1. പിന്നെ യാക്കോബ് പ്രയാണം ചെയ്തു കിഴക്കരുടെ ദേശത്തു എത്തി.

1. After Jacob resumed his journey, he came to the land of the Easterners.

2. അവന് വെളിന് പ്രദേശത്തു ഒരു കിണറ് കണ്ടു. അതിന്നരികെ മൂന്നു ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടം കിടക്കുന്നു. ആ കിണറ്റില്നിന്നു ആയിരുന്നു ആട്ടിന് കൂട്ടങ്ങള്ക്കു വെള്ളം കൊടുക്കുന്നതു; എന്നാല് കിണറ്റിന്റെ വായ്ക്കലുള്ള കല്ലു വലുതായിരുന്നു.

2. Looking about, he saw a well in the open country, with three droves of sheep huddled near it, for droves were watered from that well. A large stone covered the mouth of the well.

3. ആ സ്ഥലത്തു കൂട്ടങ്ങള് ഒക്കെ കൂടുകയും അവര് കിണറ്റിന്റെ വായ്ക്കല്നിന്നു കല്ലു ഉരുട്ടി ആടുകള്ക്കു വെള്ളം കൊടുക്കയും കല്ലു കിണറ്റിന്റെ വായക്ക്ല് അതിന്റെ സ്ഥലത്തു തന്നേ തിരികെ വെക്കയും ചെയ്യും.

3. Only when all the shepherds were assembled there could they roll the stone away from the mouth of the well and water the flocks. Then they would put the stone back again over the mouth of the well.

4. യാക്കോബ് അവരോടുസഹോദരന്മാരേ, നിങ്ങള് എവിടുത്തുകാര് എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുഞങ്ങള് ഹാരാന്യര് എന്നു അവര് പറഞ്ഞു.

4. Jacob said to them, 'Friends, where are you from?' 'We are from Haran,' they replied.

5. അവന് അവരോടുനിങ്ങള് നാഹോരിന്റെ മകനായ ലാബാനെ അറിയുമോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുഅറിയും എന്നു അവര് പറഞ്ഞു.

5. Then he asked them, 'Do you know Laban, son of Nahor?' 'We do,' they answered.

6. അവന് അവരോടുഅവന് സുഖമായിരിക്കുന്നുവോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. സുഖം തന്നേ; അവന്റെ മകള് റാഹേല് അതാ ആടുകളോടു കൂടെ വരുന്നു എന്നു അവര് അവനോടു പറഞ്ഞു.

6. He inquired further, 'Is he well?' 'He is,' they answered; 'and here comes his daughter Rachel with his flock.'

7. പകല് ഇനിയും വളരെയുണ്ടല്ലോ; കൂട്ടം ഒന്നിച്ചു കൂടുന്ന നേരമായിട്ടില്ല; ആടുകള്ക്കു വെള്ളം കൊടുത്തു കൊണ്ടുപോയി തീറ്റുവിന് എന്നു അവന് പറഞ്ഞതിന്നു

7. Then he said: 'There is still much daylight left; it is hardly the time to bring the animals home. Why don't you water the flocks now, and then continue pasturing them?'

8. അവര്കൂട്ടങ്ങള് ഒക്കെയും കൂടുവോളം ഞങ്ങള്ക്കു വഹിയാ; അവര് കിണറ്റിന്റെ വായ്ക്കല്നിന്നു കല്ലു ഉരുട്ടും; പിന്നെ ഞങ്ങള് ആടുകള്ക്കു വെള്ളം കൊടുക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. 'We cannot,' they replied, 'until all the shepherds are here to roll the stone away from the mouth of the well; only then can we water the flocks.'

9. While he was still talking with them, Rachel arrived with her father's sheep; she was the one who tended them.

10. As soon as Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of his uncle Laban, with the sheep of his uncle Laban, he went up, rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well, and watered his uncle's sheep.

11. യാക്കോബ് റാഹേലിനെ ചുംബിച്ചു പൊട്ടിക്കരഞ്ഞു.

11. Then Jacob kissed Rachel and burst into tears.

12. താന് അവളുടെ അപ്പന്റെ സഹോദരന് എന്നും റിബെക്കയുടെ മകനെന്നും യാക്കോബ് റാഹേലിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു. അവള് ഔടിച്ചെന്നു തന്റെ അപ്പനെ അറിയിച്ചു.

