1. യാക്കോബ് തന്റെ വഴിക്കു പോയി; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ദൂതന്മാര് അവന്റെ എതിരെ വന്നു.

1. Early the next morning, Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters goodbye; then he set out on his journey back home,

2. യാക്കോബ് അവരെ കണ്ടപ്പോള്ഇതു ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സേന എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ആ സ്ഥലത്തിന്നു മഹനയീം എന്നു പേര് ഇട്ടു.

2. while Jacob continued on his own way. Then God's messengers encountered Jacob.

3. അനന്തരം യാക്കോബ് എദോംനാടായ സേയീര്ദേശത്തു തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല് തനിക്കു മുമ്പായി ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചു.

3. When he saw them he said, 'This is God's encampment.' So he named that place Mahanaim.

4. അവരോടു കല്പിച്ചതു എന്തെന്നാല്എന്റെ യജമാനനായ ഏശാവിനോടു ഇങ്ങനെ പറവിന് നിന്റെ അടിയാന് യാക്കോബ് ഇപ്രകാരം പറയുന്നുഞാന് ലാബാന്റെ അടുക്കല് പരദേശിയായി പാര്ത്തു ഇന്നുവരെ അവിടെ താമസിച്ചു.

4. Jacob sent messengers ahead to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom,

5. എനിക്കു കാളയും കഴുതയും ആടും ദാസീദാസന്മാരും ഉണ്ടു; നിനക്കു എന്നൊടു കൃപ തോന്നേണ്ടതിന്നാകുന്നു യജമാനനെ അറിയിപ്പാന് ആളയക്കുന്നതു.

5. with this message: 'Thus shall you say to my lord Esau: 'Your servant Jacob speaks as follows: I have been staying with Laban and have been detained there until now.

6. ദൂതന്മാര് യാക്കോബിന്റെ അടുക്കല് മടങ്ങി വന്നുഞങ്ങള് നിന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല് പോയി വന്നു; അവന് നാനൂറു ആളുമായി നിന്നെ എതിരേല്പാന് വരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

6. I own cattle, asses and sheep, as well as male and female servants. I am sending my lord this information in the hope of gaining your favor.''

7. അപ്പോള് യാക്കോബ് ഏറ്റവും ഭ്രമിച്ചു ഭയവശനായി, തന്നോടു കൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ജനത്തെയും ആടുകളെയും കന്നുകാലികളെയും ഒട്ടകങ്ങളെയും രണ്ടു കൂട്ടമായി വിഭാഗിച്ചു.

7. When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, 'We reached your brother Esau. He is now coming to meet you, accompanied by four hundred men.'

8. ഏശാവ് ഒരു കൂട്ടത്തിന്റെ നേരെ വന്നു അതിനെ നശിപ്പിച്ചാല് മറ്റേ കൂട്ടത്തിന്നു ഔടിപ്പോകാമല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. Jacob was very much frightened. In his anxiety, he divided the people who were with him, as well as his flocks, herds and camels, into two camps.

9. പിന്നെ യാക്കോബ് പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചതുഎന്റെ പിതാവായ അബ്രാഹാമിന്റെ ദൈവവും എന്റെ പിതാവായ യിസ്ഹാക്കിന്റെ ദൈവവുമായുള്ളോവേ, നിന്റെ ദേശത്തേക്കും നിന്റെ ചാര്ച്ചക്കാരുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കും മടങ്ങിപ്പോക; ഞാന് നിനക്കു നന്മ ചെയ്യുമെന്നു എന്നൊടു അരുളിച്ചെയ്ത യഹോവേ,

9. 'If Esau should attack and overwhelm one camp,' he reasoned, 'the remaining camp may still survive.'

10. അടിയനോടു കാണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സകലദയെക്കും സകലവിശ്വസ്തതെക്കും ഞാന് അപാത്രമത്രേ; ഒരു വടിയോടുകൂടെ മാത്രമല്ലോ ഞാന് ഈ യോര്ദ്ദാന് കടന്നതു; ഇപ്പോഴോ ഞാന് രണ്ടു കൂട്ടമായി തീര്ന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.

10. Then he prayed: 'O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac! You told me, O LORD, 'Go back to the land of your birth, and I will be good to you.'

