1. അനന്തരം ദാവീദ് തന്നോടുകൂടെയുള്ള ജനത്തെ എണ്ണിനോക്കി; അവര്ക്കും സഹസ്രാധിപന്മാരെയും ശതാധിപന്മാരെയും നിയമിച്ചു.

1. David counted his men and chose captains over 1000 and captains over 100 to lead them.

2. ദാവീദ് ജനത്തില് മൂന്നില് ഒരു പങ്കു യോവാബിന്റെ കൈക്കീഴും മൂന്നില് ഒരു പങ്കു സെരൂയയുടെ മകനും യോവാബിന്റെ സഹോദരനും ആയ അബീശായിയുടെ കൈക്കീഴും മൂന്നില് ഒരു പങ്കു ഗിത്യനായ ഇത്ഥായിയുടെ കൈക്കീഴും അയച്ചുഞാനും നിങ്ങളോടുകൂടെ വരും എന്നു രാജാവു ജനത്തോടു പറഞ്ഞു.

2. He separated them into three groups and sent them out. Joab led a third of the men. Joab's brother, Abishai son of Zeruiah led another third. And Ittai from Gath led the last third. King David said to them, 'I will also go with you.'

3. But they said, 'No! You must not go with us. If we run away in the battle, Absalom's men will not care. No, even if only half of us are killed, Absalom's men will not care. But you are worth 10,000 of us! It is better for you to stay in the city. Then, if we need help, you can come help us.'

4. രാജാവു അവരോടുനിങ്ങള്ക്കു ഉത്തമം എന്നു തോന്നുന്നതു ഞാന് ചെയ്യാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. പിന്നെ രാജാവു പടിവാതില്ക്കല് നിന്നു; ജനമൊക്കെയും നൂറുനൂറായും ആയിരമായിരമായും പുറപ്പെട്ടു.

4. The king said to them, 'I will do what you think is best.' Then the king stood by the gate as the army went out in groups of 100 and 1000.

5. അബ്ശാലോംകുമാരനോടു എന്നെ ഔര്ത്തു കനിവോടെ പെരുമാറുവിന് എന്നു രാജാവു യോവാബിനോടും അബീശായിയോടും ഇത്ഥായിയോടും കല്പിച്ചു. രാജാവു അധിപതിമാരോടൊക്കെയും അബ്ശാലോമിനെക്കുറിച്ചു കല്പിക്കുമ്പോള് ജനമെല്ലാം കേട്ടു.

5. The king gave a command to Joab, Abishai, and Ittai. He said, 'Do this for me: Be gentle with young Absalom!' Everyone heard the king's orders about Absalom to the captains.

6. പിന്നെ ജനം പടനിലത്തേക്കു യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ നേരെ പുറപ്പെട്ടു; എഫ്രയീംവനത്തില്വെച്ചു പടയുണ്ടായി.

6. David's army went out into the field against Absalom's Israelites. They fought in the forest of Ephraim.

7. യിസ്രായേല് ജനം ദാവീദിന്റെ ചേവകരോടു തോറ്റു. അന്നു അവിടെ ഒരു മഹാസംഹാരം നടന്നു ഇരുപതിനായിരം പേര് പട്ടുപോയി.

7. David's army defeated the Israelites. It was a great defeat because 20,000 men were killed that day.

8. പട ആ ദേശത്തെല്ലാടവും പരന്നു; അന്നു വാളിന്നിരയായതിലും അധികം പേര് വനത്തിന്നിരയായ്തീര്ന്നു.

8. The battle spread throughout the country, but more men died in the forest than by the sword.

9. അബ്ശാലോം ദാവീദിന്റെ ചേവകര്ക്കും എതിര്പ്പെട്ടു; അബ്ശാലോം കോവര്കഴുതപ്പുറത്തു ഔടിച്ചുപോകുമ്പോള് കോവര്കഴുത കൊമ്പു തിങ്ങിനിലക്കുന്ന ഒരു വലിയ കരുവേലകത്തിന് കീഴെ എത്തി; അവന്റെ തലമുടി കരുവേലകത്തില് പിടിപെട്ടിട്ടു അവന് ആകാശത്തിന്നും ഭൂമിക്കും മദ്ധ്യേ തൂങ്ങി; അവന്റെ കീഴില്നിന്നു കോവര്കഴുത ഔടിപ്പോയി.

