2. Sheer futility, Qoheleth says. Sheer futility: everything is futile!

3. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴില് പ്രയത്നിക്കുന്ന സകലപ്രയത്നത്താലും മനുഷ്യന്നു എന്തു ലാഭം?

3. What profit can we show for all our toil, toiling under the sun?

4. ഒരു തലമുറ പോകുന്നു; മറ്റൊരു തലമുറ വരുന്നു;

4. A generation goes, a generation comes, yet the earth stands firm for ever.

5. ഭൂമിയോ എന്നേക്കും നിലക്കുന്നു; സൂര്യന് ഉദിക്കുന്നു; സൂര്യന് അസ്തമിക്കുന്നു; ഉദിച്ച സ്ഥലത്തേക്കു തന്നേ ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു ചെല്ലുന്നു.

5. The sun rises, the sun sets; then to its place it speeds and there it rises.

6. കാറ്റു തെക്കോട്ടു ചെന്നു വടക്കോട്ടു ചുറ്റിവരുന്നു; അങ്ങനെ കാറ്റു ചുറ്റിച്ചുറ്റി തിരിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടു പരിവര്ത്തനം ചെയ്യുന്നു.

6. Southward goes the wind, then turns to the north; it turns and turns again; then back to its circling goes the wind.

7. സകലനദികളും സമുദ്രത്തിലേക്കു ഒഴുകിവീഴുന്നു; എന്നിട്ടും സമുദ്രം നിറയുന്നില്ല; നദികള് ഒഴുകിവീഴുന്ന ഇടത്തേക്കു പിന്നെയും പിന്നെയും ചെല്ലുന്നു.

7. Into the sea go all the rivers, and yet the sea is never filled, and still to their goal the rivers go.

8. സകലകാര്യങ്ങളും ശ്രമാവഹങ്ങളാകുന്നു; മനുഷ്യന് പറഞ്ഞാല് തീരുകയില്ല; കണ്ടിട്ടു കണ്ണിന്നു തൃപ്തി വരുന്നില്ല; കേട്ടിട്ടു ചെവി നിറയുന്നതുമില്ല.

8. All things are wearisome. No one can say that eyes have not had enough of seeing, ears their fill of hearing.

9. ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതു ഉണ്ടാകുവാനുള്ളതും, ചെയ്തുകഴിഞ്ഞതു ചെയ്വാനുള്ളതും ആകുന്നു; സൂര്യന്നു കീഴില് പുതുതായി യാതൊന്നും ഇല്ല.

9. What was, will be again, what has been done, will be done again, and there is nothing new under the sun!

10. ഇതു പുതിയതു എന്നു പറയത്തക്കവണ്ണം വല്ലതും ഉണ്ടോ? നമുക്കു മുമ്പെ, പണ്ടത്തെ കാലത്തു തന്നേ അതുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

10. Take anything which people acclaim as being new: it existed in the centuries preceding us.

11. പുരാതന ജനത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു ഔര്മ്മയില്ലല്ലോ; വരുവാനുള്ളവരെക്കുറിച്ചു പിന്നത്തേതില് വരുവാനുള്ളവര്ക്കും ഔര്മ്മയുണ്ടാകയില്ല.

11. No memory remains of the past, and so it will be for the centuries to come -- they will not be remembered by their successors.

12. സഭാപ്രസംഗിയായ ഞാന് യെരൂശലേമില് യിസ്രായേലിന്നു രാജാവായിരുന്നു.

12. I, Qoheleth, have reigned over Israel in Jerusalem.

13. ആകാശത്തിന് കീഴില് സംഭവിക്കുന്നതൊക്കെയും ജ്ഞാനത്തോടെ ആരാഞ്ഞറിയേണ്ടതിന്നു ഞാന് മനസ്സുവെച്ചു; ഇതു ദൈവം മനുഷ്യര്ക്കും കഷ്ടപ്പെടുവാന് കൊടുത്ത വല്ലാത്ത കഷ്ടപ്പാടു തന്നേ.

13. Wisely I have applied myself to investigation and exploration of everything that happens under heaven. What a wearisome task God has given humanity to keep us busy!

14. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ നടക്കുന്ന സകല പ്രവൃത്തികളും ഞാന് കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടു; അവയൊക്കെയും മായയും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നവും അത്രേ.

14. I have seen everything that is done under the sun: how futile it all is, mere chasing after the wind!

15. വളവുള്ളതു നേരെ ആക്കുവാന് വഹിയാ; കുറവുള്ളതു എണ്ണിത്തികെപ്പാനും വഹിയാ.

15. What is twisted cannot be straightened, what is not there cannot be counted.

16. ഞാന് മനസ്സില് ആലോചിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞതുയെരൂശലേമില് എനിക്കു മുമ്പുണ്ടായിരുന്ന എല്ലാവരെക്കാളും അധികം ജ്ഞാനം ഞാന് സമ്പാദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; എന്റെ ഹൃദയം ജ്ഞാനവും അറിവും ധാരാളം പ്രാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

16. I thought to myself: I have acquired a greater stock of wisdom than anyone before me in Jerusalem. I myself have mastered every kind of wisdom and science.

17. ജ്ഞാനം ഗ്രഹിപ്പാനും ഭ്രാന്തും ഭോഷത്വവും അറിവാനും ഞാന് മനസ്സുവെച്ചു; ഇതും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നമെന്നു കണ്ടു.

17. I have applied myself to understanding philosophy and science, stupidity and folly, and I now realise that all this too is chasing after the wind.

18. ജ്ഞാനബാഹുല്യത്തില് വ്യസനബാഹുല്യം ഉണ്ടു; അറിവു വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നവന് ദുഃഖവും വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

18. Much wisdom, much grief; the more knowledge, the more sorrow.
