1. ചത്ത ഈച്ച തൈലക്കാരന്റെ തൈലം നാറുമാറാക്കുന്നു; അല്പഭോഷത്വം ജ്ഞാനമാനങ്ങളെക്കാള് ഘനമേറുന്നു.

1. One dead fly can spoil the scent-maker's oil: a grain of stupidity outweighs wisdom and glory.

2. ജ്ഞാനിയുടെ ബുദ്ധി അവന്റെ വലത്തുഭാഗത്തും മൂഢന്റെ ബുദ്ധി അവന്റെ ഇടത്തുഭാഗത്തും ഇരിക്കുന്നു.

2. The sage's heart leads him aright, the fool's leads him astray.

3. ഭോഷന് നടക്കുന്ന വഴിയില് അവന്റെ ബുദ്ധി ക്ഷയിച്ചുപോകുന്നു; താന് ഭോഷന് എന്നു എല്ലാവര്ക്കും വെളിവാക്കും.

3. A fool walks down the road, he has no wit -- and everyone remarks, 'How silly he is!'

4. അധിപതിയുടെ കോപം നിന്റെ നേരെ പൊങ്ങുന്നു എങ്കില് നീ നിന്റെ സ്ഥലം വിട്ടുമാറരുതു; ക്ഷാന്തി മഹാപാതകങ്ങളെ ചെയ്യാതിരിപ്പാന് കാരണമാകും.

4. If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post; composure mitigates grave offences.

5. അധിപതിയുടെ പക്കല്നിന്നു പുറപ്പെടുന്ന തെറ്റുപോലെ ഞാന് സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ ഒരു തിന്മ കണ്ടു;

5. One evil I observe under the sun: the sort of misjudgement to which rulers are prone-

6. മൂഢന്മാര് ശ്രേഷ്ഠപദവിയില് എത്തുകയും ധനവാന്മാര് താണനിലയില് ഇരിക്കയും ചെയ്യുന്നതു തന്നേ.

6. folly promoted to the top and the rich taking the lowest place.

7. ദാസന്മാര് കുതിരപ്പുറത്തിരിക്കുന്നതും പ്രഭുക്കന്മാര് ദാസന്മാരെപ്പോലെ കാല്നടയായി നടക്കുന്നതും ഞാന് കണ്ടു.

7. I see slaves riding on horses and princes on foot like slaves.

8. കുഴി കുഴിക്കുന്നവന് അതില് വീഴും; മതില് പൊളിക്കുന്നവനെ പാമ്പു കടിക്കും.

8. He who digs a pit falls into it, he who undermines a wall gets bitten by a snake,

9. കല്ലു വെട്ടുന്നവന്നു അതുകൊണ്ടു ദണ്ഡം തട്ടും; വിറകു കീറുന്നവന്നു അതിനാല് ആപത്തും വരും.

9. he who quarries stones gets hurt by them, he who chops wood takes a risk from it.

10. ഇരിമ്പായുധം മൂര്ച്ചയില്ലാഞ്ഞിട്ടു അതിന്റെ വായ്ത്തല തേക്കാതിരുന്നാല് അവന് അധികം ശക്തി പ്രയോഗിക്കേണ്ടിവരും; ജ്ഞാനമോ, കാര്യസിദ്ധിക്കു ഉപയോഗമുള്ളതാകുന്നു.

10. If, for want of sharpening, the blade is blunt, you have to work twice as hard; but it is the outcome that makes wisdom rewarding.

11. മന്ത്രപ്രയോഗം ചെയ്യുംമുമ്പെ സര്പ്പം കടിച്ചാല് മന്ത്രവാദിയെ വിളിച്ചിട്ടു ഉപകാരമില്ല.

11. If, for want of charming, the snake bites, the snake-charmer gets nothing out of it.

12. ജ്ഞാനിയുടെ വായിലെ വാക്കു ലാവണ്യമുള്ളതു; മൂഢന്റെ അധരമോ അവനെത്തന്നേ നശിപ്പിക്കും.

12. The sayings of a sage give pleasure, what a fool says procures his own ruin:

13. അവന്റെ വായിലെ വാക്കുകളുടെ ആരംഭം ഭോഷത്വവും അവന്റെ സംസാരത്തിന്റെ അവസാനം വല്ലാത്ത ഭ്രാന്തും തന്നേ.

13. his words have their origin in stupidity and their ending in treacherous folly.

14. ഭോഷന് വാക്കുകളെ വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു; സംഭവിപ്പാനിരിക്കുന്നതു മനുഷ്യന് അറിയുന്നില്ല; അവന്റെ ശേഷം ഉണ്ടാകുവാനുള്ളതു ആര് അവനെ അറിയിക്കും?

14. A fool talks a great deal, but none of us in fact can tell the future; what will happen after us, who can tell?

15. പട്ടണത്തിലേക്കു പോകുന്ന വഴി അറിയാത്ത മൂഢന്മാര് തങ്ങളുടെ പ്രയത്നത്താല് ക്ഷീണിച്ചുപോകുന്നു.

15. A fool finds hard work very tiring, he cannot even find his own way into town.

16. ബാലനായ രാജാവും അതികാലത്തു ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുന്ന പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരും ഉള്ള ദേശമേ, നിനക്കു അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം!

16. Woe to you, country with a lad for king, and where princes start feasting in the morning!

17. കുലീനപുത്രനായ രാജാവും മദ്യപാനത്തിന്നല്ല ബലത്തിന്നു വേണ്ടി മാത്രം തക്കസമയത്തു ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുന്ന പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരും ഉള്ള ദേശമേ, നിനക്കു ഭാഗ്യം!

17. Happy the land whose king is nobly born, where princes eat at a respectable hour to keep themselves strong and not merely to revel!

18. മടിവുകൊണ്ടു മേല്പുര വീണുപോകുന്നു; കൈകളുടെ ആലസ്യംകൊണ്ടു വീടു ചോരുന്നു.

18. Thanks to idleness, the roof-tree gives way, thanks to carelessness, the house lets in the rain.

19. സന്തോഷത്തിന്നായിട്ടു വിരുന്നു കഴിക്കുന്നു; വീഞ്ഞു ജീവനെ ആനന്ദിപ്പിക്കുന്നു; ദ്രവ്യമോ സകലത്തിന്നും ഉതകുന്നു.

19. We give parties to enjoy ourselves, wine makes us cheerful and money has an answer for everything.
