1. പിറ്റെ ആണ്ടില് രാജാക്കന്മാര് യുദ്ധത്തിന്നു പുറപ്പെടുംകാലം ദാവീദ് യോവാബിനെയും അവനോടുകൂടെ തന്റെ ചേവകരെയും എല്ലായിസ്രായേലിനെയും അയച്ചു; അവര് അമ്മോന്യദേശം ശൂന്യമാക്കി രബ്ബാപട്ടണം നിരോധിച്ചു. ദാവീദോ യെരൂശലേമില് തന്നെ താമസിച്ചിരുന്നു.

1. And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth [to battle], that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

2. ഒരുനാള് സന്ധ്യയാകാറായ സമയത്തു ദാവീദ് മെത്തയില് നിന്നു എഴുന്നേറ്റു രാജധാനിയുടെ മാളികമേല് ഉലാവിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോള് ഒരു സ്ത്രീ കുളിക്കുന്നതു മാളികയില് നിന്നു കണ്ടു; ആ സ്ത്രീ അതിസുന്ദരി ആയിരുന്നു.

2. And it came to pass one evening, that David arose from off his bed and walked upon the roof of the king's house, and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself, and the woman [was] very beautiful to look upon.

3. ദാവീദ് ആളയച്ചു ആ സ്ത്രീയെപ്പറ്റി അന്വേഷിപ്പിച്ചു. അവള് എലീയാമിന്റെ മകളും ഹിത്യനായ ഊരിയാവിന്റെ ഭാര്യയുമായ ബത്ത്-ശേബ എന്നു അറിഞ്ഞു.

3. And David sent and enquired after the woman. And [one] said, [Is] not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah, the Hittite?

4. ദാവീദ് ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചു അവളെ വരുത്തി; അവള് അവന്റെ അടുക്കല് വന്നു; അവള്ക്കു ഋതുശുദ്ധി വന്നിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവന് അവളോടുകൂടെ ശയിച്ചു; അവള് തന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു മടങ്ങിപ്പോയി.

4. And David sent messengers and took her, and she came in unto him, and he lay with her. Then she purified herself from her uncleanness, and she returned unto her house.

5. ആ സ്ത്രീ ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു, താന് ഗര്ഭിണി ആയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു ദാവീദിന്നു വര്ത്തമാനം അയച്ചു.

5. And the woman conceived and sent and told David and said, I [am] with child.

6. അപ്പോള് ദാവീദ് ഹിത്യനായ ഊരീയാവെ തന്റെ അടുക്കല് അയപ്പാന് യോവാബിന്നു കല്പന അയച്ചു.

6. Then David sent to Joab, [saying], Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

7. ഊരീയാവു തന്റെ അടുക്കല് വന്നപ്പോള് ദാവീദ് അവനോടു യോവാബിന്റെയും പടജ്ജനത്തിന്റെയും സുഖവര്ത്തമാനവും യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ വസ്തുതയും ചോദിച്ചു.

7. And when Uriah had come unto him, David asked [him] how Joab was and how the people were and how the war prospered.

8. പിന്നെ ദാവീദ് ഊരിയാവോടുനീ വീട്ടില് ചെന്നു കാലുകളെ കഴുകുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ഊരീയാവു രാജധാനിയില്നിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടപ്പോള് രാജാവിന്റെ സമ്മാനം അവന്റെ പിന്നാലെ ചെന്നു.

8. And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and royal food was sent unto him.

9. ഊരീയാവോ തന്റെ വീട്ടില് പോകാതെ യജമാനന്റെ സകലഭൃത്യന്മാരോടുംകൂടെ രാജധാനിയുടെ വാതില്ക്കല് കിടന്നുറിങ്ങി.

9. But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord and did not go down to his house.

10. ഊരീയാവു വീട്ടില് പോയില്ല എന്നറിഞ്ഞപ്പോള് ദാവീദ് ഊരീയാവിനോടുനീ യാത്രയില്നിന്നു വന്നവനല്ലയോ? നിന്റെ വീട്ടില് പോകാതെ ഇരുന്നതു എന്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

10. And when they had told David, saying, Uriah did not go down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Didst thou not come from [thy] journey? Why [then] didst thou not go down to thy house?

