1. ആ കാലത്തു ലോകം ഒക്കെയും പേര്വഴി ചാര്ത്തേണം എന്നു ഔഗുസ്തൊസ് കൈസരുടെ ഒരു ആജ്ഞ പുറപ്പെട്ടു.

1. IN THOSE days it occurred that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole Roman empire should be registered.

2. കുറേന്യൊസ് സുറിയനാടു വാഴുമ്പോള് ഈ ഒന്നാമത്തെ ചാര്ത്തല് ഉണ്ടായി.

2. This was the first enrollment, and it was made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.

3. എല്ലാവരും ചാര്ത്തപ്പെടേണ്ടതിന്നു താന്താന്റെ പട്ടണത്തിലേക്കു യാത്രയായി.

3. And all the people were going to be registered, each to his own city or town.

4. അങ്ങനെ യോസേഫും ദാവീദിന്റെ ഗൃഹത്തിലും കുലത്തിലും ഉള്ളവന് ആകകൊണ്ടു തനിക്കു വിവാഹം നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരുന്ന മറിയ എന്ന ഗര്ഭിണിയായ ഭാര്യയോടും കൂടെ ചാര്ത്തപ്പെടേണ്ടതിന്നു ഗലീലയിലെ നസറത്ത് പട്ടണം വിട്ടു,

4. And Joseph also went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the town of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,

5. യെഹൂദ്യയില് ബേത്ളേഹെം എന്ന ദാവീദിന് പട്ടണത്തിലേക്കു പോയി.

5. To be enrolled with Mary, his espoused (married) wife, who was about to become a mother. [Matt. 1:18-25.]

6. അവര് അവിടെ ഇരിക്കുമ്പോള് അവള്ക്കു പ്രസവത്തിനുള്ള കാലം തികെഞ്ഞു.

6. And while they were there, the time came for her delivery,

7. അവള് ആദ്യജാതനായ മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു, ശീലകള് ചുറ്റി വഴിയമ്പലത്തില് അവര്ക്കും സ്ഥലം ഇല്ലായ്കയാല് പശുത്തൊട്ടിയില് കിടത്തി.

7. And she gave birth to her Son, her Firstborn; and she wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room or place for them in the inn.

8. അന്നു ആ പ്രദേശത്തു ഇടയന്മാര് രാത്രിയില് ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടത്തെ കാവല്കാത്തു വെളിയില് പാര്ത്തിരുന്നു.

8. And in that vicinity there were shepherds living [out under the open sky] in the field, watching [in shifts] over their flock by night.

9. അപ്പോള് കര്ത്താവിന്റെ ഒരു ദൂതന് അവരുടെ അരികെ നിന്നു, കര്ത്താവിന്റെ തേജസ്സ് അവരെ ചുറ്റിമിന്നി, അവര് ഭയപരവശരായിതീര്ന്നു.

9. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord flashed and shone all about them, and they were terribly frightened.

10. ദൂതന് അവരോടുഭയപ്പെടേണ്ടാ; സര്വ്വജനത്തിന്നും ഉണ്ടാവാനുള്ളോരു മഹാസന്തോഷം ഞാന് നിങ്ങളോടു സുവിശേഷിക്കുന്നു.

10. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people.

11. കര്ത്താവായ ക്രിസ്തു എന്ന രക്ഷിതാവു ഇന്നു ദാവീദിന്റെ പട്ടണത്തില് നിങ്ങള്ക്കായി ജനിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

11. For to you is born this day in the town of David a Savior, Who is Christ (the Messiah) the Lord! [Mic. 5:2.]

12. നിങ്ങള്ക്കു അടയാളമോ; ശീലകള് ചുറ്റി പശുത്തൊട്ടിയില് കിടക്കുന്ന ഒരു ശിശുവിനെ നിങ്ങള് കാണും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

12. And this will be a sign for you [by which you will recognize Him]: you will find [after searching] a Baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. [I Sam. 2:34; II Kings 19:29; Isa. 7:14.]

13. പെട്ടെന്നു സ്വര്ഗ്ഗീയ സൈന്യത്തിന്റെ ഒരു സംഘം ദൂതനോടു ചേര്ന്നു ദൈവത്തെ പുകഴ്ത്തി.

