1. യാക്കോബ് തന്റെ വഴിക്കു പോയി; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ദൂതന്മാര് അവന്റെ എതിരെ വന്നു.

1. Early in the morning Lavan got up, kissed his sons and daughters, and blessed them. Then Lavan left and returned to his own place.

2. യാക്കോബ് അവരെ കണ്ടപ്പോള്ഇതു ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സേന എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ആ സ്ഥലത്തിന്നു മഹനയീം എന്നു പേര് ഇട്ടു.

2. Ya'akov went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

3. അനന്തരം യാക്കോബ് എദോംനാടായ സേയീര്ദേശത്തു തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല് തനിക്കു മുമ്പായി ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചു.

3. When Ya'akov saw them, he said, 'This is God's camp,' and called that place Machanayim [[two camps]].

4. അവരോടു കല്പിച്ചതു എന്തെന്നാല്എന്റെ യജമാനനായ ഏശാവിനോടു ഇങ്ങനെ പറവിന് നിന്റെ അടിയാന് യാക്കോബ് ഇപ്രകാരം പറയുന്നുഞാന് ലാബാന്റെ അടുക്കല് പരദേശിയായി പാര്ത്തു ഇന്നുവരെ അവിടെ താമസിച്ചു.

4. Ya'akov sent messengers ahead of him to 'Esav his brother toward the land of Se'ir, the country of Edom,

5. എനിക്കു കാളയും കഴുതയും ആടും ദാസീദാസന്മാരും ഉണ്ടു; നിനക്കു എന്നൊടു കൃപ തോന്നേണ്ടതിന്നാകുന്നു യജമാനനെ അറിയിപ്പാന് ആളയക്കുന്നതു.

5. with these instructions: 'Here is what you are to say to my lord 'Esav: 'Your servant Ya'akov says, 'I have been living with Lavan and have stayed until now.

6. ദൂതന്മാര് യാക്കോബിന്റെ അടുക്കല് മടങ്ങി വന്നുഞങ്ങള് നിന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല് പോയി വന്നു; അവന് നാനൂറു ആളുമായി നിന്നെ എതിരേല്പാന് വരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

6. I have cattle, donkeys and flocks, and male and female servants. I am sending to tell this news to my lord, in order to win your favor.' ''

7. അപ്പോള് യാക്കോബ് ഏറ്റവും ഭ്രമിച്ചു ഭയവശനായി, തന്നോടു കൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ജനത്തെയും ആടുകളെയും കന്നുകാലികളെയും ഒട്ടകങ്ങളെയും രണ്ടു കൂട്ടമായി വിഭാഗിച്ചു.

7. The messengers returned to Ya'akov saying, 'We went to your brother 'Esav, and he is coming to meet you; with him are four hundred men.'

8. ഏശാവ് ഒരു കൂട്ടത്തിന്റെ നേരെ വന്നു അതിനെ നശിപ്പിച്ചാല് മറ്റേ കൂട്ടത്തിന്നു ഔടിപ്പോകാമല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. Ya'akov became greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people, flocks, cattle and camels with him into two camps,

9. പിന്നെ യാക്കോബ് പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചതുഎന്റെ പിതാവായ അബ്രാഹാമിന്റെ ദൈവവും എന്റെ പിതാവായ യിസ്ഹാക്കിന്റെ ദൈവവുമായുള്ളോവേ, നിന്റെ ദേശത്തേക്കും നിന്റെ ചാര്ച്ചക്കാരുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കും മടങ്ങിപ്പോക; ഞാന് നിനക്കു നന്മ ചെയ്യുമെന്നു എന്നൊടു അരുളിച്ചെയ്ത യഹോവേ,

9. saying, 'If 'Esav comes to the one camp and attacks it, at least the camp that is left will escape.'

10. അടിയനോടു കാണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സകലദയെക്കും സകലവിശ്വസ്തതെക്കും ഞാന് അപാത്രമത്രേ; ഒരു വടിയോടുകൂടെ മാത്രമല്ലോ ഞാന് ഈ യോര്ദ്ദാന് കടന്നതു; ഇപ്പോഴോ ഞാന് രണ്ടു കൂട്ടമായി തീര്ന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.

