1. എന്നാല് ഞാന് മതില് പണിതു; ആ കാലത്തു പടിവാതിലുകള്ക്കു കതകുകള് വെച്ചിരുന്നില്ലെങ്കിലും അറ്റകുറ്റം ഒന്നും ശേഷിപ്പില്ലെന്നു സന് ബല്ലത്തും തോബീയാവും അരാബ്യനായ ഗേശെമും ഞങ്ങളുടെ മറ്റു ശത്രുക്കളും കേട്ടപ്പോള്

1. And when Sanabalat, Tobiah, and Gesem the Arabian, and the other of our enemies heard that I had builded the wall, and that there were no more gaps therein (howbeit at the same time had I not hanged the doors upon the gates)

2. സന് ബല്ലത്തും ഗേശെമും എന്റെ അടുക്കല് ആളയച്ചുവരിക; നാം ഔനോസമഭൂമിയിലെ ഒരു ഗ്രാമത്തില് യോഗംകൂടുക എന്നു പറയിച്ചു. എന്നോടു ദോഷം ചെയ്വാനായിരുന്നു അവര് നിരൂപിച്ചതു.

2. Sanabalat and Gesem sent unto me, saying: come and let us meet together in the villages upon the plain of the city Ono. Nevertheless they thought to do me evil.

3. ഞാന് അവരുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കു ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചുഞാന് ഒരു വലിയ വേല ചെയ്തുവരുന്നു; എനിക്കു അങ്ങോട്ടു വരുവാന് കഴിവില്ല; ഞാന് വേല വിട്ടു നിങ്ങളുടെ അടുക്കല് വരുന്നതിനാല് അതിന്നു മിനക്കേടു വരുത്തുന്നതു എന്തിന്നു എന്നു പറയിച്ചു.

3. Notwithstanding I sent messengers unto them, saying: I have a great business to do, I can not come down. The work should stand still, if I were negligent, and came down to you.

4. അവര് നാലു പ്രാവശ്യം ഇങ്ങനെ എന്റെ അടുക്കല് ആളയച്ചു; ഞാനും ഈ വിധം തന്നേ മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു.

4. Howbeit they sent unto me as good as four times after the same manner. And I gave the same answer.

5. സന് ബല്ലത്ത് അങ്ങനെ തന്നേ അഞ്ചാം പ്രാവശ്യം തന്റെ ഭൃത്യനെ, തുറന്നിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു എഴുത്തുമായി എന്റെ അടുക്കല് അയച്ചു.

5. Then sent Sanabalat his servant unto me the fifth time, with an open letter in his hand,

6. അതില് എഴുതിയിരുന്നതുനീയും യെഹൂദന്മാരും മത്സരിപ്പാന് ഭാവിക്കുന്നു; അതുകൊണ്ടാകുന്നു നീ മതില് പണിയുന്നതു; നീ അവര്ക്കും രാജാവാകുവാന് വിചാരിക്കുന്നു എന്നത്രേ വര്ത്തമാനം.

6. wherein was written: it is told the Heathen, and Gesem hath said it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for the which cause thou buildest the wall, and wilt be their king in these matters,

7. യെഹൂദയില് ഒരു രാജാവു ഉണ്ടെന്നു നിന്നെക്കുറിച്ചു യെരൂശലേമില് പ്രസംഗിപ്പാന് നീ പ്രവാചകന്മാരെ നിയമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നിങ്ങനെ ജാതികളുടെ ഇടയില് ഒരു കേള്വി ഉണ്ടു; ഗശ്മൂവും അങ്ങനെ പറയുന്നു. രാജാവും ഇപ്പോള് ഈ കേള്വി കേള്ക്കും; ആകയാല് വരിക നാം തമ്മില് ആലോചന ചെയ്ക.

7. and hast ordained the Prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, and to say: He is king of Judah. Now shall this come to the king's ears: come now therefore, and let us take our counsel together.

8. അതിന്നു ഞാന് അവന്റെ അടുക്കല് ആളയച്ചുനീ പറയുന്നതുപോലെയുള്ള കാര്യം ഒന്നും നടക്കുന്നില്ല; അതു നീ സ്വമേധയാ സങ്കല്പിച്ചതാകുന്നു എന്നു പറയിച്ചു.

8. Nevertheless I sent unto him saying: there is no such thing done as thou sayest: thou hast feigned it out of thine own heart.

9. വേല നടക്കാതവണ്ണം അവരുടെ ധൈര്യം ക്ഷയിച്ചു പോകേണമെന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവര് ഒക്കെയും ഞങ്ങളെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തുവാന് നോക്കി. ആകയാല് ദൈവമേ, എന്നെ ധൈര്യപ്പെടുത്തേണമേ.

9. For they were all minded to make us afraid and thought: They shall withdraw their hands from the work, that they shall not labour. Howbeit I strengthen my hand the more.