11. എന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ കയ്യില്നിന്നു എന്നെ രക്ഷിക്കേണമേ; പക്ഷേ അവന് വന്നു എന്നെയും മക്കളോടുകൂടെ തള്ളയെയും നശിപ്പിക്കും എന്നു ഞാന് ഭയപ്പെടുന്നു.

11. I am unworthy of all the acts of kindness that you have loyally performed for your servant: although I crossed the Jordan here with nothing but my staff, I have now grown into two companies.

12. നീയോഞാന് നിന്നോടു നന്മ ചെയ്യും; നിന്റെ സന്തതിയെ പെരുപ്പംകൊണ്ടു എണ്ണിക്കൂടാത്ത കടല്കരയിലെ മണല്പോലെ ആക്കുമെന്നു അരുളിച്ചെയ്തുവല്ലോ.

12. Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau! Otherwise I fear that when he comes he will strike me down and slay the mothers and children.

13. അന്നു രാത്രി അവന് അവിടെ പാര്ത്തു; തന്റെ പക്കല് ഉള്ളതില് തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്നു സമ്മാനമായിട്ടു

13. You yourself said, 'I will be very good to you, and I will make your descendants like the sands of the sea, which are too numerous to count.''

14. After passing the night there, Jacob selected from what he had with him the following presents for his brother Esau:

15. കറവുള്ള മുപ്പതു ഒട്ടകത്തെയും അവയുടെ കുട്ടികളെയും നാല്പതു പശുവിനെയും പത്തു കാളയെയും ഇരുപതു പെണ്കഴുതയെയും പത്തു കഴുതകൂട്ടിയെയും വേര്തിരിച്ചു.

15. two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats; two hundred ewes and twenty rams;

16. തന്റെ ദാസന്മാരുടെ പക്കല് ഔരോ കൂട്ടത്തെപ്രത്യേകം പ്രത്യേകമായി ഏല്പിച്ചു, തന്റെ ദാസന്മാരോടുനിങ്ങള് എനിക്കു മുമ്പായി കടന്നുപോയി അതതു കൂട്ടത്തിന്നു മദ്ധ്യേ ഇടയിടുവിന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

16. thirty milch camels and their young; forty cows and ten bulls; twenty she-asses and ten he-asses.

17. ഒന്നാമതു പോകുന്നവനോടു അവന് എന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവ് നിന്നെ കണ്ടുനീ ആരുടെ ആള്? എവിടെ പോകുന്നു? നിന്റെ മുമ്പില് പോകുന്ന ഇവ ആരുടെ വക എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിന്നോടു ചോദിച്ചാല്

17. He put these animals in charge of his servants, in separate droves, and he told the servants, 'Go on ahead of me, but keep a space between one drove and the next.'

18. നിന്റെ അടിയാന് യാക്കോബിന്റെ വക ആകുന്നു; ഇതു യജമാനനായ ഏശാവിന്നു അയച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സമ്മാനം; അതാ, അവനും പിന്നാലെ വരുന്നു എന്നു നീ പറയേണം എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു.

18. To the servant in the lead he gave this instruction: 'When my brother Esau meets you, he may ask you, 'Whose man are you? Where are you going? To whom do these animals ahead of you belong?'

19. രണ്ടാമത്തവനോടും മൂന്നാമത്തവനോടും കൂട്ടങ്ങളെ നടത്തിക്കൊണ്ടു പോകുന്ന എല്ലാവരോടുംനിങ്ങള് ഏശാവിനെ കാണുമ്പോള് ഇപ്രകാരം അവനോടുപറവിന് ;

19. Then you shall answer, 'They belong to your brother Jacob, but they have been sent as a gift to my lord Esau; and Jacob himself is right behind us.''

20. അതാ, നിന്റെ അടിയാന് യാക്കോബ് പിന്നാലെ വരുന്നു എന്നും പറവിന് എന്നു അവന് കല്പിച്ചു. എനിക്കു മുമ്പായിപോകുന്ന സമ്മാനംകൊണ്ടു അവനെ ശാന്തമാക്കീട്ടു പിന്നെ ഞാന് അവന്റെ മുഖം കണ്ടുകൊള്ളാം; പക്ഷേ അവന്നു എന്നോടു ദയ തോന്നുമായിരിക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

20. He gave similar instructions to the second servant and the third and to all the others who followed behind the droves, namely: 'Thus and thus shall you say to Esau, when you reach him;

21. അങ്ങനെ സമ്മാനം അവന്റെ മുമ്പായി പോയി; അവനോ അന്നു രാത്രി കൂട്ടത്തോടുകൂടെ പാര്ത്തു.

