1. പ്രവാസികള് യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവേക്കു മന്ദിരം പണിയുന്നു എന്നു യെഹൂദയുടെയും ബെന്യാമീന്റെയും വൈരികള് കേട്ടപ്പോള്

1. The enemies of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people had come back to rebuild the temple of the LORD God of Israel.

2. അവര് സെരുബ്ബാബേലിന്റെയും പിതൃഭവനത്തലവന്മാരുടെയും അടുക്കല് വന്നു അവരോടുഞങ്ങള് നിങ്ങളോടുകൂടെ പണിയട്ടെ; നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവത്തെ നിങ്ങളെന്നപോലെ ഞങ്ങളും അന്വേഷിക്കയും ഞങ്ങള് അവന്നു, ഞങ്ങളെ ഇവിടെ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന അശ്ശൂര്രാജാവായ എസര്ഹദ്ദോന്റെ കാലംമുതല് യാഗം കഴിക്കയും ചെയ്തുപോരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

2. So they went to Zerubbabel and to the family leaders and said, 'Let us help! Ever since King Esarhaddon of Assyria brought us here, we have worshiped your God and offered sacrifices to him.'

3. But Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the family leaders answered, 'You cannot take part in building a temple for the LORD our God! We will build it ourselves, just as King Cyrus of Persia commanded us.'

4. ആകയാല് ദേശനിവാസികള് യെഹൂദാജനത്തിന്നു ധൈര്യക്ഷയം വരുത്തി പണിയാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവരെ പേടിപ്പിച്ചു.

4. Then the neighboring people began to do everything possible to frighten the Jews and to make them stop building.

5. അവരുടെ ഉദ്ദേശം നിഷ്ഫലമാക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവര് പാര്സിരാജാവായ കോരെശിന്റെ കാലത്തൊക്കെയും പാര്സിരാജാവായ ദാര്യ്യാവേശിന്റെ വാഴ്ചവരെയും അവര്ക്കും വിരോധമായി കാര്യസ്ഥന്മാരെ കൈക്കൂലി കൊടുത്തു വശത്താക്കി.

5. During the time that Cyrus was king and even until Darius became king, they kept bribing government officials to slow down the work.

6. അഹശ്വേരോശിന്റെ കാലത്തു, അവന്റെ വാഴ്ചയുടെ ആരംഭത്തില് തന്നേ, അവര് യെഹൂദയിലെയും യെരൂശലേമിലെയും നിവാസികള്ക്കു വിരോധമായി അന്യായപത്രം എഴുതി അയച്ചു.

6. In the first year that Xerxes was king, the neighboring people brought written charges against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.

7. Later, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and their advisors got together and wrote a letter to Artaxerxes when he was king of Persia. It was written in Aramaic and had to be translated.

8. ധര്മ്മാദ്ധ്യക്ഷനായ രെഹൂമും രായസക്കാരനായ ശിംശായിയും യെരൂശലേമിന്നു വിരോധമായി അര്ത്ഥഹ് ശഷ്ടാരാജാവിന്നു ഒരു പത്രിക എഴുതി അയച്ചു.

8. A letter was also written to Artaxerxes about Jerusalem by Governor Rehum, Secretary Shimshai, and their advisors, including the judges, the governors, the officials, and the local leaders. They were joined in writing this letter by people from Erech and Babylonia, the Elamites from Susa, and people from other foreign nations that the great and famous Ashurbanipal had forced to settle in Samaria and other parts of Western Province.

10. മഹാനും ശ്രേഷ്ഠനുമായ അസ്നപ്പാര് പിടിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുവന്നു ശമര്യ്യാപട്ടണങ്ങളിലും നദിക്കു ഇക്കരെ മറ്റു ദിക്കുകളിലും പാര്പ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ശേഷംജാതികളും ഇത്യാദി.

11. അവര് അര്ത്ഥഹ് ശഷ്ടാരാജാവിന്നു അയച്ച പത്രികയുടെ പകര്പ്പു എന്തെന്നാല്നദിക്കു ഇക്കരെയുള്ള നിന്റെ ദാസന്മാരായ പുരുഷന്മാര് ഇത്യാദിരാജാവു ബോധിപ്പാന്

11. This letter said: Your Majesty King Artaxerxes, we are your servants from everywhere in Western Province, and we send you our greetings.

12. തിരുമുമ്പില്നിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടു ഞങ്ങളുടെ അടുക്കല് യെരൂശലേമില് വന്നിരിക്കുന്ന യെഹൂദന്മാര് മത്സരവും ദുഷ്ടതയുമുള്ള ആ പട്ടണം പണികയും അതിന്റെ മതിലുകള് കെട്ടുകയും അടിസ്ഥാനങ്ങള് നന്നാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

12. You should know that the Jews who left your country have moved back to Jerusalem and are now rebuilding that terrible city. In fact, they have almost finished rebuilding the walls and repairing the foundations.

13. പട്ടണം പണിതു മതിലുകള് കെട്ടിത്തീര്ന്നാല് അവര് കരമോ നികുതിയോ ചുങ്കമോ ഒന്നും അടെക്കയില്ല; അങ്ങനെ ഒടുവില് അവര് രാജാക്കന്മാര്ക്കും നഷ്ടം വരുത്തും എന്നു രാജാവിന്നു ബോധിച്ചിരിക്കേണം.

