1. അക്കാലത്തു യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരെ വിട്ടു ഹീരാ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു അദുല്ലാമ്യന്റെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു;

1. And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned unto a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

2. അവിടെ ശൂവാ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു കനാന്യന്റെ മകളെ കണ്ടു; അവളെ പരിഗ്രഹിച്ചു അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു.

2. And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shua; and he took her, and went in unto her.

3. അവള് ഗര്ഭംധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന്നു ഏര് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

3. And she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er.

4. അവള് പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭംധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന്നു ഔനാന് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

4. And she conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan.

5. അവള് പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന്നു ശേലാ എന്നു പേരിട്ടു. അവള് ഇവനെ പ്രസവിച്ചപ്പോള് അവന് കെസീബില് ആയിരുന്നു.

5. And she yet again conceived and bore a son, and called his name Shelah. And he was at Chezib when she bore him.

6. യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ ആദ്യജാതനായ ഏരിന്നു താമാര് എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു ഭാര്യയെ എടുത്തു.

6. And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

7. യെഹൂദയുടെ ആദ്യജാതനായ ഏര് യഹോവേക്കു അനിഷ്ടനായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു യഹോവ അവനെ മരിപ്പിച്ചു.

7. And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

8. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാ ഔനാനോടുനിന്റെ ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു അവളോടു ദേവരധര്മ്മം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു, ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ പേര്ക്കും സന്തതിയെ ഉളവാക്കുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. And Judah said unto Onan, 'Go in unto thy brother's wife and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.'

9. എന്നാല് ആ സന്തതി തന്റേതായിരിക്കയില്ല എന്നു ഔനാന് അറികകൊണ്ടു ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നപ്പോള് ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്നു സന്തതിയെ കൊടുക്കാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു നിലത്തു വീഴ്ത്തിക്കളഞ്ഞു.

9. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.

10. അവന് ചെയ്തതു യഹോവേക്കു അനിഷ്ടമായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവന് ഇവനെയും മരിപ്പിച്ചു.

10. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD; therefore He slew him also.

11. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ മരുമകളായ താമാരോടുഎന്റെ മകന് ശേലാ പ്രാപ്തിയാകുവോളം നീ അപ്പന്റെ വീട്ടില് വിധവയായി പാര്ക്ക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; ഇവനും സഹോദരന്മാരെപ്പോലെ മരിച്ചുപോകരുതു എന്നു അവന് വിചാരിച്ചു; അങ്ങനെ താമാര് അപ്പന്റെ വീട്ടില്പോയി പാര്ത്തു.

11. Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law, 'Remain a widow at thy father's house, until Shelah my son is grown'; for he said, 'Lest perhaps he die also, as his brethren did.' And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

12. കുറെ കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടു ശൂവയുടെ മകള് യെഹൂദയുടെ ഭാര്യ മരിച്ചു; യെഹൂദയുടെ ദുഃഖം മാറിയശേഷം അവന് തന്റെ സ്നേഹിതന് അദുല്ലാമ്യനായ ഹീരയോടുകൂടെ തന്റെ ആടുകളെ രോമം കത്രിക്കുന്ന അടിയന്തരത്തിന്നു പോയി.

12. And in process of time, the daughter of Shua, Judah's wife, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13. നിന്റെ അമ്മായപ്പന് തന്റെ ആടുകളെ രോമം കത്രിക്കുന്ന അടിയന്തരത്തിന്നു തിമ്നെക്കു പോകുന്നു എന്നു താമാരിന്നു അറിവു കിട്ടി.

13. And it was told Tamar, saying, 'Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Timnah to shear his sheep.'

14. ശേലാ പ്രാപ്തിയായിട്ടും തന്നെ അവന്നു ഭാര്യയായി കൊടുത്തില്ല എന്നു കണ്ടിട്ടു അവള് വൈധവ്യവസ്ത്രം മാറ്റിവെച്ചു, ഒരു മൂടുപടം മൂടി പുതെച്ചു തിമ്നെക്കു പോകുന്ന വഴിക്കുള്ള എനയീംപട്ടണത്തിന്റെ ഗോപുരത്തില് ഇരുന്നു.

14. And she put her widow's garments off from her and covered herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him as wife.

15. യെഹൂദാ അവളെ കണ്ടപ്പോള് അവള് മുഖം മൂടിയിരുന്നതു കൊണ്ടു ഒരു വേശ്യ എന്നു നിരൂപിച്ചു.

15. When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot, because she had covered her face.

16. അവന് വഴിയരികെ അവളുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കു തിരിഞ്ഞുതന്റെ മരുമകള് എന്നു അറിയാതെവരിക, ഞാന് നിന്റെ അടുക്കല് വരട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. എന്റെ അടുക്കല് വരുന്നതിന്നു നീ എനിക്കു എന്തു തരും എന്നു അവള് ചോദിച്ചു.

16. And he turned unto her on the wayside and said, 'Come, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee' (for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law). And she said, 'What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?'

17. ഞാന് ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടത്തില് നിന്നു ഒരു കോലാട്ടിന് കുട്ടിയെ നിനക്കു കൊടുത്തയക്കാം എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു. നീ കൊടുത്തയക്കുവോളത്തിന്നു ഒരു പണയം തരുമോ എന്നു അവള് ചോദിച്ചു.

