1. ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് യിസ്രായേലിനോടു യുദ്ധം ചെയ്തു; യിസ്രായേല്യരോ ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ മുമ്പില്നിന്നു ഔടി ഗില്ബോവപര്വ്വതത്തില് നിഹതന്മാരായി വീണു.

1. Now the Philistines were at war with Israel; the Israelites fled before the Philistines, and a number of them fell, slain on Mount Gilboa.

2. ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് ശൌലിനെയും മക്കളെയും പിന്തേര്ന്നു ചെന്നു; ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് ശൌലിന്റെ മക്കളായ യോനാഥാനെയും അബീനാദാബിനെയും മല്ക്കീശൂവയെയും വെട്ടിക്കൊന്നു.

2. The Philistines pressed hard after Saul and his sons. When the Philistines had killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, sons of Saul,

3. പട ശൌലിന്റെ നേരെ ഏറ്റവും മുറുകി, വില്ലാളികള് അവനെ കണ്ടു, വില്ലാളികളാല് അവന് വിഷമത്തിലായി.

3. the whole fury of the battle descended upon Saul. Then the archers found him, and wounded him with their arrows.

4. അപ്പോള് ശൌല് തന്റെ ആയുധവാഹകനോടുഈ അഗ്രചര്മ്മികള് വന്നു എന്നെ അവമാനിക്കാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു നിന്റെ വാള് ഊരി എന്നെ കുത്തുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അവന്റെ ആയുധവാഹകന് ഏറ്റവും ഭയപ്പെട്ടതുകൊണ്ടു അവന്നു മനസ്സുവന്നില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ടു ശൌല് ഒരു വാള് പിടിച്ചു അതിന്മേല് വീണു.

4. Saul said to his armor-bearer, 'Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, that these uncircumcised may not come and maltreat me.' But the armor-bearer, in great fear, refused. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it;

5. ശൌല് മരിച്ചു എന്നു അവന്റെ ആയുധവാഹകന് കണ്ടപ്പോള് താനും അങ്ങനെ തന്നേ തന്റെ വാളിന്മേല് വീണു മരിച്ചു.

5. and seeing him dead, the armor-bearer also fell on his sword and died.

6. ഇങ്ങനെ ശൌലും മൂന്നു മക്കളും അവന്റെ ഭവനമൊക്കെയും ഒരുമിച്ചു മരിച്ചു.

6. Thus, with Saul and his three sons, his whole house died at one time.

7. അവര് ഔടിപ്പോയി; ശൌലും മക്കളും മരിച്ചു എന്നു താഴ്വരയിലുള്ള യിസ്രായേല്യരൊക്കെയും കണ്ടിട്ടു അവര് തങ്ങളുടെ പട്ടണങ്ങളെ വിട്ടു ഔടിപ്പോയി; ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് വന്നു അവയില് പാര്ത്തു.

7. When all the Israelites who were in the valley saw that Saul and his sons had died in the rout, they left their cities and fled; thereupon the Philistines came and occupied them.

8. പിറ്റെന്നാള് ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് നിഹതന്മാരുടെ വസ്ത്രം ഉരിവാന് വന്നപ്പോള് ശൌലും പുത്രന്മാരും ഗില്ബോവപര്വ്വതത്തില് വീണു കിടക്കുന്നതു കണ്ടു.

8. On the following day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons where they had fallen on Mount Gilboa.

9. അവര് അവന്റെ വസ്ത്രാദികള് ഉരിഞ്ഞു അവന്റെ തലയും ആയുധവര്ഗ്ഗവും എടുത്തു തങ്ങളുടെ വിഗ്രഹക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലും ജനത്തിന്റെ ഇടയിലും വര്ത്തമാനം അറിയിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു ഫെലിസ്ത്യദേശത്തെല്ലാടവും ആളയച്ചു.

9. They stripped him, cut off his head, and took his armor; these they sent throughout the land of the Philistines to convey the good news to their idols and their people.

10. അവന്റെ ആയുധവര്ഗ്ഗം അവര് തങ്ങളുടെ ദേവന്റെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തില് വെച്ചു; അവന്റെ തലയെ ദാഗോന്റെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലും തറെച്ചു.

10. His armor they put in the house of their gods, but his skull they impaled on the temple of Dagon.

11. ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് ശൌലിനോടു ചെയ്തതൊക്കെയും ഗിലെയാദിലെ യാബേശ് മുഴുവനും കേട്ടപ്പോള്

11. When all the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead had heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,

12. ശൂരന്മാരെല്ലാവരും പുറപ്പെട്ടു ശൌലിന്റെ ശവവും അവന്റെ പുത്രന്മാരുടെ ശവങ്ങളും എടുത്തു യാബേശിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടുവന്നു; അവരുടെ അസ്ഥികളെ യാബേശിലെ കരുവേലകത്തിന് കീഴില് കുഴിച്ചിട്ടു ഏഴു ദിവസം ഉപവസിച്ചു.

12. its warriors rose to a man, recovered the bodies of Saul and his sons, and brought them to Jabesh. They buried their bones under the oak of Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

13. ഇങ്ങനെ ശൌല് യഹോവയോടു ചെയ്ത അതിക്രമം ഹേതുവായും യഹോവയുടെ വചനം പ്രമാണിക്കായ്കയാലും വെളിച്ചപ്പാടത്തിയോടു അരുളപ്പാടു ചോദിച്ചതിനാലും മരിക്കേണ്ടിവന്നു.

13. Thus Saul died because of his rebellion against the LORD in disobeying his command, and also because he had sought counsel of a necromancer,

14. അവന് യഹോവയോടു അരുളപ്പാടു ചോദിക്കായ്കയാല് അവന് അവനെ കൊന്നു രാജത്വം യിശ്ശായിയുടെ മകനായ ദാവീദിന്നു കൊടുത്തു.

14. and had not rather inquired of the LORD. Therefore the LORD slew him, and transferred his kingdom to David, the son of Jesse.
