1. ഇതൊക്കെയും, നീതിമാന്മാരും ജ്ഞാനികളും അവരുടെ പ്രവൃത്തികളും ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കയ്യില് ഇരിക്കുന്നു എന്നുള്ളതൊക്കെയും തന്നേ, ശോധനചെയ്വാന് ഞാന് മനസ്സുവെച്ചു; സ്നേഹമാകട്ടെ ദ്വേഷമാകട്ടെ ഒന്നും മനുഷ്യന് അറിയുന്നില്ല; സര്വ്വവും അവരുടെ മുമ്പില് ഇരിക്കുന്നു താനും.

1. I have surely giuen mine heart to all this, and to declare all this, that the iust, and the wise, and their workes are in the hand of God: and no man knoweth eyther loue or hatred of all that is before them.

2. എല്ലാവര്ക്കും എല്ലാം ഒരുപോലെ സംഭവിക്കുന്നു; നീതിമാന്നും ദുഷ്ടന്നും നല്ലവന്നും നിര്മ്മലന്നും മലിനന്നും യാഗം കഴിക്കുന്നവനും യാഗം കഴിക്കാത്തവന്നും ഒരേ ഗതി വരുന്നു; പാപിയും നല്ലവനും ആണ പേടിക്കുന്നവനും ആണയിടുന്നവനും ഒരുപോലെ ആകുന്നു.

2. All things come alike to all: and the same condition is to the iust and to the wicked, to the good and to the pure, and to the polluted, and to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner, he that sweareth, as he that feareth an othe.

3. എല്ലാവര്ക്കും ഒരേഗതി വരുന്നു എന്നുള്ളതു സൂര്യന്റെ കീഴില് നടക്കുന്ന എല്ലാറ്റിലും ഒരു തിന്മയത്രേ; മനുഷ്യരുടെ ഹൃദയത്തിലും ദോഷം നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു; ജീവപര്യന്തം അവരുടെ ഹൃദയത്തില് ഭ്രാന്തു ഉണ്ടു; അതിന്റെ ശേഷമോ അവര് മരിച്ചവരുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കു പോകുന്നു.

3. This is euill among all that is done vnder the sunne, that there is one condition to all, and also the heart of the sonnes of men is full of euill, and madnes is in their heartes whiles they liue, and after that, they goe to the dead.

4. ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തില് ഉള്ളവന്നൊക്കെയും പ്രത്യാശയുണ്ടു; ചത്ത സിംഹത്തെക്കാള് ജീവനുള്ള നായ് നല്ലതല്ലോ.

4. Surely whosoeuer is ioyned to all ye liuing, there is hope: for it is better to a liuing dog, then to a dead lyon.

5. ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവര് തങ്ങള് മരിക്കും എന്നറിയുന്നു; മരിച്ചവരോ ഒന്നും അറിയുന്നില്ല; മേലാല് അവര്ക്കും ഒരു പ്രതിഫലവും ഇല്ല; അവരെ ഔര്മ്മ വിട്ടുപോകുന്നുവല്ലോ.

5. For the liuing knowe that they shall dye, but the dead knowe nothing at all: neither haue they any more a rewarde: for their remembrance is forgotten.

6. അവരുടെ സ്നേഹവും ദ്വേഷവും അസൂയയും നശിച്ചുപോയി; സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ നടക്കുന്ന യാതൊന്നിലും അവര്ക്കും ഇനി ഒരിക്കലും ഔഹരിയില്ല.

6. Also their loue, and their hatred, and their enuie is now perished, and they haue no more portion for euer, in all that is done vnder the sunne.

7. നീ ചെന്നു സന്തോഷത്തോടുകൂടെ അപ്പം തിന്നുക; ആനന്ദഹൃദയത്തോടെ വീഞ്ഞു കുടിക്ക ദൈവം നിന്റെ പ്രവൃത്തികളില് പ്രസാദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നുവല്ലോ.

7. Goe, eate thy bread with ioy, and drinke thy wine with a cheerefull heart: for God nowe accepteth thy workes.

8. നിന്റെ വസ്ത്രം എല്ലായ്പോഴും വെള്ളയായിരിക്കട്ടെ; നിന്റെ തലയില് എണ്ണ കുറയാതിരിക്കട്ടെ.

8. At all times let thy garments be white, and let not oyle be lacking vpon thine head.

9. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ അവന് നിനക്കു നല്കിയിരിക്കുന്ന മായയായുള്ള ആയുഷ്കാലത്തൊക്കെയും നീ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്ന ഭാര്യയോടുകൂടെ മായയായുള്ള നിന്റെ ആയുഷ്കാലമെല്ലാം സുഖിച്ചുകൊള്ക; അതല്ലോ ഈ ആയുസ്സിലും സൂര്യന്റെ കീഴില് നീ ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രയത്നത്തിലും നിനക്കുള്ള ഔഹരി.

