1. അക്കാലത്തു യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരെ വിട്ടു ഹീരാ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു അദുല്ലാമ്യന്റെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു;

1. About that time, Judah separated from his brothers and hooked up with a man in Adullam named Hirah.

2. അവിടെ ശൂവാ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു കനാന്യന്റെ മകളെ കണ്ടു; അവളെ പരിഗ്രഹിച്ചു അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു.

2. While there, Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua. He married her, they went to bed,

3. she became pregnant and had a son named Er.

4. She got pregnant again and had a son named Onan.

5. അവള് പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന്നു ശേലാ എന്നു പേരിട്ടു. അവള് ഇവനെ പ്രസവിച്ചപ്പോള് അവന് കെസീബില് ആയിരുന്നു.

5. She had still another son; she named this one Shelah. They were living at Kezib when she had him.

6. യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ ആദ്യജാതനായ ഏരിന്നു താമാര് എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു ഭാര്യയെ എടുത്തു.

6. Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn. Her name was Tamar.

7. യെഹൂദയുടെ ആദ്യജാതനായ ഏര് യഹോവേക്കു അനിഷ്ടനായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു യഹോവ അവനെ മരിപ്പിച്ചു.

7. But Judah's firstborn, Er, grievously offended GOD and GOD took his life.

8. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാ ഔനാനോടുനിന്റെ ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു അവളോടു ദേവരധര്മ്മം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു, ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ പേര്ക്കും സന്തതിയെ ഉളവാക്കുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. So Judah told Onan, 'Go and sleep with your brother's widow; it's the duty of a brother-in-law to keep your brother's line alive.'

9. എന്നാല് ആ സന്തതി തന്റേതായിരിക്കയില്ല എന്നു ഔനാന് അറികകൊണ്ടു ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നപ്പോള് ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്നു സന്തതിയെ കൊടുക്കാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു നിലത്തു വീഴ്ത്തിക്കളഞ്ഞു.

9. But Onan knew that the child wouldn't be his, so whenever he slept with his brother's widow he spilled his semen on the ground so he wouldn't produce a child for his brother.

10. അവന് ചെയ്തതു യഹോവേക്കു അനിഷ്ടമായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവന് ഇവനെയും മരിപ്പിച്ചു.

10. GOD was much offended by what he did and also took his life.

11. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ മരുമകളായ താമാരോടുഎന്റെ മകന് ശേലാ പ്രാപ്തിയാകുവോളം നീ അപ്പന്റെ വീട്ടില് വിധവയായി പാര്ക്ക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; ഇവനും സഹോദരന്മാരെപ്പോലെ മരിച്ചുപോകരുതു എന്നു അവന് വിചാരിച്ചു; അങ്ങനെ താമാര് അപ്പന്റെ വീട്ടില്പോയി പാര്ത്തു.

11. So Judah stepped in and told his daughter-in-law Tamar, 'Live as a widow at home with your father until my son Shelah grows up.' He was worried that Shelah would also end up dead, just like his brothers. So Tamar went to live with her father.

12. കുറെ കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടു ശൂവയുടെ മകള് യെഹൂദയുടെ ഭാര്യ മരിച്ചു; യെഹൂദയുടെ ദുഃഖം മാറിയശേഷം അവന് തന്റെ സ്നേഹിതന് അദുല്ലാമ്യനായ ഹീരയോടുകൂടെ തന്റെ ആടുകളെ രോമം കത്രിക്കുന്ന അടിയന്തരത്തിന്നു പോയി.

12. Time passed. Judah's wife, Shua's daughter, died. When the time of mourning was over, Judah with his friend Hirah of Adullam went to Timnah for the sheep shearing.

13. നിന്റെ അമ്മായപ്പന് തന്റെ ആടുകളെ രോമം കത്രിക്കുന്ന അടിയന്തരത്തിന്നു തിമ്നെക്കു പോകുന്നു എന്നു താമാരിന്നു അറിവു കിട്ടി.

