1. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ ഞാന് കണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു തിന്മ ഉണ്ടു; അതു മനുഷ്യര്ക്കും ഭാരമുള്ളതാകുന്നു.

1. There is another bad thing which I have seen under the sun, and it is hard for men:

2. ദൈവം ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്നു ധനവും ഐശ്വര്യവും മാനവും നലകുന്നു; അവന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നതിന്നു ഒന്നിന്നും അവന്നു കുറവില്ല; എങ്കിലും അതു അനുഭവിപ്പാന് ദൈവം അവന്നു അധികാരം കൊടുക്കുന്നില്ല; ഒരു അന്യനത്രേ അതു അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതു; അതു മായയും വല്ലാത്ത വ്യാധിയും തന്നേ.

2. God gives a man riches and many good things and honor, so that he has everything he wants. But He does not allow him to have joy from them, for a stranger has joy from them. This is for nothing, and is very bad.

3. ഒരു മനുഷ്യന് നൂറുമക്കളെ ജനിപ്പിക്കയും ഏറിയ സംവത്സരം ജീവിച്ചു ദീര്ഘായുസ്സായിരിക്കയും ചെയ്തിട്ടും അവന് നന്മ അനുഭവിച്ചു തൃപ്തനാകാതെയും ഒരു ശവസംസ്ക്കാരം പ്രാപിക്കാതെയും പോയാല് ഗര്ഭം അലസിപ്പോയ പിണ്ഡം അവനെക്കാള് നന്നു എന്നു ഞാന് പറയുന്നു.

3. If a man becomes the father of a hundred children and lives many years until he is very old, but he is not happy with good things, and is not buried as he should be, then I say that the child who dies before it is born is shown more favor than he.

4. അതു മായയില് വരുന്നു; അന്ധകാരത്തിലേക്കു പോകുന്നു; അതിന്റെ പേര് അന്ധകാരത്തില് മറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.

4. For this child comes for nothing and goes into darkness, and in darkness its name is covered.

5. സൂര്യനെ അതു കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല അറിഞ്ഞിട്ടുമില്ല; മറ്റേവനെക്കാള് അധികം വിശ്രാമം അതിന്നുണ്ടു.

5. It never sees the sun and it never knows anything. It is better off than he.

6. അവന് ഈരായിരത്താണ്ടു ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നിട്ടും നന്മ അനുഭവിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില് എല്ലാവരും ഒരു സ്ഥലത്തേക്കല്ലയോ പോകുന്നതു?

6. Even if the other man lives a thousand years twice and does not find joy in good things, do not all go to the same place?

7. മനുഷ്യന്റെ പ്രയത്നമൊക്കെയും അവന്റെ വായക്കുവേണ്ടിയാകുന്നു; എങ്കിലും അവന്റെ കൊതിക്കു മതിവരുന്നില്ല.

7. All a man's work is for his mouth, and yet his hunger is not filled.

8. മൂഢനെക്കാള് ജ്ഞാനിക്കു എന്തു വിശേഷതയുള്ളു? പരിജ്ഞാനമുള്ള സാധുവിന്നു ജീവനുള്ളവരുടെ മുമ്പില് നടക്കുന്നതില് എന്തു വിശേഷതയുള്ളു?

8. For what is better for the wise man than for the fool? And what good does the poor man have who knows how to walk among the living?

9. അഭിലാഷത്തിന്റെ സഞ്ചാരത്തെക്കാള് കണ്ണിന്റെ നോട്ടം നല്ലതു; അതും മായയും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നവും അത്രേ.

9. What the eyes see is better than what there is a desire for. This also is for nothing, like trying to catch the wind.

10. ഒരുത്തന് എന്തു തന്നേ ആയിരുന്നാലും അവന്നു പണ്ടേ തന്നേ പേര് വിളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; മനുഷ്യന് എന്താകും എന്നു വിധിച്ചുമിരിക്കുന്നു; തന്നിലും ബലമേറിയവനോടു വാദിപ്പാന് അവന്നു കഴിവില്ല.

10. Whatever has come to be has already been given a name. It is known what man is, and that he cannot argue with one who is stronger than he.

11. മായയെ വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വാക്കു പെരുക്കിയാലും മനുഷ്യന്നു എന്തു ലാഭം?

11. The more words there are, the more they are worth nothing. What good is that to anyone?

12. മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവിതകാലത്തു, അവന് നിഴല് പോലെ കഴിച്ചുകൂട്ടുന്ന വ്യര്ത്ഥമായുള്ള ആയുഷ്കാലത്തൊക്കെയും അവന്നു എന്താകുന്നു നല്ലതു എന്നു ആര്ക്കറിയാം? അവന്റെ ശേഷം സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ എന്തു സംഭവിക്കും എന്നു മനുഷ്യനോടു ആര് അറിയിക്കും?

12. For who knows what is good for a man during his life, during the few years of his living for nothing? He will spend them like a shadow. For who can tell a man what will happen after he is gone under the sun?
