1. ചത്ത ഈച്ച തൈലക്കാരന്റെ തൈലം നാറുമാറാക്കുന്നു; അല്പഭോഷത്വം ജ്ഞാനമാനങ്ങളെക്കാള് ഘനമേറുന്നു.

1. Dead flies make a perfumer's oil ferment and stink; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.

2. ജ്ഞാനിയുടെ ബുദ്ധി അവന്റെ വലത്തുഭാഗത്തും മൂഢന്റെ ബുദ്ധി അവന്റെ ഇടത്തുഭാഗത്തും ഇരിക്കുന്നു.

2. A wise man's heart [goes] to the right, but a fool's heart to the left.

3. ഭോഷന് നടക്കുന്ന വഴിയില് അവന്റെ ബുദ്ധി ക്ഷയിച്ചുപോകുന്നു; താന് ഭോഷന് എന്നു എല്ലാവര്ക്കും വെളിവാക്കും.

3. Even when the fool walks along the road, his heart lacks sense, and he shows everyone he is a fool.

4. അധിപതിയുടെ കോപം നിന്റെ നേരെ പൊങ്ങുന്നു എങ്കില് നീ നിന്റെ സ്ഥലം വിട്ടുമാറരുതു; ക്ഷാന്തി മഹാപാതകങ്ങളെ ചെയ്യാതിരിപ്പാന് കാരണമാകും.

4. If the ruler's anger rises against you, don't leave your place, for calmness puts great offenses to rest.

5. അധിപതിയുടെ പക്കല്നിന്നു പുറപ്പെടുന്ന തെറ്റുപോലെ ഞാന് സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ ഒരു തിന്മ കണ്ടു;

5. There is an evil I have seen under the sun, an error proceeding from the presence of the ruler:

6. മൂഢന്മാര് ശ്രേഷ്ഠപദവിയില് എത്തുകയും ധനവാന്മാര് താണനിലയില് ഇരിക്കയും ചെയ്യുന്നതു തന്നേ.

6. The fool is appointed to great heights, but the rich remain in lowly positions.

7. ദാസന്മാര് കുതിരപ്പുറത്തിരിക്കുന്നതും പ്രഭുക്കന്മാര് ദാസന്മാരെപ്പോലെ കാല്നടയായി നടക്കുന്നതും ഞാന് കണ്ടു.

7. I have seen slaves on horses, but princes walking on the ground like slaves.

8. കുഴി കുഴിക്കുന്നവന് അതില് വീഴും; മതില് പൊളിക്കുന്നവനെ പാമ്പു കടിക്കും.

8. The one who digs a pit may fall into it, and the one who breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.

9. കല്ലു വെട്ടുന്നവന്നു അതുകൊണ്ടു ദണ്ഡം തട്ടും; വിറകു കീറുന്നവന്നു അതിനാല് ആപത്തും വരും.

9. The one who quarries stones may be hurt by them; the one who splits trees may be endangered by them.

10. ഇരിമ്പായുധം മൂര്ച്ചയില്ലാഞ്ഞിട്ടു അതിന്റെ വായ്ത്തല തേക്കാതിരുന്നാല് അവന് അധികം ശക്തി പ്രയോഗിക്കേണ്ടിവരും; ജ്ഞാനമോ, കാര്യസിദ്ധിക്കു ഉപയോഗമുള്ളതാകുന്നു.

10. If the axe is dull, and one does not sharpen its edge, then one must exert more strength; however, the advantage of wisdom is that it brings success.

11. മന്ത്രപ്രയോഗം ചെയ്യുംമുമ്പെ സര്പ്പം കടിച്ചാല് മന്ത്രവാദിയെ വിളിച്ചിട്ടു ഉപകാരമില്ല.

11. If the snake bites before it is charmed, then there is no advantage for the charmer.

12. ജ്ഞാനിയുടെ വായിലെ വാക്കു ലാവണ്യമുള്ളതു; മൂഢന്റെ അധരമോ അവനെത്തന്നേ നശിപ്പിക്കും.

12. The words from the mouth of a wise man are gracious, but the lips of a fool consume him.

13. അവന്റെ വായിലെ വാക്കുകളുടെ ആരംഭം ഭോഷത്വവും അവന്റെ സംസാരത്തിന്റെ അവസാനം വല്ലാത്ത ഭ്രാന്തും തന്നേ.

13. The beginning of the words of his mouth is folly, but the end of his speaking is evil madness.

14. ഭോഷന് വാക്കുകളെ വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു; സംഭവിപ്പാനിരിക്കുന്നതു മനുഷ്യന് അറിയുന്നില്ല; അവന്റെ ശേഷം ഉണ്ടാകുവാനുള്ളതു ആര് അവനെ അറിയിക്കും?

14. Yet the fool multiplies words. No one knows what will happen, and who can tell anyone what will happen after him?

15. പട്ടണത്തിലേക്കു പോകുന്ന വഴി അറിയാത്ത മൂഢന്മാര് തങ്ങളുടെ പ്രയത്നത്താല് ക്ഷീണിച്ചുപോകുന്നു.

15. The struggles of fools weary them, for they don't know how to go to the city.

16. ബാലനായ രാജാവും അതികാലത്തു ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുന്ന പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരും ഉള്ള ദേശമേ, നിനക്കു അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം!

16. Woe to you, land, when your king is a household servant, and your princes feast in the morning.

17. കുലീനപുത്രനായ രാജാവും മദ്യപാനത്തിന്നല്ല ബലത്തിന്നു വേണ്ടി മാത്രം തക്കസമയത്തു ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുന്ന പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരും ഉള്ള ദേശമേ, നിനക്കു ഭാഗ്യം!

17. Blessed are you, land, when your king is a son of nobles and your princes feast at the proper time-- for strength and not for drunkenness.

18. മടിവുകൊണ്ടു മേല്പുര വീണുപോകുന്നു; കൈകളുടെ ആലസ്യംകൊണ്ടു വീടു ചോരുന്നു.

18. Because of laziness the roof caves in, and because of negligent hands the house leaks.

19. സന്തോഷത്തിന്നായിട്ടു വിരുന്നു കഴിക്കുന്നു; വീഞ്ഞു ജീവനെ ആനന്ദിപ്പിക്കുന്നു; ദ്രവ്യമോ സകലത്തിന്നും ഉതകുന്നു.

19. A feast is prepared for laughter, and wine makes life happy, and money is the answer for everything.
