1. താന് യാക്കോബിന്നു മക്കളെ പ്രസവിക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നു റാഹേല് കണ്ടു തന്റെ സഹോദരിയോടു അസൂയപ്പെട്ടു യാക്കോബിനോടുഎനിക്കു മക്കളെ തരേണം; അല്ലെങ്കില് ഞാന് മരിച്ചുപോകും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

1. When Rachel saw that she was not bearing children for Ya'akov, she envied her sister and said to Ya'akov, 'Give me children, or I will die!'

2. അപ്പോള് യാക്കോബിന്നു റാഹേലിനോടു കോപം ജ്വലിച്ചുനിനക്കു ഗര്ഭഫലം തരാതിരിക്കുന്ന ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാനത്തോ ഞാന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

2. This made Ya'akov angry at Rachel; he answered, 'Am I in God's place? He's the one who is denying you children.'

3. അതിന്നു അവള് എന്റെ ദാസി ബില്ഹാ ഉണ്ടല്ലോ; അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെല്ലുക; അവള് എന്റെ മടിയില് പ്രസവിക്കട്ടെ; അവളാല് എനിക്കും മക്കള് ഉണ്ടാകും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. She said, 'Here is my maid Bilhah. Go, sleep with her, and let her give birth to a child that will be laid on my knees, so that through her I too can build a family.'

4. അങ്ങനെ അവള് തന്റെ ദാസി ബില്ഹയെ അവന്നു ഭാര്യയായി കൊടുത്തു; യാക്കോബ് അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു.

4. So she gave him Bilhah her slave-girl as his wife, and Ya'akov went in and slept with her.

5. ബില്ഹാ ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു യാക്കേബിന്നു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു.

5. Bilhah conceived and bore Ya'akov a son.

6. അപ്പോള് റാഹേല്ദൈവം എനിക്കു ന്യായം നടത്തി എന്റെ അപേക്ഷ കേട്ടു എനിക്കു ഒരു മകനെ തന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അതു കൊണ്ടു അവന്നു ദാന് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

6. Rachel said, 'God has judged in my favor; indeed he has heard me and given me a son.' Therefore she called him Dan [[he judged]].

7. റാഹേലിന്റെ ദാസി ബില്ഹാ പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു യാക്കോബിന്നു രണ്ടാമതൊരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു.

7. Bilhah Rachel's slave-girl conceived again and bore Ya'akov a second son.

8. ഞാന് എന്റെ സഹോദരിയോടു വലിയോരു പോര് പൊരുതു ജയിച്ചുമിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു റാഹേല് പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു നഫ്താലി എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

8. Rachel said, 'I have wrestled mightily with my sister and won,' and called him Naftali [[my wrestling]].

9. തനിക്കു പ്രസവം നിന്നുപോയി എന്നു ലേയാ കണ്ടാറെ തന്റെ ദാസി സില്പയെ വിളിച്ചു അവളെ യാക്കോബിന്നു ഭാര്യയായി കൊടുത്തു.

9. When Le'ah saw that she had stopped having children, she took Zilpah her slave-girl and gave her to Ya'akov as his wife.

10. ലേയയുടെ ദാസി സില്പാ യാക്കോബിന്നു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു.

10. Zilpah Le'ah's slave-girl bore Ya'akov a son;

11. അപ്പോള് ലേയാഭാഗ്യം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു ഗാദ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

11. and Le'ah said, 'Good fortune has come,' calling him Gad [[good fortune]].

12. ലേയയുടെ ദാസി സില്പാ യാക്കോബിന്നു രണ്ടാമതു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു.

12. Zilpah Le'ah's slave-girl bore Ya'akov a second son;

13. ഞാന് ഭാഗ്യവതി; സ്ത്രികള് എന്നെ ഭാഗ്യവതിയെന്നു പറയും എന്നു ലേയാ പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു ആശേര് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

13. and Le'ah said, 'How happy I am! Women will say I am happy!' and called him Asher [[happy]].

