1. ഇങ്ങനെ അബ്രാമും ഭാര്യയും അവന്നുള്ളതൊക്കെയും അവനോടുകൂടെ ലോത്തും മിസ്രയീമില്നിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടു തെക്കെ ദേശത്തു വന്നു.

1. From Egypt Abram returned to the Negeb with his wife and all he possessed, and Lot with him.

2. കന്നുകാലി, വെള്ളി, പൊന്നു ഈ വകയില് അബ്രാം ബഹുസമ്പന്നനായിരുന്നു.

2. Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold.

3. അവന് തന്റെ യാത്രയില് തെക്കുനിന്നു ബേഥേല്വരെയും ബേഥേലിന്നും ഹായിക്കും മദ്ധ്യേ തനിക്കു ആദിയില് കൂടാരം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതും താന് ആദിയില് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ യാഗപീഠമിരുന്നതുമായ സ്ഥലംവരെയും ചെന്നു.

3. By stages he went from the Negeb to Bethel, where he had first pitched his tent, between Bethel and Ai,

4. അവിടെ അബ്രാം യഹോവയുടെ നാമത്തില് ആരാധിച്ചു.

4. at the place where he had formerly erected the altar. There Abram invoked the name of Yahweh.

5. അബ്രാമിനോടുകൂടെവന്ന ലോത്തിന്നും ആടുമാടുകളും കൂടാരങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

5. Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too.

6. അവര് ഒന്നിച്ചുപാര്പ്പാന് തക്കവണ്ണം ദേശത്തിന്നു അവരെ വഹിച്ചു കൂടാഞ്ഞു; സമ്പത്തു വളരെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവര്ക്കും ഒന്നിച്ചുപാര്പ്പാന് കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല.

6. The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions to be able to live together.

7. അബ്രാമിന്റെ കന്നുകാലികളുടെ ഇടയന്മാര്ക്കും ലോത്തിന്റെ കന്നുകാലികളുടെ ഇടയന്മാര്ക്കും തമ്മില് പിണക്കമുണ്ടായി; കനാന്യരും പെരിസ്യരും അന്നു ദേശത്തു പാര്ത്തിരുന്നു.

7. Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot. (The Canaanites and Perizzites were living in the country at the time.)

8. അതു കൊണ്ടു അബ്രാം ലോത്തിനോടുഎനിക്കും നിനക്കും എന്റെ ഇടയന്മാര്ക്കും നിന്റെ ഇടയന്മാര്ക്കും തമ്മില് പിണക്കം ഉണ്ടാകരുതേ; നാം സഹോദരന്മാരല്ലോ.

8. Accordingly Abram said to Lot, 'We do not want discord between us or between my herdsmen and yours, for we are kinsmen.

9. ദേശമെല്ലാം നിന്റെ മുമ്പാകെ ഇല്ലയോ? എന്നെ വിട്ടുപിരിഞ്ഞാലും. നീ ഇടത്തോട്ടെങ്കില് ഞാന് വലത്തോട്ടു പൊയ്ക്കൊള്ളാം; നീ വലത്തോട്ടെങ്കില് ഞാന് ഇടത്തോട്ടു പൊയ്ക്കൊള്ളാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

9. Is not the whole land open before you? Go in the opposite direction to me: if you take the left, I shall go right; if you take the right, I shall go left.'

10. അപ്പോള് ലോത്ത് നോക്കി, യോര്ദ്ദാന്നരികെയുള്ള പ്രദേശം ഒക്കെയും നീരോട്ടമുള്ളതെന്നു കണ്ടു; യഹോവ സൊദോമിനെയും ഗൊമോരയെയും നശിപ്പിച്ചതിന്നു മുമ്പെ അതു യഹോവയുടെ തോട്ടംപോലെയും സോവര്വരെ മിസ്രയീംദേശംപോലെയും ആയിരുന്നു.

10. Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere -- this was before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-like the garden of Yahweh or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar.

11. ലോത്ത് യോര്ദ്ദാന്നരികെയുള്ള പ്രദേശം ഒക്കെയും തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു; ഇങ്ങനെ ലോത്ത് കിഴക്കോട്ടു യാത്രയായി; അവര് തമ്മില് പരിഞ്ഞു.

11. So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company:

12. അബ്രാം കനാന് ദേശത്തു പാര്ത്തു; ലോത്ത് ആ പ്രദേശത്തിലെ പട്ടണങ്ങളില് പാര്ത്തു സൊദോംവരെ കൂടാരം നീക്കി നീക്കി അടിച്ചു.

12. Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the cities of the plain, pitching his tents on the outskirts of Sodom.

13. സൊദോംനിവാസികള് ദുഷ്ടന്മാരും യഹോവയുടെ മുമ്പാകെ മഹാപാപികളും ആയിരുന്നു.

13. Now the people of Sodom were vicious and great sinners against Yahweh.

14. ലോത്ത് അബ്രാമിനെ വിട്ടു പിരിഞ്ഞശേഷം യഹോവ അബ്രാമിനോടു അരുളിച്ചെയ്തതുതലപൊക്കി, നീ ഇരിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തു നിന്നു വടക്കോട്ടും തെക്കോട്ടും കിഴക്കോട്ടും പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ടും നോക്കുക.

14. Yahweh said to Abram after Lot had parted company from him, 'Look all round from where you are, to north and south, to east and west,

15. നീ കാണുന്ന ഭൂമി ഒക്കെയും ഞാന് നിനക്കും നിന്റെ സന്തതിക്കും ശാശ്വതമായി തരും.

15. for all the land within sight I shall give to you and your descendants for ever.

16. ഞാന് നിന്റെ സന്തതിയെ ഭൂമിയിലെ പൊടിപോലെ ആക്കുംഭൂമിയിലെ പൊടിയെ എണ്ണുവാന് കഴിയുമെങ്കില് നിന്റെ സന്തതിയെയും എണ്ണാം.

16. I shall make your descendants like the dust on the ground; when people succeed in counting the specks of dust on the ground, then they will be able to count your descendants too!

17. നീ പുറപ്പെട്ടു ദേശത്തു നെടുകെയും കുറുകെയും സഞ്ചരിക്ക; ഞാന് അതു നിനക്കു തരും.

17. On your feet! Travel the length and breadth of the country, for I mean to give it to you.'

18. അപ്പോള് അബ്രാം കൂടാരം നീക്കി ഹെബ്രോനില് മമ്രേയുടെ തോപ്പില് വന്നു പാര്ത്തു; അവിടെ യഹോവേക്കു ഒരു യാഗപീഠം പണിതു.

18. So Abram moved his tent and went to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built an altar to Yahweh.