10. Then Ya'akov said, 'God of my father Avraham and God of my father Yitz'chak, ADONAI, who told me, 'Return to your country and your kinsmen, and I will do you good':

11. എന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ കയ്യില്നിന്നു എന്നെ രക്ഷിക്കേണമേ; പക്ഷേ അവന് വന്നു എന്നെയും മക്കളോടുകൂടെ തള്ളയെയും നശിപ്പിക്കും എന്നു ഞാന് ഭയപ്പെടുന്നു.

11. I'm not worthy of all the love and faithfulness you have shown your servant, since I crossed the Yarden with only my staff. But now I have become two camps.

12. നീയോഞാന് നിന്നോടു നന്മ ചെയ്യും; നിന്റെ സന്തതിയെ പെരുപ്പംകൊണ്ടു എണ്ണിക്കൂടാത്ത കടല്കരയിലെ മണല്പോലെ ആക്കുമെന്നു അരുളിച്ചെയ്തുവല്ലോ.

12. Please! Rescue me from my brother 'Esav! I'm afraid of him, afraid he'll come and attack me, without regard for mothers or children.

13. അന്നു രാത്രി അവന് അവിടെ പാര്ത്തു; തന്റെ പക്കല് ഉള്ളതില് തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്നു സമ്മാനമായിട്ടു

13. You said, 'I will certainly do you good and make your descendants as numerous as the grains of sand by the sea, which are so many they can't be counted.''

14. He stayed there that night; then he chose from among his possessions the following as a present for 'Esav his brother:

15. കറവുള്ള മുപ്പതു ഒട്ടകത്തെയും അവയുടെ കുട്ടികളെയും നാല്പതു പശുവിനെയും പത്തു കാളയെയും ഇരുപതു പെണ്കഴുതയെയും പത്തു കഴുതകൂട്ടിയെയും വേര്തിരിച്ചു.

15. two hundred female goats and twenty males, two hundred female sheep and twenty males,

16. തന്റെ ദാസന്മാരുടെ പക്കല് ഔരോ കൂട്ടത്തെപ്രത്യേകം പ്രത്യേകമായി ഏല്പിച്ചു, തന്റെ ദാസന്മാരോടുനിങ്ങള് എനിക്കു മുമ്പായി കടന്നുപോയി അതതു കൂട്ടത്തിന്നു മദ്ധ്യേ ഇടയിടുവിന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

16. thirty milk-camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten colts.

17. ഒന്നാമതു പോകുന്നവനോടു അവന് എന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവ് നിന്നെ കണ്ടുനീ ആരുടെ ആള്? എവിടെ പോകുന്നു? നിന്റെ മുമ്പില് പോകുന്ന ഇവ ആരുടെ വക എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിന്നോടു ചോദിച്ചാല്

17. He turned them over to his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, 'Cross over in front of me, and keep a space between each drove and the next one.'

18. നിന്റെ അടിയാന് യാക്കോബിന്റെ വക ആകുന്നു; ഇതു യജമാനനായ ഏശാവിന്നു അയച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സമ്മാനം; അതാ, അവനും പിന്നാലെ വരുന്നു എന്നു നീ പറയേണം എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു.

18. He instructed the servant in front, 'When 'Esav my brother meets you and asks you, 'Whose servant are you? Where are you going? And whose animals are these?'

19. രണ്ടാമത്തവനോടും മൂന്നാമത്തവനോടും കൂട്ടങ്ങളെ നടത്തിക്കൊണ്ടു പോകുന്ന എല്ലാവരോടുംനിങ്ങള് ഏശാവിനെ കാണുമ്പോള് ഇപ്രകാരം അവനോടുപറവിന് ;

19. then you are to say, 'They belong to your servant Ya'akov, and they are a present he has sent to my lord 'Esav; and Ya'akov himself is just behind us.''

20. അതാ, നിന്റെ അടിയാന് യാക്കോബ് പിന്നാലെ വരുന്നു എന്നും പറവിന് എന്നു അവന് കല്പിച്ചു. എനിക്കു മുമ്പായിപോകുന്ന സമ്മാനംകൊണ്ടു അവനെ ശാന്തമാക്കീട്ടു പിന്നെ ഞാന് അവന്റെ മുഖം കണ്ടുകൊള്ളാം; പക്ഷേ അവന്നു എന്നോടു ദയ തോന്നുമായിരിക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

20. He also instructed the second servant, and the third, and all that followed the droves, 'When you encounter 'Esav, you are to speak to him in the same way,

21. അങ്ങനെ സമ്മാനം അവന്റെ മുമ്പായി പോയി; അവനോ അന്നു രാത്രി കൂട്ടത്തോടുകൂടെ പാര്ത്തു.