14. കോതമ്പുകൊയിത്തുകാലത്തു രൂബേന് പുറപ്പെട്ടു വയലില് ദൂദായിപ്പഴം കണ്ടു തന്റെ അമ്മയായ ലേയയുടെ അടുക്കല് കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. റാഹേല് ലേയയോടുനിന്റെ മകന്റെ ദൂദായിപ്പഴം കുറെ എനിക്കു തരേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

14. During the wheat harvest season Re'uven went and found mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Le'ah. Rachel said to Le'ah, 'Please give me some of your son's mandrakes [[so that I can be fertile]].'

15. അവള് അവളോടുനീ എന്റെ ഭര്ത്താവിനെ എടുത്തതു പോരയോ? എന്റെ മകന്റെ ദൂദായിപ്പഴവും കൂടെ വേണമോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞതിന്നു റാഹേല്ആകട്ടെ; നിന്റെ മകന്റെ ദൂദായിപ്പഴത്തിന്നു വേണ്ടി ഇന്നു രാത്രി അവന് നിന്നോടുകൂടെ ശയിച്ചുകൊള്ളട്ടേ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

15. She answered, 'Isn't it enough that you have taken away my husband? Do you have to take my son's mandrakes too?' Rachel said, 'Very well; in exchange for your son's mandrakes, sleep with him tonight.'

16. യാക്കോബ് വൈകുന്നേരം വയലില്നിന്നു വരുമ്പോള് ലേയാ അവനെ എതിരേറ്റു ചെന്നുനീ എന്റെ അടുക്കല് വരേണം; എന്റെ മകന്റെ ദൂദായിപ്പഴം കൊണ്ടു ഞാന് നിന്നെ കൂലിക്കു വാങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അന്നു രാത്രി അവന് അവളോടുകൂടെ ശയിച്ചു.

16. When Ya'akov came in from the field in the evening, Le'ah went out to meet him and said, 'You have to come and sleep with me, because I've hired you with my son's mandrakes.' So Ya'akov slept with her that night.

17. ദൈവം ലേയയുടെ അപേക്ഷ കേട്ടു; അവള് ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു യാക്കോബിന്നു അഞ്ചാമതു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു.

17. God listened to Le'ah, and she conceived and bore Ya'akov a fifth son.

18. അപ്പോള് ലേയാഞാന് എന്റെ ദാസിയെ എന്റെ ഭര്ത്താവിന്നു കൊടുത്തതുകൊണ്ടു ദൈവം എനിക്കു കൂലി തന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു യിസ്സാഖാര് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

18. Le'ah said, 'God has given me my hire, because I gave my slave-girl to my husband.' So she called him Yissakhar [[hire, reward]].

19. ലേയാ പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു, യാക്കോബിന്നു ആറാമതു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു;

19. Le'ah conceived again and bore a sixth son to Ya'akov.

20. ദൈവം എനിക്കു ഒരു നല്ലദാനം തന്നിരിക്കുന്നു; ഇപ്പോള് എന്റെ ഭര്ത്താവു എന്നോടുകൂടെ വസിക്കും; ഞാന് അവന്നു ആറു മക്കളെ പ്രസവിച്ചുവല്ലോ എന്നു ലേയാ പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു സെബൂലൂന് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

20. Le'ah said, 'God has given me a wonderful gift. Now at last my husband will live with me, since I have borne him six sons.' And she called him Z'vulun [[living together]].

21. അതിന്റെ ശേഷം അവള് ഒരു മകളെ പ്രസവിച്ചു അവള്ക്കു ദീനാ എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

21. After this, she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah [[controversy over rights]].

22. ദൈവം റാഹേലിനെ ഔര്ത്തു; ദൈവം അവളുടെ അപേക്ഷ കേട്ടു അവളുടെ ഗര്ഭത്തെ തുറന്നു.

22. Then God took note of Rachel, heeded her prayer and made her fertile.

23. അവള് ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; ദൈവം എന്റെ നിന്ദ നീക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

23. She conceived, had a son and said, 'God has taken away my disgrace.'

24. യഹോവ എനിക്കു ഇനിയും ഒരു മകനെ തരുമെന്നും പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു യോസേഫ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

24. She called him Yosef [[may he add]], saying, 'May ADONAI add to me another son.'

25. റാഹേല് യോസേഫിനെ പ്രസവിച്ചശേഷം യാക്കോബ് ലാബാനോടുഞാന് എന്റെ സ്ഥലത്തേക്കും ദേശത്തേക്കും പോകുവാന് എന്നെ അയക്കേണം.

