1. യാക്കോബ് തന്റെ വഴിക്കു പോയി; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ദൂതന്മാര് അവന്റെ എതിരെ വന്നു.

1. And Jacob hath gone on his way, and messengers of God come upon him;

2. യാക്കോബ് അവരെ കണ്ടപ്പോള്ഇതു ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സേന എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ആ സ്ഥലത്തിന്നു മഹനയീം എന്നു പേര് ഇട്ടു.

2. and Jacob saith, when he hath seen them, 'This [is] the camp of God;' and he calleth the name of that place 'Two Camps.'

3. അനന്തരം യാക്കോബ് എദോംനാടായ സേയീര്ദേശത്തു തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല് തനിക്കു മുമ്പായി ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചു.

3. And Jacob sendeth messengers before him unto Esau his brother, towards the land of Seir, the field of Edom,

4. അവരോടു കല്പിച്ചതു എന്തെന്നാല്എന്റെ യജമാനനായ ഏശാവിനോടു ഇങ്ങനെ പറവിന് നിന്റെ അടിയാന് യാക്കോബ് ഇപ്രകാരം പറയുന്നുഞാന് ലാബാന്റെ അടുക്കല് പരദേശിയായി പാര്ത്തു ഇന്നുവരെ അവിടെ താമസിച്ചു.

4. and commandeth them, saying, 'Thus do ye say to my lord, to Esau: Thus said thy servant Jacob, With Laban I have sojourned, and I tarry until now;

5. എനിക്കു കാളയും കഴുതയും ആടും ദാസീദാസന്മാരും ഉണ്ടു; നിനക്കു എന്നൊടു കൃപ തോന്നേണ്ടതിന്നാകുന്നു യജമാനനെ അറിയിപ്പാന് ആളയക്കുന്നതു.

5. and I have ox, and ass, flock, and man-servant, and maid-servant, and I send to declare to my lord, to find grace in his eyes.'

6. ദൂതന്മാര് യാക്കോബിന്റെ അടുക്കല് മടങ്ങി വന്നുഞങ്ങള് നിന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല് പോയി വന്നു; അവന് നാനൂറു ആളുമായി നിന്നെ എതിരേല്പാന് വരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

6. And the messengers turn back unto Jacob, saying, 'We came in unto thy brother, unto Esau, and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him;'

7. അപ്പോള് യാക്കോബ് ഏറ്റവും ഭ്രമിച്ചു ഭയവശനായി, തന്നോടു കൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ജനത്തെയും ആടുകളെയും കന്നുകാലികളെയും ഒട്ടകങ്ങളെയും രണ്ടു കൂട്ടമായി വിഭാഗിച്ചു.

7. and Jacob feareth exceedingly, and is distressed, and he divideth the people who [are] with him, and the flock, and the herd, and the camels, into two camps,

8. ഏശാവ് ഒരു കൂട്ടത്തിന്റെ നേരെ വന്നു അതിനെ നശിപ്പിച്ചാല് മറ്റേ കൂട്ടത്തിന്നു ഔടിപ്പോകാമല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. and saith, 'If Esau come in unto the one camp, and have smitten it -- then the camp which is left hath been for an escape.'

9. പിന്നെ യാക്കോബ് പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചതുഎന്റെ പിതാവായ അബ്രാഹാമിന്റെ ദൈവവും എന്റെ പിതാവായ യിസ്ഹാക്കിന്റെ ദൈവവുമായുള്ളോവേ, നിന്റെ ദേശത്തേക്കും നിന്റെ ചാര്ച്ചക്കാരുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കും മടങ്ങിപ്പോക; ഞാന് നിനക്കു നന്മ ചെയ്യുമെന്നു എന്നൊടു അരുളിച്ചെയ്ത യഹോവേ,

9. And Jacob saith, 'God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah who saith unto me, Turn back to thy land, and to thy kindred, and I do good with thee:

10. അടിയനോടു കാണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സകലദയെക്കും സകലവിശ്വസ്തതെക്കും ഞാന് അപാത്രമത്രേ; ഒരു വടിയോടുകൂടെ മാത്രമല്ലോ ഞാന് ഈ യോര്ദ്ദാന് കടന്നതു; ഇപ്പോഴോ ഞാന് രണ്ടു കൂട്ടമായി തീര്ന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.