11. ഊരീയാവു ദാവീദിനോടുപെട്ടകവും യിസ്രായേലും യെഹൂദയും കൂടാരങ്ങളില് വസിക്കുന്നു; എന്റെ യജമാനനായ യോവാബും യജമാനന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാരും വെളിന് പ്രദേശത്തു പാളയമിറങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്നു; അങ്ങനെയിരിക്കെ ഞാന് ഭക്ഷിപ്പാനും കുടിപ്പാനും എന്റെ ഭാര്യയോടുകൂടെ ശയിപ്പാനും എന്റെ വീട്ടില് കടക്കുമോ? നിന്നാണ, നിന്റെ ജിവനാണ, അതു ഞാന് ചെയ്കയില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

11. And Uriah said unto David, The ark and Israel and Judah abide in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? [By thy] life and [by] the life of thy soul, I will not do this thing.

12. അപ്പോള് ദാവീദ് ഊരീയാവിനോടുനീ ഇന്നും ഇവിടെ താമസിക്ക; നാളെ ഞാന് നിന്നെ പറഞ്ഞയക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ ഊരിയാവു അന്നും യെരൂശലേമില് താമസിച്ചു.

12. And David said to Uriah, Tarry here today also, and tomorrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day and the next day.

13. പിറ്റെന്നാള് ദാവീദ് അവനെ വിളിച്ചു; അവന് അവന്റെ മുമ്പാകെ ഭക്ഷിച്ചു പാനം ചെയ്തു; അവന് അവനെ ലഹരിപിടിപ്പിച്ചു; എങ്കിലും അവന് വീട്ടിലേക്കു പോകാതെ സന്ധ്യെക്കു ചെന്നു യജമാനന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാരോടുകൂടെ തന്റെ വിരിപ്പില് കിടന്നു.

13. And when David had called him, he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord but did not go down to his house.

14. രാവിലെ ദാവീദ് യോവാബിന്നു ഒരു എഴുത്തു എഴുതി ഊരീയാവിന്റെ കയ്യില് കൊടുത്തയച്ചു.

14. And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent [it] by the hand of Uriah.

15. എഴുത്തില്പട കഠിനമായിരിക്കുന്നേടത്തു ഊരീയാവെ മുന്നണിയില് നിര്ത്തി അവന് വെട്ടുകൊണ്ടു മരിക്കത്തക്കവണ്ണം അവനെ വിട്ടു പിന് മാറുവിന് എന്നു എഴുതിയിരുന്നു.

15. And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle and retire from him, that he may be smitten and die.

16. അങ്ങനെ തന്നേ യോവാബ് ആ പട്ടണത്തെ സൂക്ഷിച്ചുനോക്കീട്ടു ശൂരന്മാര് നിലക്കുന്നതായി കണ്ട സ്ഥലത്തു ഊരീയാവെ നിര്ത്തി.

16. And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that the most valiant men [were].

17. പട്ടണക്കാര് പുറപ്പെട്ടു യോവാബിനോടു പട വെട്ടിയപ്പോള് ദാവീദിന്റെ ചേവകരായ പടജ്ജനത്തില് ചിലര് പട്ടുപോയി; ഹിത്യനായ ഊരിയാവും മരിച്ചു.

17. And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and [some] of the people of the servants of David fell, and Uriah the Hittite died also.

18. പിന്നെ യോവാബ് ആ യുദ്ധവര്ത്തമാനം ഒക്കെയും ദാവീദിനോടു അറിയിപ്പാന് ആളയച്ചു.

18. Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war

19. അവന് ദൂതനോടു കല്പിച്ചതു എന്തെന്നാല്നീ യുദ്ധവര്ത്തമാനം ഒക്കെയും രാജാവിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു തീരുമ്പോള് രാജാവിന്റെ കോപം ജ്വലിച്ചു

19. and charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast finished telling the matters of the war unto the king,

20. നിങ്ങള് പട്ടണത്തോടു ഇത്ര അടുത്തുചെന്നു പടവെട്ടിയതു എന്തു? മതിലിന്മേല് നിന്നു അവര് എയ്യുമെന്നു നിങ്ങള്ക്കു അറിഞ്ഞുകൂടയോ?

