1. ശമൂവേലിന്റെ വചനം എല്ലായിസ്രായേലിന്നും വന്നിട്ടുയിസ്രായേല് ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ നേരെ യുദ്ധത്തിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടു, ഏബെന് -ഏസെരിന്നരികെ പാളയം ഇറങ്ങി, ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് അഫേക്കിലും പാളയമിറങ്ങി.

1. So the word of Sh'mu'el came to all Isra'el. Isra'el went out to fight against the P'lishtim, setting up camp at Even-'Ezer, while the P'lishtim camped at Afek.

2. ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് യിസ്രായേലിന്റെ നേരെ അണിനിരന്നു; പട പരന്നപ്പോള് യിസ്രായേല് ഫെലിസ്ത്യരോടു തോറ്റുപോയി; സൈന്യത്തില് ഏകദേശം നാലായിരംപേരെ അവര് പോര്ക്കളത്തില് വെച്ചു സംഹരിച്ചു.

2. The P'lishtim drew up in battle formation against Isra'el. The battle was fierce, and Isra'el was beaten by the P'lishtim- they killed about four thousand soldiers on the battlefield.

3. പടജ്ജനം പാളയത്തില് വന്നാറെ യിസ്രായേല്മൂപ്പന്മാര്ഇന്നു യഹോവ നമ്മെ ഫെലിസ്ത്യരോടു തോലക്കുമാറാക്കിയതു എന്തു? നാം ശീലോവില്നിന്നു യഹോവയുടെ നിയമപെട്ടകം നമ്മുടെ അടുക്കല് വരുത്തുക; അതു നമ്മുടെ ഇടയില് വന്നാല് നമ്മെ നമ്മുടെ ശത്രുക്കളുടെ കയ്യില് നിന്നു രക്ഷിക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. When the army had returned to camp, the leaders of Isra'el asked, 'Why has ADONAI defeated us today before the P'lishtim? Let's bring the ark for the covenant of ADONAI from Shiloh to us, so that he will come among us and save us from our enemies.'

4. അങ്ങനെ ജനം ശീലോവിലേക്കു ആളയച്ചു. അവര് കെരൂബുകളുടെ മദ്ധ്യേ അധിവസിക്കുന്നവനായ സൈന്യങ്ങളുടെ യഹോവയുടെ നിയമപെട്ടകം അവിടെനിന്നു കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. ഏലിയുടെ രണ്ടു പുത്രന്മാരായ ഹൊഫ്നിയും ഫീനെഹാസും ദൈവത്തിന്റെ നിയമപെട്ടകത്തോടുകൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

4. So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark for the covenant of ADONAI-[Tzva'ot], who is present above the [k'ruvim.] The two sons of 'Eli, Hofni and Pinchas, were there with the ark for the covenant of God.

5. യഹോവയുടെ നിമയപെട്ടകം പാളയത്തില് എത്തിയപ്പോള് ഭൂമി കുലുങ്ങുംവണ്ണം യിസ്രായേലെല്ലാം ഉച്ചത്തില് ആര്പ്പിട്ടു.

5. When the ark for the covenant of ADONAI entered the camp, all Isra'el gave a mighty shout that resounded through the land.

6. ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് ആര്പ്പിന്റെ ഒച്ച കേട്ടിട്ടുഎബ്രായരുടെ പാളയത്തില് ഈ വലിയ ആര്പ്പിന്റെ കാരണം എന്തു എന്നു അന്വേഷിച്ചു, യഹോവയുടെ പെട്ടകം പാളയത്തില് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു ഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

6. On hearing the shout, the P'lishtim asked, 'What does this great shout in the Hebrews' camp mean?' Then they realized that the ark of ADONAI had arrived in the camp,

7. ദൈവം പാളയത്തില് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് പറഞ്ഞു ഭയപ്പെട്ടുനമുക്കു അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം! ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു കാര്യം ഇതുവരെ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല.

7. and the P'lishtim became afraid. They said, 'God has entered the camp! We're lost! There was no such thing yesterday or the day before.

8. നമുക്കു അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം! ശക്തിയുള്ള ഈ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കയ്യില്നിന്നു നമ്മെ ആര് രക്ഷിക്കും? മിസ്രയീമ്യരെ മരുഭൂമിയില് സകലവിധബാധകളാലും ബാധിച്ച ദൈവം ഇതു തന്നേ.

8. We're lost! Who will rescue us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods that completely overthrew the Egyptians in the desert.

9. ഫെലിസ്ത്യരേ, ധൈര്യം പൂണ്ടു പുരുഷത്വം കാണിപ്പിന് ; എബ്രായര് നിങ്ങള്ക്കു ദാസന്മാരായിരുന്നതുപോലെ നിങ്ങള് അവര്ക്കും ആകരുതു; പുരുഷത്വം കാണിച്ചു പൊരുതുവിന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

9. Be strong; and behave like men, you P'lishtim; so that you won't become slaves to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Behave like men, and fight!'

10. അങ്ങനെ ഫെലിസ്ത്യര് പട തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള് യിസ്രായേല് തോറ്റു; ഔരോരുത്തന് താന്താന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു ഔടി; യിസ്രായേലില് മുപ്പതിനായിരം കാലാള് വീണുപോകത്തക്കവണ്ണം ഒരു മഹാ സംഹാരം ഉണ്ടായി.

10. The P'lishtim fought, Isra'el was defeated, and every man fled to his tent. It was a terrible slaughter- 30,000 of Isra'el's foot soldiers fell.

11. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകം പിടിപെട്ടു; ഏലിയുടെ രണ്ടു പുത്രന്മാരായ ഹൊഫ്നിയും ഫീനെഹാസും പട്ടുപോയി.

