1. അന്നു ജനം കേള്ക്കെ മോശെയുടെ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചതില് അമ്മോന്യരും മോവാബ്യരും ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സഭയില് ഒരു നാളും പ്രവേശിക്കരുതു;

1. On that day they read in the Book of Moses in the audience of the people, and therein was found written that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God, ever,

2. അവര് അപ്പവും വെള്ളവുംകൊണ്ടു യിസ്രായേല്മക്കളെ എതിരേറ്റുവരാതെ അവരെ ശപിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവര്ക്കും വിരോധമായി ബിലെയാമിനെ കൂലിക്കു വിളിച്ചു; എങ്കിലും നമ്മുടെ ദൈവം ആ ശാപത്തെ അനുഗ്രഹമാക്കി എന്നു എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നതു കണ്ടു.

2. because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them. However that be, our God turned the curse into a blessing.

3. ആ ന്യായപ്രമാണം കേട്ടപ്പോള് അവര് സമ്മിശ്രജാതികളെ ഒക്കെയും യിസ്രായേലില്നിന്നു വേറുപിരിച്ചു.

3. Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

4. അതിന്നു മുമ്പെ തന്നേ നമ്മുടെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ആലയത്തിലെ അറകള്ക്കു മേല്വിചാരകനായി നിയമിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന എല്യാശീബ് പുരോഹിതന് തോബീയാവിന്റെ ബന്ധുവായിരുന്നതിനാല് അവന്നു ഒരു വലിയ അറ ഒരുക്കിക്കൊടുത്തിരുന്നു.

4. And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobiah.

5. മുമ്പെ അവിടെ ഭോജനയാഗം, കുന്തുരുക്കം, ഉപകരണങ്ങള് എന്നിവയും ലേവ്യര്ക്കും സംഗീതക്കാര്ക്കും വാതില്കാവല്ക്കാര്ക്കും വേണ്ടി നിയമിച്ച ധാന്യം, വീഞ്ഞു, എണ്ണ, എന്നിവയുടെ ദശാംശവും പുരോഹിതന്മാര്ക്കുംള്ള ഉദര്ച്ചാര്പ്പണങ്ങളും വെച്ചിരുന്നു.

5. And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where previously they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense and the vessels and the tithes of the corn, the new wine and the oil, which were commanded to be given to the Levites and the singers and the gatekeepers, and the offerings of the priests.

6. ഈ കാലത്തൊക്കെയും ഞാന് യെരൂശലേമില് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ലബാബേല് രാജാവായ അര്ത്ഥഹ് ശഷ്ടാവിന്റെ മുപ്പത്തിരണ്ടാം ആണ്ടില് ഞാന് രാജാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല് പോയിരുന്നു; കുറെനാള് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടു

6. But in all this time I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I came unto the king, and after certain days I obtained leave from the king.

7. ഞാന് രാജാവിനോടു അനുവാദം വാങ്ങി യെരൂശലേമിലേക്കു വന്നാറെ എല്യാശീബ് തോബീയാവിന്നു ദൈവാലയത്തിന്റെ പ്രാകാരങ്ങളില് ഒരു അറ ഒരുക്കിക്കൊടുത്തതിനാല് ചെയ്തദോഷം ഞാന് അറിഞ്ഞു.

7. And I came to Jerusalem and learned of the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

8. അതു എനിക്കു അത്യന്തം വ്യസനമായതുകൊണ്ടു ഞാന് തോബീയാവിന്റെ വീട്ടുസാമാനമൊക്കെയും അറയില്നിന്നു പുറത്തു എറിഞ്ഞുകളഞ്ഞു.

8. And it grieved me sore; therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.

9. പിന്നെ ഞാന് കല്പിച്ചിട്ടു അവര് ആ അറകളെ ശുദ്ധീകരിച്ചു; ദൈവാലയത്തിലെ ഉപകരണങ്ങളും ഭോജനയാഗവും കുന്തുരുക്കവും ഞാന് വീണ്ടും അവിടെ വരുത്തി.

9. Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers; and thither I brought back the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.

10. ലേവ്യര്ക്കും ഉപജീവനം കൊടുക്കായ്കയാല് വേല ചെയ്യുന്ന ലേവ്യരും സംഗീതക്കാരും ഔരോരുത്തന് താന്താന്റെ നിലത്തിലേക്കു പൊയ്ക്കളഞ്ഞു എന്നു ഞാന് അറിഞ്ഞു

10. And I perceived that the portions for the Levites had not been given them; for the Levites and the singers who did the work had fled every one to his field.

11. പ്രമാണികളെ ശാസിച്ചുദൈവാലയത്തെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചുകളഞ്ഞതു എന്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു അവരെ കൂട്ടി വരുത്തി അവരുടെ സ്ഥാനത്തു നിര്ത്തി.

11. Then I contended with the rulers and said, 'Why is the house of God forsaken?' And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

12. പിന്നെ എല്ലായെഹൂദന്മാരും ധാന്യം, വീഞ്ഞു, എണ്ണ എന്നിവയുടെ ദശാംശം ഭണ്ഡാരഗൃഹങ്ങളിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടുവന്നു.

12. Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the storehouses.

13. ഞാന് ശേലെമ്യാപുരോഹിതനെയും സാദോക് ശാസ്ത്രിയെയും ലേവ്യരില് പെദായാവെയും ഇവര്ക്കും സഹായിയായിട്ടു മത്ഥന്യാവിന്റെ മകനായ സക്കൂരിന്റെ മകന് ഹാനാനെയും ഭണ്ഡാരഗൃഹങ്ങളുടെ മേല്വിചാരകന്മാരായി നിയമിച്ചു; അവരെ വിശ്വസ്തരെന്നു എണ്ണിയിരുന്നു; തങ്ങളുടെ സഹോദരന്മാര്ക്കും പങ്കിട്ടുകൊടുക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു അവരുടെ ഉദ്യോഗം.

13. And I made treasurers over the storehouses: Shelemiah the priest and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah; and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.

14. എന്റെ ദൈവമേ, ഇതു എനിക്കായി ഔര്ക്കേണമേ; ഞാന് എന്റെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ആലയത്തിന്നും അതിലെ ശുശ്രൂഷെക്കും വേണ്ടി ചെയ്ത എന്റെ സല്പ്രവൃത്തികളെ മായിച്ചുകളയരുതേ.

14. Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for the offices thereof.

15. ആ കാലത്തു യെഹൂദയില് ചിലര് ശബ്ബത്തില് മുന്തിരിച്ചകൂ ചവിട്ടുന്നതും കറ്റ കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നതും കഴുതപ്പുറത്തു ചുമടുകയറ്റുന്നതും ശബ്ബത്തില് വീഞ്ഞു, മുന്തിരിപ്പഴം, അത്തിപ്പഴം മുതലായ ചുമടെല്ലാം യെരൂശലേമിലേക്കു ചുമന്നുകൊണ്ടു വരുന്നതും കണ്ടു; അവര് ഭക്ഷണസാധനം വിലക്കുന്ന ദിവസത്തില് ഞാന് അവരെ പ്രബോധിപ്പിച്ചു.

15. In those days I saw in Judah some treading of wine presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves and loading them on asses, as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I testified against them as to the day wherein they sold victuals.

16. സോര്യ്യരും അവിടെ പാര്ത്തു മത്സ്യവും പല ചരക്കും കൊണ്ടുവന്നു ശബ്ബത്തില് യെഹൂദ്യര്ക്കും യെരൂശലേമിലും വിറ്റുപോന്നു.

16. There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, who brought fish and all manner of wares, and sold on the Sabbath unto the children of Judah and in Jerusalem.

17. അതുകൊണ്ടു ഞാന് യെഹൂദാശ്രേഷ്ഠന്മാരെ ശാസിച്ചു; നിങ്ങള് ശബ്ബത്തുനാള് അശുദ്ധമാക്കി ഇങ്ങനെ ദോഷം ചെയ്യുന്നതെന്തു?

17. Then I contended with the nobles of Judah and said unto them, 'What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the Sabbath day?

18. നിങ്ങളുടെ പിതാക്കന്മാര് ഇങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തതിനാലല്ലയോ നമ്മുടെ ദൈവം നമ്മുടെ മേലും ഈ നഗരത്തിന്മേലും ഈ അനര്ത്ഥം ഒക്കെയും വരുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നതു? എന്നാല് നിങ്ങള് ശബ്ബത്തിനെ അശുദ്ധമാക്കുന്നതിനാല് യിസ്രായേലിന്മേല് ഉള്ള ക്രോധം വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു എന്നു അവരോടു പറഞ്ഞു.

18. Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us and upon this city? Yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the Sabbath.'

19. പിന്നെ ശബ്ബത്തിന്നു മുമ്പെ യെരൂശലേം നഗരവാതിലുകളില് ഇരുട്ടായിത്തുടങ്ങുമ്പോള് വാതിലുകള് അടെപ്പാനും ശബ്ബത്ത് കഴിയുംവരെ അവ തുറക്കാതിരിപ്പാനും ഞാന് കല്പിച്ചു; ശബ്ബത്തുനാളില് ഒരു ചുമടും അകത്തു കടത്താതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു വാതിലുകള്ക്കരികെ എന്റെ ആളുകളില് ചിലരെ നിര്ത്തി.

19. And it came to pass, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, that I commanded that the gates should be shut,and charged that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath; and some of my servants I set at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the Sabbath day.

20. അതുകൊണ്ടു കച്ചവടക്കാരും പലചരകൂ വിലക്കുന്നവരും ഒന്നു രണ്ടു പ്രാവശ്യം യെരൂശലേമിന്നു പുറത്തു രാപാര്ത്തു.

20. So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice.

21. ആകയാല് ഞാന് അവരെ പ്രബോധിപ്പിച്ചുനിങ്ങള് മതിലിന്നരികെ രാപാര്ക്കുംന്നതെന്തു? നിങ്ങള് ഇനിയും അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്താല് ഞാന് നിങ്ങളെ പിടിക്കും എന്നു അവരോടു പറഞ്ഞു. ആ കാലംമുതല് അവര് ശബ്ബത്തില് വരാതെയിരുന്നു.

21. Then I testified against them and said unto them, 'Why lodge ye about the wall? If ye do so again, I will lay hands on you.' From that time forth they came no more on the Sabbath.

22. ലേവ്യരോടു ഞാന് ശബ്ബത്തുനാളിനെ വിശുദ്ധീകരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു തങ്ങളെത്തന്നേ വിശുദ്ധീകരിക്കയും വന്നു വാതിലുകളെ കാക്കുകയും ചെയ്വാന് കല്പിച്ചു. എന്റെ ദൈവമേ, ഇതുവും എനിക്കായി ഔര്ത്തു നിന്റെ മഹാദയപ്രകാരം എന്നോടു കനിവു തോന്നേണമേ.

22. And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of Thy mercy.

23. ആ കാലത്തു ഞാന് അസ്തോദ്യരും അമ്മോന്യരും മോവാബ്യരും ആയ സ്ത്രീകളെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ച യെഹൂദന്മാരെ കണ്ടു.

23. In those days also I saw Jews who had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab;

24. അവരുടെ മക്കള് പാതി അസ്തോദ്യഭാഷ സംസാരിച്ചു; അവര് അതതു ജാതിയുടെ ഭാഷയല്ലാതെ യെഹൂദ്യഭാഷ സംസാരിപ്പാന് അറിഞ്ഞില്ല.

24. and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people.

25. അവരെ ഞാന് ശാസിച്ചു ശപിച്ചു അവരില് ചിലരെ അടിച്ചു അവരുടെ തലമുടി പറിച്ചു; നിങ്ങളുടെ പുത്രിമാരെ അവരുടെ പുത്രന്മാര്ക്കും കൊടുക്കരുതു; അവരുടെ പുത്രിമാരെ നിങ്ങളുടെ പുത്രന്മാര്ക്കോ നിങ്ങള്ക്കോ എടുക്കയുമരുതു എന്നു ആജ്ഞാപിച്ചു അവരെക്കൊണ്ടു ദൈവനാമത്തില് സത്യം ചെയ്യിച്ചു.

25. And I contended with them and cursed them, and smote certain of them and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, 'Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons or for yourselves.

26. യിസ്രായേല്രാജാവായ ശലോമോന് ഇതിനാല് പാപം ചെയ്തില്ലയോ? അവനെപ്പോലെ ഒരു രാജാവു അനേകംജാതികളുടെ ഇടയില് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല; അവന് തന്റെ ദൈവത്തിന്നു പ്രിയനായിരുന്നതിനാല് ദൈവം അവനെ എല്ലായിസ്രായേലിന്നും രാജാവാക്കി; എങ്കിലും അവനെയും അന്യജാതിക്കാരത്തികളായ ഭാര്യമാര് വശീകരിച്ചു പാപം ചെയ്യിച്ചുവല്ലോ.

26. Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did women from other lands cause to sin.

27. നിങ്ങള് അന്യജാതിക്കാരത്തികളെ വിവാഹം കഴിക്കുന്നതിനാല് നമ്മുടെ ദൈവത്തോടു ദ്രോഹിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു ഈ വലിയ ദോഷം ഒക്കെയും ചെയ്വാന് തക്കവണ്ണം ഞങ്ങള് നിങ്ങളെ സമ്മതിക്കുമോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

27. Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying foreign wives?'

28. യോയാദയുടെ പുത്രന്മാരില് മഹാപുരോഹിതനായ എല്യാശീബിന്റെ മകന് ഹോരോന്യനായ സന് ബല്ലത്തിന്റെ മരുമകന് ആയിരുന്നു; അതുകൊണ്ടു ഞാന് അവനെ എന്റെ അടുക്കല്നിന്നു ഔടിച്ചുകളഞ്ഞു.

28. And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I chased him from me.

29. എന്റെ ദൈവമേ, അവര് പൌരോഹിത്യത്തെയും പൌരോഹിത്യത്തിന്റെയും ലേവ്യരുടെയും നിയമത്തെയും മലിനമാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നതു അവര്ക്കും കണക്കിടേണമേ.

29. Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.

30. ഇങ്ങനെ ഞാന് അന്യമായതൊക്കെയും നീക്കി അവരെ ശുദ്ധീകരിക്കയും പുരോഹിതന്മാര്ക്കും ലേവ്യര്ക്കും ഔരോരുത്തന്നു താന്താന്റെ വേലയില് ശുശ്രൂഷക്രമവും നിശ്ചിതസമയങ്ങള്ക്കു വിറകുവഴിപാടും

30. Thus I cleansed them from all strangers, and appointed the watches of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business,

31. ആദ്യഫലവും നിയമിക്കയും ചെയ്തു. എന്റെ ദൈവമേ, ഇതു എനിക്കു നന്മെക്കായിട്ടു ഔര്ക്കേണമേ.

31. and for the wood offering at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