20. and if the king begins to be angry and he should say unto thee, Why did you approach so near unto the city when ye fought? Did ye not know that which they can throw down from the wall?

21. യെരൂബ്ബേശെത്തിന്റെ മകനായ അബീമേലെക്കിനെ കൊന്നതു ആര്? ഒരു സ്ത്രീ മതിലിന്മേല്നിന്നു തിരിക്കല്ലില്പിള്ള അവന്റെ മേല് ഇട്ടതുകൊണ്ടല്ലേയോ അവന് തേബെസില്വെച്ചു മരിച്ചതു? നിങ്ങള് മതിലിനോടു ഇത്ര അടുത്തുചെന്നതു എന്തു എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിന്നോടു പറഞ്ഞാല്നിന്റെ ഭൃത്യന് ഹിത്യനായ ഊരീയാവും മരിച്ചുപോയി എന്നു പറക.

21. Who smote Abimelech, the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? Why did you go near the wall? Then thou shalt say, Thy servant Uriah, the Hittite, is dead also.

22. ദൂതന് ചെന്നു യോവാബ് പറഞ്ഞയച്ച വര്ത്തമാനമൊക്കെയും ദാവീദിനെ അറിയിച്ചു.

22. So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent him for.

23. ദൂതന് ദാവീദിനോടു പറഞ്ഞതു എന്തെന്നാല്ആ കൂട്ടര് പ്രാബല്യം പ്രാപിച്ചു വെളിന് പ്രദേശത്തേക്കു ഞങ്ങളുടെ നേരെ പുറപ്പെട്ടു വന്നതിനാല് ഞങ്ങള് പട്ടണവാതില്ക്കലോളം അവരെ പിന്തുടര്ന്നടുത്തുപോയി.

23. And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us and came out unto us into the field, and we made them retreat unto the entering of the gate.

24. അപ്പോള് വില്ലാളികള് മതിലിന്മേല്നിന്നു നിന്റെ ചേവകരെ എയ്തു, രാജാവിന്റെ ചേവകരില് ചിലര് പട്ടുപോയി, നിന്റെ ഭൃത്യന് ഹിത്യനായ ഊരീയാവും മരിച്ചു.

24. And the archers shot from off the wall upon thy servants, and [some] of the king's servants are dead, and thy servant Uriah, the Hittite, is dead also.

25. അതിന്നു ദാവീദ് ദൂതനോടുഈ കാര്യത്തില് വ്യസനം തോന്നരുതു; വാള് അങ്ങും ഇങ്ങും നാശം ചെയ്യും; പട്ടണത്തിന്റെ നേരെ ശക്തിയോടെ പൊരുതു അതിനെ നശിപ്പിച്ചു കളക എന്നു നീ യോവാബിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു അവനെ ധൈര്യപ്പെടുത്തേണം എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു.

25. Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devours one as well as another; strengthen the battle against the city until it is overthrown and encourage thou him.

26. ഊരീയാവിന്റെ ഭാര്യ തന്റെ ഭര്ത്താവായ ഊരീയാവു മരിച്ചുപോയി എന്നു കേട്ടപ്പോള് ഭര്ത്താവിനെക്കുറിച്ചു വിലപിച്ചു.

26. And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah, her husband, was dead, she mourned for her husband.

27. വിലാപകാലം കഴിഞ്ഞശേഷം ദാവീദ് ആളയച്ചു അവളെ അരമനയില് വരുത്തി; അവള് അവന്റെ ഭാര്യയായി, അവന്നു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു. എന്നാല് ദാവീദ് ചെയ്തതു യഹോവേക്കു അനിഷ്ടമായിരുന്നു.

27. And when the mourning was past, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and gave birth to a son unto him. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.:
