1. The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:

2. ഹാ മായ, മായ എന്നു സഭാപ്രസംഗി പറയുന്നു; ഹാ മായ, മായ, സകലവും മായയത്രേ.

2. Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity!

3. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴില് പ്രയത്നിക്കുന്ന സകലപ്രയത്നത്താലും മനുഷ്യന്നു എന്തു ലാഭം?

3. What is the profit to a man in all his labor which he labors under the sun?

4. ഒരു തലമുറ പോകുന്നു; മറ്റൊരു തലമുറ വരുന്നു;

4. A generation passes away, and another generation comes; but the earth stands forever.

5. ഭൂമിയോ എന്നേക്കും നിലക്കുന്നു; സൂര്യന് ഉദിക്കുന്നു; സൂര്യന് അസ്തമിക്കുന്നു; ഉദിച്ച സ്ഥലത്തേക്കു തന്നേ ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു ചെല്ലുന്നു.

5. The sun also arises, and the sun goes even panting to its place; it arises there again.

6. കാറ്റു തെക്കോട്ടു ചെന്നു വടക്കോട്ടു ചുറ്റിവരുന്നു; അങ്ങനെ കാറ്റു ചുറ്റിച്ചുറ്റി തിരിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടു പരിവര്ത്തനം ചെയ്യുന്നു.

6. The wind goes toward the south, and turning around to the north; the wind is going around and around. And the wind returns on its circuits.

7. സകലനദികളും സമുദ്രത്തിലേക്കു ഒഴുകിവീഴുന്നു; എന്നിട്ടും സമുദ്രം നിറയുന്നില്ല; നദികള് ഒഴുകിവീഴുന്ന ഇടത്തേക്കു പിന്നെയും പിന്നെയും ചെല്ലുന്നു.

7. All the rivers are going to the sea; yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers are going, there they are returning to go again.

8. സകലകാര്യങ്ങളും ശ്രമാവഹങ്ങളാകുന്നു; മനുഷ്യന് പറഞ്ഞാല് തീരുകയില്ല; കണ്ടിട്ടു കണ്ണിന്നു തൃപ്തി വരുന്നില്ല; കേട്ടിട്ടു ചെവി നിറയുന്നതുമില്ല.

8. All words are wearisome; a man is not able to utter it. The eye is not satisfied to see, nor is the ear filled from hearing.

9. ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതു ഉണ്ടാകുവാനുള്ളതും, ചെയ്തുകഴിഞ്ഞതു ചെയ്വാനുള്ളതും ആകുന്നു; സൂര്യന്നു കീഴില് പുതുതായി യാതൊന്നും ഇല്ല.

9. That which has been, it is that which shall be. And that which has been done, it is that which will be done. And there is no new thing under the sun.

10. ഇതു പുതിയതു എന്നു പറയത്തക്കവണ്ണം വല്ലതും ഉണ്ടോ? നമുക്കു മുമ്പെ, പണ്ടത്തെ കാലത്തു തന്നേ അതുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

10. Is there a thing of which one might say, See this, it is new? It has already been for the ages which were before us.

11. പുരാതന ജനത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു ഔര്മ്മയില്ലല്ലോ; വരുവാനുള്ളവരെക്കുറിച്ചു പിന്നത്തേതില് വരുവാനുള്ളവര്ക്കും ഔര്മ്മയുണ്ടാകയില്ല.

11. There is no memory of former things; yea, nor is there any memory for them of things which will be afterward, with those who will be at the last.

12. സഭാപ്രസംഗിയായ ഞാന് യെരൂശലേമില് യിസ്രായേലിന്നു രാജാവായിരുന്നു.

12. I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13. ആകാശത്തിന് കീഴില് സംഭവിക്കുന്നതൊക്കെയും ജ്ഞാനത്തോടെ ആരാഞ്ഞറിയേണ്ടതിന്നു ഞാന് മനസ്സുവെച്ചു; ഇതു ദൈവം മനുഷ്യര്ക്കും കഷ്ടപ്പെടുവാന് കൊടുത്ത വല്ലാത്ത കഷ്ടപ്പാടു തന്നേ.

13. And I gave my heart to seek and to investigate by wisdom concerning all which is done under the heavens. It is an evil task God has given to the sons of men, to be afflicted by it.

14. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ നടക്കുന്ന സകല പ്രവൃത്തികളും ഞാന് കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടു; അവയൊക്കെയും മായയും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നവും അത്രേ.

14. I have seen all the works which are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and striving after wind!

15. വളവുള്ളതു നേരെ ആക്കുവാന് വഹിയാ; കുറവുള്ളതു എണ്ണിത്തികെപ്പാനും വഹിയാ.

15. What is crooked cannot be made straight, and that lacking cannot be numbered.

16. ഞാന് മനസ്സില് ആലോചിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞതുയെരൂശലേമില് എനിക്കു മുമ്പുണ്ടായിരുന്ന എല്ലാവരെക്കാളും അധികം ജ്ഞാനം ഞാന് സമ്പാദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; എന്റെ ഹൃദയം ജ്ഞാനവും അറിവും ധാരാളം പ്രാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

16. I spoke with my heart, saying, Lo, I have become great and have increased wisdom over all that have been over Jerusalem before me. Yea, my heart has seen much wisdom and knowledge.

17. ജ്ഞാനം ഗ്രഹിപ്പാനും ഭ്രാന്തും ഭോഷത്വവും അറിവാനും ഞാന് മനസ്സുവെച്ചു; ഇതും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നമെന്നു കണ്ടു.

17. And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness, and folly. I know that this also, it is striving after wind.

18. ജ്ഞാനബാഹുല്യത്തില് വ്യസനബാഹുല്യം ഉണ്ടു; അറിവു വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നവന് ദുഃഖവും വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

18. For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases pain.