13. Tamar was told, 'Your father-in-law has gone to Timnah to shear his sheep.'

14. ശേലാ പ്രാപ്തിയായിട്ടും തന്നെ അവന്നു ഭാര്യയായി കൊടുത്തില്ല എന്നു കണ്ടിട്ടു അവള് വൈധവ്യവസ്ത്രം മാറ്റിവെച്ചു, ഒരു മൂടുപടം മൂടി പുതെച്ചു തിമ്നെക്കു പോകുന്ന വഴിക്കുള്ള എനയീംപട്ടണത്തിന്റെ ഗോപുരത്തില് ഇരുന്നു.

14. She took off her widow's clothes, put on a veil to disguise herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim which is on the road to Timnah. She realized by now that even though Shelah was grown up, she wasn't going to be married to him.

15. യെഹൂദാ അവളെ കണ്ടപ്പോള് അവള് മുഖം മൂടിയിരുന്നതു കൊണ്ടു ഒരു വേശ്യ എന്നു നിരൂപിച്ചു.

15. Judah saw her and assumed she was a prostitute since she had veiled her face.

16. അവന് വഴിയരികെ അവളുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കു തിരിഞ്ഞുതന്റെ മരുമകള് എന്നു അറിയാതെവരിക, ഞാന് നിന്റെ അടുക്കല് വരട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. എന്റെ അടുക്കല് വരുന്നതിന്നു നീ എനിക്കു എന്തു തരും എന്നു അവള് ചോദിച്ചു.

16. He left the road and went over to her. He said, 'Let me sleep with you.' He had no idea that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, 'What will you pay me?'

17. ഞാന് ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടത്തില് നിന്നു ഒരു കോലാട്ടിന് കുട്ടിയെ നിനക്കു കൊടുത്തയക്കാം എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു. നീ കൊടുത്തയക്കുവോളത്തിന്നു ഒരു പണയം തരുമോ എന്നു അവള് ചോദിച്ചു.

17. 'I'll send you,' he said, 'a kid goat from the flock.' She said, 'Not unless you give me a pledge until you send it.'

18. എന്തു പണയം തരേണം എന്നു അവന് ചോദിച്ചതിന്നു നിന്റെ മുദ്രമോതിരവും മോതിരച്ചരടും നിന്റെ കയ്യിലെ വടിയും എന്നു അവള് പറഞ്ഞു. ഇവ അവള്ക്കു കൊടുത്തു, അവന് അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു; അവള് ഗര്ഭം ധരിക്കയും ചെയ്തു.

18. 'So what would you want in the way of a pledge?' She said, 'Your personal seal-and-cord and the staff you carry.' He handed them over to her and slept with her. And she got pregnant.

19. പിന്നെ അവള് എഴുന്നേറ്റു പോയി, തന്റെ മൂടുപടം നീക്കി വൈധവ്യവസ്ത്രം ധരിച്ചു.

19. She then left and went home. She removed her veil and put her widow's clothes back on.

20. സ്ത്രീയുടെ കയ്യില്നിന്നു പണയം മടക്കിവാങ്ങേണ്ടതിന്നു യെഹൂദാ അദുല്ലാമ്യനായ സ്നേഹിതന്റെ കൈവശം ആട്ടിന് കുട്ടിയെ കൊടുത്തയച്ചു; അവന് അവളെ കണ്ടില്ലതാനും.

20. Judah sent the kid goat by his friend from Adullam to recover the pledge from the woman. But he couldn't find her.

21. അവന് ആ സ്ഥലത്തെ ആളുകളോടുഏനയീമില് വഴിയരികെ ഇരുന്ന വേശ്യ എവിടെ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുഇവിടെ ഒരു വേശ്യയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല എന്നു അവര് പറഞ്ഞു.

21. He asked the men of that place, 'Where's the prostitute that used to sit by the road here near Enaim?' They said, 'There's never been a prostitute here.'

