1. ഇവയും ശലോമോന്റെ സദൃശവാക്യങ്ങള്; യെഹൂദാരാജാവായ ഹിസ്കീയാവിന്റെ ആളുകള് അവയെ ശേഖരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

1. Also these are Proverbs of Solomon, that men of Hezekiah king of Judah transcribed: --

2. കാര്യം മറെച്ചുവെക്കുന്നതു ദൈവത്തിന്റെ മഹത്വം; കാര്യം ആരായുന്നതോ രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ മഹത്വം.

2. The honour of God [is] to hide a thing, And the honour of kings to search out a matter.

3. ആകാശത്തിന്റെ ഉയരവും ഭൂമിയുടെ ആഴവും രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ ഹൃദയവും അഗോചരം.

3. The heavens for height, and the earth for depth, And the heart of kings -- [are] unsearchable.

4. വെള്ളിയില്നിന്നു കീടം നീക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞാല് തട്ടാന്നു ഒരു ഉരുപ്പടി കിട്ടും.

4. Take away dross from silver, And a vessel for the refiner goeth forth,

5. രാജസന്നിധിയില്നിന്നു ദുഷ്ടനെ നീക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞാല് അവന്റെ സിംഹാസനം നീതിയാല് സ്ഥിരപ്പെടും.

5. Take away the wicked before a king, And established in righteousness is his throne.

6. രാജസന്നിധിയില് വമ്പു കാണിക്കരുതു; മഹാന്മാരുടെ സ്ഥാനത്തു നില്ക്കയും അരുതു.

6. Honour not thyself before a king, And in the place of the great stand not.

7. നീ കണ്ടിരുന്ന പ്രഭുവിന്റെ മുമ്പില് നിനക്കു താഴ്ച ഭവിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാള് ഇവിടെ കയറിവരിക എന്നു നിന്നോടു പറയുന്നതു നല്ലതു.

7. For better [that] he hath said to thee, 'Come thou up hither,' Than [that] he humble thee before a noble, Whom thine eyes have seen.

8. ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു വ്യവഹാരത്തിന്നു പുറപ്പെടരുതു; അല്ലെങ്കില് ഒടുക്കം കൂട്ടുകാരന് നിന്നെ ലജ്ജിപ്പിച്ചാല് നീ എന്തു ചെയ്യും?

8. Go not forth to strive, haste, turn, What dost thou in its latter end, When thy neighbour causeth thee to blush?

9. നിന്റെ വഴക്കു കൂട്ടുകാരനുമായി പറഞ്ഞു തീര്ക്ക; എന്നാല് മറ്റൊരുത്തന്റെ രഹസ്യം വെളിപ്പെടുത്തരുതു.

9. Thy cause plead with thy neighbour, And the secret counsel of another reveal not,

10. കേള്ക്കുന്നവന് നിന്നെ നിന്ദിപ്പാനും നിനക്കു തീരാത്ത അപമാനം വരുവാനും ഇടവരരുതു.

10. Lest the hearer put thee to shame, And thine evil report turn not back.

11. തക്കസമയത്തു പറഞ്ഞ വാക്കു വെള്ളിത്താലത്തില് പൊന് നാരങ്ങാപോലെ.

11. Apples of gold in imagery of silver, [Is] the word spoken at its fit times.

12. കേട്ടനുസരിക്കുന്ന കാതിന്നു ജ്ഞാനിയായോരു ശാസകന് പൊന് കടുക്കനും തങ്കം കൊണ്ടുള്ള ആഭരണവും ആകുന്നു.

12. A ring of gold, and an ornament of pure gold, [Is] the wise reprover to an attentive ear.

13. വിശ്വസ്തനായ ദൂതന് തന്നെ അയക്കുന്നവര്ക്കും കൊയ്ത്തു കാലത്തു ഹിമത്തിന്റെ തണുപ്പുപോലെ; അവന് യജമാനന്മാരുടെ ഉള്ളം തണുപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

13. As a vessel of snow in a day of harvest, [So is] a faithful ambassador to those sending him, And the soul of his masters he refresheth.

14. ദാനങ്ങളെച്ചൊല്ലി വെറുതെ പ്രശംസിക്കുന്നവന് മഴയില്ലാത്ത മേഘവും കാറ്റും പോലെയാകുന്നു.