13. Then suddenly there appeared with the angel an army of the troops of heaven (a heavenly knighthood), praising God and saying,

14. “അത്യുന്നതങ്ങളില് ദൈവത്തിന്നു മഹത്വം; ഭൂമിയില് ദൈവപ്രസാദമുള്ള മനുഷ്യര്ക്കും സമാധാനം” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

14. Glory to God in the highest [heaven], and on earth peace among men with whom He is well pleased [men of goodwill, of His favor].

15. ദൂതന്മാര് അവരെ വിട്ടു സ്വര്ഗ്ഗത്തില് പോയശേഷം ഇടയന്മാര്നാം ബേത്ത്ളേഹെമോളം ചെന്നു കര്ത്താവു നമ്മോടു അറിയിച്ച ഈ സംഭവം കാണേണം എന്നു തമ്മില് പറഞഞു.

15. When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing (saying) that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.

16. അവര് ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു ചെന്നു, മറിയയെയും യോസേഫിനെയും പശുത്തൊട്ടിയില് കിടക്കുന്ന ശിശുവിനെയും കണ്ടു.

16. So they went with haste and [by searching] found Mary and Joseph, and the Baby lying in a manger.

17. കണ്ടശേഷം ഈ പൈതലിനെക്കുറിച്ചു തങ്ങളോടു പറഞ്ഞ വാക്കു അറിയിച്ചു.

17. And when they saw it, they made known what had been told them concerning this Child,

18. കേട്ടവര് എല്ലാവരും ഇടയന്മാര് പറഞ്ഞതിനെക്കുറിച്ചു ആശ്ചര്യപ്പെട്ടു.

18. And all who heard it were astounded and marveled at what the shepherds told them.

19. മറിയ ഈ വാര്ത്ത ഒക്കെയും ഹൃദയത്തില് സംഗ്രഹിച്ചു ധ്യാനിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

19. But Mary was keeping within herself all these things (sayings), weighing and pondering them in her heart.

20. തങ്ങളോടു അറിയിച്ചതുപോലെ ഇടയന്മാര് കേട്ടതും കണ്ടതുമായ എല്ലാറ്റിനെയും കുറിച്ചു ദൈവത്തെ മഹത്വപ്പെടുത്തിയും പുകഴ്ത്തിയും കൊണ്ടു മടങ്ങിപ്പോയി.

20. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, just as it had been told them.

21. പരിച്ഛേദന കഴിപ്പാനുള്ള എട്ടു ദിവസം തികെഞ്ഞപ്പോള് അവന് ഗര്ഭത്തില് ഉല്പാദിക്കുംമുമ്പെ ദൂതന് പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ അവന്നു യേശു എന്നു പേര് വിളിച്ചു.

21. And at the end of eight days, when [the Baby] was to be circumcised, He was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

23. As it is written in the Law of the Lord, Every [firstborn] male that opens the womb shall be set apart and dedicated and called holy to the Lord--[Exod. 13:1, 2, 12; Num. 8:17.]

24. അവനെ കര്ത്താവിന്നു അര്പ്പിപ്പാനും ഒരു ഇണ കുറപ്രാവിനെയോ രണ്ടു പ്രാകൂഞ്ഞിനെയോ കര്ത്താവിന്റെ ന്യായപ്രമാണത്തില് കല്പിച്ചതുപോലെ യാഗം കഴിപ്പാനും അവര് അവനെ യെരൂശലേമിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടുപോയി.

24. And [they came also] to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord: a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. [Lev. 12:6-8.]

25. യെരൂശലേമില് ശിമ്യോന് എന്നു പേരുള്ളൊരു മനുഷ്യന് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു; ഈ മനുഷ്യന് നീതിമാനും യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ ആശ്വാസത്തിന്നായി കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നവനും ആയിരുന്നു; പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവും അവന്റെ മേല് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

25. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout [cautiously and carefully observing the divine Law], and looking for the Consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

26. കര്ത്താവിന്റെ ക്രിസ്തുവിനെ കാണുംമുമ്പെ മരണം കാണ്കയില്ല എന്നു പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിനാല് അവന്നു അരുളപ്പാടു ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

26. And it had been divinely revealed (communicated) to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

27. അവന് ആത്മനിയോഗത്താല് ദൈവാലയത്തില് ചെന്നു. യേശു എന്ന പൈതലിന്നു വേണ്ടി ന്യായപ്രമാണത്തിന്റെ ചട്ടപ്രകാരം ചെയ്വാന് അമ്മയപ്പന്മാര് അവനെ അകത്തു കൊണ്ടുചെന്നപ്പോള്

27. And prompted by the [Holy] Spirit, he came into the temple [enclosure]; and when the parents brought in the little child Jesus to do for Him what was customary according to the Law,

28. അവന് അവനെ കയ്യില് ഏന്തി ദൈവത്തെ പുകഴ്ത്തി

28. [Simeon] took Him up in his arms and praised and thanked God and said,

29. “ഇപ്പോള് നാഥാ തിരുവചനം പോലെ നീ അടിയനെ സമാധാനത്തോടെ വിട്ടയക്കുന്നു.

29. And now, Lord, You are releasing Your servant to depart (leave this world) in peace, according to Your word.

30. ജാതികള്ക്കു വെളിപ്പെടുവാനുള്ള പ്രകാശവും നിന്റെ ജനമായ യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ മഹത്വവുമായി

30. For with my [own] eyes I have seen Your Salvation, [Isa. 52:10.]

31. നീ സകല ജാതികളുടെയും മുമ്പില് ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്ന നിന്റെ രക്ഷയെ

31. Which You have ordained and prepared before (in the presence of) all peoples,

32. എന്റെ കണ്ണു കണ്ടുവല്ലോ” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

32. A Light for revelation to the Gentiles [to disclose what was before unknown] and [to bring] praise and honor and glory to Your people Israel. [Isa. 42:6; 49:6.]

33. ഇങ്ങനെ അവനെക്കുറിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞതില് അവന്റെ അപ്പനും അമ്മയും ആശ്ചര്യപ്പെട്ടു.

33. And His [legal] father and [His] mother were marveling at what was said about Him.

34. പിന്നെ ശിമ്യോന് അവരെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു അവന്റെ അമ്മയായ മറിയയോടുഅനേകഹൃദയങ്ങളിലെ വിചാരം വെളിപ്പെടേണ്ടതിന്നു ഇവനെ യിസ്രായേലില് പലരുടെയും വീഴ്ചെയക്കും എഴുന്നേല്പിന്നും മറുത്തുപറയുന്ന അടയാളത്തിന്നുമായി വെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

34. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, Behold, this Child is appointed and destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against--[Isa. 8:14, 15.]

35. നിന്റെ സ്വന്തപ്രാണനില്കൂടിയും ഒരു വാള് കടക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

35. And a sword will pierce through your own soul also--that the secret thoughts and purposes of many hearts may be brought out and disclosed.

36. ആശേര് ഗോത്രത്തില് ഫനൂവേലിന്റെ മകളായ ഹന്നാ എന്നൊരു പ്രവാചകി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു; അവള് കന്യാകാലത്തില് പിന്നെ ഭര്ത്താവിനോടുകൂടെ ഏഴു സംവത്സരം കഴിച്ചു എണ്പത്തുനാലു സംവത്സരം വിധവയും വളരെ വയസ്സു ചെന്നവളുമായി

36. And there was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old, having lived with her husband seven years from her maidenhood, [Josh. 19:24.]

37. ദൈവാലയം വിട്ടു പിരിയാതെ ഉപവാസത്തോടും പ്രാര്ത്ഥനയോടും കൂടെ രാവും പകലും ആരാധന ചെയ്തു പോന്നു.

37. And as a widow even for eighty-four years. She did not go out from the temple enclosure, but was worshiping night and day with fasting and prayer.

38. ആ നാഴികയില് അവളും അടുത്തുനിന്നു ദൈവത്തെ സ്തുതിച്ചു, യെരൂശലേമിന്റെ വീണ്ടെടുപ്പിനെ കാത്തിരുന്ന എല്ലാവരോടും അവനെക്കുറിച്ചു പ്രസ്താവിച്ചു.

38. And she too came up at that same hour, and she returned thanks to God and talked of [Jesus] to all who were looking for the redemption (deliverance) of Jerusalem.

39. കര്ത്താവിന്റെ ന്യായപ്രമാണത്തില് കല്പിച്ചുരിക്കുന്നതൊക്കെയും നിവര്ത്തിച്ചശേഷം അവര് ഗലീലയില് തങ്ങളുടെ പട്ടണമായ നസറത്തിലേക്കു മടങ്ങിപ്പോയി.

39. And when they had done everything according to the Law of the Lord, they went back into Galilee to their own town, Nazareth.

