1. അക്കാലത്തു യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരെ വിട്ടു ഹീരാ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു അദുല്ലാമ്യന്റെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു;

1. Now at that time, Judah went away from his brothers and became the friend of a man of Adullam named Hirah.

2. അവിടെ ശൂവാ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു കനാന്യന്റെ മകളെ കണ്ടു; അവളെ പരിഗ്രഹിച്ചു അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു.

2. And there he saw the daughter of a certain man of Canaan named Shua, and took her as his wife.

3. അവള് ഗര്ഭംധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന്നു ഏര് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

3. And she gave birth to a son, and he gave him the name Er.

4. അവള് പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭംധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന്നു ഔനാന് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

4. And again she gave birth to a son, and he gave him the name Onan.

5. അവള് പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന്നു ശേലാ എന്നു പേരിട്ടു. അവള് ഇവനെ പ്രസവിച്ചപ്പോള് അവന് കെസീബില് ആയിരുന്നു.

5. Then she had another son, to whom she gave the name Shelah; she was at Chezib when the birth took place.

6. യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ ആദ്യജാതനായ ഏരിന്നു താമാര് എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു ഭാര്യയെ എടുത്തു.

6. And Judah took a wife for his first son Er, and her name was Tamar.

7. യെഹൂദയുടെ ആദ്യജാതനായ ഏര് യഹോവേക്കു അനിഷ്ടനായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു യഹോവ അവനെ മരിപ്പിച്ചു.

7. Now Er, Judah's first son, did evil in the eyes of the Lord, so that he put him to death.

8. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാ ഔനാനോടുനിന്റെ ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു അവളോടു ദേവരധര്മ്മം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു, ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ പേര്ക്കും സന്തതിയെ ഉളവാക്കുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. Then Judah said to Onan, Go in to your brother's wife and do what it is right for a husband's brother to do; make her your wife and get offspring for your brother.

9. എന്നാല് ആ സന്തതി തന്റേതായിരിക്കയില്ല എന്നു ഔനാന് അറികകൊണ്ടു ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നപ്പോള് ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്നു സന്തതിയെ കൊടുക്കാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു നിലത്തു വീഴ്ത്തിക്കളഞ്ഞു.

9. But Onan, seeing that the offspring would not be his, went in to his brother's wife, but let his seed go on to the earth, so that he might not get offspring for his brother.

10. അവന് ചെയ്തതു യഹോവേക്കു അനിഷ്ടമായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവന് ഇവനെയും മരിപ്പിച്ചു.

10. And what he did was evil in the eyes of the Lord, so that he put him to death, like his brother.

11. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ മരുമകളായ താമാരോടുഎന്റെ മകന് ശേലാ പ്രാപ്തിയാകുവോളം നീ അപ്പന്റെ വീട്ടില് വിധവയായി പാര്ക്ക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; ഇവനും സഹോദരന്മാരെപ്പോലെ മരിച്ചുപോകരുതു എന്നു അവന് വിചാരിച്ചു; അങ്ങനെ താമാര് അപ്പന്റെ വീട്ടില്പോയി പാര്ത്തു.

11. Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, Go back to your father's house and keep yourself as a widow till my son Shelah becomes a man: for he had in his mind the thought that death might come to him as it had come to his brothers. So Tamar went back to her father's house.

12. കുറെ കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടു ശൂവയുടെ മകള് യെഹൂദയുടെ ഭാര്യ മരിച്ചു; യെഹൂദയുടെ ദുഃഖം മാറിയശേഷം അവന് തന്റെ സ്നേഹിതന് അദുല്ലാമ്യനായ ഹീരയോടുകൂടെ തന്റെ ആടുകളെ രോമം കത്രിക്കുന്ന അടിയന്തരത്തിന്നു പോയി.

12. And after a time, Bath-shua, Judah's wife, came to her end; and after Judah was comforted for her loss, he went to Timnah, where they were cutting the wool of his sheep, and his friend Hirah of Adullam went with him.