12. He told her that he was her father's relative, Rebekah's son, and she ran to tell her father.

13. ലാബാന് തന്റെ സഹോദരിയുടെ മകനായ യാക്കോബിന്റെ വസ്തുത കേട്ടപ്പോള് അവനെ എതിരേല്പാന് ഔടിച്ചെന്നു അവനെ ആലിംഗനം ചെയ്തു ചുംബിച്ചു വീട്ടില് കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോയി; അവന് ലാബാനോടു വിവരം ഒക്കെയും പറഞ്ഞു.

13. When Laban heard the news about his sister's son Jacob, he hurried out to meet him. After embracing and kissing him, he brought him to his house. Jacob then recounted to Laban all that had happened,

14. ലാബാന് അവനോടുനീ എന്റെ അസ്ഥിയും മാംസവും തന്നേ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അവന് ഒരു മാസകാലം അവന്റെ അടുക്കല് പാര്ത്തു.

14. and Laban said to him, 'You are indeed my flesh and blood.' After Jacob had stayed with him a full month,

15. പിന്നെ ലാബാന് യാക്കോബിനോടുനീ എന്റെ സഹോദരനാകകൊണ്ടു വെറുതെ എന്നെ സേവിക്കേണമോ? നിനക്കു എന്തു പ്രതിഫലം വേണം? എന്നോടു പറക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

15. Laban said to him: 'Should you serve me for nothing just because you are a relative of mine? Tell me what your wages should be.'

16. എന്നാല് ലാബാന്നു രണ്ടു പുത്രിമാര് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുമൂത്തവള്ക്കു ലേയാ എന്നും ഇളയവള്ക്കു റാഹേല് എന്നും പേര്.

16. Now Laban had two daughters; the older was called Leah, the younger Rachel.

17. ലേയയുടെ കണ്ണു ശോഭ കുറഞ്ഞതായിരുന്നു; റാഹേലോ സുന്ദരിയും മനോഹരരൂപിണിയും ആയിരുന്നു.

17. Leah had lovely eyes, but Rachel was well formed and beautiful.

18. യാക്കോബ് റാഹേലിനെ സ്നേഹിച്ചു; നിന്റെ ഇളയമകള് റാഹേലിന്നു വേണ്ടി ഞാന് ഏഴു സംവത്സരം നിന്നെ സേവിക്കാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

18. Since Jacob had fallen in love with Rachel, he answered Laban, 'I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.'

19. അതിന്നു ലാബാന് ഞാന് അവളെ അന്യപുരുഷന്നുകൊടുക്കുന്നതിലും നിനക്കു തരുന്നതു നല്ലതു; എന്നോടുകൂടെ പാര്ക്ക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

19. Laban replied, 'I prefer to give her to you rather than to an outsider. Stay with me.'

20. അങ്ങനെ യാക്കോബ് റാഹേലിന്നു വേണ്ടി ഏഴു സംവത്സരം സേവ ചെയ്തു; അവന് അവളെ സ്നേഹിക്കകൊണ്ടു അതു അവന്നു അല്പകാലം പോലെ തോന്നി.

20. So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, yet they seemed to him but a few days because of his love for her.

21. അനന്തരം യാക്കോബ് ലാബാനോടുഎന്റെ സമയം തികഞ്ഞിരിക്കയാല് ഞാന് എന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെല്ലുവാന് അവളെ തരേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

21. Then Jacob said to Laban, 'Give me my wife, that I may consummate my marriage with her, for my term is now completed.'

22. അപ്പോള് ലാബാന് ആ സ്ഥലത്തെ ജനങ്ങളെ എല്ലാം ഒന്നിച്ചുകൂട്ടി ഒരു വിരുന്നു കഴിച്ചു.

22. So Laban invited all the local inhabitants and gave a feast.

23. എന്നാല് രാത്രിയില് അവന് തന്റെ മകള് ലേയയെ കൂട്ടി അവന്റെ അടുക്കല് കൊണ്ടു പോയി ആക്കി; അവന് അവളുടെ അടുക്കല് ചെന്നു.

23. At nightfall he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob consummated the marriage with her.

24. ലാബാന് തന്റെ മകള് ലേയെക്കു തന്റെ ദാസി സില്പയെ ദാസിയായി കൊടുത്തു.

