ അരികെ താമസിക്കേണം.

19. For thy seat will be empty till after tomorrow. So thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place, where thou must be hid on the day when it is lawful to work, and thou shalt remain beside the stone, which is called Ezel.

20. അപ്പോള് ഞാന് അതിന്റെ ഒരുവശത്തു ഒരു ലാക്കിന്നു എയ്യുന്നഭാവത്തില് മൂന്നു അമ്പു എയ്യും.

20. And I will shoot three arrows near it, and will shoot as if I were exercising myself at a mark.

21. നീ ചെന്നു അമ്പു നോക്കി എടുത്തുകൊണ്ടു വരിക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു ഒരു ബാല്യക്കാരനെ അയക്കും. അമ്പുകള് നിന്റെ ഇപ്പുറത്തു ഇതാ, എടുത്തുകൊണ്ടു വരിക എന്നു ഞാന് ബാല്യക്കാരനോടു പറഞ്ഞാല് നീ അവ എടുത്തുകൊണ്ടു വരിക; യഹോവയാണ, നിനക്കു ശുഭമല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നും വരികയില്ല.

21. And I will send a boy, saying to him: Go and fetch me the arrows.

22. എന്നാല് ഞാന് ബാല്യക്കാരനോടുഅമ്പു നിന്റെ അപ്പുറത്തു അതാ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല് നിന്റെ വഴിക്കു പൊയ്ക്കൊള്ക; യഹോവ നിന്നെ പറഞ്ഞയച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

22. If I shall say to the boy: Behold the arrows are on this side of thee, take them up: come thou to me, because, there is peace to thee, and there is no evil, as the Lord liveth. But if I shall speak thus to the boy: Behold the arrows are beyond thee: go in peace, for the Lord hath sent thee away.

23. ഞാനും നീയും തമ്മില് പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന കാര്യത്തിലോ, യഹോവ എനിക്കും നിനക്കും മദ്ധ്യേ എന്നേക്കും സാക്ഷി.

23. And concerning the word which I and thou have spoken, the Lord be between thee and me for ever.

24. ഇങ്ങനെ ദാവീദ് വയലില് ഒളിച്ചു; അമാവാസ്യയായപ്പോള് രാജാവു പന്തിഭോജനത്തിന്നു ഇരുന്നു.

24. So David was hid in the field, and the new moon came, and the king sat down to eat bread.

25. രാജാവു പതിവുപോലെ ചുവരിന്നരികെയുള്ള തന്റെ ആസനത്തിന്മേല് ഇരുന്നു; യോനാഥാന് എഴുന്നേറ്റുനിന്നു. അബ്നേര് ശൌലിന്റെ അരികെ ഇരുന്നു; ദാവീദിന്റെ സ്ഥലമോ ഒഴിഞ്ഞുകിടന്നു.

25. And when the king sat down upon his chair (according to custom) which was beside the wall, Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place appeared empty.

26. അന്നു ശൌല് ഒന്നും പറഞ്ഞില്ല; അവന്നു എന്തോ ഭവിച്ചു അവന്നു ശുദ്ധിയില്ലായിരിക്കും; അതേ, അവന്നു ശുദ്ധിയില്ല എന്നു അവന് വിചാരിച്ചു.

26. And Saul said nothing that day, for he thought it might have happened to him, that he was not clean, nor purified.

27. അമാവാസ്യയുടെ പിറ്റെന്നാളും ദാവീദിന്റെ സ്ഥലം ഒഴിഞ്ഞുകിടന്നു; ശൌല് തന്റെ മകനായ യോനാഥാനോടുയിശ്ശായിയുടെ മകന് ഇന്നലെയും ഇന്നും പന്തിഭോജനത്തിന്നു വരാതിരിക്കുന്നതു എന്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

27. And when the second day after the new moon was come, David's place appeared empty again. And Saul said to Jonathan his son: Why cometh not the son of Isai to meat neither yesterday nor today?

28. യോനാഥാന് ശൌലിനോടുദാവീദ് ബേത്ത്ളേഹെമില് പോകുവാന് എന്നോടു താല്പര്യമായി അനുവാദം ചോദിച്ചു

28. And Jonathan answered Saul: He asked leave of me earnestly to go to Bethlehem,

29. ഞങ്ങളുടെ കുലത്തിന്നു പട്ടണത്തില് ഒരു യാഗമുള്ളതുകൊണ്ടു എന്നെ വിട്ടയക്കേണമേ; എന്റെ ജ്യേഷ്ഠന് തന്നേ എന്നോടു കല്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; ആകയാല് നിനക്കു എന്നോടു കൃപയുണ്ടെങ്കില് ഞാന് എന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരെ ചെന്നുകാണ്മാന് അനുവദിക്കേണമേ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അതുകൊണ്ടാകുന്നു അവന് രാജാവിന്റെ പന്തിഭോജനത്തിന്നു വരാതിരിക്കുന്നതു എന്നുത്തരം പറഞ്ഞു.

29. And he said: Let me go, for there is a solemn sacrifice in the city, one of my brethren hath sent for me: and now if I have found favour in thy eyes, I will go quickly, and see my brethren. For this cause he came not to the king's table.

30. അപ്പോള് ശൌലിന്റെ കോപം യോനാഥാന്റെ നേരെ ജ്വലിച്ചു; അവന് അവനോടുവക്രതയും ദുശ്ശാഠ്യവും ഉള്ളവളുടെ മകനേ, നിന്റെ സ്വന്തലജ്ജെക്കും നിന്റെ അമ്മയുടെ നഗ്നതയുടെ ലജ്ജെക്കുമായി നീ യിശ്ശായിയുടെ മകനോടു കൂടിയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു എനിക്കു അറിഞ്ഞുകൂടയോ?

