1. അനന്തരം ദാവീദ് യഹോവയോടുഞാന് യെഹൂദ്യനഗരങ്ങളില് ഒന്നിലേക്കു ചെല്ലേണമോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. യഹോവ അവനോടുചെല്ലുക എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു. ഞാന് എവിടേക്കു ചെല്ലേണ്ടു എന്നു ദാവീദ് ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുഹെബ്രോനിലേക്കു എന്നു അരുളപ്പാടുണ്ടായി.

1. And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said to him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, To Hebron.

2. അങ്ങനെ ദാവീദ് യിസ്രെയേല്ക്കാരത്തി അഹീനോവം, കര്മ്മേല്യന് നാബാലിന്റെ ഭാര്യയായിരുന്ന അബീഗയില് എന്നീ രണ്ടു ഭാര്യമാരുമായി അവിടേക്കു ചെന്നു.

2. So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail, Nabal's wife the Carmelite.

3. ദാവീദ് തന്നോടുകൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ആളുകളെ ഒക്കെയും കുടുംബസഹിതം കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോയി; അവര് ഹെബ്രോന്യപട്ടണങ്ങളില് പാര്ത്തു.

3. And his men that {were} with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

4. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാപുരുഷന്മാര് വന്നു അവിടെവെച്ചു ദാവീദിനെ യെഹൂദാഗൃഹത്തിന്നു രാജാവായിട്ടു അഭിഷേകം ചെയ്തു.

4. And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, {That} the men of Jabesh-gilead {were they} that buried Saul.

5. ഗിലെയാദിലെ യാബേശ് നിവാസികള് ആയിരുന്നു ശൌലിനെ അടക്കംചെയ്തതു എന്നു ദാവീദിന്നു അറിവുകിട്ടി. ദാവീദ്, ഗിലെയാദിലെ യാബേശ് നിവാസികളുടെ അടുക്കല് ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചുനിങ്ങളുടെ യജമാനനായ ശൌലിനോടു ഇങ്ങനെ ദയകാണിച്ചു അവനെ അടക്കം ചെയ്കകൊണ്ടു നിങ്ങള് യഹോവയാല് അനുഗ്രഹിക്കപ്പെട്ടവര്.

5. And David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said to them, Blessed {be} ye of the LORD, that ye have shown this kindness to your lord, {even} to Saul, and have buried him.

6. യഹോവ നിങ്ങളോടു ദയയും വിശ്വസ്തതയും കാണിക്കുമാറാകട്ടെ; നിങ്ങള് ഈ കാര്യം ചെയ്തിരിക്കകൊണ്ടു ഞാനും നിങ്ങള്ക്കു നന്മ ചെയ്യും.

6. And now the LORD show kindness and truth to you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.

7. ആകയാല് നിങ്ങള് ധൈര്യപ്പെട്ടു ശൂരന്മാരായിരിപ്പിന് ; നിങ്ങളുടെ യജമാനനായ ശൌല് മരിച്ചുപോയല്ലോ; യെഹൂദാഗൃഹം എന്നെ തങ്ങള്ക്കു രാജാവായിട്ടു അഭിഷേകം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു പറയിച്ചു.

7. Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

8. എന്നാല് ശൌലിന്റെ സേനാപതിയായ നേരിന്റെ മകന് അബ്നേര് ശൌലിന്റെ മകനായ ഈശ്-ബോശെത്തിനെ മഹനയീമിലേക്കു കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോയി,

8. But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;

9. അവനെ ഗിലെയാദ്, അശൂരി, യിസ്രെയേല്, എഫ്രയീം, ബെന്യാമീന് എന്നിങ്ങനെ എല്ലായിസ്രായേല്യര്ക്കും രാജാവാക്കി,

9. And he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

10. ശൌലിന്റെ മകനായ ഈശ്-ബോശെത്ത് യിസ്രായേലില് രാജാവായപ്പോള് അവന്നു നാല്പതു വയസ്സായിരുന്നു; അവന് രണ്ടു സംവത്സരം വാണു. യെഹൂദാഗൃഹമോ ദാവീദിനോടു ചേര്ന്നുനിന്നു.

10. Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, {was} forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years: but the house of Judah followed David.