40. പൈതല് വളര്ന്നു ജ്ഞാനം നിറഞ്ഞു, ആത്മാവില് ബലപ്പെട്ടുപോന്നു; ദൈവകൃപയും അവന്മേല് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

40. And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace (favor and spiritual blessing) of God was upon Him. [Judg. 13:24; I Sam. 2:26.]

41. അവന്റെ അമ്മയപ്പന്മാര് ആണ്ടുതോറും പെസഹപെരുനാളിന്നു യെരൂശലേമിലേക്കു പോകും.

41. Now His parents went to Jerusalem every year to the Passover Feast. [Deut. 16:1-8; Exod. 23:15.]

42. And when He was twelve years [old], they went up, as was their custom.

43. പെരുനാള് കഴിഞ്ഞു മടങ്ങിപ്പോരുമ്പോള് ബാലനായ യേശു യെരൂശലേമില് താമസിച്ചു; അമ്മയപ്പന്മാരോ അറിഞ്ഞില്ല.

43. And when the Feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem. Now His parents did not know this,

44. സഹയാത്രക്കാരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തില് ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും എന്നു അവര് ഊഹിച്ചിട്ടു ഒരു ദിവസത്തെ വഴി പോന്നു; പിന്നെ അവനെ ബന്ധുക്കളുടെയും പരിചയക്കാരുടെയും ഇടയില് തിരഞ്ഞു.

44. But, supposing Him to be in the caravan, they traveled on a day's journey; and [then] they sought Him [diligently, looking up and down for Him] among their kinsfolk and acquaintances.

45. കാണാഞ്ഞിട്ടു അവനെ അന്വേഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു യെരൂശലേമിലേക്കു മടങ്ങിപ്പോയി.

45. And when they failed to find Him, they went back to Jerusalem, looking for Him [up and down] all the way.

46. മൂന്നു നാള് കഴിഞ്ഞശേഷം അവന് ദൈവാലയത്തില് ഉപദേഷ്ടാക്കന്മാരുടെ നടുവില് ഇരിക്കുന്നതും അവരുടെ ഉപദേശം കേള്ക്കയും അവരോടു ചോദിക്കയും ചെയ്യുന്നതും കണ്ടു.

46. After three days they found Him [came upon Him] in the [court of the] temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

47. അവന്റെ വാക്കു കേട്ടവര്ക്കെല്ലാവര്ക്കും അവന്റെ വിവേകത്തിലും ഉത്തരങ്ങളിലും വിസ്മയം തോന്നി. അവനെ കണ്ടിട്ടു അവര് അതിശയിച്ചു;

47. And all who heard Him were astonished and overwhelmed with bewildered wonder at His intelligence and understanding and His replies.

48. അമ്മ അവനോടുമകനേ, ഞങ്ങളോടു ഇങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തതു എന്തു? നിന്റെ അപ്പനും ഞാനും വ്യസനിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു നിന്നെ തിരഞ്ഞു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

48. And when they [Joseph and Mary] saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, Child, why have You treated us like this? Here Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You [distressed and tormented].

49. അവന് അവരോടുഎന്നെ തിരഞ്ഞതു എന്തിന്നു? എന്റെ പിതാവിന്നുള്ളതില് ഞാന് ഇരിക്കേണ്ടതു എന്നു നിങ്ങള് അറിയുന്നില്ലയോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

49. And He said to them, How is it that you had to look for Me? Did you not see and know that it is necessary [as a duty] for Me to be in My Father's house and [occupied] about My Father's business?

50. അവന് തങ്ങളോടു പറഞ്ഞ വാക്കു അവര് ഗ്രഹിച്ചില്ല.

50. But they did not comprehend what He was saying to them.

51. പിന്നെ അവന് അവരോടുകൂടെ ഇറങ്ങി, നസറെത്തില് വന്നു അവര്ക്കും കീഴടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. ഈ കാര്യങ്ങള് എല്ലാം അവന്റെ അമ്മ ഹൃദയത്തില് സംഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

51. And He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was [habitually] obedient to them; and his mother kept and closely and persistently guarded all these things in her heart.

52. യേശുവോ ജ്ഞാനത്തിലും വളര്ച്ചയിലും ദൈവത്തിന്റെയും മനുഷ്യരുടെയും കൃപയിലും മുതിര്ന്നു വന്നു.

52. And Jesus increased in wisdom (in broad and full understanding) and in stature and years, and in favor with God and man.
