1. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ ഞാന് കണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു തിന്മ ഉണ്ടു; അതു മനുഷ്യര്ക്കും ഭാരമുള്ളതാകുന്നു.

1. There is [another] evil which I have seen under the sun, and it [is] very common among men:

2. ദൈവം ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്നു ധനവും ഐശ്വര്യവും മാനവും നലകുന്നു; അവന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നതിന്നു ഒന്നിന്നും അവന്നു കുറവില്ല; എങ്കിലും അതു അനുഭവിപ്പാന് ദൈവം അവന്നു അധികാരം കൊടുക്കുന്നില്ല; ഒരു അന്യനത്രേ അതു അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതു; അതു മായയും വല്ലാത്ത വ്യാധിയും തന്നേ.

2. A man to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honour so that he lacks nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to eat of it, but the strangers eat it; this [is] vanity, and it [is] an evil disease.

3. ഒരു മനുഷ്യന് നൂറുമക്കളെ ജനിപ്പിക്കയും ഏറിയ സംവത്സരം ജീവിച്ചു ദീര്ഘായുസ്സായിരിക്കയും ചെയ്തിട്ടും അവന് നന്മ അനുഭവിച്ചു തൃപ്തനാകാതെയും ഒരു ശവസംസ്ക്കാരം പ്രാപിക്കാതെയും പോയാല് ഗര്ഭം അലസിപ്പോയ പിണ്ഡം അവനെക്കാള് നന്നു എന്നു ഞാന് പറയുന്നു.

3. If a man begets a hundred [sons] and lives many years so that the days of his years are many, if his soul is not filled with good and also [that] he have no burial; I say [that] an aborted birth [is] better than he.

4. അതു മായയില് വരുന്നു; അന്ധകാരത്തിലേക്കു പോകുന്നു; അതിന്റെ പേര് അന്ധകാരത്തില് മറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.

4. For he came in vain and departs unto darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

5. സൂര്യനെ അതു കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല അറിഞ്ഞിട്ടുമില്ല; മറ്റേവനെക്കാള് അധികം വിശ്രാമം അതിന്നുണ്ടു.

5. Even though he has not seen the sun nor known [any thing]; this [one] has more rest than the other.

6. അവന് ഈരായിരത്താണ്ടു ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നിട്ടും നന്മ അനുഭവിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില് എല്ലാവരും ഒരു സ്ഥലത്തേക്കല്ലയോ പോകുന്നതു?

6. For though [the other should] live a thousand years twice and has not enjoyed good; both shall surely go to the same place.

7. മനുഷ്യന്റെ പ്രയത്നമൊക്കെയും അവന്റെ വായക്കുവേണ്ടിയാകുന്നു; എങ്കിലും അവന്റെ കൊതിക്കു മതിവരുന്നില്ല.

7. All the labour of man [is] for his mouth, and with all this the appetite is not filled.

8. മൂഢനെക്കാള് ജ്ഞാനിക്കു എന്തു വിശേഷതയുള്ളു? പരിജ്ഞാനമുള്ള സാധുവിന്നു ജീവനുള്ളവരുടെ മുമ്പില് നടക്കുന്നതില് എന്തു വിശേഷതയുള്ളു?

8. For what has the wise more than the fool? what [more has] the poor that knows how to walk among the living?

9. അഭിലാഷത്തിന്റെ സഞ്ചാരത്തെക്കാള് കണ്ണിന്റെ നോട്ടം നല്ലതു; അതും മായയും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നവും അത്രേ.

9. It is better to enjoy the good that is present than the wandering of desire; this [is] also vanity and vexation of spirit.

10. ഒരുത്തന് എന്തു തന്നേ ആയിരുന്നാലും അവന്നു പണ്ടേ തന്നേ പേര് വിളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; മനുഷ്യന് എന്താകും എന്നു വിധിച്ചുമിരിക്കുന്നു; തന്നിലും ബലമേറിയവനോടു വാദിപ്പാന് അവന്നു കഴിവില്ല.

10. He that is has been named already; and it is known that he [is] man and that he shall not be able to contend with him that is mightier than he.

11. മായയെ വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വാക്കു പെരുക്കിയാലും മനുഷ്യന്നു എന്തു ലാഭം?

11. Certainly the many words multiply vanity, what more does man have?

12. മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവിതകാലത്തു, അവന് നിഴല് പോലെ കഴിച്ചുകൂട്ടുന്ന വ്യര്ത്ഥമായുള്ള ആയുഷ്കാലത്തൊക്കെയും അവന്നു എന്താകുന്നു നല്ലതു എന്നു ആര്ക്കറിയാം? അവന്റെ ശേഷം സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ എന്തു സംഭവിക്കും എന്നു മനുഷ്യനോടു ആര് അറിയിക്കും?

12. For who knows what [is] good for man in [this] life, all the days of the life of his vanity which he causes [to be] as a shadow? for who shall teach the man what shall be after him under the sun?:
