1. എന്നാല് ഞാന് മതില് പണിതു; ആ കാലത്തു പടിവാതിലുകള്ക്കു കതകുകള് വെച്ചിരുന്നില്ലെങ്കിലും അറ്റകുറ്റം ഒന്നും ശേഷിപ്പില്ലെന്നു സന് ബല്ലത്തും തോബീയാവും അരാബ്യനായ ഗേശെമും ഞങ്ങളുടെ മറ്റു ശത്രുക്കളും കേട്ടപ്പോള്

1. Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem, and the rest of our enemies heard that we had finished building the wall and that there were no gaps left in it, although we still had not set up the gates in the gateways.

2. സന് ബല്ലത്തും ഗേശെമും എന്റെ അടുക്കല് ആളയച്ചുവരിക; നാം ഔനോസമഭൂമിയിലെ ഒരു ഗ്രാമത്തില് യോഗംകൂടുക എന്നു പറയിച്ചു. എന്നോടു ദോഷം ചെയ്വാനായിരുന്നു അവര് നിരൂപിച്ചതു.

2. So Sanballat and Geshem sent me a message, suggesting that I meet with them in one of the villages in the Plain of Ono. This was a trick of theirs to try to harm me.

3. ഞാന് അവരുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കു ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചുഞാന് ഒരു വലിയ വേല ചെയ്തുവരുന്നു; എനിക്കു അങ്ങോട്ടു വരുവാന് കഴിവില്ല; ഞാന് വേല വിട്ടു നിങ്ങളുടെ അടുക്കല് വരുന്നതിനാല് അതിന്നു മിനക്കേടു വരുത്തുന്നതു എന്തിന്നു എന്നു പറയിച്ചു.

3. I sent messengers to say to them, 'I am doing important work and can't go down there. I am not going to let the work stop just to go and see you.'

4. അവര് നാലു പ്രാവശ്യം ഇങ്ങനെ എന്റെ അടുക്കല് ആളയച്ചു; ഞാനും ഈ വിധം തന്നേ മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു.

4. They sent me the same message four times, and each time I sent them the same reply.

5. സന് ബല്ലത്ത് അങ്ങനെ തന്നേ അഞ്ചാം പ്രാവശ്യം തന്റെ ഭൃത്യനെ, തുറന്നിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു എഴുത്തുമായി എന്റെ അടുക്കല് അയച്ചു.

5. Then Sanballat sent one of his servants to me with a fifth message, this one in the form of an unsealed letter.

6. അതില് എഴുതിയിരുന്നതുനീയും യെഹൂദന്മാരും മത്സരിപ്പാന് ഭാവിക്കുന്നു; അതുകൊണ്ടാകുന്നു നീ മതില് പണിയുന്നതു; നീ അവര്ക്കും രാജാവാകുവാന് വിചാരിക്കുന്നു എന്നത്രേ വര്ത്തമാനം.

6. It read: 'Geshem tells me that a rumor is going around among the neighboring peoples that you and the Jewish people intend to revolt and that this is why you are rebuilding the wall. He also says you plan to make yourself king

7. യെഹൂദയില് ഒരു രാജാവു ഉണ്ടെന്നു നിന്നെക്കുറിച്ചു യെരൂശലേമില് പ്രസംഗിപ്പാന് നീ പ്രവാചകന്മാരെ നിയമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നിങ്ങനെ ജാതികളുടെ ഇടയില് ഒരു കേള്വി ഉണ്ടു; ഗശ്മൂവും അങ്ങനെ പറയുന്നു. രാജാവും ഇപ്പോള് ഈ കേള്വി കേള്ക്കും; ആകയാല് വരിക നാം തമ്മില് ആലോചന ചെയ്ക.

7. and that you have arranged for some prophets to proclaim in Jerusalem that you are the king of Judah. His Majesty is certain to hear about this, so I suggest that you and I meet to talk the situation over.'

8. അതിന്നു ഞാന് അവന്റെ അടുക്കല് ആളയച്ചുനീ പറയുന്നതുപോലെയുള്ള കാര്യം ഒന്നും നടക്കുന്നില്ല; അതു നീ സ്വമേധയാ സങ്കല്പിച്ചതാകുന്നു എന്നു പറയിച്ചു.

8. I sent a reply to him: 'Nothing of what you are saying is true. You have made it all up yourself.'

9. വേല നടക്കാതവണ്ണം അവരുടെ ധൈര്യം ക്ഷയിച്ചു പോകേണമെന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവര് ഒക്കെയും ഞങ്ങളെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തുവാന് നോക്കി. ആകയാല് ദൈവമേ, എന്നെ ധൈര്യപ്പെടുത്തേണമേ.