21. and be sure to add, 'Your servant Jacob is right behind us.'' For Jacob reasoned, 'If I first appease him with gifts that precede me, then later, when I face him, perhaps he will forgive me.'

22. രാത്രിയില് അവന് എഴുന്നേറ്റു. തന്റെ രണ്ടു ഭാര്യമാരെയും രണ്ടു ദാസിമാരെയും പതിനൊന്നു പുത്രന്മാരയും കൂട്ടി യാബ്ബോക് കടവു കടന്നു.

22. So the gifts went on ahead of him, while he stayed that night in the camp.

23. അങ്ങനെ അവന് അവരെ കൂട്ടി ആറ്റിന്നക്കരെ കടത്തി; തനിക്കുള്ളതൊക്കെയും അക്കരെ കടത്തിയശേഷം യാക്കോബ് തനിയേ ശേഷിച്ചു;

23. In the course of that night, however, Jacob arose, took his two wives, with the two maidservants and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

24. അപ്പോള് ഒരു പുരുഷന് ഉഷസ്സാകുവോളം അവനോടു മല്ലു പിടിച്ചു.

24. After he had taken them across the stream and had brought over all his possessions,

25. അവനെ ജയിക്കയില്ല എന്നു കണ്ടപ്പോള് അവന് അവന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടം തൊട്ടു; ആകയാല് അവനോടു മല്ലുപിടിക്കയില് യാക്കോബിന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടം ഉളുക്കിപ്പോയി.

25. Jacob was left there alone. Then some man wrestled with him until the break of dawn.

26. എന്നെ വിടുക; ഉഷസ്സു ഉദിക്കുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞതിന്നുനീ എന്നെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചല്ലാതെ ഞാന് നിന്നെ വിടുകയില്ല എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു.

26. When the man saw that he could not prevail over him, he struck Jacob's hip at its socket, so that the hip socket was wrenched as they wrestled.

27. നിന്റെ പേര് എന്തു എന്നു അവന് അവനോടു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുയാക്കോബ് എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു.

27. The man then said, 'Let me go, for it is daybreak.' But Jacob said, 'I will not let you go until you bless me.'

28. നീ ദൈവത്തോടും മനുഷ്യരോടും മല്ലുപിടിച്ചു ജയിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു നിന്റെ പേര് ഇനി യാക്കോബ് എന്നല്ല യിസ്രായേല് എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടും എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു.

28. 'What is your name?' the man asked. He answered, 'Jacob.'

29. യാക്കോബ് അവനോടുനിന്റെ പേര് എനിക്കു പറഞ്ഞുതരേണം എന്നു അപേക്ഷിച്ചുനീ എന്റെ പേര് ചോദിക്കുന്നതു എന്തു എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു, അവിടെവെച്ചു അവനെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

29. Then the man said, 'You shall no longer be spoken of as Jacob, but as Israel, because you have contended with divine and human beings and have prevailed.'

30. ഞാന് ദൈവത്തെ മുഖാമുഖമായി കണ്ടിട്ടും എനിക്കു ജീവഹാനി വിന്നില്ല എന്നു യാക്കോബ് പറഞ്ഞു, ആ സ്ഥലത്തിന്നു പെനീയേല് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

30. Jacob then asked him, 'Do tell me your name, please.' He answered, 'Why should you want to know my name?' With that, he bade him farewell.

31. അവന് പെനീയേല് കടന്നു പോകുമ്പോള് സൂര്യന് ഉദിച്ചു; എന്നാല് തുടയുടെ ഉളുകൂനിമിത്തം അവന് മുടന്തിനടന്നു.

31. Jacob named the place Peniel, 'Because I have seen God face to face,' he said, 'yet my life has been spared.'

32. അവന് യാക്കോബിന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടത്തിലെ ഞരമ്പു തൊടുകകൊണ്ടു യിസ്രായേല്മക്കള് ഇന്നുവരെയും തുടയുടെ തടത്തിലെ ഞരമ്പു തിന്നാറില്ല.

32. At sunrise, as he left Penuel, Jacob limped along because of his hip.
