1. ശമൂവേലിന്റെ വചനം എല്ലായിസ്രായേലിന്നും വന്നിട്ടുയിസ്രായേല് ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ നേരെ യുദ്ധത്തിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടു, ഏബെന് -ഏസെരിന്നരികെ പാളയം ഇറങ്ങി, ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് അഫേക്കിലും പാളയമിറങ്ങി.

1. And so it was, when the word of Samuel had reached all Israel, that Israel went forth to meet the Philistines in battle, and they encamped near Eben-ezer, while, the Philistines, encamped in Aphek.

2. ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ നേരെ അണിനിരന്നു; പട പരന്നപ്പോള് യിസ്രായേല് ഫെലിസ്ത്യരോടു തോറ്റുപോയി; സൈന്യത്തില് ഏകദേശം നാലായിരംപേരെ അവര് പോര്ക്കളത്തില് വെച്ചു സംഹരിച്ചു.

2. And the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and, when the battle spread, then was Israel smitten before the Philistines, and there were slain of the army in the field about four thousand men.

3. പടജ്ജനം പാളയത്തില് വന്നാറെ യിസ്രായേല്മൂപ്പന്മാര്ഇന്നു യഹോവ നമ്മെ ഫെലിസ്ത്യരോടു തോലക്കുമാറാക്കിയതു എന്തു? നാം ശീലോവില്നിന്നു യഹോവയുടെ നിയമപെട്ടകം നമ്മുടെ അടുക്കല് വരുത്തുക; അതു നമ്മുടെ ഇടയില് വന്നാല് നമ്മെ നമ്മുടെ ശത്രുക്കളുടെ കയ്യില് നിന്നു രക്ഷിക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. And, when the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath Yahweh smitten us to-day, before the Philistines? Let us fetch unto us, out of Shiloh, the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, that, when it cometh into our midst, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

4. അങ്ങനെ ജനം ശീലോവിലേക്കു ആളയച്ചു. അവര് കെരൂബുകളുടെ മദ്ധ്യേ അധിവസിക്കുന്നവനായ സൈന്യങ്ങളുടെ യഹോവയുടെ നിയമപെട്ടകം അവിടെനിന്നു കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. ഏലിയുടെ രണ്ടു പുത്രന്മാരായ ഹൊഫ്നിയും ഫീനെഹാസും ദൈവത്തിന്റെ നിയമപെട്ടകത്തോടുകൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

4. So the people sent to Shiloh, and bare from thence the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of hosts, who inhabiteth the cherubim, and, there, were the two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, namely, Hophni and Phinehas.

5. യഹോവയുടെ നിമയപെട്ടകം പാളയത്തില് എത്തിയപ്പോള് ഭൂമി കുലുങ്ങുംവണ്ണം യിസ്രായേലെല്ലാം ഉച്ചത്തില് ആര്പ്പിട്ടു.

5. And so it was, when the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came into the camp, that all Israel brake out into a loud shout of joy, so that the earth rang again.

6. ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് ആര്പ്പിന്റെ ഒച്ച കേട്ടിട്ടുഎബ്രായരുടെ പാളയത്തില് ഈ വലിയ ആര്പ്പിന്റെ കാരണം എന്തു എന്നു അന്വേഷിച്ചു, യഹോവയുടെ പെട്ടകം പാളയത്തില് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു ഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

6. And, when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said What meaneth the noise of this loud shout of joy in the camp of the Hebrews? And they learned that, the ark of Yahweh, had come into the camp.

7. ദൈവം പാളയത്തില് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് പറഞ്ഞു ഭയപ്പെട്ടുനമുക്കു അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം! ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു കാര്യം ഇതുവരെ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല.

7. And the Philistines were afraid, for they said God hath come into the camp. And they said Woe to us! for there hath not happened the like of this, heretofore.

8. നമുക്കു അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം! ശക്തിയുള്ള ഈ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കയ്യില്നിന്നു നമ്മെ ആര് രക്ഷിക്കും? മിസ്രയീമ്യരെ മരുഭൂമിയില് സകലവിധബാധകളാലും ബാധിച്ച ദൈവം ഇതു തന്നേ.

8. Woe to us! Who shall rescue us out of the hand of these majestic gods? These, are the gods, who smote the Egyptians with all manner of smiting in the desert!

9. ഫെലിസ്ത്യരേ, ധൈര്യം പൂണ്ടു പുരുഷത്വം കാണിപ്പിന് ; എബ്രായര് നിങ്ങള്ക്കു ദാസന്മാരായിരുന്നതുപോലെ നിങ്ങള് അവര്ക്കും ആകരുതു; പുരുഷത്വം കാണിച്ചു പൊരുതുവിന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

9. Take courage, and quit yourselves like men, ye Philistines, lest ye come into bondage to the Hebrews, as they have been in bondage unto you, therefore must ye quit yourselves like men, and fight.

10. അങ്ങനെ ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് പട തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള് യിസ്രായേല് തോറ്റു; ഔരോരുത്തന് താന്താന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു ഔടി; യിസ്രായേലില് മുപ്പതിനായിരം കാലാള് വീണുപോകത്തക്കവണ്ണം ഒരു മഹാ സംഹാരം ഉണ്ടായി.

10. So the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man to his home; and the slaughter became exceeding great, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

11. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകം പിടിപെട്ടു; ഏലിയുടെ രണ്ടു പുത്രന്മാരായ ഹൊഫ്നിയും ഫീനെഹാസും പട്ടുപോയി.

