1. താന് യാക്കോബിന്നു മക്കളെ പ്രസവിക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നു റാഹേല് കണ്ടു തന്റെ സഹോദരിയോടു അസൂയപ്പെട്ടു യാക്കോബിനോടുഎനിക്കു മക്കളെ തരേണം; അല്ലെങ്കില് ഞാന് മരിച്ചുപോകും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

1. Rachel, seeing that she herself gave Jacob no children, became jealous of her sister. And she said to Jacob, 'Give me children, or I shall die!'

2. അപ്പോള് യാക്കോബിന്നു റാഹേലിനോടു കോപം ജ്വലിച്ചുനിനക്കു ഗര്ഭഫലം തരാതിരിക്കുന്ന ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാനത്തോ ഞാന് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

2. This made Jacob angry with Rachel, and he retorted, 'Am I in the position of God, who has denied you motherhood?'

3. അതിന്നു അവള് എന്റെ ദാസി ബില്ഹാ ഉണ്ടല്ലോ; അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെല്ലുക; അവള് എന്റെ മടിയില് പ്രസവിക്കട്ടെ; അവളാല് എനിക്കും മക്കള് ഉണ്ടാകും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. So she said, 'Here is my slave-girl, Bilhah. Sleep with her and let her give birth on my knees; through her, then, I too shall have children!'

4. അങ്ങനെ അവള് തന്റെ ദാസി ബില്ഹയെ അവന്നു ഭാര്യയായി കൊടുത്തു; യാക്കോബ് അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു.

4. So she gave him her slave-girl Bilhah as concubine. Jacob slept with her,

5. ബില്ഹാ ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു യാക്കേബിന്നു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു.

5. and Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son by Jacob.

6. അപ്പോള് റാഹേല്ദൈവം എനിക്കു ന്യായം നടത്തി എന്റെ അപേക്ഷ കേട്ടു എനിക്കു ഒരു മകനെ തന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അതു കൊണ്ടു അവന്നു ദാന് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

6. Then Rachel said, 'God has done me justice; yes, he has heard my prayer and given me a son.' Accordingly she named him Dan.

7. റാഹേലിന്റെ ദാസി ബില്ഹാ പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു യാക്കോബിന്നു രണ്ടാമതൊരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു.

7. Again Rachel's slave-girl Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a second son by Jacob.

8. ഞാന് എന്റെ സഹോദരിയോടു വലിയോരു പോര് പൊരുതു ജയിച്ചുമിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു റാഹേല് പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു നഫ്താലി എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

8. Then Rachel said, 'I have fought a fateful battle with my sister, and I have won!' So she named him Naphtali.

9. തനിക്കു പ്രസവം നിന്നുപോയി എന്നു ലേയാ കണ്ടാറെ തന്റെ ദാസി സില്പയെ വിളിച്ചു അവളെ യാക്കോബിന്നു ഭാര്യയായി കൊടുത്തു.

9. Now Leah, seeing that she had ceased to bear children, took her slave-girl Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as concubine.

10. ലേയയുടെ ദാസി സില്പാ യാക്കോബിന്നു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു.

10. So Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a son by Jacob.

11. അപ്പോള് ലേയാഭാഗ്യം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു ഗാദ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

11. Then Leah exclaimed, 'What good fortune!' So she named him Gad.

12. ലേയയുടെ ദാസി സില്പാ യാക്കോബിന്നു രണ്ടാമതു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു.

12. Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a second son by Jacob.

13. ഞാന് ഭാഗ്യവതി; സ്ത്രികള് എന്നെ ഭാഗ്യവതിയെന്നു പറയും എന്നു ലേയാ പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു ആശേര് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

13. Then Leah said, 'What blessedness! Women will call me blessed!' So she named him Asher.

14. കോതമ്പുകൊയിത്തുകാലത്തു രൂബേന് പുറപ്പെട്ടു വയലില് ദൂദായിപ്പഴം കണ്ടു തന്റെ അമ്മയായ ലേയയുടെ അടുക്കല് കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. റാഹേല് ലേയയോടുനിന്റെ മകന്റെ ദൂദായിപ്പഴം കുറെ എനിക്കു തരേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

14. One day, at the time of the wheat harvest, Reuben found some mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, 'Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.'