25. After Rachel had given birth to Yosef, Ya'akov said to Lavan, 'Send me on my way, so that I can return to my own place, to my own country.

26. ഞാന് നിന്നെ സേവിച്ചതിന്റെ പ്രതിഫലമായ എന്റെ ഭാര്യമാരേയും മക്കളെയും എനിക്കു തരേണം; ഞാന് പോകട്ടെ; ഞാന് നിന്നെ സേവിച്ച സേവ നീ അറിയുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

26. Let me take my wives, for whom I have served you, and my children; and let me go. You know very well how faithfully I have served you.'

27. ലാബാന് അവനോടുനിനക്കു എന്നോടു ദയ ഉണ്ടെങ്കില് പോകരുതേ; നിന്റെ നിമിത്തം യഹോവ എന്നെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു എന്നു എനിക്കു ബോദ്ധ്യമായിരിക്കുന്നു.

27. Lavan answered him, 'If you regard me favorably, then please listen: I have observed the signs that ADONAI has blessed me on account of you.

28. നിനക്കു എന്തു പ്രതിഫലം വേണം എന്നു പറക; ഞാന് തരാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

28. Name your wages,' he said; 'I will pay them.'

29. അവന് അവനോടുഞാന് നിന്നെ എങ്ങനെ സേവിച്ചു എന്നും നിന്റെ ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടം എന്റെ പക്കല് എങ്ങനെ ഇരുന്നു എന്നും നീ അറിയുന്നു.

29. Ya'akov replied, 'You know how faithfully I have served you and how your livestock have prospered under my care.

30. ഞാന് വരുംമുമ്പെ നിനക്കു അല്പമേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു; ഇപ്പോള് അതു അത്യന്തം വര്ദ്ധിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; ഞാന് കാല് വെച്ചേടത്തൊക്കെയും യഹോവ നിന്നെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇനി എന്റെ സ്വന്തഭവനത്തിന്നു വേണ്ടി ഞാന് എപ്പോള് കരുതും എന്നും പറഞ്ഞു.

30. The few you had before I came have increased substantially; ADONAI has blessed you wherever I went. But now, when will I provide for my own household?'

31. ഞാന് നിനക്കു എന്തു തരേണം എന്നു അവന് ചോദിച്ചതിന്നു യാക്കോബ് പറഞ്ഞതുനീ ഒന്നും തരേണ്ടാ; ഈ കാര്യം നീ ചെയ്തുതന്നാല് ഞാന് നിന്റെ ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടത്തെ ഇനിയും മേയിച്ചു പാലിക്കാം.

31. Lavan said, 'What should I give you?' 'Nothing,' answered Ya'akov, 'just do this one thing for me: once more I will pasture your flock and take care of it.

32. ഞാന് ഇന്നു നിന്റെ എല്ലാ കൂട്ടങ്ങളിലും കൂടി കടന്നു, അവയില്നിന്നു പുള്ളിയും മറുവുമുള്ള ആടുകളെ ഒക്കെയും ചെമ്മരിയാടുകളില് കറുത്തതിനെയൊക്കെയും കോലാടുകളില് പുള്ളിയും മറുവുമുള്ളതിനെയും വേര്തിരിക്കാം; അതു എന്റെ പ്രതിഫലമായിരിക്കട്ടെ.

32. I will also go through the flock and pick out every speckled, spotted or brown sheep, and every speckled or spotted goat; these and their offspring will be my wages.

33. നാളെ ഒരിക്കല് എന്റെ പ്രതിഫലം സംബന്ധിച്ചു നീ നോക്കുവാന് വരുമ്പോള് എന്റെ നീതി തെളിവായിരിക്കും; കോലാടുകളില് പുള്ളിയും മറുവുമില്ലാത്തതും ചെമ്മരിയാടുകളില് കറുത്തനിറമില്ലാത്തതും എല്ലാം മോഷ്ടിച്ചതായി എണ്ണാം.

33. And I will let my integrity stand as witness against me in the future: when you come to look over the animals constituting my wages, every goat that isn't speckled or spotted and every sheep that isn't brown will count as stolen by me.'