17. And he said, 'I will send thee a kid from the flock.' And she said, 'Wilt thou give me a pledge until thou send it?'

18. എന്തു പണയം തരേണം എന്നു അവന് ചോദിച്ചതിന്നു നിന്റെ മുദ്രമോതിരവും മോതിരച്ചരടും നിന്റെ കയ്യിലെ വടിയും എന്നു അവള് പറഞ്ഞു. ഇവ അവള്ക്കു കൊടുത്തു, അവന് അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു; അവള് ഗര്ഭം ധരിക്കയും ചെയ്തു.

18. And he said, 'What pledge shall I give thee?' And she said, 'Thy signet and thy bracelets and thy staff that is in thine hand.' And he gave it to her and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

19. പിന്നെ അവള് എഴുന്നേറ്റു പോയി, തന്റെ മൂടുപടം നീക്കി വൈധവ്യവസ്ത്രം ധരിച്ചു.

19. And she arose and went away, and laid aside her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20. സ്ത്രീയുടെ കയ്യില്നിന്നു പണയം മടക്കിവാങ്ങേണ്ടതിന്നു യെഹൂദാ അദുല്ലാമ്യനായ സ്നേഹിതന്റെ കൈവശം ആട്ടിന് കുട്ടിയെ കൊടുത്തയച്ചു; അവന് അവളെ കണ്ടില്ലതാനും.

20. And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite to receive his pledge from the woman's hand, but he found her not.

21. അവന് ആ സ്ഥലത്തെ ആളുകളോടുഏനയീമില് വഴിയരികെ ഇരുന്ന വേശ്യ എവിടെ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുഇവിടെ ഒരു വേശ്യയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല എന്നു അവര് പറഞ്ഞു.

21. Then he asked the men of that place, saying, 'Where is the harlot who was openly by the wayside?' And they said, 'There was no harlot in this place.'

22. അവന് യെഹൂദയുടെ അടുക്കല് മടങ്ങിവന്നുഞാന് അവളെ കണ്ടില്ല; ഈ സ്ഥലത്തു ഒരു വേശ്യയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല എന്നു അവിടെയുള്ള ആളുകള് പറഞ്ഞു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു

22. And he returned to Judah and said, 'I cannot find her, and also the men of the place said that there was no harlot in this place.'

23. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാ നമുക്കു അപകീര്ത്തി ഉണ്ടാകാതിരിപ്പാന് അവള് അതു എടുത്തുകൊള്ളട്ടെ; ഞാന് ഈ ആട്ടിന് കുട്ടിയെ കൊടുത്തയച്ചുവല്ലോ; നീ അവളെ കണ്ടില്ലതാനും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

23. And Judah said, 'Let her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.'

24. ഏകദേശം മൂന്നുമാസം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുനിന്റെ മരുമകള് താമാര് പരസംഗംചെയ്തു, പരസംഗത്താല് ഗര്ഭിണിയായിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു യെഹൂദെക്കു അറിവുകിട്ടി. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാഅവളെ പുറത്തുകൊണ്ടു വരുവിന് ; അവളെ ചുട്ടുകളയേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

24. And it came to pass about three months after that it was told Judah, saying, 'Tamar thy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom.' And Judah said, 'Bring her forth, and let her be burned.'

25. അവളെ പുറത്തു കൊണ്ടുവന്നപ്പോള് അവള് അമ്മായപ്പന്റെ അടുക്കല് ആളയച്ചുഇവയുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥനായ പുരുഷനാല് ആകുന്നു ഞാന് ഗര്ഭിണിയായിരിക്കുന്നതു; ഈ മുദ്രമോതിരവും മോതിരച്ചരടും വടിയും ആര്ക്കുംള്ളതു എന്നു നോക്കി അറിയേണം എന്നു പറയിച്ചു.

25. When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, 'By the man whose these are, am I with child.' And she said, 'Discern, I pray thee, whose are these -- the signet, and bracelets, and staff.'

26. യെഹൂദാ അവയെ അറിഞ്ഞുഅവള് എന്നിലും നീതിയുള്ളവള്; ഞാന് അവളെ എന്റെ മകന് ശേലാവിന്നു കൊടുത്തില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അതില് പിന്നെ അവളെ പരിഗ്രഹിച്ചതുമില്ല.

26. And Judah acknowledged them and said, 'She hath been more righteous than I, because I gave her not to Shelah my son.' And he knew her again no more.

27. അവള്ക്കു പ്രസവകാലം ആയപ്പോള് അവളുടെ ഗര്ഭത്തില് ഇരട്ടപ്പിള്ളകള് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

27. And it came to pass in the time of her travail that, behold, twins were in her womb.

28. അവള് പ്രസവിക്കുമ്പോള് ഒരു പിള്ള കൈ പുറത്തു നീട്ടി; അപ്പോള് സൂതികര്മ്മിണി ഒരു ചുവന്ന നൂല് എടുത്തു അവന്റെ കൈകൂ കെട്ടി; ഇവന് ആദ്യം പുറത്തുവന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

28. And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, 'This came out first.'

29. അവനോ കൈ പിന്നെയും അകത്തേക്കു വലിച്ചു. അപ്പോള് അവന്റെ സഹോദരന് പുറത്തുവന്നുനീ ഛിദ്രം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയതു എന്തു എന്നു അവള് പറഞ്ഞു. അതുകൊണ്ടു അവന്നു പെരെസ്സ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

29. And it came to pass as he drew back his hand that, behold, his brother came out; and she said, 'How hast thou broken forth? This breach be upon thee.' Therefore his name was called Perez [that is, A breach].

30. അതിന്റെ ശേഷം കൈമേല് ചുവന്ന നൂലുള്ള അവന്റെ സഹോദരന് പുറത്തുവന്നു; അവന്നു സേരഹ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

30. And afterward came out his brother who had the scarlet thread upon his hand, and his name was called Zerah.