15. അവള് അവളോടുനീ എന്റെ ഭര്ത്താവിനെ എടുത്തതു പോരയോ? എന്റെ മകന്റെ ദൂദായിപ്പഴവും കൂടെ വേണമോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞതിന്നു റാഹേല്ആകട്ടെ; നിന്റെ മകന്റെ ദൂദായിപ്പഴത്തിന്നു വേണ്ടി ഇന്നു രാത്രി അവന് നിന്നോടുകൂടെ ശയിച്ചുകൊള്ളട്ടേ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

15. Leah replied, 'Is it not enough to have taken my husband, without your taking my son's mandrakes as well?' So Rachel said, 'Very well, he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes.'

16. യാക്കോബ് വൈകുന്നേരം വയലില്നിന്നു വരുമ്പോള് ലേയാ അവനെ എതിരേറ്റു ചെന്നുനീ എന്റെ അടുക്കല് വരേണം; എന്റെ മകന്റെ ദൂദായിപ്പഴം കൊണ്ടു ഞാന് നിന്നെ കൂലിക്കു വാങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അന്നു രാത്രി അവന് അവളോടുകൂടെ ശയിച്ചു.

16. When Jacob came back from the fields that night, Leah went out to meet him and said, 'You must come to me, for I have hired you at the price of my son's mandrakes.' So he slept with her that night.

17. ദൈവം ലേയയുടെ അപേക്ഷ കേട്ടു; അവള് ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു യാക്കോബിന്നു അഞ്ചാമതു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു.

17. God heard Leah, and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son by Jacob.

18. അപ്പോള് ലേയാഞാന് എന്റെ ദാസിയെ എന്റെ ഭര്ത്താവിന്നു കൊടുത്തതുകൊണ്ടു ദൈവം എനിക്കു കൂലി തന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു യിസ്സാഖാര് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

18. Then Leah said, 'God has given me my reward for giving my slave-girl to my husband.' So she named him Issachar.

19. ലേയാ പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു, യാക്കോബിന്നു ആറാമതു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു;

19. Again Leah conceived and gave birth to a sixth son by Jacob,

20. ദൈവം എനിക്കു ഒരു നല്ലദാനം തന്നിരിക്കുന്നു; ഇപ്പോള് എന്റെ ഭര്ത്താവു എന്നോടുകൂടെ വസിക്കും; ഞാന് അവന്നു ആറു മക്കളെ പ്രസവിച്ചുവല്ലോ എന്നു ലേയാ പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു സെബൂലൂന് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

20. and said, 'God has given me a fine gift; now my husband will bring me presents, for I have borne him six sons.' So she named him Zebulun.

21. അതിന്റെ ശേഷം അവള് ഒരു മകളെ പ്രസവിച്ചു അവള്ക്കു ദീനാ എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

21. Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.

22. ദൈവം റാഹേലിനെ ഔര്ത്തു; ദൈവം അവളുടെ അപേക്ഷ കേട്ടു അവളുടെ ഗര്ഭത്തെ തുറന്നു.

22. Then God remembered Rachel; he heard her and opened her womb.

23. അവള് ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; ദൈവം എന്റെ നിന്ദ നീക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

23. She conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'God has taken away my disgrace!'

24. യഹോവ എനിക്കു ഇനിയും ഒരു മകനെ തരുമെന്നും പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു യോസേഫ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

24. She named him Joseph, saying, 'May Yahweh add another son for me!'

25. റാഹേല് യോസേഫിനെ പ്രസവിച്ചശേഷം യാക്കോബ് ലാബാനോടുഞാന് എന്റെ സ്ഥലത്തേക്കും ദേശത്തേക്കും പോകുവാന് എന്നെ അയക്കേണം.