9. It so happened that David's officers found Absalom. Absalom jumped on his mule and tried to escape, but the mule went under the branches of a large oak tree. The branches were thick, and Absalom's head got caught in the tree. His mule ran out from under him, so Absalom was left hanging above the ground.

10. ഒരുത്തന് അതു കണ്ടിട്ടുഅബ്ശാലോം ഒരു കരുവേലകത്തില് തൂങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്നതു ഞാന് കണ്ടു എന്നു യോവാബിനോടു അറിയിച്ചു.

10. Someone saw this happen and told Joab, 'I saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree.'

11. യോവാബ് തന്നെ അറിയിച്ചവനോടുനീ അവനെ കണ്ടിട്ടു അവിടെവെച്ചുതന്നേ വെട്ടിക്കളയാഞ്ഞതു എന്തു? ഞാന് നിനക്കു പത്തു ശേക്കെല് വെള്ളിയും ഒരു അരക്കച്ചയും തരുമായിരുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

11. Joab said to the man, 'Why didn't you kill him and let him fall to the ground? I would have given you a belt and ten pieces of silver!'

12. അവന് യോവാബിനോടു പറഞ്ഞതുആയിരം ശേക്കെല് വെള്ളി എനിക്കു തന്നാലും ഞാന് രാജകുമാരന്റെ നേരെ കൈ നീട്ടുകയില്ല; അബ്ശാലോംകുമാരനെ ആരും തൊടാതിരിപ്പാന് സൂക്ഷിച്ചുകൊള്വിന് എന്നു രാജാവു നിന്നോടും അബീശായിയോടും ഇത്ഥായിയോടും ഞങ്ങള് കേള്ക്കെയല്ലോ കല്പിച്ചതു.

12. The man said to Joab, 'I would not try to hurt the king's son even if you gave me 1000 pieces of silver. We heard the king's command to you, Abishai, and Ittai. The king said, 'Be careful not to hurt young Absalom.'

13. അല്ല, ഞാന് അവന്റെ പ്രാണനെ ദ്രോഹിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കില്--രാജാവിന്നു ഒന്നും മറവായിരിക്കയില്ലല്ലോ--നീ തന്നേ എന്നോടു അകന്നു നിലക്കുമായിരുന്നു.

13. If I had killed Absalom, the king himself would find out, and you would punish me. '

14. എന്നാല് യോവാബ്ഞാന് ഇങ്ങനെ നിന്നോടു സംസാരിച്ചു നേരം കളകയില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു മൂന്നു കുന്തം കയ്യില് എടുത്തു അബ്ശാലോം കരുവേലകത്തില് ജീവനോടു തൂങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുമ്പോള് തന്നേ അവയെ അവന്റെ നെഞ്ചിന്നകത്തു കുത്തിക്കടത്തി.

14. Joab said, 'I will not waste my time here with you!' Absalom was still alive and hanging in the oak tree. Joab took three sticks in his hand and hit him in the heart.

15. യോവാബിന്റെ ആയുധവാഹകന്മാരായ പത്തു ബാല്യക്കാര് വളഞ്ഞു നിന്നു അബ്ശാലോമിനെ അടിച്ചുകൊന്നു.

15. Ten of Joab's young helpers gathered around Absalom and killed him.

16. പിന്നെ യോവാബ് കാഹളം ഊതി; യോവാബ് ജനത്തെ വിലക്കിയതുകൊണ്ടു അവര് യിസ്രായേലിനെ പിന്തുടരുന്നതു വിട്ടുമടങ്ങി.

16. Joab blew the trumpet and called the people to stop chasing Israelites.

17. അബ്ശാലോമിനെ അവര് എടുത്തു വനത്തില് ഒരു വലിയ കുഴിയില് ഇട്ടു; അവന്റെ മേല് ഏറ്റവും വലിയോരു കല്ക്കൂമ്പാരം കൂട്ടി; യിസ്രായേലൊക്കെയും താന്താന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു ഔടിപ്പോയി.

17. Then Joab's men took Absalom's body and threw it into a large hole in the forest and covered it with stones. All the Israelites ran away and went home.