11. ദാവീദ് ഹെബ്രോനില് യെഹൂദാഗൃഹത്തിന്നു രാജാവായിരുന്ന കാലം ഏഴു സംവത്സരവും ആറു മാസവും തന്നേ.

11. And the time that David was king in Hebron, over the house of Judah, was seven years and six months.

12. നേരിന്റെ മകന് അബ്നേരും ശൌലിന്റെ മകനായ ഈശ്-ബേശെത്തിന്റെ ചേവകരും മഹനയീമില്നിന്നു ഗിബെയോനിലേക്കു വന്നു.

12. And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

13. അപ്പോള് സെരൂയയുടെ മകനായ യോവാബും ദാവീദിന്റെ ചേവകരും പുറപ്പെട്ടു ഗിബെയോനിലെ കുളത്തിന്നരികെവെച്ചു അവരെ നേരിട്ടു; അവര് കുളത്തിന്റെ ഇപ്പുറത്തും മറ്റേവര് കുളത്തിന്റെ അപ്പുറത്തും ഇരുന്നു.

13. And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

14. അബ്നേര് യോവാബിനോടുബാല്യക്കാര് എഴുന്നേറ്റു നമ്മുടെ മുമ്പാകെ ഒന്നു കളിക്കട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

14. And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

15. അങ്ങനെയാകട്ടെ എന്നു യോവാബും പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ ബെന്യാമീന്യരുടെയും ശൌലിന്റെ മകനായ ഈശ്-ബോശെത്തിന്റെയും ഭാഗത്തുനിന്നു പന്ത്രണ്ടുപേരും ദാവീദിന്റെ ചേവകരില് പന്ത്രണ്ടുപേരും എണ്ണമൊത്തു എഴുന്നേറ്റു തമ്മില് അടുത്തു.

15. Then there arose, and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, who {pertained} to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

16. ഔരോരുത്തന് താന്താന്റെ എതിരാളിയെ മുടിക്കു പിടിച്ചു വിലാപ്പുറത്തു വാള് കുത്തിക്കടത്തി ഒരുമിച്ചു വീണു; അതുകൊണ്ടു ഗിബെയോനിലെ ആ സ്ഥലത്തിന്നു ഹെല്ക്കത്ത്-ഹസ്സൂരീം എന്നു പേരായി.

16. And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and {thrust} his sword in his fellow's side: so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which {is} in Gibeon.

17. അന്നു യുദ്ധം ഏറ്റവും കഠിനമായി, അബ്നേരും യിസ്രായേല്യരും ദാവീദിന്റെ ചേവകരോടു തോറ്റുപോയി.

17. And there was a very severe battle that day; and Abner was defeated, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

18. അവിടെ യോവാബ്, അബീശായി, അസാഹേല് ഇങ്ങനെ സെരൂയയുടെ മൂന്നു പുത്രന്മാരും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു; അസാഹേല് കാട്ടുകലയെപ്പോലെ ശീഘ്രഗാമി ആയിരുന്നു.

18. And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel {was as} light of foot as a wild roe.

19. അസാഹേല് അബ്നേരിനെ പിന്തുടര്ന്നു; അബ്നേരിനെ പിന്തുടരുന്നതില് വലത്തോട്ടോ ഇടത്തോട്ടോ മാറിയില്ല.

19. And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

20. അബ്നേര് പിറകോട്ടു നോക്കിനീ അസാഹേലോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുഅതേ എന്നു അവന് ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞു.

20. Then Abner looked behind him, and said, {Art} thou Asahel? And he answered, I {am}.

21. അബ്നേര് അവനോടുനീ വലത്തോട്ടോ ഇടത്തോട്ടോ തിരിഞ്ഞു, ബാല്യക്കാരില് ഒരുത്തനെ പിടിച്ചു അവന്റെ ആയുധവര്ഗ്ഗം എടുത്തുകൊള്ക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. എങ്കിലും അസാഹേലിന്നു അവനെ വിട്ടുമാറുവാന് മനസ്സായില്ല.

21. And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay hold on one of the young men, and take to thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.

22. അബ്നേര് അസാഹേലിനോടുഎന്നെ വിട്ടുപോക; ഞാന് നിന്നെ വെട്ടിവീഴിക്കുന്നതു എന്തിന്നു? പിന്നെ ഞാന് നിന്റെ സഹോദരനായ യോവാബിന്റെ മുഖത്തു എങ്ങനെ നോക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

22. And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: Why should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?