25. When Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, 'Release me and let me go home to my own country.

26. ഞാന് നിന്നെ സേവിച്ചതിന്റെ പ്രതിഫലമായ എന്റെ ഭാര്യമാരേയും മക്കളെയും എനിക്കു തരേണം; ഞാന് പോകട്ടെ; ഞാന് നിന്നെ സേവിച്ച സേവ നീ അറിയുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

26. Give me my wives for whom I have worked for you, and my children, and let me go. You are well aware how long I have worked for you.'

27. ലാബാന് അവനോടുനിനക്കു എന്നോടു ദയ ഉണ്ടെങ്കില് പോകരുതേ; നിന്റെ നിമിത്തം യഹോവ എന്നെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു എന്നു എനിക്കു ബോദ്ധ്യമായിരിക്കുന്നു.

27. Laban replied, 'If I have done what pleases you . . . I have learnt by divination that Yahweh has blessed me because of you.

28. നിനക്കു എന്തു പ്രതിഫലം വേണം എന്നു പറക; ഞാന് തരാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

28. So name your wages,' he added, 'and I will pay.'

29. അവന് അവനോടുഞാന് നിന്നെ എങ്ങനെ സേവിച്ചു എന്നും നിന്റെ ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടം എന്റെ പക്കല് എങ്ങനെ ഇരുന്നു എന്നും നീ അറിയുന്നു.

29. He replied, 'You know how hard I have worked for you, and how your stock has fared in my charge.

30. ഞാന് വരുംമുമ്പെ നിനക്കു അല്പമേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു; ഇപ്പോള് അതു അത്യന്തം വര്ദ്ധിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; ഞാന് കാല് വെച്ചേടത്തൊക്കെയും യഹോവ നിന്നെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇനി എന്റെ സ്വന്തഭവനത്തിന്നു വേണ്ടി ഞാന് എപ്പോള് കരുതും എന്നും പറഞ്ഞു.

30. The little you had before I came has increased enormously, and Yahweh has blessed you wherever I have been. When am I to provide for my own household too?'

31. ഞാന് നിനക്കു എന്തു തരേണം എന്നു അവന് ചോദിച്ചതിന്നു യാക്കോബ് പറഞ്ഞതുനീ ഒന്നും തരേണ്ടാ; ഈ കാര്യം നീ ചെയ്തുതന്നാല് ഞാന് നിന്റെ ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടത്തെ ഇനിയും മേയിച്ചു പാലിക്കാം.

31. Laban said, 'How much am I to pay you?' Jacob replied, 'You need not pay me anything. I shall change my mind and go on tending your flock, if you do this one thing for me.

32. ഞാന് ഇന്നു നിന്റെ എല്ലാ കൂട്ടങ്ങളിലും കൂടി കടന്നു, അവയില്നിന്നു പുള്ളിയും മറുവുമുള്ള ആടുകളെ ഒക്കെയും ചെമ്മരിയാടുകളില് കറുത്തതിനെയൊക്കെയും കോലാടുകളില് പുള്ളിയും മറുവുമുള്ളതിനെയും വേര്തിരിക്കാം; അതു എന്റെ പ്രതിഫലമായിരിക്കട്ടെ.

32. 'Go through your entire flock today and remove every black animal among the sheep, and every speckled or spotted one among the goats. These will be my wages,

33. നാളെ ഒരിക്കല് എന്റെ പ്രതിഫലം സംബന്ധിച്ചു നീ നോക്കുവാന് വരുമ്പോള് എന്റെ നീതി തെളിവായിരിക്കും; കോലാടുകളില് പുള്ളിയും മറുവുമില്ലാത്തതും ചെമ്മരിയാടുകളില് കറുത്തനിറമില്ലാത്തതും എല്ലാം മോഷ്ടിച്ചതായി എണ്ണാം.

33. and my uprightness will answer for me later: when you come to check my wages, every goat I have that is not speckled or spotted, and every sheep that is not black will count as stolen by me.'

34. അതിന്നു ലാബാന് നീ പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ ആകട്ടെ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

34. Laban replied, 'Good, just as you say.'

35. അന്നു തന്നേ അവന് വരയും മറുവുമുള്ള മുട്ടാടുകളെയും പുള്ളിയും മറുവുമുള്ള പെണ്കോലാടുകളെ ഒക്കെയും വെണ്മയുള്ളതിനെ ഒക്കെയും ചെമ്മരിയാടുകളില് കറുത്തനിറമുള്ളതിനെ ഒക്കെയും വേര്തിരിച്ചു അവന്റെ പുത്രന്മാരുടെ കയ്യില് ഏല്പിച്ചു.

