1. നീ അധിപതിയോടുകൂടെ ഭക്ഷണത്തിന്നു ഇരിക്കുമ്പോള് നിന്റെ മുമ്പില് ഇരിക്കുന്നവന് ആരെന്നു കരുതിക്കൊള്ക.

1. When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Thou considerest diligently that which [is] before thee,

2. നീ ഭോജനപ്രിയന് ആകുന്നുവെങ്കില് നിന്റെ തൊണ്ടെക്കു ഒരു കത്തി വെച്ചുകൊള്ക.

2. And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou [art] a man of appetite.

3. അവന്റെ സ്വാദുഭോജനങ്ങളെ കൊതിക്കരുതു; അവ വഞ്ചിക്കുന്ന ഭോജനമല്ലോ.

3. Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it [is] lying food.

4. ധനവാനാകേണ്ടതിന്നു പണിപ്പെടരുതു; അതിന്നായുള്ള ബുദ്ധി വിട്ടുകളക.

4. Labour not to make wealth, From thine own understanding cease, Dost thou cause thine eyes to fly upon it? Then it is not.

5. നിന്റെ ദൃഷ്ടി ധനത്തിന്മേല് പതിക്കുന്നതു എന്തിന്നു? അതു ഇല്ലാതെയായ്പോകുമല്ലോ. കഴുകന് ആകാശത്തേക്കു എന്നപോലെ അതു ചിറകെടുത്തു പറന്നുകളയും.

5. For wealth maketh to itself wings, As an eagle it flieth to the heavens.

6. കണ്ണുകടിയുള്ളവന്റെ അപ്പം തിന്നരുതു; അവന്റെ സ്വാദുഭോജ്യങ്ങളെ ആഗ്രഹിക്കയുമരുതു.

6. Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,

7. അവന് തന്റെ മനസ്സില് കണകൂ കൂട്ടുന്നതുപോലെ ആകുന്നു; തിന്നു കുടിച്ചുകൊള്ക എന്നു അവന് നിന്നോടു പറയും; അവന്റെ ഹൃദയമോ നിനക്കു അനുകൂലമല്ല.

7. For as he hath thought in his soul, so [is] he, 'Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart [is] not with thee.

8. നീ തിന്ന കഷണം ഛര്ദ്ദിച്ചുപോകും; നിന്റെ മാധുര്യവാക്കു നഷ്ടമായെന്നും വരും.

8. Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that [are] sweet.

9. ഭോഷന് കേള്ക്കെ നീ സംസാരിക്കരുതു; അവന് നിന്റെ വാക്കുകളുടെ ജ്ഞാനത്തെ നിരസിച്ചുകളയും.

9. In the ears of a fool speak not, For he treadeth on the wisdom of thy words.

10. പണ്ടേയുള്ള അതിര് നീക്കരുതു; അനാഥന്മാരുടെ നിലം ആക്രമിക്കയുമരുതു.

10. Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,

11. അവരുടെ പ്രതികാരകന് ബലവാനല്ലോ; അവര്ക്കും നിന്നോടുള്ള വ്യവഹാരം അവന് നടത്തും.

11. For their Redeemer [is] strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.

12. നിന്റെ ഹൃദയം പ്രബോധനത്തിന്നും നിന്റെ ചെവി പരിജ്ഞാനവചനങ്ങള്ക്കും സമര്പ്പിക്ക.

12. Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.

13. ബാലന്നു ശിക്ഷ കൊടുക്കാതിരിക്കരുതു; വടികൊണ്ടു അടിച്ചാല് അവന് ചത്തുപോകയില്ല.

13. Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.

14. വടികൊണ്ടു അവനെ അടിക്കുന്നതിനാല് നീ അവന്റെ പ്രാണനെ പാതാളത്തില്നിന്നു വിടുവിക്കും.

14. Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest.

15. മകനേ, നിന്റെ ഹൃദയം ജ്ഞാനത്തെ പഠിച്ചാല് എന്റെ ഹൃദയവും സന്തോഷിക്കും.

15. My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,

16. നിന്റെ അധരം നേര് സംസാരിച്ചാല് എന്റെ അന്തരംഗങ്ങള് ആനന്ദിക്കും.

16. And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.

17. നിന്റെ ഹൃദയം പാപികളോടു അസൂയപ്പെടരുതു; നീ എല്ലായ്പോഴും യഹോവഭക്തിയോടിരിക്ക.

17. Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But -- in the fear of Jehovah all the day.

18. ഒരു പ്രതിഫലം ഉണ്ടാകും നിശ്ചയം; നിന്റെ പ്രത്യാശെക്കു ഭംഗം വരികയുമില്ല.

