1. ഇതൊക്കെയും, നീതിമാന്മാരും ജ്ഞാനികളും അവരുടെ പ്രവൃത്തികളും ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കയ്യില് ഇരിക്കുന്നു എന്നുള്ളതൊക്കെയും തന്നേ, ശോധനചെയ്വാന് ഞാന് മനസ്സുവെച്ചു; സ്നേഹമാകട്ടെ ദ്വേഷമാകട്ടെ ഒന്നും മനുഷ്യന് അറിയുന്നില്ല; സര്വ്വവും അവരുടെ മുമ്പില് ഇരിക്കുന്നു താനും.

1. But all this I have laid unto my heart, so as to clear up the whole of this, that the righteous and the wise, and their works, [are] in the hand of God, neither love nor hatred doth man know, the whole [is] before them.

2. എല്ലാവര്ക്കും എല്ലാം ഒരുപോലെ സംഭവിക്കുന്നു; നീതിമാന്നും ദുഷ്ടന്നും നല്ലവന്നും നിര്മ്മലന്നും മലിനന്നും യാഗം കഴിക്കുന്നവനും യാഗം കഴിക്കാത്തവന്നും ഒരേ ഗതി വരുന്നു; പാപിയും നല്ലവനും ആണ പേടിക്കുന്നവനും ആണയിടുന്നവനും ഒരുപോലെ ആകുന്നു.

2. The whole [is] as to the whole; one event is to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good, and to the clean, and to the unclean, and to him who is sacrificing, and to him who is not sacrificing; as [is] the good, so [is] the sinner, he who is swearing as he who is fearing an oath.

3. എല്ലാവര്ക്കും ഒരേഗതി വരുന്നു എന്നുള്ളതു സൂര്യന്റെ കീഴില് നടക്കുന്ന എല്ലാറ്റിലും ഒരു തിന്മയത്രേ; മനുഷ്യരുടെ ഹൃദയത്തിലും ദോഷം നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു; ജീവപര്യന്തം അവരുടെ ഹൃദയത്തില് ഭ്രാന്തു ഉണ്ടു; അതിന്റെ ശേഷമോ അവര് മരിച്ചവരുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കു പോകുന്നു.

3. This [is] an evil among all that hath been done under the sun, that one event [is] to all, and also the heart of the sons of man is full of evil, and madness [is] in their heart during their life, and after it -- unto the dead.

4. ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തില് ഉള്ളവന്നൊക്കെയും പ്രത്യാശയുണ്ടു; ചത്ത സിംഹത്തെക്കാള് ജീവനുള്ള നായ് നല്ലതല്ലോ.

4. But [to] him who is joined unto all the living there is confidence, for to a living dog it [is] better than to the dead lion.

5. ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവര് തങ്ങള് മരിക്കും എന്നറിയുന്നു; മരിച്ചവരോ ഒന്നും അറിയുന്നില്ല; മേലാല് അവര്ക്കും ഒരു പ്രതിഫലവും ഇല്ല; അവരെ ഔര്മ്മ വിട്ടുപോകുന്നുവല്ലോ.

5. For the living know that they die, and the dead know not anything, and there is no more to them a reward, for their remembrance hath been forgotten.

6. അവരുടെ സ്നേഹവും ദ്വേഷവും അസൂയയും നശിച്ചുപോയി; സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ നടക്കുന്ന യാതൊന്നിലും അവര്ക്കും ഇനി ഒരിക്കലും ഔഹരിയില്ല.

6. Their love also, their hatred also, their envy also, hath already perished, and they have no more a portion to the age in all that hath been done under the sun.

7. നീ ചെന്നു സന്തോഷത്തോടുകൂടെ അപ്പം തിന്നുക; ആനന്ദഹൃദയത്തോടെ വീഞ്ഞു കുടിക്ക ദൈവം നിന്റെ പ്രവൃത്തികളില് പ്രസാദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നുവല്ലോ.

7. Go, eat with joy thy bread, and drink with a glad heart thy wine, for already hath God been pleased with thy works.

8. നിന്റെ വസ്ത്രം എല്ലായ്പോഴും വെള്ളയായിരിക്കട്ടെ; നിന്റെ തലയില് എണ്ണ കുറയാതിരിക്കട്ടെ.

8. At all times let thy garments be white, and let not perfume be lacking on thy head.

9. സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ അവന് നിനക്കു നല്കിയിരിക്കുന്ന മായയായുള്ള ആയുഷ്കാലത്തൊക്കെയും നീ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്ന ഭാര്യയോടുകൂടെ മായയായുള്ള നിന്റെ ആയുഷ്കാലമെല്ലാം സുഖിച്ചുകൊള്ക; അതല്ലോ ഈ ആയുസ്സിലും സൂര്യന്റെ കീഴില് നീ ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രയത്നത്തിലും നിനക്കുള്ള ഔഹരി.