35. That same day he removed the striped and speckled he-goats and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, every one that had white on it, and all the black sheep, and entrusted these to his sons.

36. അവന് തനിക്കും യാക്കോബിന്നും ഇടയില് മൂന്നു ദിവസത്തെ വഴിയകലം വെച്ചു; ലാബാന്റെ ശേഷമുള്ള ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടങ്ങളെ യാക്കോബ് മേയിച്ചു.

36. Then he put a three days' journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob grazed the rest of Laban's flock.

37. എന്നാല് യാക്കോബ് പുന്നവൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെയും ബദാംവൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെയും അരിഞ്ഞില്വൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെയും പച്ചക്കൊമ്പുകളെ എടുത്തു അവയില് വെള്ള കാണത്തക്കവണ്ണം വെള്ളവരയായി തോലുരിച്ചു.

37. Jacob then got fresh shoots from poplar, almond and plane trees, and peeled them in white strips, laying bare the white part of the shoots.

38. ആടുകള് കുടിപ്പാന് വന്നപ്പോള് അവന് , താന് തോലുരിച്ച കൊമ്പുകളെ പാത്തികളിലും വെള്ളം പകരുന്ന തൊട്ടികളിലും ആടുകളുടെ മുമ്പില് വെച്ചു; അവ വെള്ളം കുടിപ്പാന് വന്നപ്പോള് ചനയേറ്റു.

38. He set up the shoots he had peeled in front of the animals, in the troughs, in the water-holes where the animals came to drink. Since they mated when they came to drink,

39. ആടുകള് കൊമ്പുകളെ കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടു ചനയേറ്റു വരയും പുള്ളിയും മറുവുമുള്ള കുട്ടികളെ പെറ്റു.

39. the goats thus mated in front of the shoots and so the goats produced striped, spotted and speckled young.

40. ആ ആട്ടിന് കുട്ടികളെ യാക്കോബ് വേര്തിരിച്ചു ആടുകളെ ലാബാന്റെ ആടുകളില് വരയും മറുവുമുള്ള എല്ലാറ്റിന്നും അഭിമുഖമായി നിര്ത്തി; തന്റെ സ്വന്തകൂട്ടങ്ങളെ ലാബാന്റെ ആടുകളോടു ചേര്ക്കാതെ വേറെയാക്കി.

40. The ewes, on the other hand, Jacob kept apart and made these face whatever was striped or black in Laban's flock. Thus he built up droves of his own which he did not put with Laban's flocks.

41. ബലമുള്ള ആടുകള് ചനയേലക്കുമ്പോഴൊക്കെയും കൊമ്പുകളെ കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടു ചനയേല്ക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു യാക്കോബ് ആ കൊമ്പുകളെ പാത്തികളില് ആടുകളുടെ കണ്ണിന്നു മുമ്പില് വെച്ചു.

41. Furthermore, whenever the sturdier animals were mating, Jacob put the shoots where the animals could see them, in the troughs, so that they would mate in front of the shoots.

42. ബലമില്ലാത്ത ആടുകള് ചനയേലക്കുമ്പോള് അവയെ വെച്ചില്ല; അങ്ങനെ ബലമില്ലാത്തവ ലാബാന്നും ബലമുള്ളവ യാക്കോബിന്നും ആയിത്തീര്ന്നു.

42. But when the animals were feeble, he did not put them there; so Laban got the feeble, and Jacob the sturdy.

43. അവന് മഹാസമ്പന്നനായി അവന്നു വളരെ ആടുകളും ദാസീദാസന്മാരും ഒട്ടകങ്ങളും കഴുതകളും ഉണ്ടാകയും ചെയ്തു.

43. Thus the man grew extremely rich, and came to own large flocks, men and women slaves, camels and donkeys.