14. Clouds and wind, and rain there is none, [Is] a man boasting himself in a false gift.

15. ദീര്ഘക്ഷാന്തികൊണ്ടു ന്യായാധിപന്നു സമ്മതം വരുന്നു; മൃദുവായുള്ള നാവു അസ്ഥിയെ നുറുക്കുന്നു.

15. By long-suffering is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh a bone.

16. നിനക്കു തേന് കിട്ടിയാല് വേണ്ടുന്നതേ ഭുജിക്കാവു; അധികം നിറഞ്ഞിട്ടു ഛര്ദ്ദിപ്പാന് ഇടവരരുതു.

16. Honey thou hast found -- eat thy sufficiency, Lest thou be satiated [with] it, and hast vomited it.

17. കൂട്ടുകാരന് നിന്നെക്കൊണ്ടു മടുത്തു നിന്നെ വെറുക്കാതെയിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവന്റെ വീട്ടില് കൂടക്കൂടെ ചെല്ലരുതു.

17. Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house, Lest he be satiated [with] thee, and have hated thee.

18. കൂട്ടുകാരന്നു വിരോധമായി കള്ളസ്സാക്ഷ്യം പറയുന്ന മനുഷ്യന് മുട്ടികയും വാളും കൂര്ത്ത അമ്പും ആകുന്നു.

18. A maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow, [Is] the man testifying against his neighbour a false testimony.

19. കഷ്ടകാലത്തു വിശ്വാസപാതകനെ ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നതു മുറിഞ്ഞ പല്ലും ഉളുക്കിയ കാലുംപോലെ ആകുന്നു.

19. A bad tooth, and a tottering foot, [Is] the confidence of the treacherous in a day of adversity.

20. വിഷാദമുള്ള ഹൃദയത്തിന്നു പാട്ടു പാടുന്നവന് ശീതകാലത്തു വസ്ത്രം കളയുന്നതുപോലെയും യവക്ഷാരത്തിന്മേല് ചൊറുക്ക പകരുന്നതു പോലെയും ആകുന്നു.

20. Whoso is taking away a garment in a cold day, [Is as] vinegar on nitre, And a singer of songs on a sad heart.

21. ശത്രുവിന്നു വിശക്കുന്നു എങ്കില് അവന്നു തിന്മാന് കൊടുക്ക; ദാഹിക്കുന്നു എങ്കില് കുടിപ്പാന് കൊടുക്ക.

21. If he who is hating thee doth hunger, cause him to eat bread, And if he thirst, cause him to drink water.

22. അങ്ങനെ നീ അവന്റെ തലമേല് തീക്കനല് കുന്നിക്കും; യഹോവ നിനക്കു പ്രതിഫലം നലകുകയും ചെയ്യും.

22. For coals thou art putting on his head, And Jehovah giveth recompense to thee.

23. വടതിക്കാറ്റു മഴ കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നു; ഏഷണിവാക്കു കോപഭാവത്തെ ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു;

23. A north wind bringeth forth rain, And a secret tongue -- indignant faces.

24. ശണ്ഠകൂടുന്ന സ്ത്രീയോടുകൂടെ പൊതുവീട്ടില് പാര്ക്കുംന്നതിനെക്കാള് മേല്പുരയുടെ ഒരു കോണില് പാര്ക്കുംന്നതു നല്ലതു.

24. Better to sit on a corner of a roof, Than [with] a woman of contentions, and a house of company.

25. ദാഹമുള്ളവന്നു തണ്ണീര് കിട്ടുന്നതും ദൂരദേശത്തുനിന്നു നല്ല വര്ത്തമാനം വരുന്നതും ഒരുപോലെ.

25. [As] cold waters for a weary soul, So [is] a good report from a far country.

26. ദുഷ്ടന്റെ മുമ്പില് കുലുങ്ങിപ്പോയ നീതിമാന് കലങ്ങിയ കിണറ്റിന്നും മലിനമായ ഉറവിന്നും സമം.

26. A spring troubled, and a fountain corrupt, [Is] the righteous falling before the wicked.

27. തേന് ഏറെ കുടിക്കുന്നതു നന്നല്ല; പ്രയാസമുള്ളതു ആരായുന്നതോ മഹത്വം.

27. The eating of much honey is not good, Nor a searching out of one's own honour -- honour.

28. ആത്മസംയമം ഇല്ലാത്ത പുരുഷന് മതില് ഇല്ലാതെ ഇടിഞ്ഞുകിടക്കുന്ന പട്ടണം പോലെയാകുന്നു.

28. A city broken down without walls, [Is] a man without restraint over his spirit!
