1. ഇവയും ശലോമോന്റെ സദൃശവാക്യങ്ങള്; യെഹൂദാരാജാവായ ഹിസ്കീയാവിന്റെ ആളുകള് അവയെ ശേഖരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

1. These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

2. കാര്യം മറെച്ചുവെക്കുന്നതു ദൈവത്തിന്റെ മഹത്വം; കാര്യം ആരായുന്നതോ രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ മഹത്വം.

2. It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

3. ആകാശത്തിന്റെ ഉയരവും ഭൂമിയുടെ ആഴവും രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ ഹൃദയവും അഗോചരം.

3. The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.

4. വെള്ളിയില്നിന്നു കീടം നീക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞാല് തട്ടാന്നു ഒരു ഉരുപ്പടി കിട്ടും.

4. Take away the dross from the silver, and there cometh forth a vessel for the finer:

5. രാജസന്നിധിയില്നിന്നു ദുഷ്ടനെ നീക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞാല് അവന്റെ സിംഹാസനം നീതിയാല് സ്ഥിരപ്പെടും.

5. Take away the wicked {cf15i from} before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.

6. രാജസന്നിധിയില് വമ്പു കാണിക്കരുതു; മഹാന്മാരുടെ സ്ഥാനത്തു നില്ക്കയും അരുതു.

6. Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:

7. നീ കണ്ടിരുന്ന പ്രഭുവിന്റെ മുമ്പില് നിനക്കു താഴ്ച ഭവിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാള് ഇവിടെ കയറിവരിക എന്നു നിന്നോടു പറയുന്നതു നല്ലതു.

7. For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom thine eyes have seen.

8. ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു വ്യവഹാരത്തിന്നു പുറപ്പെടരുതു; അല്ലെങ്കില് ഒടുക്കം കൂട്ടുകാരന് നിന്നെ ലജ്ജിപ്പിച്ചാല് നീ എന്തു ചെയ്യും?

8. Go not forth hastily to strive, lest {cf15i thou know not} what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.

9. നിന്റെ വഴക്കു കൂട്ടുകാരനുമായി പറഞ്ഞു തീര്ക്ക; എന്നാല് മറ്റൊരുത്തന്റെ രഹസ്യം വെളിപ്പെടുത്തരുതു.

9. Debate thy cause with thy neighbour {cf15i himself}, and disclose not the secret of another:

10. കേള്ക്കുന്നവന് നിന്നെ നിന്ദിപ്പാനും നിനക്കു തീരാത്ത അപമാനം വരുവാനും ഇടവരരുതു.

10. Lest he that heareth it revile thee, and thine infamy turn not away.

11. തക്കസമയത്തു പറഞ്ഞ വാക്കു വെള്ളിത്താലത്തില് പൊന് നാരങ്ങാപോലെ.

11. A word fitly spoken is {cf15i like} apples of gold in baskets of silver.

12. കേട്ടനുസരിക്കുന്ന കാതിന്നു ജ്ഞാനിയായോരു ശാസകന് പൊന് കടുക്കനും തങ്കം കൊണ്ടുള്ള ആഭരണവും ആകുന്നു.

12. {cf15i As} an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, {cf15i so is} a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

13. വിശ്വസ്തനായ ദൂതന് തന്നെ അയക്കുന്നവര്ക്കും കൊയ്ത്തു കാലത്തു ഹിമത്തിന്റെ തണുപ്പുപോലെ; അവന് യജമാനന്മാരുടെ ഉള്ളം തണുപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

13. As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, {cf15i so is} a faithful messenger to them that send him; for he refresheth the soul of his masters.

14. ദാനങ്ങളെച്ചൊല്ലി വെറുതെ പ്രശംസിക്കുന്നവന് മഴയില്ലാത്ത മേഘവും കാറ്റും പോലെയാകുന്നു.

14. {cf15i As} clouds and wind without rain, {cf15i so is} he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely.