23. എന്നാറെയും വിട്ടുമാറുവാന് അവന്നു മനസ്സായില്ല; അബ്നേര് അവനെ കുന്തംകൊണ്ടു പിറകോട്ടു വയറ്റത്തു കുത്തി; കുന്തം മറുവശത്തു പുറപ്പെട്ടു; അവന് അവിടെ തന്നെ വീണു മരിച്ചു. അസാഹേല് മരിച്ചുകിടന്നേടത്തു വന്നവര് ഒക്കെയും നിന്നുപോയി.

23. But he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth {rib}, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, {that} as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died, stood still.

24. യോവാബും അബീശായിയും അബ്നോരിനെ പിന്തുടര്ന്നു; അവര് ഗിബെയോന് മരുഭൂമിയിലെ വഴിയരികെ ഗീഹിന്റെ മുമ്പിലുള്ള അമ്മാക്കുന്നില് എത്തിയപ്പോള് സൂര്യന് അസ്തമിച്ചു.

24. Joab also, and Abishai pursued Abner: and the sun went down when they had come to the hill of Ammah, that {lieth} before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

25. ബെന്യാമീന്യര് അബ്നേരിന്റെ അടുക്കല് ഒരേ കൂട്ടമായി കൂടി ഒരു കുന്നിന് മുകളില്നിന്നു.

25. And the children of Benjamin assembled themselves after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of a hill.

26. അപ്പോള് അബ്നേര് യോവാബിനോടുവാള് എന്നും സംഹരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കേണമോ? ഒടുവില് കൈപ്പുണ്ടാകുമെന്നു നീ അറിയുന്നില്ലയോ? സഹോരദന്മാരെ പിന്തുടരുന്നതു മതിയാക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു ജനത്തോടു കല്പിപ്പാന് നീ എത്രത്തോളം താമസിക്കും എന്നു വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു.

26. Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou wilt bid the people return from following their brethren?

27. അതിന്നു യോവാബ്ദൈവത്താണ, നീ പറഞ്ഞില്ലെങ്കില് ജനം രാവിലെ തങ്ങളുടെ സഹോദരന്മാരെ പിന്തുടരാതെ മടങ്ങിപ്പോകുമായിരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

27. And Joab said, {As} God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.

28. ഉടനെ യോവാബ് കാഹളം ഊതിച്ചു, ജനം ഒക്കെയും നിന്നു, യിസ്രായേലിനെ പിന്തുടര്ന്നില്ല പൊരുതതുമില്ല.

28. So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued Israel no more, neither fought they any more.

29. അബ്നേരും അവന്റെ ആളുകളും അന്നു രാത്രിമുഴുവനും അരാബയില്കൂടി നടന്നു യോര്ദ്ദാന് കടന്നു ബിത്രോനില്കൂടി ചെന്നു മഹനയീമില് എത്തി.

29. And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.

30. യോവാബും അബ്നേരിനെ പിന്തുടരുന്നതു വിട്ടു മടങ്ങി, ജനത്തെ ഒക്കെയും ഒന്നിച്ചു കൂട്ടിയപ്പോള് ദാവീദിന്റെ ചേവരകരില് പത്തൊമ്പതുപേരും അസാഹേലും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു.

30. And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had assembled all the people, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men, and Asahel.

31. എന്നാല് ദാവീദിന്റെ ചേവകര് ബെന്യാമീന്യരെയും അബ്നേരിന്റെ ആളുകളെയും തോല്പിക്കയും അവരില് മുന്നൂറ്ററുപതുപേരെ സംഹരിക്കയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.

31. But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, {so that} three hundred and sixty men died.

32. അസാഹേലിനെ അവര് എടുത്തു ബേത്ത്ളേഹെമില് അവന്റെ അപ്പന്റെ കല്ലറയില് അടക്കം ചെയ്തു; യോവാബും അവന്റെ ആളുകളും രാത്രി മുഴുവനും നടന്നു പുലര്ച്ചെക്കു ഹെബ്രോനില് എത്തി.

32. And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulcher of his father, which {was in} Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