22. അവന് യെഹൂദയുടെ അടുക്കല് മടങ്ങിവന്നുഞാന് അവളെ കണ്ടില്ല; ഈ സ്ഥലത്തു ഒരു വേശ്യയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല എന്നു അവിടെയുള്ള ആളുകള് പറഞ്ഞു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു

22. He went back to Judah and said, 'I couldn't find her. The men there said there never has been a prostitute there.'

23. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാ നമുക്കു അപകീര്ത്തി ഉണ്ടാകാതിരിപ്പാന് അവള് അതു എടുത്തുകൊള്ളട്ടെ; ഞാന് ഈ ആട്ടിന് കുട്ടിയെ കൊടുത്തയച്ചുവല്ലോ; നീ അവളെ കണ്ടില്ലതാനും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

23. Judah said, 'Let her have it then. If we keep looking, everyone will be poking fun at us. I kept my part of the bargain--I sent the kid goat but you couldn't find her.'

24. ഏകദേശം മൂന്നുമാസം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുനിന്റെ മരുമകള് താമാര് പരസംഗംചെയ്തു, പരസംഗത്താല് ഗര്ഭിണിയായിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു യെഹൂദെക്കു അറിവുകിട്ടി. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാഅവളെ പുറത്തുകൊണ്ടു വരുവിന് ; അവളെ ചുട്ടുകളയേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

24. Three months or so later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law has been playing the whore--and now she's a pregnant whore.' Judah yelled, 'Get her out here. Burn her up!'

25. അവളെ പുറത്തു കൊണ്ടുവന്നപ്പോള് അവള് അമ്മായപ്പന്റെ അടുക്കല് ആളയച്ചുഇവയുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥനായ പുരുഷനാല് ആകുന്നു ഞാന് ഗര്ഭിണിയായിരിക്കുന്നതു; ഈ മുദ്രമോതിരവും മോതിരച്ചരടും വടിയും ആര്ക്കുംള്ളതു എന്നു നോക്കി അറിയേണം എന്നു പറയിച്ചു.

25. As they brought her out, she sent a message to her father-in-law, 'I'm pregnant by the man who owns these things. Identify them, please. Who's the owner of the seal-and-cord and the staff?'

26. യെഹൂദാ അവയെ അറിഞ്ഞുഅവള് എന്നിലും നീതിയുള്ളവള്; ഞാന് അവളെ എന്റെ മകന് ശേലാവിന്നു കൊടുത്തില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അതില് പിന്നെ അവളെ പരിഗ്രഹിച്ചതുമില്ല.

26. Judah saw they were his. He said, 'She's in the right; I'm in the wrong--I wouldn't let her marry my son Shelah.' He never slept with her again.

27. അവള്ക്കു പ്രസവകാലം ആയപ്പോള് അവളുടെ ഗര്ഭത്തില് ഇരട്ടപ്പിള്ളകള് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

27. When her time came to give birth, it turned out that there were twins in her womb.

28. അവള് പ്രസവിക്കുമ്പോള് ഒരു പിള്ള കൈ പുറത്തു നീട്ടി; അപ്പോള് സൂതികര്മ്മിണി ഒരു ചുവന്ന നൂല് എടുത്തു അവന്റെ കൈകൂ കെട്ടി; ഇവന് ആദ്യം പുറത്തുവന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

28. As she was giving birth, one put his hand out; the midwife tied a red thread on his hand, saying, 'This one came first.'

29. അവനോ കൈ പിന്നെയും അകത്തേക്കു വലിച്ചു. അപ്പോള് അവന്റെ സഹോദരന് പുറത്തുവന്നുനീ ഛിദ്രം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയതു എന്തു എന്നു അവള് പറഞ്ഞു. അതുകൊണ്ടു അവന്നു പെരെസ്സ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

29. But then he pulled it back and his brother came out. She said, 'Oh! A breakout!' So she named him Perez (Breakout).

30. അതിന്റെ ശേഷം കൈമേല് ചുവന്ന നൂലുള്ള അവന്റെ സഹോദരന് പുറത്തുവന്നു; അവന്നു സേരഹ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

30. Then his brother came out with the red thread on his hand. They named him Zerah (Bright).