10. I have been unworthy of all the kind acts, and of all the truth which Thou hast done with thy servant -- for, with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

11. എന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ കയ്യില്നിന്നു എന്നെ രക്ഷിക്കേണമേ; പക്ഷേ അവന് വന്നു എന്നെയും മക്കളോടുകൂടെ തള്ളയെയും നശിപ്പിക്കും എന്നു ഞാന് ഭയപ്പെടുന്നു.

11. 'Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I am fearing him, less he come and have smitten me -- mother beside sons;

12. നീയോഞാന് നിന്നോടു നന്മ ചെയ്യും; നിന്റെ സന്തതിയെ പെരുപ്പംകൊണ്ടു എണ്ണിക്കൂടാത്ത കടല്കരയിലെ മണല്പോലെ ആക്കുമെന്നു അരുളിച്ചെയ്തുവല്ലോ.

12. and Thou -- Thou hast said, I certainly do good with thee, and have set thy seed as the sand of the sea, which is not numbered because of the multitude.'

13. അന്നു രാത്രി അവന് അവിടെ പാര്ത്തു; തന്റെ പക്കല് ഉള്ളതില് തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്നു സമ്മാനമായിട്ടു

13. And he lodgeth there during that night, and taketh from that which is coming into his hand, a present for Esau his brother:

14. ഇരുനൂറു കോലാടിനെയും ഇരുപതു കോലാട്ടുകൊറ്റനെയും ഇരുനൂറു ചെമ്മരിയാടിനെയും ഇരുപതു ചെമ്മരിയാട്ടുകൊറ്റനെയും

14. she-goats two hundred, and he-goats twenty, ewes two hundred, and rams twenty,

15. കറവുള്ള മുപ്പതു ഒട്ടകത്തെയും അവയുടെ കുട്ടികളെയും നാല്പതു പശുവിനെയും പത്തു കാളയെയും ഇരുപതു പെണ്കഴുതയെയും പത്തു കഴുതകൂട്ടിയെയും വേര്തിരിച്ചു.

15. suckling camels and their young ones thirty, cows forty, and bullocks ten, she-asses twenty, and foals ten;

16. തന്റെ ദാസന്മാരുടെ പക്കല് ഔരോ കൂട്ടത്തെപ്രത്യേകം പ്രത്യേകമായി ഏല്പിച്ചു, തന്റെ ദാസന്മാരോടുനിങ്ങള് എനിക്കു മുമ്പായി കടന്നുപോയി അതതു കൂട്ടത്തിന്നു മദ്ധ്യേ ഇടയിടുവിന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

16. and he giveth into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and saith unto his servants, 'Pass over before me, and a space ye do put between drove and drove.'

17. ഒന്നാമതു പോകുന്നവനോടു അവന് എന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവ് നിന്നെ കണ്ടുനീ ആരുടെ ആള്? എവിടെ പോകുന്നു? നിന്റെ മുമ്പില് പോകുന്ന ഇവ ആരുടെ വക എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിന്നോടു ചോദിച്ചാല്

17. And he commandeth the first, saying, 'When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and hath asked thee, saying, Whose [art] thou? and whither goest thou? and whose [are] these before thee?

18. നിന്റെ അടിയാന് യാക്കോബിന്റെ വക ആകുന്നു; ഇതു യജമാനനായ ഏശാവിന്നു അയച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സമ്മാനം; അതാ, അവനും പിന്നാലെ വരുന്നു എന്നു നീ പറയേണം എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു.

18. then thou hast said, Thy servant Jacob's: it [is] a present sent to my lord, to Esau; and lo, he also [is] behind us.'

19. രണ്ടാമത്തവനോടും മൂന്നാമത്തവനോടും കൂട്ടങ്ങളെ നടത്തിക്കൊണ്ടു പോകുന്ന എല്ലാവരോടുംനിങ്ങള് ഏശാവിനെ കാണുമ്പോള് ഇപ്രകാരം അവനോടുപറവിന് ;

19. And he commandeth also the second, also the third, also all who are going after the droves, saying, 'According to this manner do ye speak unto Esau in your finding him,

20. അതാ, നിന്റെ അടിയാന് യാക്കോബ് പിന്നാലെ വരുന്നു എന്നും പറവിന് എന്നു അവന് കല്പിച്ചു. എനിക്കു മുമ്പായിപോകുന്ന സമ്മാനംകൊണ്ടു അവനെ ശാന്തമാക്കീട്ടു പിന്നെ ഞാന് അവന്റെ മുഖം കണ്ടുകൊള്ളാം; പക്ഷേ അവന്നു എന്നോടു ദയ തോന്നുമായിരിക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

20. and ye have said also, Lo, thy servant Jacob [is] behind us;' for he said, 'I pacify his face with the present which is going before me, and afterwards I see his face; it may be he lifteth up my face;'

21. അങ്ങനെ സമ്മാനം അവന്റെ മുമ്പായി പോയി; അവനോ അന്നു രാത്രി കൂട്ടത്തോടുകൂടെ പാര്ത്തു.