18. For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.

19. മകനേ, കേട്ടു ജ്ഞാനം പഠിക്ക; നിന്റെ ഹൃദയത്തെ നേര്വഴിയില് നടത്തിക്കൊള്ക.

19. Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,

20. നീ വീഞ്ഞു കുടിക്കുന്നവരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിലും മാംസഭോജനപ്രിയരുടെ ഇടയിലും ഇരിക്കരുതു.

20. Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,

21. കുടിയനും അതിഭക്ഷകനും ദരിദ്രരായ്തീരും; നിദ്രാലുത്വം പഴന്തുണി ഉടുക്കുമാറാക്കും.

21. For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.

22. നിന്നെ ജനിപ്പിച്ച അപ്പന്റെ വാക്കു കേള്ക്ക; നിന്റെ അമ്മ വൃദ്ധയായിരിക്കുമ്പോള് അവളെ നിന്ദിക്കരുതു.

22. Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.

23. നീ സത്യം വില്ക്കയല്ല വാങ്ങുയത്രേ വേണ്ടതു; ജ്ഞാനവും പ്രബോധനവും വിവേകവും അങ്ങനെ തന്നേ.

23. Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,

24. നീതിമാന്റെ അപ്പന് ഏറ്റവും ആനന്ദിക്കും; ജ്ഞാനിയുടെ ജനകന് അവനില് സന്തോഷിക്കും.

24. The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.

25. നിന്റെ അമ്മയപ്പന്മാര് സന്തോഷിക്കട്ടെ; നിന്നെ പ്രസവിച്ചവള് ആനന്ദിക്കട്ടെ.

25. Rejoice doth thy father and thy mother, Yea, she that bare thee is joyful.

26. മകനേ, നിന്റെ ഹൃദയം എനിക്കു തരിക; എന്റെ വഴി നിന്റെ കണ്ണിന്നു ഇമ്പമായിരിക്കട്ടെ.

26. Give, my son, thy heart to me, And let thine eyes watch my ways.

27. വേശ്യാസ്ത്രീ ആഴമുള്ള കുഴിയും പരസ്ത്രീ ഇടുക്കമുള്ള കിണറും ആകുന്നു.

27. For a harlot [is] a deep ditch, And a strange woman [is] a strait pit.

28. അവള് പിടിച്ചുപറിക്കാരനെപ്പോലെ പതിയിരിക്കുന്നു; മനുഷ്യരില് ദ്രോഹികളെ വര്ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

28. She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.

29. ആര്ക്കും കഷ്ടം, ആര്ക്കും സങ്കടം, ആര്ക്കും കലഹം? ആര്ക്കും ആവലാതി, ആര്ക്കും അനാവശ്യമായ മുറിവുകള്, ആര്ക്കും കണ്ചുവപ്പു?

29. Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? who hath plaint? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?

30. വീഞ്ഞു കുടിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു നേരം വൈകിക്കുന്നവര്ക്കും മദ്യം രുചിനോക്കുവാന് പോകുന്നവര്ക്കും തന്നേ.

30. Those tarrying by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.

31. വീഞ്ഞു ചുവന്നു പാത്രത്തില് തിളങ്ങുന്നതും രസമായി ഇറക്കുന്നതും നീ നോക്കരുതു.

31. See not wine when it showeth itself red, When it giveth in the cup its colour, It goeth up and down through the upright.

32. ഒടുക്കം അതു സര്പ്പംപോലെ കടിക്കും; അണലിപോലെ കൊത്തും.

32. Its latter end -- as a serpent it biteth, And as a basilisk it stingeth.

33. നിന്റെ കണ്ണു പരസ്ത്രീകളെ നോക്കും; നിന്റെ ഹൃദയം വക്രത പറയും.

33. Thine eyes see strange women, And thy heart speaketh perverse things.

34. നീ നടുക്കടലില് ശയിക്കുന്നവനെപ്പോലെയും പാമരത്തിന്റെ മുകളില് ഉറങ്ങുന്നവനെപ്പോലെയും ആകും.

34. And thou hast been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.

35. അവര് എന്നെ അടിച്ചു എനിക്കു നൊന്തില്ല; അവര് എന്നെ തല്ലി, ഞാന് അറിഞ്ഞതുമില്ല. ഞാന് എപ്പോള് ഉണരും? ഞാന് ഇനിയും അതു തന്നേ തേടും എന്നു നീ പറയും.

35. 'They smote me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake -- I seek it yet again!'