18. അബ്ശാലോം ജീവനോടിരുന്ന സമയംഎന്റെ പേര് നിലനിര്ത്തേണ്ടതിന്നു എനിക്കു മകനില്ലല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു, രാജാവിന് താഴ്വരയിലെ തൂണ് എടുത്തു നാട്ടി അതിന്നു തന്റെ പേര് വിളിച്ചിരുന്നു; അതിന്നു ഇന്നുവരെ അബ്ശാലോമിന്റെ ജ്ഞാപക സ്തംഭം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞുവരുന്നു.

18. While Absalom was alive he put up a memorial stone in King's Valley. He said, 'I have no son to keep my name alive.' So he named that monument after himself. It is called 'Absalom's Monument' even today.

19. അനന്തരം സാദോക്കിന്റെ മകനായ അഹീമാസ്ഞാന് ഔടിച്ചെന്നു രാജാവിനോടു, യഹോവ അവന്നുവേണ്ടി ശത്രുക്കളോടു പ്രതികാരം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്ന സദ്വര്ത്തമാനം അറിയിക്കട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

19. Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said to Joab, 'May I run and take the news to King David? I'll tell him the Lord has destroyed the enemy for him.'

20. യോവാബ് അവനോടുനീ ഇന്നു സദ്വര്ത്തമാന ദൂതനാകയില്ല; ഇനി ഒരു ദിവസം സദ്വര്ത്തമാനം കൊണ്ടുപോകാം; രാജകുമാരന് മരിച്ചിരിക്കകൊണ്ടു നീ ഇന്നു സദ്വര്ത്തമാന ദൂതനാകയില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

20. Joab answered Ahimaaz, 'No, you will not carry the message today. You can do it some other time, but not today because it is the king's son who is dead.'

21. പിന്നെ യോവാബ് കൂശ്യനോടുനി കണ്ടതു രാജാവിനെ ചെന്നു അറിയിക്ക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. കൂശ്യന് യോവാബിനെ വണങ്ങി ഔടി. സാദോക്കിന്റെ മകനായ അഹീമാസ് പിന്നെയും യോവാബിനോടുഏതായാലും ഞാനും കൂശ്യന്റെ പിന്നാലെ ഔടട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

21. Then Joab said to a man from Ethiopia, 'Go, tell the king what you have seen.' So the Ethiopian bowed to Joab and ran to tell David.

22. അതിന്നു യോവാബ്എന്റെ മകനേ, നീ എന്തിന്നു ഔടുന്നു? നിനക്കു പ്രതിഫലം കിട്ടുകയില്ലല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

22. But Ahimaaz son of Zadok begged Joab again, 'No matter what happens, please let me also run after the Ethiopian!' Joab said, 'Son, why do you want to carry the news? You will not get any reward for the news you bring.'

23. അവന് പിന്നെയുംഏതായാലും ഞാന് ഔടും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞതിന്നുഎന്നാല് ഔടിക്കൊള്ക എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ അഹീമാസ് സമഭൂമിവഴിയായി ഔടി കൂശ്യനെ കടന്നുപോയി.

23. Ahimaaz answered, 'No matter what happens, I will run to David.' Joab said to Ahimaaz, 'All right, run to David!' Then Ahimaaz ran through Jordan Valley and passed the Ethiopian.

24. എന്നാല് ദാവീദ് രണ്ടു പടിവാതിലിന്നു മദ്ധ്യേ ഇരിക്കയായിരുന്നു. കാവല്ക്കാരന് പടിവാതിലിന്നും മീതെ മതിലിന്റെ മുകളില് കയറി തല ഉയര്ത്തിനോക്കി ഒരുത്തന് തനിച്ചു ഔടിവരുന്നതു കണ്ടു.

24. David was sitting between the two gates of the city. The watchman went up to the roof over the gate walls and saw a man running alone.

25. കാവല്ക്കാരന് രാജാവിനോടു വിളിച്ചു അറിയിച്ചു. അവന് ഏകന് എങ്കില് സദ്വര്ത്തമാനവും കൊണ്ടാകുന്നു വരുന്നതു എന്നു രാജാവു പറഞ്ഞു.

25. The watchman shouted to tell King David. King David said, 'If the man is alone, he is bringing news.' The man came closer and closer to the city.

26. അവന് നടന്നു അടുത്തു. പിന്നെ കാവല്ക്കാരന് മറ്റൊരുത്തന് ഔടിവരുന്നതു കണ്ടു; കാവല്ക്കാരന് വാതില് കാക്കുന്നവനോടുഇതാ, പിന്നെയും ഒരു ആള് തനിച്ചു ഔടി വരുന്നു എന്നു വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു. അവനും സദ്വര്ത്തമാനദൂതനാകുന്നു എന്നു രാജാവു പറഞ്ഞു.