15. ദീര്ഘക്ഷാന്തികൊണ്ടു ന്യായാധിപന്നു സമ്മതം വരുന്നു; മൃദുവായുള്ള നാവു അസ്ഥിയെ നുറുക്കുന്നു.

15. By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

16. നിനക്കു തേന് കിട്ടിയാല് വേണ്ടുന്നതേ ഭുജിക്കാവു; അധികം നിറഞ്ഞിട്ടു ഛര്ദ്ദിപ്പാന് ഇടവരരുതു.

16. Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee; lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

17. കൂട്ടുകാരന് നിന്നെക്കൊണ്ടു മടുത്തു നിന്നെ വെറുക്കാതെയിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവന്റെ വീട്ടില് കൂടക്കൂടെ ചെല്ലരുതു.

17. Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbours house; lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.

18. കൂട്ടുകാരന്നു വിരോധമായി കള്ളസ്സാക്ഷ്യം പറയുന്ന മനുഷ്യന് മുട്ടികയും വാളും കൂര്ത്ത അമ്പും ആകുന്നു.

18. A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

19. കഷ്ടകാലത്തു വിശ്വാസപാതകനെ ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നതു മുറിഞ്ഞ പല്ലും ഉളുക്കിയ കാലുംപോലെ ആകുന്നു.

19. Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is {cf15i like} a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.

20. വിഷാദമുള്ള ഹൃദയത്തിന്നു പാട്ടു പാടുന്നവന് ശീതകാലത്തു വസ്ത്രം കളയുന്നതുപോലെയും യവക്ഷാരത്തിന്മേല് ചൊറുക്ക പകരുന്നതു പോലെയും ആകുന്നു.

20. {cf15i As} one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, {cf15i and as} vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.

21. ശത്രുവിന്നു വിശക്കുന്നു എങ്കില് അവന്നു തിന്മാന് കൊടുക്ക; ദാഹിക്കുന്നു എങ്കില് കുടിപ്പാന് കൊടുക്ക.

21. If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

22. അങ്ങനെ നീ അവന്റെ തലമേല് തീക്കനല് കുന്നിക്കും; യഹോവ നിനക്കു പ്രതിഫലം നലകുകയും ചെയ്യും.

22. For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

23. വടതിക്കാറ്റു മഴ കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നു; ഏഷണിവാക്കു കോപഭാവത്തെ ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു;

23. The north wind bringeth forth rain: so doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

24. ശണ്ഠകൂടുന്ന സ്ത്രീയോടുകൂടെ പൊതുവീട്ടില് പാര്ക്കുംന്നതിനെക്കാള് മേല്പുരയുടെ ഒരു കോണില് പാര്ക്കുംന്നതു നല്ലതു.

24. It is better to dwell in the comer of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

25. ദാഹമുള്ളവന്നു തണ്ണീര് കിട്ടുന്നതും ദൂരദേശത്തുനിന്നു നല്ല വര്ത്തമാനം വരുന്നതും ഒരുപോലെ.

25. {cf15i As} cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

26. ദുഷ്ടന്റെ മുമ്പില് കുലുങ്ങിപ്പോയ നീതിമാന് കലങ്ങിയ കിണറ്റിന്നും മലിനമായ ഉറവിന്നും സമം.

26. {cf15i As} a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, {cf15i so is} a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.

27. തേന് ഏറെ കുടിക്കുന്നതു നന്നല്ല; പ്രയാസമുള്ളതു ആരായുന്നതോ മഹത്വം.

27. It is not good to eat much honey: so {cf15i for men} to search out their own glory is {cf15i not} glory.

28. ആത്മസംയമം ഇല്ലാത്ത പുരുഷന് മതില് ഇല്ലാതെ ഇടിഞ്ഞുകിടക്കുന്ന പട്ടണം പോലെയാകുന്നു.

28. He whose spirit is without restraint is {cf15i like} a city that is broken down and hath no wall.