34. അതിന്നു ലാബാന് നീ പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ ആകട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

34. Lavan replied, 'As you have said, so be it.'

35. അന്നു തന്നേ അവന് വരയും മറുവുമുള്ള മുട്ടാടുകളെയും പുള്ളിയും മറുവുമുള്ള പെണ്കോലാടുകളെ ഒക്കെയും വെണ്മയുള്ളതിനെ ഒക്കെയും ചെമ്മരിയാടുകളില് കറുത്തനിറമുള്ളതിനെ ഒക്കെയും വേര്തിരിച്ചു അവന്റെ പുത്രന്മാരുടെ കയ്യില് ഏല്പിച്ചു.

35. That day Lavan removed the male goats that were streaked or spotted and all the female goats that were speckled or spotted, every one with white on it, and all the brown sheep; turned them over to his sons;

36. അവന് തനിക്കും യാക്കോബിന്നും ഇടയില് മൂന്നു ദിവസത്തെ വഴിയകലം വെച്ചു; ലാബാന്റെ ശേഷമുള്ള ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടങ്ങളെ യാക്കോബ് മേയിച്ചു.

36. and put three days' distance between himself and Ya'akov. Ya'akov fed the rest of Lavan's flocks.

37. എന്നാല് യാക്കോബ് പുന്നവൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെയും ബദാംവൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെയും അരിഞ്ഞില്വൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെയും പച്ചക്കൊമ്പുകളെ എടുത്തു അവയില് വെള്ള കാണത്തക്കവണ്ണം വെള്ളവരയായി തോലുരിച്ചു.

37. Ya'akov took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white streaks on them by peeling off the bark.

38. ആടുകള് കുടിപ്പാന് വന്നപ്പോള് അവന് , താന് തോലുരിച്ച കൊമ്പുകളെ പാത്തികളിലും വെള്ളം പകരുന്ന തൊട്ടികളിലും ആടുകളുടെ മുമ്പില് വെച്ചു; അവ വെള്ളം കുടിപ്പാന് വന്നപ്പോള് ചനയേറ്റു.

38. Then he set the rods he had peeled upright in the watering troughs, so that the animals would see them when they came to drink. And since they bred when they came to drink,

39. ആടുകള് കൊമ്പുകളെ കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടു ചനയേറ്റു വരയും പുള്ളിയും മറുവുമുള്ള കുട്ടികളെ പെറ്റു.

39. the animals mated in sight of the rods and gave birth to streaked, speckled and spotted young.

40. ആ ആട്ടിന് കുട്ടികളെ യാക്കോബ് വേര്തിരിച്ചു ആടുകളെ ലാബാന്റെ ആടുകളില് വരയും മറുവുമുള്ള എല്ലാറ്റിന്നും അഭിമുഖമായി നിര്ത്തി; തന്റെ സ്വന്തകൂട്ടങ്ങളെ ലാബാന്റെ ആടുകളോടു ചേര്ക്കാതെ വേറെയാക്കി.

40. Ya'akov divided the lambs and had the animals mate with the streaked and the brown in the flock of Lavan. He also kept his own livestock separate and did not have them mix with Lavan's flock.

41. ബലമുള്ള ആടുകള് ചനയേലക്കുമ്പോഴൊക്കെയും കൊമ്പുകളെ കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടു ചനയേല്ക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു യാക്കോബ് ആ കൊമ്പുകളെ പാത്തികളില് ആടുകളുടെ കണ്ണിന്നു മുമ്പില് വെച്ചു.

41. Whenever the hardier animals came into heat, Ya'akov would set up the rods in the watering troughs; so that the animals would see them and conceive in front of them;

42. ബലമില്ലാത്ത ആടുകള് ചനയേലക്കുമ്പോള് അവയെ വെച്ചില്ല; അങ്ങനെ ബലമില്ലാത്തവ ലാബാന്നും ബലമുള്ളവ യാക്കോബിന്നും ആയിത്തീര്ന്നു.

42. but he didn't set up the rods in front of the weaker animals. Thus the more feeble were Lavan's and the stronger Ya'akov's.

43. അവന് മഹാസമ്പന്നനായി അവന്നു വളരെ ആടുകളും ദാസീദാസന്മാരും ഒട്ടകങ്ങളും കഴുതകളും ഉണ്ടാകയും ചെയ്തു.

43. In this way the man became very rich and had large flocks, along with male and female slaves, camels and donkeys.