9. Reioyce with the wife whom thou hast loued all the dayes of the life of thy vanitie, which God hath giuen thee vnder the sunne all the dayes of thy vanitie: for this is thy portion in the life, and in thy trauaile wherein thou labourest vnder the sunne.

10. ചെയ്വാന് നിനക്കു സംഗതിവരുന്നതൊക്കെയും ശക്തിയോടെ ചെയ്ക; നീ ചെല്ലുന്ന പാതാളത്തില് പ്രവൃത്തിയോ സൂത്രമോ, അറിവോ, ജ്ഞാനമോ ഒന്നും ഇല്ല.

10. All that thine hand shall finde to doe, doe it with all thy power: for there is neither worke nor inuention, nor knowledge, nor wisedome in the graue whither thou goest.

11. പിന്നെയും ഞാന് സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ കണ്ടതുവേഗതയുള്ളവര് ഔട്ടത്തിലും വീരന്മാര് യുദ്ധത്തിലും നേടുന്നില്ല; ജ്ഞാനികള്ക്കു ആഹാരവും വിവേകികള്ക്കു സമ്പത്തും സാമര്ത്ഥ്യമുള്ളവര്ക്കും പ്രീതിയും ലഭിക്കുന്നില്ല; അവര്ക്കൊക്കെയും കാലവും ഗതിയും അത്രേ ലഭിക്കുന്നതു.

11. I returned, and I sawe vnder the sunne that the race is not to the swift, nor the battell to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, nor also riches to men of vnderstanding, neither yet fauour to men of knowledge: but time and chance commeth to them all.

12. മനുഷ്യന് തന്റെ കാലം അറിയുന്നില്ലല്ലോ; വല്ലാത്ത വലയില് പിടിപെടുന്ന മത്സ്യങ്ങളെപ്പോലെയും കണിയില് അകപ്പെടുന്ന പക്ഷികളെപ്പോലെയും മനുഷ്യര്, പെട്ടെന്നു വന്നു കൂടുന്ന ദുഷ്കാലത്തു കണിയില് കുടുങ്ങിപ്പോകുന്നു.

12. For neither doth man knowe his time, but as the fishes which are taken in an euill net, and as the birdes that are caught in the snare: so are the children of men snared in the euill time when it falleth vpon them suddenly.

13. ഞാന് സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ ഇങ്ങനെയും ജ്ഞാനം കണ്ടു; അതു എനിക്കു വലുതായി തോന്നി;

13. I haue also seene this wisedome vnder the sunne, and it is great vnto me.

14. ചെറിയോരു പട്ടണം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു; അതില് മനുഷ്യര് ചുരുക്കമായിരുന്നു; വലിയോരു രാജാവു അതിന്റെ നേരെ വന്നു, അതിനെ നിരോധിച്ചു, അതിന്നെതിരെ വലിയ കൊത്തളങ്ങള് പണിതു.

14. A litle citie and fewe men in it, and a great King came against it, and compassed it about, and builded fortes against it.

15. എന്നാല് അവിടെ സാധുവായോരു ജ്ഞാനി പാര്ത്തിരുന്നു; അവന് തന്റെ ജ്ഞാനത്താല് പട്ടണത്തെ രക്ഷിച്ചു; എങ്കിലും ആ സാധുമനുഷ്യനെ ആരും ഔര്ത്തില്ല.

15. And there was founde therein a poore and wise man, and he deliuered the citie by his wisedome: but none remembred this poore man.

16. ജ്ഞാനം ബലത്തെക്കാള് നല്ലതു തന്നേ, എങ്കിലും സാധുവിന്റെ ജ്ഞാനം തുച്ഛീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു; അവന്റെ വാക്കു ആരും കൂട്ടാക്കുന്നതുമില്ല എന്നു ഞാന് പറഞ്ഞു.

16. Then said I, Better is wisdome then strength: yet the wisedome of the poore is despised, and his wordes are not heard.

17. മൂഢന്മാരെ ഭരിക്കുന്നവന്റെ അട്ടഹാസത്തെക്കാള് സാവധാനത്തില് പറയുന്ന ജ്ഞാനികളുടെ വചനങ്ങള് നല്ലതു.

17. The wordes of the wise are more heard in quietnes, then the crye of him that ruleth among fooles.

18. യുദ്ധായുധങ്ങളെക്കാളും ജ്ഞാനം നല്ലതു; എന്നാല് ഒരൊറ്റ പാപി വളരെ നന്മ നശിപ്പിച്ചുകളയുന്നു.

18. Better is wisedome then weapons of warre: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