24. (Laban assigned his slave girl Zilpah to his daughter Leah as her maidservant.)

25. നേരം വെളുത്തപ്പോള് അതു ലേയാ എന്നു കണ്ടു അവന് ലാബാനോടുനീ എന്നോടു ചെയ്തതു എന്തു? റാഹേലിന്നു വേണ്ടി അല്ലയോ ഞാന് നിന്നെ സേവിച്ചതു? നീ എന്തിന്നു എന്നെ ചതിച്ചു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

25. In the morning Jacob was amazed: it was Leah! So he cried out to Laban: 'How could you do this to me! Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why did you dupe me?'

26. അതിന്നു ലാബാന് മൂത്തവള്ക്കു മുമ്പെ ഇളയവളെ കൊടുക്ക ഞങ്ങളുടെ ദിക്കില് നടപ്പില്ല.

26. 'It is not the custom in our country,' Laban replied, 'to marry off a younger daughter before an older one.

27. ഇവളുടെ ആഴ്ചവട്ടം നിവര്ത്തിക്ക; എന്നാല് നീ ഇനിയും ഏഴു സംവത്സരം എന്റെ അടുക്കല് ചെയ്യുന്ന സേവേക്കു വേണ്ടി ഞങ്ങള് അവളെയും നിനക്കു തരാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

27. Finish the bridal week for this one, and then I will give you the other too, in return for another seven years of service with me.'

28. യാക്കോബ് അങ്ങനെ തന്നേ ചെയ്തു, അവളുടെ ആഴ്ചവട്ടം നിവര്ത്തിച്ചു; അവന് തന്റെ മകള് റാഹേലിനെയും അവന്നു ഭാര്യയായി കൊടുത്തു.

28. Jacob agreed. He finished the bridal week for Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel in marriage.

29. തന്റെ മകള് റാഹേലിന്നു ലാബാന് തന്റെ ദാസി ബില്ഹയെ ദാസിയായി കൊടുത്തു.

29. (Laban assigned his slave girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her maidservant.)

30. Jacob then consummated his marriage with Rachel also, and he loved her more than Leah. Thus he remained in Laban's service another seven years.

31. ലേയാ അനിഷ്ടയെന്നു യഹോവ കണ്ടപ്പോള് അവളുടെ ഗര്ഭത്തെ തുറന്നു; റാഹേലോ മച്ചിയായിരുന്നു.

31. When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, he made her fruitful, while Rachel remained barren.

32. ലേയാ ഗര്ഭംധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചുയഹോവ എന്റെ സങ്കടം കണ്ടു; ഇപ്പോള് എന്റെ ഭര്ത്താവു എന്നെ സ്നേഹിക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവള് അവന്നു രൂബേന് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

32. Leah conceived and bore a son, and she named him Reuben; for she said, 'It means, 'The LORD saw my misery; now my husband will love me.''

33. അവള് പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭംധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചുഞാന് അനിഷ ്ടഎന്നു യഹോവ കേട്ടതുകൊണ്ടു ഇവനെയും എനിക്കു തന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവന്നു ശിമെയോന് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

33. She conceived again and bore a son, and said, 'It means, 'The LORD heard that I was unloved,' and therefore he has given me this one also'; so she named him Simeon.

34. അവള് പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭംധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചുഇപ്പോള് ഈ സമയം എന്റെ ഭര്ത്താവു എന്നോടു പറ്റിച്ചേരും; ഞാന് അവന്നു മൂന്നു പുത്രന്മാരെ പ്രസവിച്ചുവല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അതുകൊണ്ടു അവള് അവന്നു ലേവി എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

34. Again she conceived and bore a son, and she said, 'Now at last my husband will become attached to me, since I have now borne him three sons'; that is why she named him Levi.

35. അവള് പിന്നെയും ഗര്ഭം ധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; ഇപ്പോള് ഞാന് യഹോവയെ സ്തുതിക്കും എന്നു അവള് പറഞ്ഞു; അതുകൊണ്ടു അവള് അവന്നു യെഹൂദാ എന്നു പേരിട്ടു. പിന്നെ അവള്ക്കു പ്രസവം നിന്നു.

35. Once more she conceived and bore a son, and she said, 'This time I will give grateful praise to the LORD'; therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing children.
