1. അഹശ്വേരോശിന്റെ കാലത്തു--ഹിന്തുദേശംമുതല് കൂശ്വരെ നൂറ്റിരുപത്തേഴു സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങള് വാണ അഹശ്വേരോശ് ഇവന് തന്നേ -

1. The following events happened in the days of Ahasuerus. (I am referring to that Ahasuerus who used to rule over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces extending all the way from India to Ethiopia.)

2. ആ കാലത്തു അഹശ്വേരോശ് രാജാവു ശൂശന് രാജധാനിയില് തന്റെ രാജാസനത്തിന്മേല് ഇരിക്കുമ്പോള്

2. In those days, as King Ahasuerus sat on his royal throne in Susa the citadel,

3. തന്റെ വാഴ്ചയുടെ മൂന്നാം ആണ്ടില് തന്റെ സകലപ്രഭുക്കന്മാര്ക്കും ഭൃത്യന്മാര്ക്കും ഒരു വിരുന്നു കഴിച്ചു; പാര്സ്യയിലെയും മേദ്യയിലെയും സേനാധിപന്മാരും പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരും സംസ്ഥാനപതികളും അവന്റെ സന്നിധിയില് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

3. in the third year of his reign he provided a banquet for all his officials and his servants. The army of Persia and Media was present, as well as the nobles and the officials of the provinces.

4. അന്നു അവന് തന്റെ രാജകീയമഹത്വത്തിന്റെ ഐശ്വര്യവും തന്റെ മഹിമാധിക്യത്തിന്റെ പ്രതാപവും ഏറിയനാള്, നൂറ്റെണ്പതു ദിവസത്തോളം തന്നേ, കാണിച്ചു.

4. He displayed the riches of his royal glory and the splendor of his majestic greatness for a lengthy period of time a hundred and eighty days, to be exact!

5. ആ നാളുകള് കഴിഞ്ഞശേഷം രാജാവു ശൂശന് രാജധാനിയില് കൂടിയിരുന്ന വലിയവരും ചെറിയവരുമായ സകലജനത്തിന്നും രാജധാനിയുടെ ഉദ്യാനപ്രാകാരത്തില്വെച്ചു ഏഴുദിവസം വിരുന്നു കഴിച്ചു.

5. When those days were completed, the king then provided a seven-day banquet for all the people who were present in Susa the citadel, for those of highest standing to the most lowly. It was held in the court located in the garden of the royal palace.

6. അവിടെ വെണ്കല് തൂണുകളിന്മേല് വെള്ളിവളയങ്ങളില് ശണനൂലും ധൂമ്രനൂലുംകൊണ്ടുള്ള ചരടുകളാല് വെള്ളയും പച്ചയും നീലയുമായ ശീലകള് തൂക്കിയിരുന്നു; ചുവന്നതും വെളുത്തതും മഞ്ഞയും കറുത്തതുമായ മര്മ്മരക്കല്ലു പടുത്തിരുന്ന തളത്തില് പൊന് കസവും വെള്ളിക്കസവുമുള്ള മെത്തകള് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

6. The furnishings included linen and purple curtains hung by cords of the finest linen and purple wool on silver rings, alabaster columns, gold and silver couches displayed on a floor made of valuable stones of alabaster, mother-of-pearl, and mineral stone.

7. വിവിധാകൃതിയിലുള്ള പൊന് പാത്രങ്ങളിലായിരുന്നു അവര്ക്കും കുടിപ്പാന് കൊടുത്തതു; രാജവീഞ്ഞും രാജപദവിക്കു ഒത്തവണ്ണം ധാരാളം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

7. Drinks were served in golden containers, all of which differed from one another. Royal wine was available in abundance at the king's expense.