11. Moreover, the ark of God was captured; and the two sons of 'Eli, Hofni and Pinchas, died.

12. പോര്ക്കളത്തില്നിന്നു ഒരു ബെന്യാമീന്യന് വസ്ത്രം കീറിയും തലയില് പൂഴി വാരിയിട്ടുംകൊണ്ടു ഔടി അന്നു തന്നെ ശീലോവില് വന്നു.

12. One of the soldiers, a man from Binyamin, ran and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes torn and earth on his head [[as a sign of mourning]].

13. അവന് വരുമ്പോള് ഏലി നോക്കിക്കൊണ്ടു വഴിയരികെ തന്റെ ആസനത്തില് ഇരിക്കയായിരുന്നു; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു അവന്റെ ഹൃദയം വ്യാകുലപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു; ആ മനുഷ്യന് പട്ടണത്തില് എത്തി വസ്തുത പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള് പട്ടണത്തിലെല്ലാം നിലവിളിയായി.

13. As he arrived, 'Eli was sitting on his seat by the road, watching; because he was trembling with anxiety over the ark of God. When the man entered the city and told the news, the whole city began crying out.

14. ഏലി നിലവിളികേട്ടപ്പോള് ഈ ആരവം എന്തു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. ആ മനുഷ്യന് ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു വന്നു ഏലിയോടും അറിയിച്ചു.

14. On hearing the cries, 'Eli asked, 'What does this uproar mean?' So the man hurried, came to 'Eli and told him.

15. ഏലിയോ തൊണ്ണൂറ്റെട്ടു വയസ്സുള്ളവനും കാണ്മാന് വഹിയാതവണ്ണം കണ്ണു മങ്ങിയവനും ആയിരുന്നു.

15. 'Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his gaze was fixed, because he was blind.

16. ആ മനുഷ്യന് ഏലിയോടുഞാന് പോര്ക്കളത്തില്നിന്നു വന്നവന് ആകുന്നു; ഇന്നു തന്നേ ഞാന് പോര്ക്കളത്തില്നിന്നു ഔടിപ്പോന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. വര്ത്തമാനം എന്താകുന്നു, മകനേ, എന്നു അവന് ചോദിച്ചു.

16. The man said to 'Eli, 'I'm the soldier that came; I escaped today from the battlefield.' He asked, 'How did things go, my son?'

17. അതിന്നു ആ ദൂതന് യിസ്രായേല് ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ മുമ്പില് തോറ്റോടി; ജനത്തില് ഒരു മഹാസംഹാരം ഉണ്ടായി; നിന്റെ രണ്ടു പുത്രന്മാരായ ഹൊഫ്നിയും ഫീനെഹാസും പട്ടുപോയി; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകവും പിടിപെട്ടുപോയി എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

17. The one who had come with the news answered, 'Isra'el fled before the P'lishtim, and there was a terrible slaughter among the people. Your two sons, Hofni and Pinchas, also are dead; and the ark of God was captured.

18. അവന് ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകത്തിന്റെ വസ്തുത പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള് ഏലി പടിവാതില്ക്കല് ആസനത്തില് നിന്നു പിറകോട്ടു വീണു കഴുത്തൊടിഞ്ഞു മരിച്ചു; അവന് വൃദ്ധനും സ്ഥൂലിച്ചവനും ആയിരുന്നു. അവന് നാല്പതു സംവത്സരം യിസ്രായേലിന്നു ന്യായപാലനം ചെയ്തു.

18. As soon as he mentioned what had happened to the ark of God, 'Eli fell backward off his seat next to the gate, broke his neck and died; for he was an old man, and heavy. He had judged Isra'el forty years.

19. എന്നാല് അവന്റെ മരുമകള് ഫീനെഹാസിന്റെ ഭാര്യ പ്രസവം അടുത്ത ഗര്ഭിണിയായിരുന്നു; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകം പിടിപെട്ടുപോയതും അമ്മാവിയപ്പനും ഭര്ത്താവും മരിച്ചതും കേട്ടപ്പോള് അവള്ക്കു പ്രസവവേദന തുടങ്ങി; അവള് നിലത്തു വീണു പ്രസവിച്ചു.

19. His daughter-in-law, Pinchas's wife, was pregnant and near delivery-time. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and husband were dead, she went into abnormal labor, bent over and gave birth.

20. അവള് മരിപ്പാറായപ്പോള് അരികെ നിന്ന സ്ത്രീകള് അവളോടുഭയപ്പെടേണ്ടാ; നീ ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചുവല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. എന്നാല് അവള് ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞില്ല, ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചതുമില്ല.

20. As she was dying, the women standing by her said to her, 'Don't be afraid, because you have given birth to a son.' But she didn't answer or show any sign of recognition.

21. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകം പിടിപെട്ടുപോകകൊണ്ടും അമ്മാവിയപ്പനെയും ഭര്ത്താവിനെയും ഔര്ത്തിട്ടുംമഹത്വം യിസ്രായേലില്നിന്നു പൊയ്പോയി എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവള് കുഞ്ഞിന്നു ഈഖാബോദ് എന്നു പേര് ഇട്ടു.

21. She named the child I-Khavod [[without glory]], saying, 'The glory has departed from Isra'el'; because the ark of God had been captured, and because of her father-in-law and husband.

22. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പെട്ടകം പിടിപെട്ടുപോകകൊണ്ടു മഹത്വം യിസ്രായേലില്നിന്നു പൊയ്പോയി എന്നു അവള് പറഞ്ഞു.

22. She said, 'The glory of Isra'el has gone into exile, because the ark of God has been captured.'