26. But then the watchman saw another man running. He called to the gatekeeper, 'Look! Another man is running alone.' The king said, 'He is also bringing news.'

27. ഒന്നാമത്തവന്റെ ഔട്ടം സാദോക്കിന്റെ മകനായ അഹീമാസിന്റെ ഔട്ടം പോലെ എനിക്കു തോന്നുന്നു എന്നു കാവല്ക്കാരന് പറഞ്ഞു. അതിന്നു രാജാവുഅവന് നല്ലവന് ; നല്ലവര്ത്തമാനം കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

27. The watchman said, 'I think the first man runs like Ahimaaz son of Zadok.' The king said, 'Ahimaaz is a good man, he must be bringing good news.'

28. അഹീമാസ് രാജാവിനോടു ശുഭം, ശുഭം എന്നു വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു രാജാവിന്റെ മുമ്പില് സാഷ്ടാംഗം വീണു നമസ്കരിച്ചുയജമാനനായ രാജാവിന്റെ നേരെ കൈ ഔങ്ങിയവരെ ഏല്പിച്ചുതന്ന നിന്റെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ സ്തുതിക്കപ്പെട്ടവന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

28. Ahimaaz called to the king, 'All is well!' Ahimaaz bowed with his face to the ground in front of the king and said, 'Praise the Lord your God! The Lord has defeated the men who were against you, my lord and king.'

29. അപ്പോള് രാജാവു അബ്ശാലോംകുമാരന് സുഖമായിരിക്കുന്നുവോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. അതിന്നു അഹീമാസ്യോവാബ് രാജാവിന്റെ ഭൃത്യനെയും അടിയനെയും അയക്കുമ്പോള് വലിയോരു കലഹം കണ്ടു; എന്നാല് അതു എന്തെന്നു ഞാന് അറിഞ്ഞില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

29. The king asked, 'Is young Absalom all right?' Ahimaaz answered, 'When Joab sent me, I saw some great excitement, but I don't know what it was.'

30. നീ അവിടെ മാറി നില്ക്ക എന്നു രാജാവു പറഞ്ഞു. അവന് മാറിനിന്നു.

30. Then the king said, 'Step over here and wait.' Ahimaaz went there and stood waiting.

31. ഉടനെ കൂശ്യന് വന്നുയജമാനനായ രാജാവിന്നു ഇതാ നല്ല വര്ത്തമാനം; നിന്നോടു എതിര്ത്ത എല്ലാവരോടും യഹോവ ഇന്നു നിനക്കുവേണ്ടി പ്രതികാരം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു കൂശ്യന് പറഞ്ഞു.

31. The Ethiopian arrived and he said, 'News for my lord and king. Today the Lord has punished all those who were against you!'

32. അപ്പോള് രാജാവു കൂശ്യനോടുഅബ്ശാലോംകുമാരന് സുഖമായിരിക്കുന്നുവോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. അതിന്നു കൂശ്യന് യജമാനനായ രാജാവിന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളും നിന്നോടു ദോഷം ചെയ്വാന് എഴുന്നേലക്കുന്ന എല്ലാവരും ആ കുമാരനെപ്പോലെ ആകട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

32. The king asked the Ethiopian, 'Is young Absalom all right?' The Ethiopian answered, 'May your enemies, or whoever tries to hurt you, suffer the same as this young man did.'

33. ഉടനെ രാജാവു നടുങ്ങി പടിപ്പുരമാളികയില് കയറിഎന്റെ മകനേ, അബ്ശാലോമേ, എന്റെ മകനേ, എന്റെ മകനേ, അബ്ശാലോമേ, ഞാന് നിനക്കു പകരം മരിച്ചെങ്കില് കൊള്ളായിരുന്നു; അബ്ശാലോമേ, എന്റെ മകനേ, എന്റെ മകനേ! എന്നിങ്ങനെ പറഞ്ഞു കരഞ്ഞുംകൊണ്ടു നടന്നു.

33. So the king knew Absalom was dead and he became very upset. He went upstairs to the room over the gate, crying 'O my son Absalom! My son Absalom, I wish I had died instead of you! O Absalom, my son, my son!'
