1. ഇതൊക്കെയും, നീതിമാന്മാരും ജ്ഞാനികളും അവരുടെ പ്രവൃത്തികളും ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കയ്യില് ഇരിക്കുന്നു എന്നുള്ളതൊക്കെയും തന്നേ, ശോധനചെയ്വാന് ഞാന് മനസ്സുവെച്ചു; സ്നേഹമാകട്ടെ ദ്വേഷമാകട്ടെ ഒന്നും മനുഷ്യന് അറിയുന്നില്ല; സര്വ്വവും അവരുടെ മുമ്പില് ഇരിക്കുന്നു താനും.

1. For all these things purposed I in my mind to seek out. The righteous and wise, yea and their works(servants) also are in the hand of God: and there is no man that knoweth either the love or hate of the thing that he hath before him.(which is albefore him)

2. എല്ലാവര്ക്കും എല്ലാം ഒരുപോലെ സംഭവിക്കുന്നു; നീതിമാന്നും ദുഷ്ടന്നും നല്ലവന്നും നിര്മ്മലന്നും മലിനന്നും യാഗം കഴിക്കുന്നവനും യാഗം കഴിക്കാത്തവന്നും ഒരേ ഗതി വരുന്നു; പാപിയും നല്ലവനും ആണ പേടിക്കുന്നവനും ആണയിടുന്നവനും ഒരുപോലെ ആകുന്നു.

2. It happeneth unto one as unto another: It goeth with the righteous as with the ungodly: with the good and clean as with the unclean: with him that offereth as with him that offereth not: like as it goeth with the virtuous, so goeth it also with the sinner: As it happeneth unto the perjured, so happeneth it also unto him that is afraid to be foresworn.(man sworn)

3. എല്ലാവര്ക്കും ഒരേഗതി വരുന്നു എന്നുള്ളതു സൂര്യന്റെ കീഴില് നടക്കുന്ന എല്ലാറ്റിലും ഒരു തിന്മയത്രേ; മനുഷ്യരുടെ ഹൃദയത്തിലും ദോഷം നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു; ജീവപര്യന്തം അവരുടെ ഹൃദയത്തില് ഭ്രാന്തു ഉണ്ടു; അതിന്റെ ശേഷമോ അവര് മരിച്ചവരുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കു പോകുന്നു.

3. Among all things that come to pass under the Son, this is a mystery, that it happeneth unto all alike. This is the cause also that the hearts of men are full of wickedness, and mad foolishness is in their hearts, as long as they live, until they die.

4. ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തില് ഉള്ളവന്നൊക്കെയും പ്രത്യാശയുണ്ടു; ചത്ത സിംഹത്തെക്കാള് ജീവനുള്ള നായ് നല്ലതല്ലോ.

4. And why? As long as a man liveth, he is careless: for a quick dog (say they) is better than a dead lion:

5. ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവര് തങ്ങള് മരിക്കും എന്നറിയുന്നു; മരിച്ചവരോ ഒന്നും അറിയുന്നില്ല; മേലാല് അവര്ക്കും ഒരു പ്രതിഫലവും ഇല്ല; അവരെ ഔര്മ്മ വിട്ടുപോകുന്നുവല്ലോ.

5. for they that be living, know that they shall die: but they that be dead, know nothing, neither deserve they anymore. For their memorial is forgotten,

6. അവരുടെ സ്നേഹവും ദ്വേഷവും അസൂയയും നശിച്ചുപോയി; സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ നടക്കുന്ന യാതൊന്നിലും അവര്ക്കും ഇനി ഒരിക്കലും ഔഹരിയില്ല.

6. so that they be neither loved, hated nor envied: neither have they anymore part in the world, in all that is done under the Son.

7. നീ ചെന്നു സന്തോഷത്തോടുകൂടെ അപ്പം തിന്നുക; ആനന്ദഹൃദയത്തോടെ വീഞ്ഞു കുടിക്ക ദൈവം നിന്റെ പ്രവൃത്തികളില് പ്രസാദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നുവല്ലോ.

7. Go thou thy way then, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with gladness, for thy works please God.

8. നിന്റെ വസ്ത്രം എല്ലായ്പോഴും വെള്ളയായിരിക്കട്ടെ; നിന്റെ തലയില് എണ്ണ കുറയാതിരിക്കട്ടെ.

8. Let thy garments be alway white, and let thy head want none ointment.

9. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ അവന് നിനക്കു നല്കിയിരിക്കുന്ന മായയായുള്ള ആയുഷ്കാലത്തൊക്കെയും നീ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്ന ഭാര്യയോടുകൂടെ മായയായുള്ള നിന്റെ ആയുഷ്കാലമെല്ലാം സുഖിച്ചുകൊള്ക; അതല്ലോ ഈ ആയുസ്സിലും സൂര്യന്റെ കീഴില് നീ ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രയത്നത്തിലും നിനക്കുള്ള ഔഹരി.