13. നിന്റെ അമ്മായപ്പന് തന്റെ ആടുകളെ രോമം കത്രിക്കുന്ന അടിയന്തരത്തിന്നു തിമ്നെക്കു പോകുന്നു എന്നു താമാരിന്നു അറിവു കിട്ടി.

13. And when Tamar had news that her father-in-law was going up to Timnah to the wool-cutting,

14. ശേലാ പ്രാപ്തിയായിട്ടും തന്നെ അവന്നു ഭാര്യയായി കൊടുത്തില്ല എന്നു കണ്ടിട്ടു അവള് വൈധവ്യവസ്ത്രം മാറ്റിവെച്ചു, ഒരു മൂടുപടം മൂടി പുതെച്ചു തിമ്നെക്കു പോകുന്ന വഴിക്കുള്ള എനയീംപട്ടണത്തിന്റെ ഗോപുരത്തില് ഇരുന്നു.

14. She took off her widow's clothing, and covering herself with her veil, she took her seat near Enaim on the road to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was now a man, but she had not been made his wife.

15. യെഹൂദാ അവളെ കണ്ടപ്പോള് അവള് മുഖം മൂടിയിരുന്നതു കൊണ്ടു ഒരു വേശ്യ എന്നു നിരൂപിച്ചു.

15. When Judah saw her he took her to be a loose woman of the town, because her face was covered.

16. അവന് വഴിയരികെ അവളുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കു തിരിഞ്ഞുതന്റെ മരുമകള് എന്നു അറിയാതെവരിക, ഞാന് നിന്റെ അടുക്കല് വരട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. എന്റെ അടുക്കല് വരുന്നതിന്നു നീ എനിക്കു എന്തു തരും എന്നു അവള് ചോദിച്ചു.

16. And turning to her by the roadside, he said to her, Let me come in to you; for he had no idea that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, What will you give me as my price?

17. ഞാന് ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടത്തില് നിന്നു ഒരു കോലാട്ടിന് കുട്ടിയെ നിനക്കു കൊടുത്തയക്കാം എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞു. നീ കൊടുത്തയക്കുവോളത്തിന്നു ഒരു പണയം തരുമോ എന്നു അവള് ചോദിച്ചു.

17. And he said, I will give you a young goat from the flock. And she said, What will you give me as a sign till you send it?

18. എന്തു പണയം തരേണം എന്നു അവന് ചോദിച്ചതിന്നു നിന്റെ മുദ്രമോതിരവും മോതിരച്ചരടും നിന്റെ കയ്യിലെ വടിയും എന്നു അവള് പറഞ്ഞു. ഇവ അവള്ക്കു കൊടുത്തു, അവന് അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു; അവള് ഗര്ഭം ധരിക്കയും ചെയ്തു.

18. And he said, What would you have? And she said, Your ring and its cord and the stick in your hand. So he gave them to her and went in to her, and she became with child by him.

19. പിന്നെ അവള് എഴുന്നേറ്റു പോയി, തന്റെ മൂടുപടം നീക്കി വൈധവ്യവസ്ത്രം ധരിച്ചു.

19. Then she got up and went away and took off her veil and put on her widow's clothing.

20. സ്ത്രീയുടെ കയ്യില്നിന്നു പണയം മടക്കിവാങ്ങേണ്ടതിന്നു യെഹൂദാ അദുല്ലാമ്യനായ സ്നേഹിതന്റെ കൈവശം ആട്ടിന് കുട്ടിയെ കൊടുത്തയച്ചു; അവന് അവളെ കണ്ടില്ലതാനും.

20. Then Judah sent his friend Hirah with the young goat, to get back the things which he had given as a sign to the woman: but she was not there.

21. അവന് ആ സ്ഥലത്തെ ആളുകളോടുഏനയീമില് വഴിയരികെ ഇരുന്ന വേശ്യ എവിടെ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുഇവിടെ ഒരു വേശ്യയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല എന്നു അവര് പറഞ്ഞു.

21. And he put questions to the men of the place, saying, Where is the loose woman who was in Enaim by the wayside? And they said, There was no such woman there.