13. You should also know that if the walls are completed and the city is rebuilt, the Jews won't pay any kind of taxes, and there will be less money in your treasury.

14. എന്നാല് ഞങ്ങള് കോവിലകത്തെ ഉപ്പു തിന്നുന്നവരാകയാലും രാജാവിന്നു അപമാനം വരുന്നതു കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നതു ഞങ്ങള്ക്കു ഉചിതമല്ലായ്കയാലും ഞങ്ങള് ആളയച്ചു രാജാവിനെ ഇതു ബോധിപ്പിച്ചുകൊള്ളുന്നു.

14. We are telling you this, because you have done so much for us, and we want everyone to respect you.

15. അവിടത്തെ പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ വൃത്താന്തപുസ്തകത്തില് നോക്കിയാല് ഈ പട്ടണം മത്സരവും രാജാക്കന്മാര്ക്കും സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്ക്കും ഉപദ്രവവും ഉള്ള പട്ടണം എന്നും അതില് അവര് പുരാതനമേ കലഹം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയതിനാല് ഈ പട്ടണം നശിച്ചുകിടക്കുന്നു എന്നും വൃത്താന്തപുസ്തകത്തില്നിന്നു അറിവാകും.

15. If you look up the official records of your ancestors, you will find that Jerusalem has constantly rebelled and has led others to rebel against kings and provinces. That's why the city was destroyed in the first place.

16. ഈ പട്ടണം പണികയും അതിന്റെ മതിലുകള് കെട്ടിത്തീരുകയും ചെയ്താല് അതു നിമിത്തം അവിടത്തേക്കു നദിക്കു ഇക്കരെ ഒരു അവകാശവും ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കയില്ലെന്നു രാജാവിനെ ഉണര്ത്തിച്ചുകൊള്ളുന്നു.

16. If Jerusalem is rebuilt and its walls completed, you will no longer have control over Western Province.

17. അതിന്നു രാജാവു ധര്മ്മാദ്ധ്യക്ഷനായ രെഹൂമിന്നും രായസക്കാരനായ ശിംശായിക്കും ശമര്യ്യാനിവാസികളായ അവരുടെ കൂട്ടക്കാര്ക്കും നദിക്കും അക്കരെയുള്ള ശേഷംപേര്ക്കും മറുപടി എഴുതി അയച്ചതു എന്തെന്നാല്നിങ്ങള്ക്കു കുശലം ഇത്യാദി;

17. King Artaxerxes answered: Greetings to Governor Rehum, Secretary Shimshai, and to your advisors in Samaria and other parts of Western Province.

18. നിങ്ങള് കൊടുത്തയച്ച പത്രിക നമ്മുടെ സന്നിധിയില് വ്യക്തമായി വായിച്ചുകേട്ടു.

18. After your letter was translated and read to me,

19. നാം കല്പന കൊടുത്തിട്ടു അവര് ശോധനചെയ്തു നോക്കിയപ്പോള് ആ പട്ടണം പുരാതനമേ രാജാക്കന്മാരോടു എതിര്ത്തുനിലക്കുന്നതു എന്നും അതില് മത്സരവും കലഹവും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്നും

19. I had the old records checked. It is true that for years Jerusalem has rebelled and caused trouble for other kings and nations.

20. യെരൂശലേമില് ബലവാന്മാരായ രാജാക്കന്മാര് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു; അവര് നദിക്കു അക്കരെയുള്ള നാടൊക്കെയും വാണു കരവും നികുതിയും ചുങ്കവും വാങ്ങിവന്നു എന്നും കണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.

20. And powerful kings have ruled Western Province from Jerusalem and have collected all kinds of taxes.

21. ആകയാല് നാം മറ്റൊരു കല്പന അയക്കുന്നതുവരെ അവര് പട്ടണം പണിയുന്നതു നിര്ത്തിവെക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു ആജ്ഞാപിപ്പിന് .

21. I want you to command the people to stop rebuilding the city until I give further notice.

22. നിങ്ങള് അതില് ഉപേക്ഷചെയ്യാതെ ജാഗ്രതയായിരിപ്പിന് ; രാജാക്കന്മാര്ക്കും നഷ്ടവും ഹാനിയും വരരുതു.

22. Do this right now, so that no harm will come to the kingdom.

23. അര്ത്ഥഹ് ശഷ്ടാരാജാവിന്റെ എഴുത്തിന്റെ പകര്പ്പു രെഹൂമും രായസക്കാരനായ ശിംശായിയും അവരുടെ കൂട്ടക്കാരും വായിച്ചു കേട്ടശേഷം അവര് യെരൂശലേമില് യെഹൂദന്മാരുടെ അടുക്കല് ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു ചെന്നു ബലാല്ക്കാരത്തോടെ അവരെ ഹേമിച്ചു പണിമുടക്കി.

23. As soon as this letter was read, Governor Rehum, Secretary Shimshai, and their advisors went to Jerusalem and forced everyone to stop rebuilding the city.

24. അങ്ങനെ യെരൂശലേമിലെ ദൈവാലയത്തിന്റെ പണി മുടങ്ങി; പാര്സിരാജാവായ ദാര്യ്യാവേശിന്റെ വാഴ്ചയുടെ രണ്ടാം ആണ്ടുവരെ പണി മുടങ്ങിക്കിടന്നു.

24. The Jews were forced to stop work on the temple and were not able to do any more building until the year after Darius became king of Persia.