21. and you are to add, 'And there, just behind us, is your servant Ya'akov.'' For he said, 'I will appease him first with the present that goes ahead of me; then, after that, I will see him myself- and maybe he will be friendly toward me.'

22. രാത്രിയില് അവന് എഴുന്നേറ്റു. തന്റെ രണ്ടു ഭാര്യമാരെയും രണ്ടു ദാസിമാരെയും പതിനൊന്നു പുത്രന്മാരയും കൂട്ടി യാബ്ബോക് കടവു കടന്നു.

22. So the present crossed over ahead of him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.

23. അങ്ങനെ അവന് അവരെ കൂട്ടി ആറ്റിന്നക്കരെ കടത്തി; തനിക്കുള്ളതൊക്കെയും അക്കരെ കടത്തിയശേഷം യാക്കോബ് തനിയേ ശേഷിച്ചു;

23. He got up that night, took his two wives, his two slave-girls, and his eleven children, and forded the Yabok.

24. അപ്പോള് ഒരു പുരുഷന് ഉഷസ്സാകുവോളം അവനോടു മല്ലു പിടിച്ചു.

24. He took them and sent them across the stream, then sent his possessions across;

25. അവനെ ജയിക്കയില്ല എന്നു കണ്ടപ്പോള് അവന് അവന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടം തൊട്ടു; ആകയാല് അവനോടു മല്ലുപിടിക്കയില് യാക്കോബിന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടം ഉളുക്കിപ്പോയി.

25. and Ya'akov was left alone. Then some man wrestled with him until daybreak.

26. എന്നെ വിടുക; ഉഷസ്സു ഉദിക്കുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞതിന്നുനീ എന്നെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചല്ലാതെ ഞാന് നിന്നെ വിടുകയില്ല എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു.

26. When he saw that he did not defeat Ya'akov, he struck Ya'akov's hip socket, so that his hip was dislocated while wrestling with him.

27. നിന്റെ പേര് എന്തു എന്നു അവന് അവനോടു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുയാക്കോബ് എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു.

27. The man said, 'Let me go, because it's daybreak.' But Ya'akov replied, 'I won't let you go unless you bless me.'

28. നീ ദൈവത്തോടും മനുഷ്യരോടും മല്ലുപിടിച്ചു ജയിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു നിന്റെ പേര് ഇനി യാക്കോബ് എന്നല്ല യിസ്രായേല് എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടും എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു.

28. The man asked, 'What is your name?' and he answered, 'Ya'akov.'

29. യാക്കോബ് അവനോടുനിന്റെ പേര് എനിക്കു പറഞ്ഞുതരേണം എന്നു അപേക്ഷിച്ചുനീ എന്റെ പേര് ചോദിക്കുന്നതു എന്തു എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു, അവിടെവെച്ചു അവനെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

29. Then the man said, 'From now on, you will no longer be called Ya'akov, but Isra'el; because you have shown your strength to both God and men and have prevailed.'

30. ഞാന് ദൈവത്തെ മുഖാമുഖമായി കണ്ടിട്ടും എനിക്കു ജീവഹാനി വിന്നില്ല എന്നു യാക്കോബ് പറഞ്ഞു, ആ സ്ഥലത്തിന്നു പെനീയേല് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

30. Ya'akov asked him, 'Please tell me your name.' But he answered, 'Why are you asking about my name?' and blessed him there.

31. അവന് പെനീയേല് കടന്നു പോകുമ്പോള് സൂര്യന് ഉദിച്ചു; എന്നാല് തുടയുടെ ഉളുകൂനിമിത്തം അവന് മുടന്തിനടന്നു.

31. Ya'akov called the place P'ni-El [[face of God]], 'Because I have seen God face to face, yet my life is spared.'

32. അവന് യാക്കോബിന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടത്തിലെ ഞരമ്പു തൊടുകകൊണ്ടു യിസ്രായേല്മക്കള് ഇന്നുവരെയും തുടയുടെ തടത്തിലെ ഞരമ്പു തിന്നാറില്ല.

32. As the sun rose upon him he went on past P'ni-El, limping at the hip.