10. പിന്നെ ഞാന് മെഹേതബേലിന്റെ മകനായ ദെലായാവിന്റെ മകന് ശെമയ്യാവിന്റെ വീട്ടില് ചെന്നു; അവന് കതകടെച്ചു അകത്തിരിക്കയായിരുന്നു; നാം ഒരുമിച്ചു ദൈവാലയത്തില് മന്ദിരത്തിന്നകത്തു കടന്നു വാതില് അടെക്കുക; നിന്നെ കൊല്ലുവാന് വരുന്നുണ്ടു; നിന്നെ കൊല്ലുവാന് അവര് രാത്രിയില് വരും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

10. And I came unto the house of Semaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, and he had shut himself within, and said: let us come together in to the house of God, even unto the midst of the temple, and shut(spar) the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee, yea even in the night will they come to put thee to death.

11. അതിന്നു ഞാന് എന്നെപ്പോലെയുള്ള ഒരാള് ഔടിപ്പോകുമോ? എന്നെപ്പോലെയുള്ള ഒരുത്തന് ജീവരക്ഷെക്കായി മന്ദിരത്തിലേക്കു പോകുമോ? ഞാന് പോകയില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

11. But I said: should any such man as I flee? Who is that,(Should such a man) being as I am, that will go in to the temple, to save his life? I will not go in.

12. ദൈവം അവനെ അയച്ചിട്ടില്ല; തോബീയാവും സന് ബല്ലത്തും അവന്നു കൂലി കൊടുത്തിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവന് എനിക്കു വിരോധമായി ആ പ്രവചനം പറഞ്ഞതേയുള്ളു എന്നു എനിക്കു മനസ്സിലായി.

12. For I perceived, that God had not sent him: Yet spake he prophecy upon me, nevertheless Tobiah and Sanabalat had hired him for money.

13. ഞാന് ഭയപ്പെട്ടു അങ്ങനെ പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചു പാപം ചെയ്യേണ്ടതിന്നും എന്നെ ദുഷിക്കത്തക്കവണ്ണം അപവാദത്തിന്നു കാരണം കിട്ടേണ്ടതിന്നും അവര് അവന്നു കൂലികൊടുത്തിരുന്നു.

13. Therefore took he the money, that through fear I should do so, and sin:(I shoulde be afrayed, and so to do and synne,) that they might have an evil report of me, to blaspheme me.

14. എന്റെ ദൈവമേ, തോബീയാവും സന് ബല്ലത്തും ചെയ്ത ഈ പ്രവൃത്തികള്ക്കു തക്കവണ്ണം അവരേയും നോവദ്യാ എന്ന പ്രവാചകിയെയും എന്നെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തുവാന് നോക്കിയ മറ്റു പ്രവാചകന്മാരെയും ഔര്ക്കേണമേ.

14. My God think thou upon Tobiah and Sanabalat according unto these their works, and of the Prophet Noadiah and of the other Prophets, that would have put me in fear.

15. ഇങ്ങനെ മതില് അമ്പത്തിരണ്ടു ദിവസം പണിതു എലൂല്മാസം ഇരുപത്തഞ്ചാം തിയ്യതി തീര്ത്തു.

15. And the wall was finished on the five and twentieth day of the month Elul, in two and fifty days.

16. ഞങ്ങളുടെ സകലശത്രുക്കളും അതു കേട്ടപ്പോള് ഞങ്ങളുടെ ചുറ്റുമുള്ള ജാതികള് ആകെ ഭയപ്പെട്ടു; അവര് തങ്ങള്ക്കു തന്നേ അല്പന്മാരായി തോന്നി; ഈ പ്രവൃത്തി ഞങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സഹായത്താല് സാദ്ധ്യമായി എന്നു അവര് ഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

16. And when all our enemies heard thereof, all the Heathen that were about us, were afraid and their courage failed them: for they perceived, that this work came of God.

17. ആ കാലത്തു യെഹൂദാപ്രഭുക്കന്മാര് തോബീയാവിന്നു അനേകം എഴുത്തു അയക്കുകയും തോബീയാവിന്റെ എഴുത്തു അവര്ക്കും വരികയും ചെയ്തു.

17. And at the same time were there many of the chief of Juda, whose letters went unto Tobiah, and from Tobiah unto them,

18. അവന് ആരഹിന്റെ മകനായ ശെഖന്യാവിന്റെ മരുമകന് ആയിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടും അവന്റെ മകന് യോഹാനാന് ബേരെഖ്യാവിന്റെ മകനായ മെശുല്ലാമിന്റെ മകളെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്തിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടും യെഹൂദയില് അനേകര് അവനുമായി സത്യബന്ധം ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.

18. (for there were many in Judah that were sworn unto him: for he was the son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah, and his son Johanan had the daughter of Mosolam the son of Barachiah

19. അത്രയുമല്ല, അവര് അവന്റെ ഗുണങ്ങളെ എന്റെ മുമ്പാകെ പ്രസ്താവിക്കയും എന്റെ വാക്കുകളെ അവന്റെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നറിയിക്കയും ചെയ്തു. അതുകൊണ്ടു എന്നെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തുവാന് തോബീയാവു എഴുത്തു അയച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

19. and they spake good of him before me, and told him my words) and Tobiah sent letters, to put me in fear.