9. They were trying to frighten us into stopping work. I prayed, 'But now, God, make me strong!'

10. പിന്നെ ഞാന് മെഹേതബേലിന്റെ മകനായ ദെലായാവിന്റെ മകന് ശെമയ്യാവിന്റെ വീട്ടില് ചെന്നു; അവന് കതകടെച്ചു അകത്തിരിക്കയായിരുന്നു; നാം ഒരുമിച്ചു ദൈവാലയത്തില് മന്ദിരത്തിന്നകത്തു കടന്നു വാതില് അടെക്കുക; നിന്നെ കൊല്ലുവാന് വരുന്നുണ്ടു; നിന്നെ കൊല്ലുവാന് അവര് രാത്രിയില് വരും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

10. About this time I went to visit Shemaiah, the son of Delaiah and grandson of Mehetabel, who was unable to leave his house. He said to me, 'You and I must go and hide together in the Holy Place of the Temple and lock the doors, because they are coming to kill you. Any night now they will come to kill you.'

11. അതിന്നു ഞാന് എന്നെപ്പോലെയുള്ള ഒരാള് ഔടിപ്പോകുമോ? എന്നെപ്പോലെയുള്ള ഒരുത്തന് ജീവരക്ഷെക്കായി മന്ദിരത്തിലേക്കു പോകുമോ? ഞാന് പോകയില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

11. I answered, 'I'm not the kind of person that runs and hides. Do you think I would try to save my life by hiding in the Temple? I won't do it.'

12. ദൈവം അവനെ അയച്ചിട്ടില്ല; തോബീയാവും സന് ബല്ലത്തും അവന്നു കൂലി കൊടുത്തിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവന് എനിക്കു വിരോധമായി ആ പ്രവചനം പറഞ്ഞതേയുള്ളു എന്നു എനിക്കു മനസ്സിലായി.

12. When I thought it over, I realized that God had not spoken to Shemaiah, but that Tobiah and Sanballat had bribed him to give me this warning.

13. ഞാന് ഭയപ്പെട്ടു അങ്ങനെ പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചു പാപം ചെയ്യേണ്ടതിന്നും എന്നെ ദുഷിക്കത്തക്കവണ്ണം അപവാദത്തിന്നു കാരണം കിട്ടേണ്ടതിന്നും അവര് അവന്നു കൂലികൊടുത്തിരുന്നു.

13. They hired him to frighten me into sinning, so that they could ruin my reputation and humiliate me.

14. എന്റെ ദൈവമേ, തോബീയാവും സന് ബല്ലത്തും ചെയ്ത ഈ പ്രവൃത്തികള്ക്കു തക്കവണ്ണം അവരേയും നോവദ്യാ എന്ന പ്രവാചകിയെയും എന്നെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തുവാന് നോക്കിയ മറ്റു പ്രവാചകന്മാരെയും ഔര്ക്കേണമേ.

14. I prayed, 'God, remember what Tobiah and Sanballat have done and punish them. Remember that woman Noadiah and all the other prophets who tried to frighten me.'

15. ഇങ്ങനെ മതില് അമ്പത്തിരണ്ടു ദിവസം പണിതു എലൂല്മാസം ഇരുപത്തഞ്ചാം തിയ്യതി തീര്ത്തു.

15. After fifty-two days of work the entire wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month of Elul.

16. ഞങ്ങളുടെ സകലശത്രുക്കളും അതു കേട്ടപ്പോള് ഞങ്ങളുടെ ചുറ്റുമുള്ള ജാതികള് ആകെ ഭയപ്പെട്ടു; അവര് തങ്ങള്ക്കു തന്നേ അല്പന്മാരായി തോന്നി; ഈ പ്രവൃത്തി ഞങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സഹായത്താല് സാദ്ധ്യമായി എന്നു അവര് ഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

16. When our enemies in the surrounding nations heard this, they realized that they had lost face, since everyone knew that the work had been done with God's help.

17. ആ കാലത്തു യെഹൂദാപ്രഭുക്കന്മാര് തോബീയാവിന്നു അനേകം എഴുത്തു അയക്കുകയും തോബീയാവിന്റെ എഴുത്തു അവര്ക്കും വരികയും ചെയ്തു.

17. During all this time the Jewish leaders had been in correspondence with Tobiah.

18. അവന് ആരഹിന്റെ മകനായ ശെഖന്യാവിന്റെ മരുമകന് ആയിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടും അവന്റെ മകന് യോഹാനാന് ബേരെഖ്യാവിന്റെ മകനായ മെശുല്ലാമിന്റെ മകളെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്തിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടും യെഹൂദയില് അനേകര് അവനുമായി സത്യബന്ധം ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.

18. Many people in Judah were on his side because of his Jewish father-in-law, Shecaniah son of Arah. In addition, his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.

19. അത്രയുമല്ല, അവര് അവന്റെ ഗുണങ്ങളെ എന്റെ മുമ്പാകെ പ്രസ്താവിക്കയും എന്റെ വാക്കുകളെ അവന്റെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നറിയിക്കയും ചെയ്തു. അതുകൊണ്ടു എന്നെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തുവാന് തോബീയാവു എഴുത്തു അയച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

19. People would talk in front of me about all the good deeds Tobiah had done and would tell him everything I said. And he kept sending me letters to try to frighten me.