8. എന്നാല് രാജാവു തന്റെ രാജധാനിവിചാരകന്മാരോടുആരെയും നിര്ബ്ബന്ധിക്കരുതു; ഔരോരുത്തന് താന്താന്റെ മനസ്സുപോലെ ചെയ്തുകൊള്ളട്ടെ എന്നു കല്പിച്ചിരുന്നതിനാല് പാനം ചട്ടംപോലെ ആയിരുന്നു.

8. There were no restrictions on the drinking, for the king had instructed all of his supervisors that they should do as everyone so desired.

9. രാജ്ഞിയായ വസ്ഥിയും അഹശ്വേരോശ്രാജാവിന്റെ രാജധാനിയില്വെച്ചു സ്ത്രീകള്ക്കു ഒരു വിരുന്നു കഴിച്ചു.

9. Queen Vashti also gave a banquet for the women in King Ahasuerus' royal palace.

11. ഏഴു ഷണ്ഡന്മാരോടു ജനങ്ങള്ക്കും പ്രഭുക്കന്മാര്ക്കും വസ്ഥിരാജ്ഞിയുടെ സൌന്ദര്യം കാണിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവളെ രാജകിരീടം ധരിപ്പിച്ചു രാജസന്നിധിയില് കൊണ്ടുവരുവാന് കല്പിച്ചു; അവള് സുമുഖിയായിരുന്നു.

11. to bring Queen Vashti into the king's presence wearing her royal high turban. He wanted to show the people and the officials her beauty, for she was very attractive.

12. എന്നാല് ഷണ്ഡന്മാര്മുഖാന്തരം അയച്ച രാജകല്പന മറുത്തു വസ്ഥിരാജ്ഞി ചെല്ലാതിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ടു രാജാവു ഏറ്റവും കോപിച്ചു; അവന്റെ കോപം അവന്റെ ഉള്ളില് ജ്വലിച്ചു.

12. But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's bidding conveyed through the eunuchs. Then the king became extremely angry, and his rage consumed him.

13. ആ സമയത്തു രാജമുഖം കാണുന്നവരും രാജ്യത്തു പ്രധാനസ്ഥാനങ്ങളില് ഇരിക്കുന്നവരുമായ കെര്ശനാ, ശേഥാര്, അദ്മാഥാ, തര്ശീശ്, മേരെസ്, മര്സെനാ, മെമൂഖാന് എന്നിങ്ങനെ പാര്സ്യയിലെയും മേദ്യയിലെയും ഏഴു പ്രഭുക്കന്മാര് അവനോടു അടുത്തു ഇരിക്കയായിരുന്നു.

13. The king then inquired of the wise men who were discerners of the times for it was the royal custom to confer with all those who were proficient in laws and legalities.

14. രാജ്യധര്മ്മത്തിലും ന്യായത്തിലും പരിജ്ഞാനികളായ എല്ലാവരോടും ആലോചിക്കുക പതിവായിരുന്നതിനാല് കാലജ്ഞന്മാരായ ആ വിദ്വാന്മാരോടു രാജാവു

14. Those who were closest to him were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan. These men were the seven officials of Persia and Media who saw the king on a regular basis and had the most prominent offices in the kingdom.

15. ഷണ്ഡന്മാര്മുഖാന്തരം അഹശ്വേരോശ്രാജാവു അയച്ച കല്പന വസ്ഥിരാജ്ഞി അനുസരിക്കായ്കകൊണ്ടു രാജ്യധര്മ്മപ്രകാരം അവളോടു ചെയ്യേണ്ടതു എന്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

15. The king asked, 'By law, what should be done to Queen Vashti in light of the fact that she has not obeyed the instructions of King Ahasuerus conveyed through the eunuchs?'

16. അതിന്നു മെമൂഖാന് രാജാവിനോടും പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരോടും ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞതെന്തെന്നാല്വസ്ഥിരാജ്ഞി രാജാവിനോടു മാത്രമല്ല, അഹശ്വേരോശ്രാജാവിന്റെ സര്വ്വസംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലുള്ള സകലപ്രഭുക്കന്മാരോടും ജാതികളോടും അന്യായം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു.