30. Then Saul being angry against Jonathan said to him: Thou son of a woman that is the ravisher of a man, do I not know that thou lovest the son of Isai to thy own confusion and to the confusion of thy shameless mother?

32. യോനാഥാന് തന്റെ അപ്പനായ ശൌലിനോടുഅവനെ എന്തിന്നു കൊല്ലുന്നു? അവന് എന്തു ചെയ്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

32. And Jonathan answering Saul his father, said: Why shall he die: what hath he done?

33. അപ്പോള് ശൌല് അവനെ കൊല്ലുവാന് അവന്റെ നേരെ കുന്തം ചാടി; അതിനാല് തന്റെ അപ്പന് ദാവീദിനെ കൊല്ലുവാന് നിര്ണ്ണയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു യോനാഥാന് അറിഞ്ഞു.

33. And Saul caught up a spear to strike him. And Jonathan understood that it was determined by his father to kill David.

34. യോനാഥാന് അതികോപത്തോടെ പന്തിഭോജനത്തില്നിന്നു എഴുന്നേറ്റു; അമാവാസ്യയുടെ പിറ്റെന്നാള് ഭക്ഷണം ഒന്നും കഴിച്ചതുമില്ല; തന്റെ അപ്പന് ദാവീദിനെ അപമാനിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു അവനെക്കുറിച്ചു അവന് വ്യസനിച്ചിരുന്നു.

34. So Jonathan rose from the table in great anger, and did not eat bread on the second day after the new moon. For he was grieved for David, because his father had put him to confusion.

35. പിറ്റെന്നാള് രാവിലെ, ദാവീദുമായി നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരുന്ന സമയത്തു, യോനാഥാന് ഒരു ചെറിയ ബാല്യക്കാരനോടുകൂടെ വയലിലേക്കു പോയി.

35. And when the morning came, Jonathan went into the field, according to the appointment with David, and a little boy with him.

36. അവന് തന്റെ ബാല്യക്കാരനോടുഔടിച്ചെന്നു ഞാന് എയ്യുന്ന അമ്പു എടുത്തുകൊണ്ടുവാ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ബാല്യക്കാരന് ഔടുമ്പോള് അവന്റെ അപ്പുറത്തേക്കു ഒരു അമ്പു എയ്തു.

36. And he said to his boy: Go, and fetch me the arrows which I shoot. And when the boy ran, he shot another arrow beyond the boy.

37. യോനാഥാന് എയ്ത അമ്പു വീണേടത്തു ബാല്യക്കാരന് എത്തിയപ്പോള് യോനാഥാന് ബാല്യക്കാരനോടുഅമ്പു നിന്റെ അപ്പുറത്തല്ലയോ എന്നു വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു.

37. The boy therefore came to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot: and Jonathan cried after the boy, and said: Behold the arrow is there further beyond thee.

38. പിന്നെയും യോനാഥാന് ബാല്യക്കാരനോടുബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു ഔടിവരിക, നില്ക്കരുതു എന്നു വിളിച്ചുപറഞ്ഞു. യോനാഥാന്റെ ബാല്യക്കാരന് അമ്പുകളെ പെറുക്കി യജമാനന്റെ അടുക്കല് കൊണ്ടുവന്നു.

38. And Jonathan cried again after the boy, saying: Make haste speedily, stand not. And Jonathan's boy gathered up the arrows, and brought them to his master:

39. എന്നാല് യോനാഥാനും ദാവീദും അല്ലാതെ ബാല്യക്കാരന് കാര്യം ഒന്നും അറിഞ്ഞില്ല.

39. And he knew not at all what was doing: for only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

40. പിന്നെ യോനാഥാന് തന്റെ ആയുധങ്ങളെ ബാല്യക്കാരന്റെ പക്കല് കൊടുത്തുപട്ടണത്തിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടുപോക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

40. Jonathan therefore gave his arms to the boy, and said to him: Go, and carry them into the city.

41. ബാല്യക്കാരന് പോയ ഉടനെ ദാവീദ് തെക്കുവശത്തുനിന്നു എഴുന്നേറ്റുവന്നു മൂന്നു പ്രാവശ്യം സാഷ്ടാംഗം വീണു നമസ്കരിച്ചു; അവര് തമ്മില് ചുംബനംചെയ്തു കരഞ്ഞു; ദാവീദോ ഉച്ചത്തില് കരഞ്ഞുപോയി.

41. And when the boy was gone, David rose out of his place, which was towards the south, and falling on his face to the ground, adored thrice: and kissing one another, they wept together, but David more.

42. യോനാഥാന് ദാവീദിനോടുയഹോവ എനിക്കും നിനക്കും എന്റെ സന്തതിക്കും നിന്റെ സന്തതിക്കും മദ്ധ്യേ എന്നേക്കും സാക്ഷി എന്നിങ്ങനെ നാം ഇരുവരും യഹോവയുടെ നാമത്തില് സത്യം ചെയ്തിരിക്കകൊണ്ടു സമാധാനത്തോടെ പോക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ അവന് എഴുന്നേറ്റു പോയി; യോനാഥാനോ പട്ടണത്തിലേക്കു പോന്നു.

42. And Jonathan said to David: Go in peace: and let all stand that we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying: The Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever.