22. അവന് യെഹൂദയുടെ അടുക്കല് മടങ്ങിവന്നുഞാന് അവളെ കണ്ടില്ല; ഈ സ്ഥലത്തു ഒരു വേശ്യയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല എന്നു അവിടെയുള്ള ആളുകള് പറഞ്ഞു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു

22. So he went back to Judah, and said, I have not seen her, and the men of the place say that there is no such woman there.

23. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാ നമുക്കു അപകീര്ത്തി ഉണ്ടാകാതിരിപ്പാന് അവള് അതു എടുത്തുകൊള്ളട്ടെ; ഞാന് ഈ ആട്ടിന് കുട്ടിയെ കൊടുത്തയച്ചുവല്ലോ; നീ അവളെ കണ്ടില്ലതാനും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

23. And Judah said, Let her keep the things, so that we may not be shamed; I sent the young goat, but you did not see the woman.

24. ഏകദേശം മൂന്നുമാസം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുനിന്റെ മരുമകള് താമാര് പരസംഗംചെയ്തു, പരസംഗത്താല് ഗര്ഭിണിയായിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു യെഹൂദെക്കു അറിവുകിട്ടി. അപ്പോള് യെഹൂദാഅവളെ പുറത്തുകൊണ്ടു വരുവിന് ; അവളെ ചുട്ടുകളയേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

24. Now about three months after this, word came to Judah that Tamar, his daughter-in-law, had been acting like a loose woman and was with child. And Judah said, Take her out and let her be burned.

25. അവളെ പുറത്തു കൊണ്ടുവന്നപ്പോള് അവള് അമ്മായപ്പന്റെ അടുക്കല് ആളയച്ചുഇവയുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥനായ പുരുഷനാല് ആകുന്നു ഞാന് ഗര്ഭിണിയായിരിക്കുന്നതു; ഈ മുദ്രമോതിരവും മോതിരച്ചരടും വടിയും ആര്ക്കുംള്ളതു എന്നു നോക്കി അറിയേണം എന്നു പറയിച്ചു.

25. And while she was being taken out, she sent word to her father-in-law, saying, The man whose property these things are, is the father of my child: say then, whose are this ring and this cord and this stick?

26. യെഹൂദാ അവയെ അറിഞ്ഞുഅവള് എന്നിലും നീതിയുള്ളവള്; ഞാന് അവളെ എന്റെ മകന് ശേലാവിന്നു കൊടുത്തില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അതില് പിന്നെ അവളെ പരിഗ്രഹിച്ചതുമില്ല.

26. Then Judah said openly that they were his, and said, She is more upright than I am, for I did not give her to Shelah my son. And he had no more connection with her.

27. അവള്ക്കു പ്രസവകാലം ആയപ്പോള് അവളുടെ ഗര്ഭത്തില് ഇരട്ടപ്പിള്ളകള് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

27. And when the time came for her to give birth, it was clear that there were two children in her body.

28. അവള് പ്രസവിക്കുമ്പോള് ഒരു പിള്ള കൈ പുറത്തു നീട്ടി; അപ്പോള് സൂതികര്മ്മിണി ഒരു ചുവന്ന നൂല് എടുത്തു അവന്റെ കൈകൂ കെട്ടി; ഇവന് ആദ്യം പുറത്തുവന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

28. And while she was in the act of giving birth, one of them put out his hand; and the woman who was with her put a red thread round his hand, saying, This one came out first.

29. അവനോ കൈ പിന്നെയും അകത്തേക്കു വലിച്ചു. അപ്പോള് അവന്റെ സഹോദരന് പുറത്തുവന്നുനീ ഛിദ്രം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയതു എന്തു എന്നു അവള് പറഞ്ഞു. അതുകൊണ്ടു അവന്നു പെരെസ്സ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

29. But then he took his hand back again, and his brother came first to birth: and the woman said, What an opening you have made for yourself! So he was named Perez.

30. അതിന്റെ ശേഷം കൈമേല് ചുവന്ന നൂലുള്ള അവന്റെ സഹോദരന് പുറത്തുവന്നു; അവന്നു സേരഹ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

30. And then his brother came out, with the red thread round his hand, and he was named Zerah.