9. See life with the wife whom thou hast loved, all the days of the life of thy vanity, that He hath given to thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity, for it [is] thy portion in life, even of thy labour that thou art labouring at under the sun.

10. ചെയ്വാന് നിനക്കു സംഗതിവരുന്നതൊക്കെയും ശക്തിയോടെ ചെയ്ക; നീ ചെല്ലുന്ന പാതാളത്തില് പ്രവൃത്തിയോ സൂത്രമോ, അറിവോ, ജ്ഞാനമോ ഒന്നും ഇല്ല.

10. All that thy hand findeth to do, with thy power do, for there is no work, and device, and knowledge, and wisdom in Sheol whither thou art going.

11. പിന്നെയും ഞാന് സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ കണ്ടതുവേഗതയുള്ളവര് ഔട്ടത്തിലും വീരന്മാര് യുദ്ധത്തിലും നേടുന്നില്ല; ജ്ഞാനികള്ക്കു ആഹാരവും വിവേകികള്ക്കു സമ്പത്തും സാമര്ത്ഥ്യമുള്ളവര്ക്കും പ്രീതിയും ലഭിക്കുന്നില്ല; അവര്ക്കൊക്കെയും കാലവും ഗതിയും അത്രേ ലഭിക്കുന്നതു.

11. I have turned so as to see under the sun, that not to the swift [is] the race, nor to the mighty the battle, nor even to the wise bread, nor even to the intelligent wealth, nor even to the skilful grace, for time and chance happen with them all.

12. മനുഷ്യന് തന്റെ കാലം അറിയുന്നില്ലല്ലോ; വല്ലാത്ത വലയില് പിടിപെടുന്ന മത്സ്യങ്ങളെപ്പോലെയും കണിയില് അകപ്പെടുന്ന പക്ഷികളെപ്പോലെയും മനുഷ്യര്, പെട്ടെന്നു വന്നു കൂടുന്ന ദുഷ്കാലത്തു കണിയില് കുടുങ്ങിപ്പോകുന്നു.

12. For even man knoweth not his time; as fish that are taken hold of by an evil net, and as birds that are taken hold of by a snare, like these [are] the sons of man snared at an evil time, when it falleth upon them suddenly.

13. ഞാന് സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ ഇങ്ങനെയും ജ്ഞാനം കണ്ടു; അതു എനിക്കു വലുതായി തോന്നി;

13. This also I have seen: wisdom under the sun, and it is great to me.

14. ചെറിയോരു പട്ടണം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു; അതില് മനുഷ്യര് ചുരുക്കമായിരുന്നു; വലിയോരു രാജാവു അതിന്റെ നേരെ വന്നു, അതിനെ നിരോധിച്ചു, അതിന്നെതിരെ വലിയ കൊത്തളങ്ങള് പണിതു.

14. A little city, and few men in it, and a great king hath come unto it, and hath surrounded it, and hath built against it great bulwarks;

15. എന്നാല് അവിടെ സാധുവായോരു ജ്ഞാനി പാര്ത്തിരുന്നു; അവന് തന്റെ ജ്ഞാനത്താല് പട്ടണത്തെ രക്ഷിച്ചു; എങ്കിലും ആ സാധുമനുഷ്യനെ ആരും ഔര്ത്തില്ല.

15. and there hath been found in it a poor wise man, and he hath delivered the city by his wisdom, and men have not remembered that poor man!

16. ജ്ഞാനം ബലത്തെക്കാള് നല്ലതു തന്നേ, എങ്കിലും സാധുവിന്റെ ജ്ഞാനം തുച്ഛീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു; അവന്റെ വാക്കു ആരും കൂട്ടാക്കുന്നതുമില്ല എന്നു ഞാന് പറഞ്ഞു.

16. And I said, 'Better [is] wisdom than might, and the wisdom of the poor is despised, and his words are not heard.' --

17. മൂഢന്മാരെ ഭരിക്കുന്നവന്റെ അട്ടഹാസത്തെക്കാള് സാവധാനത്തില് പറയുന്ന ജ്ഞാനികളുടെ വചനങ്ങള് നല്ലതു.

17. The words of the wise in quiet are heard, More than the cry of a ruler over fools.

18. യുദ്ധായുധങ്ങളെക്കാളും ജ്ഞാനം നല്ലതു; എന്നാല് ഒരൊറ്റ പാപി വളരെ നന്മ നശിപ്പിച്ചുകളയുന്നു.

18. Better [is] wisdom than weapons of conflict, And one sinner destroyeth much good!