9. Use thy self to live joyfully with thy wife whom thou lovest, all the days of thy life, which is but vanity, that God hath given thee under the Son, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, of all thy labor and travail that thou takest under the Son.

10. ചെയ്വാന് നിനക്കു സംഗതിവരുന്നതൊക്കെയും ശക്തിയോടെ ചെയ്ക; നീ ചെല്ലുന്ന പാതാളത്തില് പ്രവൃത്തിയോ സൂത്രമോ, അറിവോ, ജ്ഞാനമോ ഒന്നും ഇല്ല.

10. Whatsoever thou takest in hand to do, that do with all thy power: for among the dead, where thou goest unto, there is neither work, counsel, knowledge nor wisdom.

11. പിന്നെയും ഞാന് സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ കണ്ടതുവേഗതയുള്ളവര് ഔട്ടത്തിലും വീരന്മാര് യുദ്ധത്തിലും നേടുന്നില്ല; ജ്ഞാനികള്ക്കു ആഹാരവും വിവേകികള്ക്കു സമ്പത്തും സാമര്ത്ഥ്യമുള്ളവര്ക്കും പ്രീതിയും ലഭിക്കുന്നില്ല; അവര്ക്കൊക്കെയും കാലവും ഗതിയും അത്രേ ലഭിക്കുന്നതു.

11. So I turned me unto other things under the Son, and I saw, that in running, it helpeth not to be swift: in battle, it helpeth not to be strong: to feeding, it helpeth not to be wise: to riches, it helpeth not to be suttle: to be had in favour, it helpeth not to be cunning: but that all lieth in time and fortune.

12. മനുഷ്യന് തന്റെ കാലം അറിയുന്നില്ലല്ലോ; വല്ലാത്ത വലയില് പിടിപെടുന്ന മത്സ്യങ്ങളെപ്പോലെയും കണിയില് അകപ്പെടുന്ന പക്ഷികളെപ്പോലെയും മനുഷ്യര്, പെട്ടെന്നു വന്നു കൂടുന്ന ദുഷ്കാലത്തു കണിയില് കുടുങ്ങിപ്പോകുന്നു.

12. For man knoweth not his time, but like as the fish are taken with the angle and as the birds are catched with the snare: Even so are men taken in the perilous time, when it cometh suddenly upon them.

13. ഞാന് സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ ഇങ്ങനെയും ജ്ഞാനം കണ്ടു; അതു എനിക്കു വലുതായി തോന്നി;

13. This wisdom have I seen also under the Son, and me thought it a great thing.

14. ചെറിയോരു പട്ടണം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു; അതില് മനുഷ്യര് ചുരുക്കമായിരുന്നു; വലിയോരു രാജാവു അതിന്റെ നേരെ വന്നു, അതിനെ നിരോധിച്ചു, അതിന്നെതിരെ വലിയ കൊത്തളങ്ങള് പണിതു.

14. There was a little city, and a few men within it: so there came a great king and besieged it, and made great bulwarks against it.

15. എന്നാല് അവിടെ സാധുവായോരു ജ്ഞാനി പാര്ത്തിരുന്നു; അവന് തന്റെ ജ്ഞാനത്താല് പട്ടണത്തെ രക്ഷിച്ചു; എങ്കിലും ആ സാധുമനുഷ്യനെ ആരും ഔര്ത്തില്ല.

15. And in the city there was found a poor man, (but he was wise) which with his wisdom delivered the city: yet was there no body, that had any respect for such a simple man.

16. ജ്ഞാനം ബലത്തെക്കാള് നല്ലതു തന്നേ, എങ്കിലും സാധുവിന്റെ ജ്ഞാനം തുച്ഛീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു; അവന്റെ വാക്കു ആരും കൂട്ടാക്കുന്നതുമില്ല എന്നു ഞാന് പറഞ്ഞു.

16. Then said I: Wisdom is better than strength. Nevertheless, a simple man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

17. മൂഢന്മാരെ ഭരിക്കുന്നവന്റെ അട്ടഹാസത്തെക്കാള് സാവധാനത്തില് പറയുന്ന ജ്ഞാനികളുടെ വചനങ്ങള് നല്ലതു.

17. A wise man's counsel that is followed in silence, is far above the crying of a captain among fools.

18. യുദ്ധായുധങ്ങളെക്കാളും ജ്ഞാനം നല്ലതു; എന്നാല് ഒരൊറ്റ പാപി വളരെ നന്മ നശിപ്പിച്ചുകളയുന്നു.

18. For wisdom is better than harness: but one unthrifty alone destroyeth much good.