16. Memucan then replied to the king and the officials, 'The wrong of Queen Vashti is not against the king alone, but against all the officials and all the people who are throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus.

17. രാജ്ഞിയുടെ ഈ പ്രവൃത്തി സകലസ്ത്രീകളും അറിയും; അഹശ്വേരോശ്രാജാവു വസ്ഥിരാജ്ഞിയെ തന്റെ മുമ്പാകെ കൊണ്ടുവരുവാന് കല്പിച്ചയച്ചാറെ അവള് ചെന്നില്ലല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവര് തങ്ങളുടെ ഭര്ത്താക്കന്മാരെ നിന്ദിക്കും.

17. For the matter concerning the queen will spread to all the women, leading them to treat their husbands with contempt, saying, 'When King Ahasuerus gave orders to bring Queen Vashti into his presence, she would not come.'

18. ഇന്നു തന്നെ രാജ്ഞിയുടെ പ്രവൃത്തി കേട്ട പാര്സ്യയിലെയും മേദ്യയിലെയും പ്രഭുപത്നിമാര് രാജാവിന്റെ സകലപ്രഭുക്കന്മാരോടും അങ്ങനെ തന്നേ പറയും; ഇങ്ങനെ നിന്ദയും നീരസവും അധികരിക്കും.

18. And this very day the noble ladies of Persia and Media who have heard the matter concerning the queen will respond in the same way to all the royal officials, and there will be more than enough contempt and anger!

19. രാജാവിന്നു സമ്മതമെങ്കില് വസ്ഥി ഇനി അഹശ്വേരോശ്രാജാവിന്റെ സന്നിധിയില് വരരുതു എന്നു തിരുമുമ്പില്നിന്നു ഒരു രാജകല്പന പുറപ്പെടുവിക്കയും അതു മാറ്റിക്കൂടാതവണ്ണം പാര്സ്യരുടെയും മേദ്യരുടെയും രാജ്യധര്മ്മത്തില് എഴുതിക്കയും രാജാവു അവളുടെ രാജ്ഞിസ്ഥാനം അവളെക്കാള് നല്ലവളായ മറ്റൊരുത്തിക്കു കൊടുക്കയും വേണം.

19. If the king is so inclined, let a royal edict go forth from him, and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media that cannot be repealed, that Vashti may not come into the presence of King Ahasuerus, and let the king convey her royalty to another who is more deserving than she.

20. രാജാവു കല്പിക്കുന്ന വിധി രാജ്യത്തെല്ലാടവും--അതു മഹാരാജ്യമല്ലോ--പരസ്യമാകുമ്പോള് സകലഭാര്യമാരും വലിയവരോ ചെറിയവരോ ആയ തങ്ങളുടെ ഭര്ത്താക്കന്മാരെ ബഹുമാനിക്കും.

20. And let the king's decision which he will enact be disseminated throughout all his kingdom, vast though it is. Then all the women will give honor to their husbands, from the most prominent to the lowly.'

21. ഈ വാക്കു രാജാവിന്നും പ്രഭുക്കന്മാര്ക്കും ബോധിച്ചു; രാജാവു മെമൂഖാന്റെ വാക്കുപോലെ ചെയ്തു.

21. The matter seemed appropriate to the king and the officials. So the king acted on the advice of Memucan.

22. ഏതു പുരുഷനും തന്റെ വീട്ടില് കര്ത്തവ്യം നടത്തുകയും സ്വഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കയും വേണമെന്നു രാജാവു തന്റെ സകലസംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലേക്കും അതതു സംസ്ഥാനത്തേക്കു അതതിന്റെ അക്ഷരത്തിലും അതതു ജാതിക്കു അവരവരുടെ ഭാഷയിലും എഴുത്തു അയച്ചു.

22. He sent letters throughout all the royal provinces, to each province according to its own script and to each people according to its own language, that every man should be ruling his family and should be speaking the language of his own people.
