1. Some time later the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king in his place.

2. Then David said, 'I'll show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.' So David sent his emissaries to console Hanun concerning his father. However, when they arrived in the land of the Ammonites,

3. the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun their lord, 'Just because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he's showing respect for your father? Instead, hasn't David sent his emissaries in order to scout out the city, spy on it, and overthrow it?'

4. അപ്പോള് ഹാനൂന് ദാവീദിന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാരെ പിടിച്ചു അവരുടെ താടിയെ പാതി ചിരപ്പിച്ചു അവരുടെ അങ്കികളെ നടുവില് ആസനംവരെ മുറിപ്പിച്ചു അവരെ അയച്ചു.

4. So Hanun took David's emissaries, shaved off half their beards, cut their clothes in half at the hips, and sent them away.

5. When this was reported to David, he sent [someone] to meet them, since they were deeply humiliated. The king said, 'Stay in Jericho until your beards grow back; then return.'

6. When the Ammonites realized they had become repulsive to David, they hired 20,000 foot soldiers from the Arameans of Beth-rehob and Zobah, 1,000 men from the king of Maacah, and 12,000 men from Tob.

7. ദാവീദ് അതു കേട്ടപ്പോള് യോവാബിനെയും ശൂരന്മാരുടെ സകലസൈന്യത്തെയും അയച്ചു.

7. David heard about it and sent Joab and all the fighting men.

8. അമ്മോന്യരും പുറപ്പെട്ടു പട്ടണവാതില്ക്കല് പടെക്കു അണിനിരന്നു; എന്നാല് സോബയിലെയും രെഹോബിലെയും അരാമ്യരും തോബ്യരും മാഖ്യരും തനിച്ചു വെളിന് പ്രദേശത്തായിരുന്നു.

8. The Ammonites marched out and lined up in battle formation at the entrance to the city gate while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were in the field by themselves.

9. When Joab saw that there was a battle line in front of him and another behind him, he chose some men out of all the elite troops of Israel and lined up in battle formation to engage the Arameans.

10. He placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother Abishai who lined up in battle formation to engage the Ammonites.

11. അരാമ്യര് എന്റെ നേരെ പ്രാബല്യം പ്രാപിച്ചാല് നീ എനിക്കു സഹായം ചെയ്യേണം; അമ്മോന്യര് നിന്റെ നേരെ പ്രാബല്യം പ്രാപിച്ചാല് ഞാന് വന്നു നിനക്കു സഹായം ചെയ്യും.

11. If the Arameans are too strong for me,' Joab said, 'then you will be my help. However, if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I'll come to help you.

12. ധൈര്യമായിരിക്ക; നാം നമ്മുടെ ജനത്തിന്നും നമ്മുടെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പട്ടണങ്ങള്ക്കും വേണ്ടി പുരുഷത്വം കാണിക്കുക; യഹോവയോ തനിക്കു ഇഷ്ടമായതു ചെയ്യുമാറാകട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

12. Be strong! We must prove ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD's will be done.'

13. പിന്നെ യോവാബും കൂടെയുള്ള ജനവും അരാമ്യരോടു പടെക്കു അടുത്തു; അവര് അവന്റെ മുമ്പില്നിന്നു ഔടിപ്പോയി.

13. Joab and his troops advanced to fight against the Arameans, and they fled before him.

14. അരാമ്യര് ഔടിപ്പോയി എന്നു കണ്ടപ്പോള് അമ്മോന്യരും അബീശായിയുടെ മുമ്പില്നിന്നു ഔടി പട്ടണത്തില് കടന്നു. യോവാബ് അമ്മോന്യരെ വിട്ടു യെരൂശലേമിലേക്കു മടങ്ങിപ്പോന്നു.

14. When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled before Abishai and entered the city. So Joab withdrew from the attack against the Ammonites and went to Jerusalem.

15. തങ്ങള് യിസ്രായേലിനോടു തോറ്റുപോയി എന്നു അരാമ്യര് കണ്ടിട്ടു അവര് ഒന്നിച്ചുകൂടി.

15. When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they regrouped.

16. ഹദദേസെര് ആളയച്ചു നദിക്കു അക്കരെയുള്ള അരാമ്യരെ വരുത്തി; അവര് ഹേലാമിലേക്കു വന്നു; ഹദദേസെരിന്റെ സേനാപതിയായ ശോബക് അവരുടെ നായകനായിരുന്നു.

16. Hadadezer sent [messengers] to bring the Arameans who were across the Euphrates River, and they came to Helam with Shobach, commander of Hadadezer's army, leading them.

17. അതു ദാവീദിന്നു അറിവുകിട്ടിയപ്പോള് അവന് എല്ലായിസ്രായേല്യരെയും കൂട്ടിവരുത്തി യോര്ദ്ദാന് കടന്നു ഹേലാമില്ചെന്നു. എന്നാറെ അരാമ്യര് ദാവീദിന്റെ നേരെ അണിനിരന്നു പടയേറ്റു.

17. When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and went to Helam. Then the Arameans lined up in formation to engage David in battle and fought against him.

18. അരാമ്യര് യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ മുമ്പില് നിന്നു ഔടിപ്പോയി; ദാവീദ് അരാമ്യരില് എഴുനൂറു തേരാളികളെയും നാല്പതിനായിരം കുതിരപ്പടയാളികളെയും കൊന്നു, അവരുടെ സേനാപതിയായ ശോബക്കിനെയും വെട്ടിക്കൊന്നു.

18. But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed 700 of their charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers. He also struck down Shobach commander of their army, who died there.

19. എന്നാല് ഹദദേസെരിന്റെ ആശ്രിതന്മാരായ സകലരാജാക്കന്മാരും തങ്ങള് യിസ്രായേലിനോടു തോറ്റു എന്നു കണ്ടിട്ടു യിസ്രായേല്യരുമായി സന്ധിചെയ്തു അവരെ സേവിച്ചു. അതില്പിന്നെ അമ്മോന്യര്ക്കും സഹായം ചെയ്വാന് അരാമ്യര് ഭയപ്പെട്ടു.

19. When all the kings who were Hadadezer's subjects saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became their subjects. After this, the Arameans were afraid to ever help the Ammonites again.