21. and the present passeth over before his face, and he hath lodged during that night in the camp.

22. രാത്രിയില് അവന് എഴുന്നേറ്റു. തന്റെ രണ്ടു ഭാര്യമാരെയും രണ്ടു ദാസിമാരെയും പതിനൊന്നു പുത്രന്മാരയും കൂട്ടി യാബ്ബോക് കടവു കടന്നു.

22. And he riseth in that night, and taketh his two wives, and his two maid-servants, and his eleven children, and passeth over the passage of Jabbok;

23. അങ്ങനെ അവന് അവരെ കൂട്ടി ആറ്റിന്നക്കരെ കടത്തി; തനിക്കുള്ളതൊക്കെയും അക്കരെ കടത്തിയശേഷം യാക്കോബ് തനിയേ ശേഷിച്ചു;

23. and he taketh them, and causeth them to pass over the brook, and he causeth that which he hath to pass over.

24. അപ്പോള് ഒരു പുരുഷന് ഉഷസ്സാകുവോളം അവനോടു മല്ലു പിടിച്ചു.

24. And Jacob is left alone, and one wrestleth with him till the ascending of the dawn;

25. അവനെ ജയിക്കയില്ല എന്നു കണ്ടപ്പോള് അവന് അവന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടം തൊട്ടു; ആകയാല് അവനോടു മല്ലുപിടിക്കയില് യാക്കോബിന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടം ഉളുക്കിപ്പോയി.

25. and he seeth that he is not able for him, and he cometh against the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh is disjointed in his wrestling with him;

26. എന്നെ വിടുക; ഉഷസ്സു ഉദിക്കുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞതിന്നുനീ എന്നെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചല്ലാതെ ഞാന് നിന്നെ വിടുകയില്ല എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു.

26. and he saith, 'Send me away, for the dawn hath ascended:' and he saith, 'I send thee not away, except thou hast blessed me.'

27. നിന്റെ പേര് എന്തു എന്നു അവന് അവനോടു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുയാക്കോബ് എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു.

27. And he saith unto him, 'What [is] thy name?' and he saith, 'Jacob.'

28. നീ ദൈവത്തോടും മനുഷ്യരോടും മല്ലുപിടിച്ചു ജയിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു നിന്റെ പേര് ഇനി യാക്കോബ് എന്നല്ല യിസ്രായേല് എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടും എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു.

28. And he saith, 'Thy name is no more called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast been a prince with God and with men, and dost prevail.'

29. യാക്കോബ് അവനോടുനിന്റെ പേര് എനിക്കു പറഞ്ഞുതരേണം എന്നു അപേക്ഷിച്ചുനീ എന്റെ പേര് ചോദിക്കുന്നതു എന്തു എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു, അവിടെവെച്ചു അവനെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

29. And Jacob asketh, and saith, 'Declare, I pray thee, thy name;' and he saith, 'Why [is] this, thou askest for My name?' and He blesseth him there.

30. ഞാന് ദൈവത്തെ മുഖാമുഖമായി കണ്ടിട്ടും എനിക്കു ജീവഹാനി വിന്നില്ല എന്നു യാക്കോബ് പറഞ്ഞു, ആ സ്ഥലത്തിന്നു പെനീയേല് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

30. And Jacob calleth the name of the place Peniel: for 'I have seen God face unto face, and my life is delivered;'

31. അവന് പെനീയേല് കടന്നു പോകുമ്പോള് സൂര്യന് ഉദിച്ചു; എന്നാല് തുടയുടെ ഉളുകൂനിമിത്തം അവന് മുടന്തിനടന്നു.

31. and the sun riseth on him when he hath passed over Penuel, and he is halting on his thigh;

32. അവന് യാക്കോബിന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടത്തിലെ ഞരമ്പു തൊടുകകൊണ്ടു യിസ്രായേല്മക്കള് ഇന്നുവരെയും തുടയുടെ തടത്തിലെ ഞരമ്പു തിന്നാറില്ല.

32. therefore the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew which shrank, which [is] on the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because He came against the hollow of Jacob's thigh, against the sinew which shrank.