11. And, the ark of God, was taken, and, the two sons of Eli, were slain, Hophni and Phinehas.

12. പോര്ക്കളത്തില്നിന്നു ഒരു ബെന്യാമീന്യന് വസ്ത്രം കീറിയും തലയില് പൂഴി വാരിയിട്ടുംകൊണ്ടു ഔടി അന്നു തന്നെ ശീലോവില് വന്നു.

12. And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and entered Shiloh on the same day, with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

13. അവന് വരുമ്പോള് ഏലി നോക്കിക്കൊണ്ടു വഴിയരികെ തന്റെ ആസനത്തില് ഇരിക്കയായിരുന്നു; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു അവന്റെ ഹൃദയം വ്യാകുലപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു; ആ മനുഷ്യന് പട്ടണത്തില് എത്തി വസ്തുത പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള് പട്ടണത്തിലെല്ലാം നിലവിളിയായി.

13. And, when he entered, lo! Eli was sitting upon his chair, by the wayside, watching, for his heart was trembling for the ark of God, and, the man, entered to tell the news in the city, and all the city made outcry.

14. ഏലി നിലവിളികേട്ടപ്പോള് ഈ ആരവം എന്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. ആ മനുഷ്യന് ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു വന്നു ഏലിയോടും അറിയിച്ചു.

14. And, when Eli heard the noise of the outcry, he said What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And, the man, hasted, and came, and told Eli.

15. ഏലിയോ തൊണ്ണൂറ്റെട്ടു വയസ്സുള്ളവനും കാണ്മാന് വഹിയാതവണ്ണം കണ്ണു മങ്ങിയവനും ആയിരുന്നു.

15. Now, Eli, was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were fixed, that he could not see.

16. ആ മനുഷ്യന് ഏലിയോടുഞാന് പോര്ക്കളത്തില്നിന്നു വന്നവന് ആകുന്നു; ഇന്നു തന്നേ ഞാന് പോര്ക്കളത്തില്നിന്നു ഔടിപ്പോന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. വര്ത്തമാനം എന്താകുന്നു, മകനേ, എന്നു അവന് ചോദിച്ചു.

16. So the man said unto Eli, I, am he that came in from the army, yea, I, from the army, fled to-day. And he said What is the thing that hath happened, my son?

17. അതിന്നു ആ ദൂതന് യിസ്രായേല് ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ മുമ്പില് തോറ്റോടി; ജനത്തില് ഒരു മഹാസംഹാരം ഉണ്ടായി; നിന്റെ രണ്ടു പുത്രന്മാരായ ഹൊഫ്നിയും ഫീനെഹാസും പട്ടുപോയി; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകവും പിടിപെട്ടുപോയി എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

17. And the bearer of tidings answered, and said Israel hath fled before the Philistines, Moreover also, a great smiting, hath taken place among the people, Moreover also, thy two sons, are slain, Hophni and Phinehas, And, the ark of God, is taken.

18. അവന് ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകത്തിന്റെ വസ്തുത പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള് ഏലി പടിവാതില്ക്കല് ആസനത്തില് നിന്നു പിറകോട്ടു വീണു കഴുത്തൊടിഞ്ഞു മരിച്ചു; അവന് വൃദ്ധനും സ്ഥൂലിച്ചവനും ആയിരുന്നു. അവന് നാല്പതു സംവത്സരം യിസ്രായേലിന്നു ന്യായപാലനം ചെയ്തു.

18. And it came to pass, when he mentioned the ark of God, that he fell from off his seat backwards, at the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died, for, old, was the man, and, heavy, and, he had judged Israel forty years.

19. എന്നാല് അവന്റെ മരുമകള് ഫീനെഹാസിന്റെ ഭാര്യ പ്രസവം അടുത്ത ഗര്ഭിണിയായിരുന്നു; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകം പിടിപെട്ടുപോയതും അമ്മാവിയപ്പനും ഭര്ത്താവും മരിച്ചതും കേട്ടപ്പോള് അവള്ക്കു പ്രസവവേദന തുടങ്ങി; അവള് നിലത്തു വീണു പ്രസവിച്ചു.

19. Now, his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, was with child, ready to give birth, and, when she heard the tidings, as to the taking of the ark of God, and the death of her father-in-law, and her husband, she bowed herself and gave birth, for her pains had seized her.

20. അവള് മരിപ്പാറായപ്പോള് അരികെ നിന്ന സ്ത്രീകള് അവളോടുഭയപ്പെടേണ്ടാ; നീ ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചുവല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. എന്നാല് അവള് ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞില്ല, ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചതുമില്ല.

20. And, about the time of her death, the women that stood by her said: Do not fear, for, to a son, hast thou given birth. But she neither answered nor regarded.

21. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകം പിടിപെട്ടുപോകകൊണ്ടും അമ്മാവിയപ്പനെയും ഭര്ത്താവിനെയും ഔര്ത്തിട്ടുംമഹത്വം യിസ്രായേലില്നിന്നു പൊയ്പോയി എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവള് കുഞ്ഞിന്നു ഈഖാബോദ് എന്നു പേര് ഇട്ടു.

21. And she called the boy I-chabod! saying, Exiled is the glory from Israel, In regard to the taking of the ark of God, and to her father-in-law, and to her husband.

22. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകം പിടിപെട്ടുപോകകൊണ്ടു മഹത്വം യിസ്രായേലില്നിന്നു പൊയ്പോയി എന്നു അവള് പറഞ്ഞു.

22. So she said Exiled is the glory from Israel, For the ark of God hath been taken.
